Whose new trailer is funnier: Eva Longoria's or Adam Sandler's?

Dec 21, 2007, 03:00 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers

Trailers_l Quick! Which sounds more promising: A big summer vehicle for a consistently bankable box-office star whose last three comedies have grossed $119 million, $137 million, and $158 million respectively, or an early February release starring that tabloid-staple Desperate Housewife who (fair or not) never seems to get nominated for anything?

Wait! Don't answer yet. First, let's make this a super scientific study: Grab a pen and a scrap of paper, and watch both trailers (embedded after the jump). Jot down how many times you laugh (slight, bemused exhalations count; horrified gasps do not) while watching each trailer, rendering your subjective opinions irrelevant in the process. Once you're done, post your tallies in the comments section below.

I'll kick things off with my personal laugh count: Over Her Dead Body, 6; You Don't Mess With the Zohan, 0. Be warned: The former features clumsy-heroine-makes-messes clichés; the latter portrays Adam Sandler as an irresistible stud who excites middle-aged women by (among other things) licking their hair. Now click through and press play; I shouldn't have to endure these things by myself.

Zero and zero. Poor Paul Rudd.

jcdc13 Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

Both were pretty awful. Eva on DVD, Adam never.

harry Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 01:31 PM EST

all this is really is female vs male sense of humor.

Fennell Tue, Dec 25, 2007 at 12:14 AM EST

Dead:II
Zohan:IIIIII

Cam Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

I liked both about the same, but will see neither until it's on DVD.

Amber Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

Dead: 3--only because of P. Rudd, will see it only if forced
Zohan: 0--could never be forced to see that trash, can someone please stop adam sandler!!

BinkyM Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

For those who keep calling Rob Schneider a "racist" for the "Chuck and Larry" movie: Rob's half Filippino. Now can we get over it, please?

AH Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

I stopped the Longoria one before it was over. I didn't laugh once.

Andie Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

Oh geez...why doesn't Adam Sandler just stop making movies already?? My boyfriend loves him and thinks he's the funniest thing to hit the screen in the last 30 years. I just don't get it. This Zohan thing seems like just another lame Sandler and friends vehicle (Rob Schneider, you are not funny. You are borderline racist...does anyone remember his Asian wedding chapel owner from Chuck and Larry? Go away, Rob Schneider. Forever.)

Eva Longoria's film did make me chuckle, even if it is just fluff. I probably won't see either of them, though. I'd rather save my money for a film that won't stink.

Katherine Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

I lol at "Over her dead body"
The scene when she's floating over them while getting busy- hilarious!
Adam Sandler's just made me cringe!

Layla Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

Her Dead Body is a rental -- Paul Rudd just can't seem to be bad.

Zohan -- I'm glad Sandler thinks Hezbullah is so funny -- it looks horribly offensive and very anti-arab.

Martha Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

Dead: 3 laughs, all at Paul Rudd. Dude is funny. Eva...not so much.
Zohan: 1/2 laugh, when Sandler says "That for you" and hits newscaster guy in the face with his foot.
(Hey, what can I say, I still think farts are funny!)

kana Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 01:19 AM EST

My combined love for Eva Longoria and Paul Rudd is outmatched only by my consistent annoyance with Lake Bell in anything she's in. Too bad. Coulda been really good!

BinkyM Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

I didn't laugh at the Eva Longoria trailer once; the "Zohan" traler, OTOH, made me go to the "Zohan" official site, because I'm one of those Sandler "morons" who can't get enough of him. Yeah, I know his accent is mangled French, but I'm delighted that he's working to (FINALLY!) get rid of his paunch (he looks *terrific* here), I think his (fake) hair looks *great*, and I'm also a Rob Schneider moron, and I'm not going to be able to sit tight until "Zohan" is released this coming summer. Yeah, well, you know *someone's* buying all those tickets, and that someone is me. Zohan can cut my hair and wiggle inappropriately against me any time he wants to!

aa Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 01:10 PM EST

none for zohan. 7 for her dead body, eva l. floating above lake bell and paul rudd mentioning tori amos were my faves. having been an eva longoria fan since y&r i'm not surprised but who knew lake bell could be funny? also good to see jason biggs. still not gonna see it in the theatre though. if there are no explosions and car chases i wait for the dvd.

Mozz Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

Over her dead body = 3.5 laughs.
Adam Sandler - I stopped the trailer at 1.19 --- but i'm going to declare Adam Sandler the hit, cause well, I know that sophomoric humor goes a long way in the box office.

AssaultOnTheSenses.com Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 05:15 AM EST

I agree with Carrie: Some Rudd goes a long way. The Adam Sandler movie looks funny too, but it'd be better if he wasnt trying so hard to channel his inner Borat...

Sally Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 02:07 AM EST

Like laurie, I don't like Sandler, but I would see this one.

Carrie Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

Dead wins just for the Paul Rudd factor.

Laurie Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

Dead - 0. Paul Rudd is likable enough but he doesn't do much for me and Lake Bell REALLY doesn't do much for me. I saw the Zohan trailer a few days ago and laughed more than once, even though I can't stand Sandler.

davidsask Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 10:01 AM EST

My God How can Adam stoop so low at this point in his career, is he really that hard up. Awful mess. The other one is at least a good renter when hits dvd.

Jonah Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

Didn't keep count, but slightly more for "Dead Body" - all the bits which DID NOT include Eva. As for Sandler & his faux Israeli accent.... ugh. The Vulcan next pinch did elicit a smirk.

Dru Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:56 PM EST

Watching Eva get flattened by the ice sculpture was fun.

I have to wonder if Adam Sandler even bothers to read the script before filming starts anymore.

Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:38 PM EST

Dead= 4 (All courtesy of Paul Rudd)
Zohan=0

Katya Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

Zohan = -2
Dead = 3 + 5 paul rudd points = 8

Valerie Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:24 PM EST

Dead = 5 definitely a rental. Hey, I have a thing for Paul Rudd ! So sue me !!! :)
Zohan = 1 (the 2000 years joke) Probably won't rent it, sounds kind of offensive...

mel Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:53 PM EST

Eva = 5 (or should it be Ruud?)
Adam = 6
Zohan with the foot thing and the hezbollah automated operator,pretty funny. Although I know the movie will be inconsistent like most of Sandler's efforts. Over my dead body could be funny, but I get the feeling we just saw the best parts and those barely brought a smile to my face. Ruud can do better than this. Both rentals in my netflix queue 2 months after they release.

Laura Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:58 PM EST

Dead: 5
Zohan: 5
But I refuse to waste my time with either.

Sidenote: I saw an absolutely heinous poster for Dead that looked like an 8 year-old's first foray into Photoshop. I want some commentary on *that*.

Jonathan F. Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

Over Her Dead Body, 2; You Don't Mess With the Zohan, 2. all bemused exhalations. and they both look terrible.

Buddy Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST

Dead = 0
Zohan = 2
But to be fair I won't spend money on either of them. They are both "HBO" movies.

Jon Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

Didn't laugh at either, wouldn't see either.

monica Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

i would like to first preface this by saying that i was already laughing because of what you wrote, so i was in a giddy mood.
Longoria-Parker/Rudd = 8
Sandler = 5.
But I have to say that those 5 were bigger/louder laughs than the 8. When he touches the kid's nerve to put him to sleep i couldn't stop laughing. the foot thing was really funny and so was the part where he though saying "kangaroo" was how he'd prove he was australian. not to mention, Rudd should just live with Judd Apatow so he'll never be subjected to lowering himself like this again. It may be funny but it isn't worth $12.

jr Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 06:26 PM EST

adam sandler is an idiot! anyone who sees any of his moronic "comedies" is also an idiot!

Raven_Moon Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

Including slight smiles...

"Over Her Dead Body"=9 (I do love Paul Rudd)
"You Don't Mess with the Zohan"=4

Sam I Am Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 05:27 PM EST

Dead: rental at some point
Zothan: uh, never

Vince Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 05:18 PM EST

Dead: 3
Zohan:3

Even though the Eva pic looks more charming and cutesy, I'd like to point out that this is being put out by New Line, same guys who brought us "Monster-In-Law". That movie's trailer looked surprisingly decent too, and we all know how that turned out.

donner Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

i prob won't bother seeing either, but the Eva movie did look a little more charming than Sandler's...did I see Deuce Biggalo driving the cab? Oh dear god, no way I'm going now...

hellboundhalo Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Eva: 6
Adam: 3

I actually think that the Eva one looks like it could be pretty good. I mean, Paul Rudd is usually hilarious.

Jean Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

As someone who spent time in Israel and Palestine, I chuckled once at Zohan, for an inside joke. Other than that, they both look horrific.

skye Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:23 PM EST

Over Her Dead Body- 10, Two extreme outbursts when teh mustard fell all over her, and when teh dudes arm caught on fire

Don't Mess With Zohan- 3, The foot thing was kind of funny, but I rolled my eyes ten times more. I'll wait till this comes on TV

Traci Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:13 PM EST

I actually liked them both but I'm easily amused :)
Eva - 8
Adam - 5

krikky Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

Paul Rudd is WAAAAAY too good for this drivel. What was he thinking?

Miss Dahlia Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

I'll take a RomCom any day over a Sandler flick. As far as Zohan goes, I think I'd rather see P.S. I Love You 10 times in a row instead. It would be less painful, I'm sure. peach-- I too loved that Shelly Long movie, and I must have a thing for movies where people come back as ghosts because I liked the Reese Witherspoon one and "All of Me" with Steve Martin as well.

Patty Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

Dead - 1 - when the said Eva Longoria Porter, when did she start using that name?
Zohan - 1 - for the Hezbollah voicemail
Neither one seems any good.

Courtney Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

Over Her Dead Body: 0
You Don't Mess With the Zohan: 1, when he makes the kid cry and then knocks him out. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Now I don't have to waste $25 at the theater.

peach Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

Eva's looks funnier but that's not saying much. That Sandler pile of crap looks awful and Over her dead body seems like an update of Shelly Long's stinker "Hello Again" which I secretly love by the way...

Applejax Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

I thought Paul Rudd had more self respect then this.

ann Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

1=0
2=0
Won't see either....

ann Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

1=0
2=0
Won't see either....

ktbuffy Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

I would definitely see Over Her Dead Body before the Sandler movie, but I'd probably wait for DVD. Still, there were some definite laughs in the first one.

Anjeliki Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

Not a single laugh, chortle or guffaw. In either. Closest I came to a reaction was when the announcer said, "Eva Longoria Parker."

Anthony Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

Over Her Dead Body: Funny You Don't Mess with the Zohan: Not. I smell a flop a brewing.

Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

Umm, my tally is 0 and 0. Yawn.
