Victoria's Secret Revealed: Heidi Can't Sing

Dec 14, 2007, 06:00 AM | by Kate Ward

Categories: 'Project Runway', Advertising, Ouch! That was my ear!

Okay, I love Heidi Klum. How could you not, what with her incredible — yet ultimately baffling — ability to look amazing while pregnant, not pregnant, and in between being pregnant (today's status: not pregnant)? Plus, anyone who is part model/part unintentional comedienne is okay in my book.

But as much as I adore the supermodel and Project Runway host, her multiple attempts to parlay her success into a singing career have proved more painful than a Naomi Campbell phone to the face. And though I would love to support the model's ever-burgeoning career, her heinously off-key vocals prove that she could out-Sanjaya the worst of Idol contestants. So why, oh why, for the love of Seal, has Victoria's Secret decided to revive Klum's scary-horrible "Santa Baby" commercial from last year's holiday season? Sure, she looks great, but I don't think my thumb can take having to hit the mute button much longer.

What do you think, PopWatch? Do you find the commercial bad in an adorable way, or do you, like me, think Seal should make a deal with his bride: "Don't sing, and I won't model brassieres"?

I think the commercial is cute, she may not be able to sing but its like a 2 sec part of the song :-).

Heidi will readily admit that she cannot sing, and did so in an interview in which she talked about the song Seal wrote for her and invited her to sing with him on the show. She's a great girl, quite down to earth, and a really astute entrepreneur. She recognizes that her singing is strictly for the sake of novelty. So find something else to write about, already, I swear you people are ridiculous.

Your last line confuses me. My guess is Seal isn't thinking that seeing as how they sung TOGETHER at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Oh god, I hate this commercial. She's cute but I hate her singing! She sounds more like she's talking! >_< She can't sing!

I actually didn't think it was that bad, either.

I must be tone deaf, I didn't think it was that bad. Besides would the company really let her sing if her voice was that bad? They'd have dubbed over it. Let's be honest, VS is not using her for her voice ;)

That "Naomi Campbell phone to the face" line was classic.

You don't want Seal to model brassieres???

fredric Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

She looks stunning. I would probably think that when straight men see her on the screen, her singing isn't the what's grabbing their attention.

"Heidi, you're out. Seal, you're in!"

At least Heidi had the guts to sing live on the VS Fashion Show broadcast, unlike the Spice Girls, who were so obviously lip-synching. Their mics weren't even on!

I guess this commercial just proves the point that beautiful women can get away with murder--even murder on our ears!

I love Heidi, and I love the commercial. Not because she has vocal talent, but because it has that "so bad it's good" quality. Personally, I don't think Marilyn Monroe had the greatest signing voice either, but her "Santa Baby" has become a classic because just like this commercial, it's fun.

And "Crank That" with a grammy nomination?? I did not need to see that!

GingerCat Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 08:56 AM EST

How could I not love Heidi Klum? Well, it's very, very difficult--but somehow I manage it.
Her VS commercial is kind of embarrassing (for her) and, worse, not the slightest bit sexy. Aren't VS ads supposed to be sexy? Isn't that kind of the point?

Mels Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 08:26 AM EST

They needed to bring back the old VS commericals from 2004- "Tell me there's no one else in the world like me." Those were outstanding commericals. Heidi Klum singing...is just tragic.

It would have been cute if it were a one tme thing. But, to me, the mutliple attempts do look like she's trying to get a record deal. Well, "Crank That" was just nominated for a grammy, so anything is possible.
