You Say You Want a (TV) Resurrection?

Dec 11, 2007, 12:05 PM | by Marc Bernardin

Categories: 'Heroes', Comic Books, I'm Just a Geek, PopWatch Petition, Sci-Fi, Television

I need a castle, preferably someplace in Eastern Europe. Nice living quarters, natch. Central air is a must. But it absolutely needs a spiffy Frankensteinian electric rig in the attic — because I want to bring stuff back to life. (And I'd love it if said castle were in black and white. I'm a purist, what can I say?)

Specifically, I want to bring some long-dead TV shows back from the dead. But the electric mojo will only work on programs that were taken before their time, snuffed just as they were revealing their true potential. In a world where there's no TCA press tour because there aren't really gonna be any new shows, reaching into the abyss and yanking back some gems is a perfectly valid dream.

And, since it's my dream, here are the shows I want back:

Firefly_lFirefly (pictured)  Easy call, I know. And given the fan machine behind Joss Whedon's sci-fi Western, this one has had more life than most dead shows: a feature film, multiple comic series, essay collections, etc. But, still. To see where Capt. Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion, who I've got a wee bit of a man-crush on) and his motley crew would've gone...ah, that's the stuff that geek dreams are made of.

Profit  A blue-black satire of corporate greed starring Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) as a sociopath raised—literally—by television who kills his way up the corporate ladder? Thank you, sir, may I have another? No? Bastards.

Nowhere Man  The criminally underused Bruce Greenwood (who was never better than as JFK in Thirteen Days) plays a photojournalist who snapped a war-zone picture that sends his life into a downward spiral into identity erasure. Like The Fugitive, it was about an innocent man — or so we're led to believe — on the run, trying to get his life back. Would've loved to have seen where he ran to.

What about you? Which late, lamented TV shows would you want back from beyond?

Firefly!!!! oh and More Firefly!!!!

And Serenity 2 also...

ValerieH Sat, Mar 29, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Joan of Arcadia
Homicide: Life on the Streets
Firefly

Representing the best of writing, humor and plotlines...so of course they could not last.

trynovar Tue, Mar 25, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

Firefly
Farscape
Wolf Lake - anyone remember this one? It had some of the best acting and had an outstanding set of plotlines. It was killed just as it was getting good. It had a horrible time slot and seemed to get bumped every other week for some "special" or another. Like Firefly, this one was killed before folks had a chance to find out about it.

Chet LaPrice Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

What is interesting is the trend towards the early cancellation of shows that seem to be very popular to the so-called "Generation X-ers" (of which I am one). Shows like Firefly, SportsNight, The Tick, Jericho, The Lone Gunmen, My So-Called Life, Arrested Development, and Freaks and Geeks all fit that particular genre. Possibly network TV never really fully learned how to market to our particular age group. Their loss, as we have the income to buy the things that TV likes to get advertisers for. Anybody remember Probe, on ABC during the late 80's? Very similar to Fox's X-Files which came later.

Re-do Man From Atlantis. Get Ron Moore from BSG to work on it.

jadzia dax Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:43 AM EST

oh, I forgot Martial Law with Sammo Hung. Big martial arts fan)love Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Baio(watch Dragon's Forever: great movie). On another note Homicide - Life on the street was well written and well performed. Also, a blast from the past - the time travels with the guy from Grease 2. I forget the name of the show.

jadzia dax Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

First of all Huge Buffy and Charmed fan, but they had a good run. Angel and Quantum Leap just for closure!! ST - DS9 could have been on several more seasons even though I missed Jadzia terribly. That 80's Show, Birds of Prey, Studio 60, Tru Calling, Dark Angel, The Kindred, Boomtown(great show!!)Tales of the Golden Monkey(big crush on Stephen Collins),News Radio, 3rd Watch(best ending ever; great closure),West Wing(4 more years), old MTV when it played videos. I think there should be a flashback channel that would play old videos(I want my MTV). The funniest show so far Whose Line Is It Anyway? - can't get enough!! John Doe and Nowhere Man

Ginger Metcalf Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

I miss "thirtysomething"...why is it not on DVD? Now that I am "thirtysomething" myself, I really miss Ken Olin.
Also:
--Homefront [I know Kyle Chandler is doing well on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS; Ken Jenkins is doing well on SCRUBS; and Tammy Lauren is doing well on Y&R but I really really miss HOMEFRONT. And I rue the day that it was cancelled for that godawful JAG...which had been cancelled by NBC and picked up by CBSnoozefest..]
And I'll give a shout out to THE GUARDIAN, my sister's favorite late great primetime show.

mdm Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

NBC-Those shows died out in the 70's and 80's for a reason!

LennyP Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

Recent shows that realistically could still be revived and should be:
Veronica Mars
Night Stalker
Invasion

Older shows that are less likely to have a realistic chance at returning, but that deserve to
Twin Peaks
EZ Streets
Pasadena
Profit
Once and Again

queen of disrepair Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 08:20 PM EST

My kids would be thrilled if Surface would come back - they loved that show!
I loved Roswell, Sports Night and I'd love for someone to try and give the Mel Brooks/Buck Henry Robin Hood spoof "When Things Were Rotten" another shot. Can NBC Overnight with another Lloyd Dobbinesque and Linda Ellerbee program be attempted again? Oh and Get A Life with Chris Elliot should be on the air.

Chris Johnston Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

I would've loved to see these brought back within 3 years of their original cancellation, and only with their original casts...

Alien Nation*
Brimstone
C16
Cupid
Dark Skies
Earth 2
EZ Streets
Farscape
Firefly
GvsE
Harsh Realm
High Incident
Mann & Machine
Max Headroom
Midnight Caller
Profit
Space: Above and Beyond
Spy Game
The State
Stingray (Nick Mancuso)
Strange Luck
Threshold
Vengeance Unlimited

*The follow-up movies set the standard for how such things need to be done!

Michael Satran Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 05:55 PM EST

Veronica Mars:

This really was the best TV show I've seen in quite a while. It's hard to do noir right, and it's harder to do it and get any sort of fanbase at all. The urban landscape of Neptune (The real main character) really made this show sizzle, and I loved all of the dirty little stories that made the town what it was.

Can it be saved? We sure hope so!

erin Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

Definitely Firefly
Tru Calling
Arrested Development
Sports Night
My So Called Life.

MP Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 05:38 PM EST

Studio 60 on the sunset strip
Popular
Animaniacs
Freakazoid

I'm loving "the big bang theory" lately..i am preemptively saying "bring it back" in case it does get the axe

Dave Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 05:38 PM EST

I LOVED Nowhere Man. I was sooo upset when UPN cancelled that. I also really, really loved Harsh Realm and was really upset that Fox didn't give that show a little more time to develop. I also really liked Invasion a lot. Jericho was a good show and I thought it was weak that CBS only agreed to do a miniseries to bring that show to fruition. I let myself watch two new shows this season: Journeyman, and Pushing Daisies. I've heard Pushing Daisies is doing well, but I'm gonna be bummed when they cancel Journeyman, which I expect will happen probably sooner rather then later. Stupid studio executives . . .

Keen Eddie was amazing, and frankly seven seasons of The West Wing was not enough for me. I need another few seasons of a Santos presidency.

pixiespymagic Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

Veronica Mars!!!

mickey Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

Arrested Development, The Comeback, Andy Barker P.I.

Vince Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

Arrested Develpoment
Futurama
Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Clerks the Animated Series
Freaks and Geeks
Undeclared (seeing what Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen can do with dirty words means this would have to be an HBO or Showtime production)
And I can't believe no one else on this list has voted to bring back the inspired lunacy of the short lived
CLONE HIGH
Bill Lawrence having the complete freedom of an animated show puts Scrubs and Spin City to shame. Name one other show that has ever had the balls to cast Michael J Fox in the guest role of a Lonley Kidney. (the organ, not the bean)
And for all the love given to Firefly, I'm glad that some people are speaking for its fellow Friday night death mate John Doe

And 30 Rock. A show that good has to get cancelled. It also had Will Arnett and Andy Richter as guest stars and Won the Emmy for best comedy. So we've got another half season in 2008-09 then its showtime for the Bluths, I mean Liz Lemon.

Josh Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

I totally forgot Slings and Arrows. The best written show I've ever seen but it only aired on Sundance.

RakuMon Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

Er... Journeyman?

And let me second the DS9 comment!

Long live Captain Sisko!

g Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

i don't know you, but I love you and Profit! I remember being disappointed when it was cancelled. bought the dvds for a friend as soon as they were released!

Melissa Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Dead Like Me - how can you NOT love a show about grim reapers?
Carnivale - I feel so cheated and unsatisified!
Crusade - am I the only person who remembers this spin off from Babylon 5? Quest to save the planet from a deadly virus within five years! Peter Woodward was a hoot as Galen, a technomage.

Okay, done geeking out now.

t3hdow Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

I'm one of the few who wanted to know what happened after Dark Angel season 2, but I can live past its cancellation. The same can be said with Drive. I just knew looking at the show it would be cancelled, though I'm still curious over how it ended. However, I'm still irritated over Reunion being cut off halfway through. Just when things started really getting heated in the past and present, Fox cut it off (they didn't even let the other remaining episodes run). Also, even though I arrived a little late to the Firefly party (I'm a Serenity convert), it didn't deserve to be cancelled.

Chandler Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

Arrested Development and Veronica Mars. I'm still holding out for those movie rumors.

anon Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

I'm surprised that I haven't seen listed a show that really needs to come back, Joan of Arcadia.

Seriously, I've been mad at CBS since they cancelled that show. Still mad.

American Gothic

yellowbug Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:56 PM EST

My top 5:
1 Firefly
2 Firefly
3 Firefly
4 Firefly
5 Firefly

PAL Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:50 PM EST

Boomtown - missing Donny Wahlberg on TV
Brooklyn South - good call!
Third Watch - didn't like the way it ended
Cupid - pre-Entourage Jeremy Piven didn't get a chance to shine
Some shameless, mindless, extra cheesy nighttime soap along the lines of Dallas, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, Flamingo Road (you know you watched!!) - Desperate Housewives is not quite doing it for me.

Minutiae Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

Now that Big Shots is dead, Christopher Titus is available to revive his s/t comedy, which was one of the funniest, most underrated sitcoms ever. Stacy Keach returning as Papa Titus is a must, though.

Bring back Veronica Mars! Seeing the great Kristen Bell on Heroes - a fun but not very smart show, makes me long for the wit and brilliance of Veronica Mars.
Ditto on Firefly too, of course, as well as the other Joss Whedon shows (Buffy, Angel) that should still be going on.

kmiller13 Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:31 PM EST

I'm going back a little bit farther, to the late 90's, with "Sports Night." One of the best sitcoms ever on TV.

Stephanie T. Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

I think that that only funny episode of "It's like...you know?" was the car chase episode where everyone was at home watching an OJ like character being chased by the police. The problem with the show was that the writer was trying to do another Seinfeld and of course Seinfeld can't be recycled.

How about "Due South", "Brooklyn South (which was pulled off the air for being too violent)", "Davis Rules!","Sibs", and "The 5 Mrs. Buchanans".

Day Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

Agreed on Firefly - if only to have been given a better ending!
Also American Dreams (which I haven't even seen all of, on accounts that NBC is dumb and will not put them all on DVD).
Veronica Mars shouldn't have been dead, but at least it got three good seasons.
Oh, and even though it was supremely cheesy and only lasted 12 episodes, I'd've loved to see more of Kindred: the Embraced. Updated for now, of course. Then, maybe it wouldn't be quite so cheesy. Maybe.

Kerri Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

God, Firefly, Firefly and more Firefly. I missed it while it was actually airing (thanks FOX...), saw Serenity in the theatre, fell in love with it, and was thrilled to find 14 wonderful Firefly episodes. I've lamented the loss of lots of my TV shows, but Firefly tops the list, by far.

moonshake Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

duh! I forgot CRIME STORY! Did Ray Luca and Michael Torello really go down in flames in a plane crash or did a last-minute miracle happen like at the end of Season 1 when Paulie Taglia & Ray Luca seemed to have blown up real good on the Nevada Nuclear testing range only to have made it out alive for Season 2? I wanna know. And "Paulie's Dream" - best episode.

Shaun Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

Glad to see a couple other people mentioned Deep Space Nine. For anyone interested (or if you missed one of the best shows of the 90's when it first aired) you can catch reruns on (ugh) Spike three nights a week: Mon.-Wed. nights late night.

What a shame such a great show gets such a cruddy timeslot. Also a shame that Firefly (while deserving) got a big screen revival but DS9 likely never will.

Baco Noir Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

Invasion, definitely Invasion (sigh, I miss that show!)
And if only to give the creators a chance to end them...
The Nine
Daybreak
The Fugitive remake (it ended with bullets heading towards the hero's head!)
Traveler

Shaun Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

I'm joinging this party late, so perhaps someone's already mentioned it, but I wish Paramount would find a way to bring back Star Trek - Deep Space Nine. It may not have been as popular as the original Trek (or Next Gen), but many fans feel it was the best Trek.

It broke the old Trek formula and blazed its own, challenging, trail by dealing with contemporary issues better than any of the other Treks. In many ways, sadly, the show seems more relevant in today's political climate than when it first aired. DS9 also had the best, most diverse group of characters too.

It ended with a lackluster finale, but it left the door wide open for a return. Too bad the studio's more interested in re-inventing the original Trek instead. Shows like Farscape and Babylon 5 were revived with TV movies/miniseries. Why not DS9? It was more popular than either of those shows. Sisko lives... And long live DS9!

Missy Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

American Dreams, LOVED that show!

stephanie Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this one or not, but I loved Popular. It ended on a major cliffhanger.
Ditto on Reunion and Veronica Mars.

moonshake Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Strange Luck (D.B. Sweeney)
Hamish Macbeth
Point Pleasant

B&DS Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

How about:
The Pretender - never did see the movies that were suppose to wrap up the series
Nikita - anyone remember this from USA before they started reruns?

puma Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

when i was a kid, i loved this show called manimal, i only saw a few episodes but always wanted more. basically, it was about this dude that can turn into animals to solve crimes or whathaveyou.

benjamin barker Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

YO OLD_DUDE jericho is coming back, albeit only slightly. didn't you hear about the NUTS? Now that was an example of people working together and letting their voice be heard. If only it happened more often. And why, god, tell me why in the hell is ER still on the air? How many more cases can they really come up with before the show go into reruns with new faces? Around the time Noah Wyle left. Lets face it, if Noah Wyle thinks he can do better elsewhere, maybe you should take a hint!

Susie Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

I am so glad people have mentioned Dead Like Me. That show was so great and it was just getting started. I miss it :(

Also:
Freaks and Geeks
The O.C.
Reunion - (I'll join the chorus: WHO DID IT?)
and I completely 100% second Supermarket Sweep. It was magic.

TV's the premier medium right now--movies had their heyday back in the 70s, but now with tivo and TV on DVDs, TV is becoming something new and different entirely. Just a shame that we've still got archaic studios in charge of all the money that probably have the worst track record in terms of picking right. Why is ER still on the air, and Deadwood is over?

Sue Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

Firefly
The Class
Jericho
Invasion
Jeremiah
Brisco County Jr.

Good call on The Charmings, I had forgotten that one.

Van Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

The two shows I'd bring back are:

The Kindred - about several modern day clans of vampires (based on the role playing game "Kindred: The Mascarade). The show was a summer replacement series about 10 or 12 years ago and despite a few soap-opera plot lines, it was by far the most intelligent vampire-related series on TV prior to the Buffy and Angel universe.

Wolf Lake - a series about a Northwestern town full of shapeshifters that originally aired on CBS before CBS cancelled it and the remaining episodes were picked up on UPN. Sure, it could be a bit campy and over the top, but it also had a lot of humor (like the 12-step program for recovering shapeshifters).

Jessie Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

I WANT ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT BACK!! And Life as We Know it AND Freaks and Greeks AND Undeclared. Oh, and the Black Donnelly's.

Charlie Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

When I look at my collection of TV on DVD, it makes me realize how much I want more from these shows:

--Arrested Development
--Veronica Mars
--Chappelle's Show (I know it wasn't canceled, but still...)
--Freaks and Geeks
--My So-Called Life (Catalano!)

Gone, but not forgotten.

A Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

Geez, you guys are good! I agree with these picks:

Boomtown -- really good, quality show
Reunion -- I still want to know how it ended, they should put the episodes online
Veronica Mars -- recently canceled, but one of the best shows in the last few years. It's a shame it didn't catch on with viewers...

Antoinette Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:20 AM EST

Someone else said "Homefront" which just disappeared one day and I don't recall there being an actual ending. "Animaniacs" and "Batman The Animated Series". I would also love to have seen more of "MDs" starring John Hannah and William Fichtner. How come every good show with William Fichtner, (hello "Invasion"), gets cancelled? (Except for Prison Break - but that is not what I call a good show.) And "The Mole" was awesome! And "Firefly" too of course but I agree with other posters that now since Wash is dead you really can't bring it back.

linda Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:16 AM EST

Firefly - the only TV show I never saw on the air (came to it through the film, Serenity); Would love, love, love to see more!
Boomtown - fantastic show
Rome - also spectacular
Deadwood - awesome.
All the other shows I'd seen while they were airing - Firefly, though is unique in that its fanbase is growing as people discover the DVDs, watch the series, and are amazed that such a brilliant piece of entertainment was canceled.

paige Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

TWIN PEAKS!!! ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!!! THE COMEBACK!!!

Glenn Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

I agree with you LeapDayBaby, I would love to see the classic soap opera Another World back on TV. It was just regaining its' old form when NBC cancelled it back in 1999. I haven't watched any soap operas since.

Wilson Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

Ok, this is going back a few years, but Fox's show 'Reunion'! It was the one about the six friends, one of whom ends up murdered, and it follows them from 1985 to 2005, in order to figure out who killed who. It only needed ONE SEASON and they canceled halfway through. Still kind of bitter about that one, I don't enjoy not knowing endings.

Oh, and 'Invasion'. I thought 'Invasion' was good too.

Heather Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:05 AM EST

Quantum Leap (yes I realize it had a 'finale', but it never really gave any true closure!)

JillS Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Lucky Louie w/ comedian Louis C.K. Funny and honest blue collar comedy. Reminded me of early "Roseanne".

Don't laugh... Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

There is a show called "Clean Sweep" on TLC that I am watching old re-runs of. Apparently it lasted two seasons and was cancelled years ago, but I am just watching it for the first time and find it to be the utterly enthralling. The premise is: an organizer, a designer, a carpenter, and a bubbly host help a family un-clutter and redesign rooms in their house. I know it sounds about as edgy as sesame street, but I find it completly enchanting and addictive. If they can't bring it back, than they should at least put them on DVD. The show has turned me into a huge Peter Walsh fan, and I use his advice to this day to keep my home and life free of unnecessary clutter.

Anything with Andy Richter playing the title character. And the DVDs are where...?

I'm going to take a minority position here. I don't want any show back. Maybe I am just scared of producers ruining it, but can there be a more fitting end for Firefly than the (SPOILER ALERT - just in case) guy in the suit saying "Well - here I am"? Or for Veronica Mars with that non-ending. Just imagine how many people would have posted The O.C. had Fox pulled the plug after the scripted awesomeness that was season 1. That being said, sometimes I wish there would be a law mandating at least two seasons of preproduction. I would have loved to see more Firefly at the time (maybe not too late for Veronica Mars for a re-pickup of the college timeline - you hear me, CW?), but I doubt a pickup after a few years would meet our expectations, especially if the show progressed into, say, a movie, with show universe affecting discoveries.

My So-Called Life & Carnivale...both were just getting started...and Carnivale ended with so much left up in the air!

Here's my list - three obvious ones, and one that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

1) Arrested Development
2) Futurama
3) Homicide: Life on the Street - but only if they bring back the pre-season 6 cast and not the Four Detectives of the Apocalypse who killed the show (aka Ballard, Falsone, Gharty & Michael Michele's character, whose name I've blocked from my mind for eternity)
4) Another World - yes, it's a soap opera and yes, it was cancelled years ago, but I still miss the good folk of Bay City. I used to get my AW fix on SoapNet until they stopped showing reruns :(

Futurama
Arrested Development

Reunion. That was the show that came on after The O.C about the group of high school friends who came back together because someone in their group was murdered. Who did it?!

FIREFLY of course!

Allison Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 10:20 AM EST

- Arrested Development (of course)
- The Mole
- Stark Raving Mad (with Neil Patrick Harris and Tony Shalhoub - it was so good, and so short-lived)

Firefly and Arrested Development.

Gee, and both shows were on Fox. Why could it be that such great shows get canceled on Fox?

El Franco Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

To all Whedon fans out there who don't know it. There is life after being cancelled and that is comic books. Whedon has already resurrected Buffy, and now Angel, and Firefly again all in comic book format. It might not be the widescreen high definition world we wish to see on TV, but I know Joss wants some way to have his loyal fans to know his great characters live on. So go to your comic book store near you and pick them up! If you don't know where a comic book store is then call the comic book locater service at (1-888-266-4226)to find one near you.
