Happy Birthday, Betty White!

Jan 17, 2008, 09:43 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Celebrity Birthdays, Television

The amazing Betty White turns 86 today, which gives us an excuse to talk about The Golden Girls.

Here's what we want you to do:

1. Post the episode you think of first. (Note: It may not be your favorite one.) I recalled the season 2 gem "Ladies of the Evening," when the girls move into a hotel while their house is being fumigated, get arrested for prostitution, and meet Burt Reynolds. Good times.

2. Tell us why these women needed to buy condoms...

Chrissy Tue, Feb 5, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Son in Law Dearest... not my favourite but I always go crazy when Rose tells Blanche about her and Charlie's sex life, the look on Blanche's face is prizeless.

Ana Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Two words. Dance. Marathon.

Matt Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Rose is sitting at the kitchen table when Dorothy enters with a pizza box.

Rose: Ooo, Dorothy, what's for dinner?

(Dorothy looks at the pizza box, back at Rose.)

Dorothy: A bucket of CHICKEN, Rose.

CeeCee Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

When Dorothy says ( about her date), "you make it sound so dirty!) then turns back at the door and says, "thank you". Or basically anything Dorothy says.

peggym Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

The first that comes to mind is when Blanche's husband comes back from the dead, and she's angry that he left her then thrilled that he's back-- then you discover it's a recurring dream, and Dorothy is there consoling her. The second is Rose telling about her husband's death. It showed dramatic depth, then later in the same episode she's brillian with one of her St olaf stories.

Amanda Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 04:39 AM EST

The one that comes to my mind is the one where Blanche stays up all night and comments on the egg yolks as little balls of sunshine and then starts spouting random quotes from other writers as her own novel. It always cracks me up. My husband always brings up the one about Blanche going through menopause, but I don't know if that one really exists, or if it does I can't remember seeing it.

Nix Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

I'm also down with the one where Blanche sits up all night writing a novel. It's not so much the lines as the delivery. Rose has been separating egg whites and, not wanting to waste the yolks, has put them in a Zip-Lock bag to give to the homeless. (Pause to ponder.) Blanche walks in, babbling, and then she slumps on the kitchen island and sees the yolks. With a faint smile on her face she murmurs fondy, "Oh my God, I'm hallucinating ... I see a bunch of little balls of sunshine in this bag ... Rose, Rose, am I hallucinating?" It goes on from there, but pretty much from that moment on I decided to be a writer.

Nicole Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

The episode where Dorothy's lesbian friend falls for Rose and Dorothy has to explain lesbian to Blanche, who thinks the lady is like Danny Thomas, lebanese.

Val Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

Remember the one where Sophia and Dorothy are in the Shady pines mother daughter besuty pageant and the dress like sunny and cher for the talent portion, and blanche comes in and says which ones cheech and which ones chong?

aron Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I love the episode where Rose is writing sophia's will and dorothy asks her mom why Rose and Rose interrupts with " I watch LA Law!" pronouncing it LA instead of L.A...

Love love love that show!

Happy birthday Betty!

Emily Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

I cant remember the plot, but one of my favorite moments is when all the ladies are sleeping in one bed. Rose starts saying her prayers, and Dorothy, in her deep voice and says "Rose, this is God. . ." to get her to shut up. I crack up every time.

suzanne Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

BEST TV SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1)Anyway, the first episode that comes to mind is when Dorothy married Leslie Nielson because it was the end of the series.
2)They are buying condoms because they are going on a cruise witht he boyfriends, this was from an all clips show.

Benny Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

One of my favorites: When their house gets robbed. Rose says that the thiefs were probably looking for drugs and then Dorothy says "what drugs, we got Malox and Strogen". LOL Long live Betty White and the Golden Girls. One of the funniest shows ever.

angela Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

The Moonlight Madness ep when Dorothy uses cupcakes as a veiled reference to to her naughty bits..."My cupcakes are moist and delicious. Men love my cupcakes!"

Also, "Condoms, Rose! Condoms, Condoms, Condoms." Store clerk: "Gee lady, did you just get out of prison?"

Ceballos Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Sorry if it's been mentioned, but I immediately think of the series finale where the girls say goodbye to Dorothy, who leaves through the front door, but then Bea Arthur shows up again from part of the house/set that she shouldn't have been able to come from. It was a very funny breaking the fourth wall moment.

arryana Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

another fave is the episode where blanche goes out with dorothy's blind date so dorothy can go see a beatles cover band and ends up bringing 'ringo' home...she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah!

Dtom Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Two episodes always come to mind for me:
1. The one where they sing Mr. Sandman to the baby, and Dorothy sings the low parts ("YEEEESS?")
2. The finale, where Dorothy is leaving with Leslie Nielsen, she leaves, then comes back, then leaves, then comes back through the back door, then leaves, and Rose stands there waiting for her to come back another way...cracks me up every time.

Cristina Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

A hurricane's a-comin'! I watch GG as much as possible but the one that makes me laugh until my sides hurt is where Sophia predicts a hurricane is coming and wears a sweatshirt saying "Take me now Hurricane '87" or something similar. And Dorothy's sister sleeps with Stan and Stan says "Good news Dorothy, I'm off the monkey." I am laughing now. It was a traffic cone made up to look like a monkey - ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

I LOVE it that other people remembered the murder mystery as well! That is my all time fave GG episode!

meredith Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

The dance contest when an oh-so-obvious stunt double does Rose's dance with cartwheels!! Love it.

Henny Penny Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I thought of the murder mystery also - what brilliant writers and actors this show had, that we all still love and adore it so many years after the finale!! AND I was born on Betty White's birthday!

Craig Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

"We're heads!!!"

Crystal Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Ep that first comes to mind is the one with the Miami song. Also re: GG - I often find myself saying "picture it, Sicily" before I tell a story, but some people don't get it.

Betty White ROCKS!

Dave Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

The Golden Girls rules! I'm 25 and watched this all the time with my grandmothers when they'd babysit me. All of the really funny (aka, dirty) stuff flew over my head, but I still thought it was great, and love it even more now. The first episode that comes to mind is the one where Blanche's brother and his boyfriend come to visit. At one point she says, "What will the neighbors think if they see two men lying in my bed?" After a beat, Sophia responds, "They'll think it's Tuesday!" Hilarious. And happy birthday to Betty!

Mark Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

It's my birthday, too! I'm glad to share it with such a delightful lady.

1. "Ladies of the Evening" is my boyfriend's favorite episode, but I prefer the Valentine flashback episode where the ladies found themselves at a nude resort.

2. They're buying condoms because they're going on a cruise and want to be protected.

Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Ahhh the golden girls. live it. learn it. love it. since it's for awesome betty white, my favorite Rose moment is when Dorothy needs help telling Sophia she's not invited on her trip with Raymond. That comic book story is classic!!! I love when Dorothy just snaps and goes, that's it get out! Get out! "That's what the crow said!" Comic Gold! Happy Birthday Betty!

DUH Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

The Case of the Libertine Belle!!!

When the ladies go to the Murder Mystery weekend, and Blanche is framed for murder!! I DIE EVERY TIME!

carla Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

In one episode, Rose, having a bad day, asked, "Have you ever just wanted to crawl under the covers and eat Velveeta right out of the box?" Well, who HASN'T been there? Happy birthday, Betty!

shawn Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Priest: You look nice.
Dorothy: Please. I look like the mother of a Solid Gold dancer.

marilinda Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Rose: How about Miami is nice, so i'll say it thrice!

Dorothy: Who the hell says thrice?!

Rose: It's a word!!

Dorothy: So is interuterine. It does not belong in a song.

and then later, that same episode...

Blanche: here Big Daddy, sit here on the couch betwixt us.

Dorothy: Betwixt!!??

Rose: See, Dorothy, there's another word you don't know!!

oh, the Golden Girls make me miss my grandma...

Pinwiz Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Three words:

"Lesbian? Lesbian. LESBIAN."

Ronda Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

My favorite is when mean old Mrs. Klackstan dies and the girls decide to plan her memorial service and the funeral's director name was Pfifer and the p wasn't silent. Sophia asked if he was like a ppunch in his pface! LOL! Classic!

Kelly Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Man, I LOVE The Golden Girls! Happy Birthday Betty!!!! I've enjoyed reading everyone's favorties...some have made me literally laugh out loud as I rememeber them. I always remember the murder-mystery episode that Sophia was "in" on and also I enjoyed watching Rose and Miles. They were so cute together.

Love Betty White! Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

The first episode that comes to mind is when they're doing some dance-a-thon and it's down to the wire and Rose busts out these gymnastics moves. And of course there are many sequined dresses involved.

Will Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

The one where the girls are buying condoms and clerk does a price check on the black condoms.

Shannon Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

Betty White rules! I just saw a re-run the other day with George Clooney as a detective. He was awesomely bad.

shawn Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Blanche: Jonathan is a guest in my home. To treat him as anything other that that would be unsouthern.
Dorothy: That's a good Belle!
Blanche: (walks into living room with a tray) Shrimp? (does 180 and flies back into kitchen)

Leann Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

I just love all the St. Olaf stories. And Rose's pure innocence and dumbness.

Kathleen Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Verity - yes!! That was the one that popped into my mind first too - "Thrice - just because it's a word doesn't mean it belongs in a song. Interuteran is a word too."
"Miami, you're cuter than . . . an interuteran . . . "
That's my fave Golden Girls moment, but my favorite Betty White moment was hearing her say "****ring" at Shatner's roast. That was full of win.

MKS Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

Betty White's Rose is the best! I love the scene when she's at the table with Sophia, who says "I said quiet!" Of course, in classic Rose fashion, she retorts with "I said coffee!" in a later scene.

Kimberly Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

OMG! I LOVE the Golden girls. I used to watch it as a kid with my dad!

I love the episode where Blanche is up all night writing a novel. And she comes into the kitchen half delirious, and she sees the bag where Rose had been putting all the egg yolks, and wonders "why there are little balls of sunshine in a bag."

anderbeaujohnson Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I always think of the Father Frank Leahy episode where Blanche insists he's hitting on Dorothy. And of course - they needed condoms for their romantic cruise with their gentleman companions!

Golden Baby Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

the first ep (or should i say scene) that comes to mind is when blanche realizes what her face looks like hovering over someone from above. ha!

Sara Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Oh, oh, and Sophia and Rose open a sandwich shop at the beach. Bacon Lettuce and Potato. Say it fast. Bacon Lettuce and Potato.

Joe Mello Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

Oh, so many are good.

I love the one where Rose talks about the herring circus and tiny, little ginsu knives.

So many funny, classic lines. Blanche: I'm jumpier than a virgin at a prison rodeo.
Dorothy: That's pretty jumpy.

Dorothy just saying "Shady Pines, Ma."

Always good for a laugh.

Sara Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

I love the Miami song one.

My favourite, though, is the one where Rose is terrified of giving a eulogy, Dorothy is terrified of flying, and Blanche is terrified of bald men... So, of course, they end up flying to the funeral on a plane full of former Mr. Cleans.

EM Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

Rose writes the letter to the president or something and they think it's written by one of her brownie scouts.

Stef Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

Depressingly enough, the first one that came to mind was the one where they sneak into the reunion and Rose has a heart attack.

Verity Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

Sorry, didn't mean to repeat myself :)

dwight Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

The one where the guys dies during/after sleeping with Rose and at the end she makes up the story that another guy died during sex and then she says she told the sheriff about how men die when they sleep with her and he didn't believe her so she sleeps with him and he dies. And Dorothy and Blache were so pissed that she lied. Hahah. After they storm out of the kitchen Rose says, "I thought it was funny." I crack up every time. Betty is my favorite!

Verity Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

*singing* Miami is nice...So I'll say it twice! Miami is nice! Miami is nice! Miami is nice! *stops singing* Wait...that's more than twice.

And if you want to know why they're buy condoms, just ask yourself...has Syphilis ever been accused of age discrimination?

And if you want to know why they're buy condoms, just ask yourself...has Syphilis ever been accused of age descrimination?

josher Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

The episode when they went to St. Olaf for Rose's award.

Betty White is a national treasure.

When I was barely out of diapers in the early 1950's, she had a show called "Life With Elizabeth." She played a ditzy wife who turned everyone's life upside down in fifteen minutes. I still remember how funny she was.

JohnO Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

The episode when Rose's boyfriend has a heart attack and dies in her bed.

Kelly Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

I don't remember exactly what happened in the episode, but it's the one where Sophia makes up a song to "thanks for the memories" and it's something like... "thanks for the memories, from blue cross and blue shield, my hip that never healed..."

GGLover Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Happy Birthday Betty! I love this show! It was on when I was a young girl, and I used to watch it with my parents. Now I watch the reruns whenever I can, and I've realized they were hilarious and dirty Girls!

Episode - When the Girls serve food at the church for Christmas, Stan shows up broke, then comes back as Santa and gives the kids toys, and the priest chastises the Reagan/Bush administrations for totally failing America's most needy. Great episode.

The Girls are buying condoms because they're going on a romantic cruise, and they want to be safe. They were so ahead of their time!

Lyn Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Miami, Miami, you got style.
Blue skies, sunshine, white sand by the mile.

Allison Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I LOVE the Golden Girls. I am under 30 and have loved them for almost 10 years. I own every season on dvd even. My favorite episode is either the one where Dorothy has a crush on a priest or Rose dates a little person!! Happy birthday Betty!

Anna Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

I don't remember any specific episodes but my favorite Rose story (that I recite to myself often), is the delightfully inane "Boy Who Never Cried Wolf."

arryana Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

i LOVE the girls! they're buying condoms because they are going on a cruise with their boyfriends...but rose (bless her) uses hers as water balloons. one of my fave eps is the one where dorothy's boyfriend hits on blanche...'i lost anderbo and her beau, now do you understand why i can't tell dorothy?' rose's response: 'i don't even know who anderbobo is!' ohhh, hi-larious...

ppppeppy Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

the one with the Miami song. and when dorthy and sophia dress like sonny and cher.

Ames Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

I actually watched Golden Girls this morning before leaving for work -- Rose gets sick and later wants to really live. She moves out, but then moves back in.

MAC Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

Rose is sexually harrassed by her dentist.

HatchetFace Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

The episode where the do a "Chicken Little" musical! The wherefore and why is best left unsaid.
