Who Are the Best Indie Bands of All Time?

Jan 30, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Leah Greenblatt

Categories: Music

Flaminglips_l To me, as a music critic, bands are like my very own babies — objects so personal and close to my heart, I couldn't possibly pick a favorite, unless you paid me extra. But EW is taking on that maddeningly Sophie's Choice decision in an upcoming print piece, and we want reader input! I realize that "indie" is a nebulous term these days, but let's just say that Sonic Youth, whether or not they're now on a big, corporate-teat-sucking major label, absolutely still count. They are freaks. Good freaks. As are Modest Mouse, the Flaming Lips (pictured), Built to Spill, and a number of other truly fantastic bands that just happen to be on major labels now. And it also stands to reason that there are some amazing artists I’m not yet aware of who may still, at this moment, be selling homemade tapes from the back of a burned-out van.

Sorry, but they don't count here because we are talking about 25 classics, straight up. Was it all downhill when the blistering punk power of acts like the Stooges, X, and Wire dissipated? Do you pine for the all-American glory days of '80s all-stars Hüsker Dü, the Pixies, and the Replacements? Is it the '90s boom — Sebadoh, Bonnie Prince Billy, Tortoise, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, etc. — that still makes your heart beat beneath your Captain Beefheart t-shirt? Or do you look to Cool Britannia, at names like the Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, PJ Harvey, the Stone Roses, The Cure, Joy Division? Do artists who've had major commercial success (R.E.M., Radiohead, Björk, Talking Heads, Nirvana, Pearl Jam) not belong here? We can't keep the kiddies away either —t hose Shins and Strokes and Arcade Fires and other indie-come-latelies.

Already, my head is a too-full colander of personal favorites: The White Stripes! Dinosaur Jr! Fugazi! Pavement! Elliott Smith! Oh my God, I'm just going to have to shut up. And pass it on to you, readers. Who has the catalogue, the talent, the longevity to belong in a list of only 25 great indie bands?

Portugal. The Man. Come on, these guys grab the earthen-ground sound that so many bands strive for so effortlessly.
And I can't beleive there haven't been more Bright eyes mentions.

BRIAN BERRY Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

A lot of you really know your stuff when it comes to indie bands. But most of you saying that "circa survive" is indie, don't know what's up. I highly suggest "The Arcade Fire". Indie has less to do with the acutal classification and more to do with the sound. Its not punk, its not rock, its not anything classic. Its that feel good indie vibe. The postal service kinda pulls it off. Wolf Parade, Tripping Daisies...lots of other bands i don't even know about

vf Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:12 AM EST

rahrah Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 06:25 AM EST

Magnetic Fields is the only right answer. Anyone who doesn't say them has probably never heard of them.

Second is the Smiths, then probably The Cure or something. Sure there's things like Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and Arch in Helsinki goin' on but these guys are the reaaaal thing.

some of the things here are lol worthy though.

Ben Wach Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Disptach has to be towards the top, they brough indie into the modern era.
Then theres also gotta be the strokes.
Regina Spektor is truely great. ben Kweller is another modern one.

Peter Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

Other bands so underrated it makes me genuinely angry:

The Thermals
The Hot Snakes

What about Tom Waits or Elvis' first four albums? Do these guys qualify as "bands"? Tom's longevity is a thing of wonder, he's just as good today! Elvis' current work...well I liked him as a Letterman guest-host. But he was an absolute genius.

Peter Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

A difficult question, especially since no one is ever sure if these listmakers are talking about the bands who make the best MUSIC, or make the biggest DIFFERENCE. Often it seems like a thoughtless mishmash of the two, one side often being neglected in favor of the other. Are we listing bands that embody the indie ETHIC? The indie SOUND? The indie SPIRIT? Does anyone know what any of those are? Anyway here's what I've got to say:

The Wrens' Meadowlands record is unequivocally one of the most under-appreciated pieces of art anywhere in the world at any time in history. It's on par with an OK Computer or a Sgt. Pepper's. Did I stutter?

Should we continually dote on the dead and the dying, pretending those who pioneered a sound are somehow superior to those who refined, expanded and perfected it? Is the calculator somehow better than the dual-core laptop? Do people even LISTEN to this music?

1. The Wrens
2. Radiohead
3. Okkervil River
4. Spoon
5. The Constantines
6. Wilco

Jason Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

in no order.

Safe Cat
The Beaks
Orlof's Bowl

Diana Mon, Mar 3, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

The Velvet Underground, The Strokes, The Shins, Regina Spektor (I'm suprised no one's mentioned her yet), Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Moldy Peaches, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Bright Eyes, Radiohead, The Stooges, My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Cribs, The Arcade Fire, The Blood Brothers, The Stone Roses, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand.

and even though they're more indie hiphop/techno, M.I.A. and Crystal Castles deserve to be on that list.

Rich Sun, Mar 2, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

If Sonic Youth counts then Nirvana counts, Sonic Youth signed to DGC before Nirvana did. In fact the members Sonic Youth were partially responsible for getting Nirvana signed to DGC.

zeno duran Sun, Feb 10, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

i believe that indie music is proof that you can still be an artist unbound by established commercial formulas that the big recording lables use to guide the masses like sheep from one recipe to the next. and though i will still listen to a mainstream band if i feel that they too tried to be creative in thier recording and song writing, such as radiohead, talkingheads, the beatles, the kinks, smashing pumkins and the smiths.( are they mainsteam ? im not sure.)but if i may, i realy feel that a lot of so called indie bands that are being born today are starting to fall into the habit of biteing (as the old skool rappers use to say) off of popular recordings and sounds of other bands, causing their work to loose its edge and fall into the formula trap that in the end will make thier efforts become null and void, posibly forgotten, like a ship piloted by primus, sailing the seas of cheese. heres my list. johnny cash, daniel johnson, half japanesse, bob marley, echo and the bunnymen,& devo

Martha Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

If I had to pick some "newer" bands:
Arcade Fire
My Morning Jacket
Rilo Kiley
Beirut
Death Cab
Interpol
Eels
And I forgot Cocteau Twins and Pulp on my old favorites list - absolutely essential.

Martha Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I'm with Scott P - can you call Radiohead an indie band if they signed to EMI? Ditto the Smiths, who were on Sire? Or do you just mean what used to be called "alternative" bands? If the latter, I'll second old favorites like Radiohead (Best.Band.Ever), the Smiths, the Pixies, Flaming Lips (anyone else remember when they performed on 90210?), and Pavement. I have a bunch of new favorites also, but haven't decided yet whether they'll stand the test of time...

karen Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Spoon, for consistency and so much more.

April Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

Hanson is the best indie band around right now, no question!

CentreChick Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

I have to post, you can't have a list here of best indie bands and not include Gomez. You just can't omit them.

Gracie Beth Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

Of Montreal and the Decemberists are fantastic.
But Scissor Sisters are #1 in my book.

Lars Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

the monks
The Pogues

Tom Waits
I think Pearl Jam is, but maybe not originally
The Grifters

Joy Division
The Smiths

Radiohead
Arcade Fire
The Pixies
Neutral Milk Hotel? - even if they had 2 albums
Interpol

dumb question but was Weezer ever considered indie...we'd never have "emo" if it wasn't for them...

Grandaddy, They Might be Giants, Supergrass and Cake also came to mind today. Though I still stand by The Ramones as the greatest.

Dave Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

For all time:

Black Flag
Fugazi
Husker Du
Depeche Mode
The Smiths

They blazed a trail across the face of music one fan at a time. Black Flag blazed a trail literally. the Lewis and Clark of DIY punk.

Honorable Mention: R.e.m. - No band exemplified indie/college/alternative in the 80's. However, IRS was distributed by EMI, placing their records in magazines and other media outlets that Black Flag couldn't dream of in a million years. Rolling Stone gave Murmur Album of the Year honors in 1983. How could SST, or Touch and Go compete with that?

I tend to like the Scrubs montage bands (Shins, Death Cab), but they'll never have the impact that those bands did.

SUFJAN STEVENS...i can even begin to explain

Neutral Milk Hotel

Vulgar Boatmen

Young Fresh Fellows
The Dictators

Andrea Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

I would STRONGLY recommend, popwatch, you include Elliott Smith on your Indie List. His music was the definition of independent (sorry Radiohead, I love ya, but indie you are not) and still highly underrated today. His vocal harmonies and hushed melodies were a breakthrough in his time, and he was an influence newer indie bands like the Shins.

A Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Ben Folds Five.

Clementine Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

In no particular order... The Shins, Band of Horses, Iron and Wine, The Dandy Warhols, The Pixies, The White Stripes, Porcupine Tree

Dawn Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

The obvious ones: Death Cab, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Shins, Dandy Warhols, Pixies, Dispatch (good call David King), Spoon, Broken Social Scene, Flaming Lips, Theivery Corp.

Not yet mentioned: Mates of State, Rilo Kiley, Postal Service (?), Jamiroquai, ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra), Starlight Mints, Cake, The Fratellis, The Format, Frou Frou, Ivy, Jose Gonzalez, Of Montreal, Stars, The Perishers, Phoenix, Portishead

New faves: Rock Kills Kid, The Damnwells, Fiction Plane

Alba Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Hanson is the best......¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

Under no circumstances should REM, Nirvana, Talking Heads or Pearl Jam make this list. They are full-on mainstream acts with heavy radio play. Oh, and NO VELVET UNDERGROUND. It just doesn't make sense at this point.

Bjork, Radiohead: Fair territory as they never have and likely won't break out of their relative niche fan populations.

Let's not forget Television, Buzzcocks, Jesus and Mary Chain, Galaxie 500, and My Bloody Valentine.

Would love to see some indie hip hop make the list: Company Flow (El-P), Aesop Rock, Non-Prophets (Sage Francis), Cannibal Ox, and DJ Shadow are worthy additions.

Holly Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Hanson, for sure. They rock!

The Fall - this Manchester-based group has been in existence in one form or another since 1976, has issued more than 25 studio albums and countless live albums, and has
been an influence over a legion of indie bands like Pavement and Sonic Youth.

Becca Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

If you're going to pick some newer stuff, you've got to include Bright Eyes (all of Conor's albums are brillant) and Arcade Fire (they only have two albums but both of them are amazing).

Gwen Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

The Pixies...and, um...the Pixies!

esbeerod Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

If I have to pick one it's no contest: The White Stripes. The riff of "Seven Nation Army" seals the deal.

Citizen Cope

Brilliance.

Dave Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Pavement is #1, but that leaves only 24 and some great ones are going to be left out. I'd say you have to have The Replacements, The Pixies, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, Death Cab, Elliott Smith and Spoon.

The Shins, Arcade Fire, and The Hold Steady only have 2-3 records, but they're great records. Can you recognize Neutral Milk Hotel? They have a tiny catalogue, but they made everyone's favorite record.

Do The Cocteau Twins and This Mortal coil count?

lonnie Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

to mention sonic youth and dinosaur jr as indie bands works fine for me because their relevant work appeared on indie labels. they were two of the most important and influential bands in history. the '80s built the indie movement, and the '90s cashed in. look at sst in the '80s and matador/drag city in the '90s. top 10 (in order): sonic youth, pavement, fugazi, dinosaur jr., husker du, will oldham (under many names), animal collective, bongwater, superchunk, minutemen. indie has become a genre, which opens a much wider debate; before money was involved, the ethos were stronger by default. what comes out of the speakers will always be more important.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Karen O is pretty crazy and amazing, and if you don't tear up a little bit at "Maps," then there's no hope for you.

david king Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

spoon
modest mouse
dispatch (only indie band to ever sell out madison square garden)

erin Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

PAVEMENT. Spoon is a very very close second. Other great indie bands (and, I tend to think in the 90s and beyond): Pixies, Destroyer, Giant Sand/Howe Gelb, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sleater-Kinney, Quasi, Silver Jews, Guided by Voices, The Magnetic Fields, Palace/Palace Brothers/anything with Will Oldham, Big Black, Shellac, Neko Case.

I'm sure that I could keep going with this list, but I'll stop for now.

Dan TO Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

f you're definition is that they haven't kowtowed to a label then Led Zeppelin hits the nail on the head, yet no one would call them "indie" because of their success. Likewise the Barenaked Ladies are still doing the same thing as when they were "indie" but are likely considered too “pop”.

What you're really trying to articulate is some not-quite-definable measure of coolness around artists who are perceived to defy the mainstream and live by their own rules. The reality is that "rebellion" has been the most consistent marketing ploy since popular music was invented. I play in a band that covers 70s punk, yet I have no illusions that the Sex Pistols and the Spice Girls are any different. It's not to suggest that many artist are not sincere about being "indie" but we should also be able to laugh at ourselves as fans for buying into the marketing.

Ep Sato Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I was going to say Fugazi, but Ms. Greenblatt is totally on the money and mentioned them.

That said, they deserve the props. Ian Mckay, Fugazi, Minor Threat and their indy label Dischord Records have not only helped to create straightedge AND Emo, but they've continued to support local bands while keeping their Independent label truly independent.

jamie Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

when it comes down to it EVERY band and for that matter label was at one time an "indie". so, which ever 25 bands you like would compile the 25 all time best indie band. and yes in my opinion the ramones would probably top that list.

indiefan Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

sure they only "broke through" just last year on a couple of music blogs and a host of critics lists, but Deerhunter have quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. they perfectly embody the DIY culture usually associated with "indie" music. their lives shows are legendary. and on their blog, band members post new, unreleased music seemlingly every twenty minutes!! you just know that a major label wouldn't stand for that!!

Hamburger Royal Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

I think Stiff Kittens/Warsaw/Joy Division/New Order should definitely be included as few indie-origin bands have ever shown such a musical versatility. Other than that, what would this list be without the Sex Pistols.

Larry Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

Scissor Sisters!

John Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Guided by Voices and/or Robert Pollard. Dozens of releases, more than 1,000 songs, most of them good. Their story is amazing, their career arc comically tragic and their business acumen otherworldly. Check out www.tirbd.com/min for My Impression Now, a song-by-song look at the genius.

Scott P Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

Sigur Ros
Sufjan Stevens
Arcade Fire

Although they are my favorite bands of the world, you definitely cannot count bands like The Flaming Lips and Radiohead, since they do (or did for Radiohead) have the major labels backing and supporting them for a number of years during their rise to fame.

kari Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Hanson is by far the best indie band I know. I am sure everyone remembers their 1997 hit MMMBop, but since then, the band has gone on their own. They now have their own record label, 3CG Records, and are doing their own thing. Their music has prgressed into an amazing rock sound that is very hard to stop listening to. Check out their new stuff on hanson.net

Nicole R. Steeves Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Beck (one-man band?), Sigur Ros, Magnetic Fields, Sloan, Sleater-Kinney, Handsome Family, Robbie Fulks, Canasta

nycgirllms Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Joy Divison, The Cure--They have influenced generations of kids to pick up guitars and put their bad poetry to music. Many of today's bands--The Klllers, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, etc.--wouldn't exist if it wasn't for these legends. End of story.

Strepsi Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

Great topic, byut you and EW have to do a waaaaaay better job of defining "Indie Band" - is it only punk/alt-rock? Never had a major label success? Really unclear, but WTF i'll take a stab:
1) GRATEFUL DEAD
2) FLAMING LIPS
3) DEAD KENNEDYS
4) THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
5) THE RAMONES
6) RADIOHEAD
7) THIEVERY CORPORATION
8) R.E.M.
9) NOMEANSNO
10) THE SUGARCUBES

There are still a lot of great indie bands out there, The Walk Up, Albert Hammond Jr, Midnight Movies etc. Personally for me, I still consider older indie bands that hit it big (Nirvana, Radiohead) to be indie because kids still have to find them. Of the ones mentioned, I'm going with the Strokes.

Chris Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

The Minutemen, The Pixies, Pavement, Uncle Tupelo, and Husker Du are hard to beat.

Rose Tyler Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

The Ramones. Not only did they create a genre they worked their tails off for years to get the respect they deserved.

Scott Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

Truly indie Florida band Bernard should definitely be on the list.

Brad in Edmonton Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

Put The Pixies firmly at the top of the list. Best. Band. Ever.

Paula Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 07:39 AM EST

I think that REM is still an indie band, and one of the best, as along with the White Stripes.
But in this decade I have to say that Death Cab For Cutie.

Paula Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

RobC Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

Aimee Mann - Yes, this singer/songwriter made her debut with the hit "Voices Carry" twenty years ago, but she has shown how an artist can remain independent by changing the way she does business in her later years. It's unlikely that you'll see one of her CDs at Wal-Mart or hear her songs on the radio, but this former pop star has crafted some of the finest displays of emotion and has a devoted following. That's a true indie for you.

Lasurie Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 06:11 AM EST
