CBS vs. NBC: Which network will you watch the Patriots (or Tom Brady's butt) on?

Brady_l So NBC and CBS will simulcast the Patriots-Giants game Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET, using the NFL Network's production team (that means Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collinsworth in the booth on all three networks). Apparently, this rare synergy (it's the first NFL game to air on more than one network since the first Super Bowl almost 41 years ago) is huge news for pro football fans. Had it only been broadcast on the NFL Network as originally scheduled, most football fans across the country wouldn't have been able to see the "potentially historic game," in which Tom Brady (pictured) and the Pats try to become the first team to go unbeaten and untied in the regular season since the '72 Dolphins.

Of course, now the question becomes: Which network will you choose? Luckily, I won't have to make that call: I'll be at sports bar in State College, PA., watching Penn State beat Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl on ESPN. But if I had to, I'd go NBC. You?

Susi Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

Crap! I knew I should have called you! I probably could have met up with you:( Where did you go? Champs?

Chris Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 10:01 AM EST

I had never seen the NFLN before, being a Time Warner cable customer. I was interested in how they would handle the game.

Thirty minutes into it, however, I asked my wife if she thought Gumbel was as arrogant and aloof as I did ...

Until they get a better announcer, no NFLN for me.

Jen Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

Beat the h*ll outta Pen State, Whooop!

Gig'em Aggies!

Minutiae Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

I don't really care which network I watch, as long as the Pats lose. Why yes, I'm a Raiders fan who's still bitter about the Snow Bowl. Is it that obvious? ;)

T-Rex Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

Were I going to watch, I'd watch the NBC airing. CBS still broadcasts some games in standard definition and it's an insult to my television. This is their punishment. And once you become the Stetson Man and your mug is immortalized on cardboard in Walmart, you are officially a media whore sellout. Sorry Brady lovers. That isn't to say that Peyton Manning isn't also a sellout. But at least he offers practical advice. For instance, this year I went up to 2XL T-shirts and I'm getting auto body shop quotes for a flame paint job on my mini-van.

kel Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

i could care less about the pats and think this duel network crap is a bunch of bologna. but seeing ew has mentioned my favorite collee team, i couldn't resist commenting.

LET'S GO STATE!!

ABR Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

Brady should 'take a lead from Peyton Manning' in what respect? Blaming his teammates when his team loses a game? Being a complete media whore sellout?
And you think Brady has no class???

Andie Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

First, go Penn State! Hey, BLM, you must be from Pitt. I hear they are so pathetic there, holding on to a one-sided rivalry, that they cheer that no matter who they are playing.

Second, so I guess it's obvious that I won't be watching the Pats-Giants game, but I'm with the Brady haters. He is a total ass. He has no class or personality, he should take a lead from Peyton Manning (and no, I am not a Colts fan). I too hope he gets hurt for the playoffs. They probably shouldn't even play him, but of course they will to guarantee the win, and will leave him in longer than they should so he can break Manning's record, so yeah, I hope he gets hurt b/c they played him chasing glory.

Third, Gumble! My husband HATES listening to him! His favorite example of the countless stupid things Gumble says is calling a play clock a shot clock.

BHM1304 Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 11:51 AM EST

I won't be in Happy Valley but I will be there in spirit cheering on Jo Pa and Penn State as well!!!!

Penn State wins!!! I will have my attention spoken for when boring Bryant is calling the other game. Now the whole world can see what the 10% of us that have the NFL Network see each week - Bryant Gumble is the WORST play by play announcer ever in the history of that role in broadcasting football.

Tiger Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

Don't have NFL Network but saw the Saturday night Bengals game since it was local via the NFL Network. The announcing was terrible - they couldn't get players names or plays right and the graphics were downright laughable. Too bad NBC and CBS can't do their own thing with the game.

GeeMoney Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

Who cares what channel anyone watches it on?

Silv Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 10:59 AM EST

Amen, A! Go Pats!

Ames Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

I don't think I've ever seen Bryant Gumble do color for a game, but I really like Chris Collinsworth. I was wondering where he went. Bryant Gumble doesn't seem to like people very much. I always thought it odd that he went into a business where he had to interact with them constantly.

A Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Bridget Moynahan saw the writing on the wall (that Brady was going to break up with her) so she got pregnant on purpose to try to trap him. Please don't try to cast her as some kind of victim. She brings shame on womankind.

DalGal Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 09:58 AM EST

I guess NBC if they are all airing the same broadcast. I really wish each network could use their own commentators so I won't have to listen to Bryant "I am so much better than everyone" Gumbel. The most arrogant man on TV. The only thing worse would be if it was on ESPN MNF and we had to listen to Tony K! But it is football and I am obsessed so I will watch and hope the Pats lose. But I doubt it. Cowboys & Pats in the SB, Feb '08! Go Boys!

Nix Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 04:26 AM EST

I hear that a lot of the rank-and-file are voting for Crash for Best Picture. /sneaky

Jelana Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 10:28 PM EST

Mandi, the only team you mentioned in that write-up that I don't despise is the Aggies, a team that I have no opinion on whatsoever. So I guess no football for me on Saturday.

DifferentStef Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 10:06 PM EST

Those of you cracking on Tom Brady and the Patriots for whatever reason will be missing out, no matter what happens. It's a historic game featuring one of the best teams ever and one of the best players ever. Name all your weird reasons that have nothing to do with football, you just sound silly because you'll be missing something special.

Kai- Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 09:35 PM EST

It's no contest.... On my cable, NBC is available in HD while CBS is not.

Christina Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

First, GO PENN STATE!!!!!

Second, screw the Patriots and their jerkoff coach and quarterback. I will definitely not be watching.

Tasia Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

Agreed Ceballos... my husband and I cant stand Greg (not Bryant) Gumbel's commentary. At least once a quarter he will call a team by the wrong name and he NEVER acknowledges the mistake! Its so frustrating, so we will probably watch it on CBS, they have the better HD, although I dont like their graphics as much... or their shows... Go Trojans!

tori Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

I am so sick of hearing and seeing Brady and the Patriot, I won't be watching. What I love is how some of the old coachs commentary about how well the Pats would do against the old school Superbowl teams. Its just stupid to compare the old school against the new sissy league that plays now. Old school with old rules would wipe them off the field. It would leave Brady crying like the little girl he is.

Go Giants

Molly Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

The way I heard it, the 1st girlfriend, an older starlet, wanted marriage. He had already broken up with her to date the supermodel. And let's not be hypocrites out there. Those of you who feel he should have married her out of obligation to the child better share that sentiment if it happened to you. No doubt that kid's being taken care of financially.

Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 05:16 PM EST

You mean, Brady left his pregnant supermodel to date a supermodel, don't you?

TSD Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

I will probably watch it on NFL Network. The local networks do a shotty job of airing the games sometimes. I got the NFL Network for games such as this, as long as Eli doesn't suck.

Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:54 PM EST

I hope the Pats lose, just because Tom Brady left his pregnant girlfriend to date a supermodel. Not such a great guy.

Kevin Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:43 PM EST

I really hope the Pats lose and Brady gets injured (not seriously injured, I'm not heartless; just injured enough so that they don't have him for the playoffs). I'm so sick of them. And Tom Brady seems like a complete d*ck (and we all know for a fact that his coach is one).

ROSE Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

It's not the home team, who cares!

Broadway Baby Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

Living in metrowest Boston, our local ABC station had already arranged to air it. I'll be watching it on that station.

Doesn't this remind you though of when you were little and cable was a thing of the future and the dreaded addresses from the President? "The President's on EVERY channel!". My kids hate football Sunday - now it's going to invade their Saturday night - ha ha ha ha ha

Emoney Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

I let my husband buy NFL Network just so he wouldn't miss any "important" games. Now he has to watch this game on NFL Network to justify the purchase -- even if he could watch it on another channel.

laura Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

NFL Network .... it's better

Matty C Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

I am with Mandi all the way on this one!

And for the haters, PENN STATE will win! GO PSU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patty Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

NFL Network - they have the best graphics.

donner Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

I prefer CBS' sports (not necessarily their play-by-play dudes) over NBC sports...the cameras that NBC uses seem to be darker, less crisp than CBS...It all depends on who is in the booth and who makes me craziest first...I'll switch back and forth till I'm comfortable...i bet Brady's butt looks good on my plasma, tho...

Those crazy Aggies, I hope ya'll do well...the Longhorns play tonight, but I'm so disillusioned with them right now, that I don't even care to watch the game...how sad is that...

Andie Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

NBC. That way at least I have a chance of seeing a 30 Rock or Office clip during commercials.

BLM Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

Penn State sucks! P-E-N-N S-T sucks!

Robert Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

I actually get the NFL Network, so I'd be able to watch it there, but I'm going to the game, so.....

Kathy Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

GO AGGIES!!

logan Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

since NBC's HD picture is often subpar, CBS will be my channel for the game.

Jill Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

Probably NBC. We're happy to see this game at all; my husband is from NY and obviously wants to see the Giants play. I'm a Colts fan and want to see the Pats lose. Oh, and I could care less about Tom Brady's butt.

Ball Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

I see you take journalism and football seriously. Tom Brady's butt. Wow! Please be a professional next time.

Ceballos Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

Since I can't avoid the awfulness that is Bryant Gumbel doing play-by-play, I'll watch on NBC thanks to Jen's GREAT call about avoiding "Two and a Half Men" promos (not to mention all the CSI, Cold Case and Without a Trace commercials which look exactly the same).

Still, I might flip over to CBS for their halftime show because NBC has about 23 people too many (none of whom are interesting) and to witness the hilarity of trying to understand what Shannon Sharpe is saying.

Finally, while I'm here and we're talking college footbal...Go Gators!

Houstonian Jen in DC Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

First, I don't know what universe you're in, but in mine, A&M is going to beat Penn State. Go Aggies!

This is a hard decision, but I have to be fair. Since CBS is the home of 'Two and a Half Men', I'll be watching the game on NBC, while hoping against hope that the Giants pull one out. (I'm a sucker for the underdog!)
