Your New Year's (Pop Culture) Resolution

Dec 28, 2007, 06:02 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'America's Next Top Model', Television

Topmodel_l I stopped making New Year's resolutions a few years ago, mainly because I wanted to stop feeling disappointed in myself when I didn't keep them. However, I am willing to make a 2008 pop culture resolution, if you are...

Here goes: I will always at least look to see what's on the Discovery Channel before I watch a movie on Lifetime, WE, Oxygen, or ABC Family; I will always at least look to see what's on the Discovery Channel after each episode in an America's Next Top Model marathon. (I'll miss you most of all, Tyra.)

Your turn.

I've got a top model resolution...although I made it after they kicked off Heather this past season. I just couldn't take any more of the bs! They kicked her off for her inability to connect with people....even though that is the main facet of her autism. They exploited her then kicked her off when her story fissled, she was the best model on the show. I resolve to never watch ANTM again. And with VH-1's model marathon...it's been tough to keep. Thank god for Bravo, Tyson, & Nicki. Please let it be half as good as project runway!

Becky Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Oh and I resolve to give 30 Rock a chance. I'm late to the bandwagon but man, the Christmas episode was so funny.

Becky Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

I will stop reading so much of People.com...especially in regards to Lindsay, Britney, Paris, blah blah blah...I can feel the brain cells dying. Plus, it's none of my business...I need to be praying for them instead of being "concerned" (aka gossipping) about them.

CB Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

I resolve to not get suckered into another season of Grey's Anatomy. I roll my eyes throughout every episode but keep waiting for something good to happen.

CB Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

I resolve to not get suckered into another season of Grey's Anatomy. I roll my eyes throughout every episode but keep waiting for something good to happen.

JoeC Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

I resolve to stop telling people who wallow in the mindless filth known as reality TV (I Love New York, Bachelor, Scott Baio still has no career, Survivor etc) that they are completely wasting their time indulging in such worthless, brainless garbage that is sapping their brainpower with every minute. There! I feel better already!

Snsetblaze Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

I will rent movies less, going instead to the library and getting stuff for free. I will watch everything I have piling up on my tivo and catch up with the stuff my hubby has compiled, expecially Torchwood. I will stop tivoing every single crappy movie that the Sci Fi network runs and watching them, though when I watch them, I can do 12 other things at once since they don't require brain cells.

Unrepentant Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

I vow to continue to watch silly reality shows like The Bachelor, Top Model, and The Hills.
I promise to persist in taping two shows at the same time on my DVR, regardless of how much I truly want to watch them.
I seek to convert others to my television watching ways, making them realize that one can love the good (Friday Night Lights, The Office, Mad Men, 30 Rock) with the bad.

Ray Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

1- Avoid watching any '08 election coverage on Fox "News"; O'Reilly, Hannity, et al are insufferable enough without the Presidential election to make them any more pompous.

2-Continue my boycott of all things "reality" TV (except for "The Soup"'s highlights/recaps/snark every week - it's the only way to stomach this junk, with biting satire)

3-Agree w/Mandi about Discovery Channel...add History Channel to that list as well.

4-Say bye-bye, MTV!

queen of disrepair Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I promise to continue to not subscribe to cable or satellite tv. I promise to support free and public tv.
I promise to not forget to tape Lost, 24 and 30 Rock.
I promise to turn off the tv when I'm reading. Or correcting papers. Or on the computer. I will remember that the tv is an electronic tool not the center of the ambient noise universe.

Cara Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

1. I will absolutely, positively, no matter what's on, NOT watch TV until I have all my classwork done. NO EXCEPTIONS.
2. If I watch TV, I will exercise simultaneously. Even if it's just crunches during commercial breaks, I will counterbalance the deterioration of my brain with the strengthening of my body.
3. I will break my addiction to trash TV. NO "The Bachelor", NO "My Super Sweet Sixteen", ABSOLUTELY NO "Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive". I don't care how funny they are or how much they make me laugh--they're killing me slowly and I won't watch any more of them! I will find quality programs that give me actual pleasure instead of perverse pleasure in mocking them.

Jo Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

*Watch only shows that I like, not ones that I get sucked into (American
*Go to the Landmark Sunshine and Angelika (the major indie theaters in NY) at least once this year
*Drag my friends to more broadway shows - Avenue Q is going to finally happen this year!
*Veronica Mars and Six Feet Under through Netflix
*Give new music a chance even though it sucks

GeeMoney Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

To stop reading all of the garbage posted anywhere about Britney (love the album, but sooooo sick of her personal life) and to give Heroes another chance. Hopefully the third season will be good!

Coach's Mistress Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Holy garbage! So many of you watch MTV and VH1???

My resolutions are:
1. Stop letting my husband chose movies...if I have to sit through another National Treasure brain-killing cr@p film I'm gonna blow!
2. Expand my music horizons...I guess I'll do this by actually reading the Music section of EW.
3. Introduce my kiddos to "classic" movies...they watched "Sound of Music" last night and couldn't turn away.
4. Stop bashin' people who watch MTV (starting now)

C Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

Mine is stop watching I Love New York or anything similar to it. From day one I knew the show was idiotic, full of crap and that it glorified morons. But for some reason, I ALWAYS watch it when it happens to be on. Like a leech it just sucks me in. Maybe I should just refrain from watching VH1 altogether (unless they're playing something like the 'top 100 songs of the 90's'. I'll watch music-oriented stuff like that).

Ames Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

When I am flipping channels and stumble upon stupid celebrity gossip (Britney went to Starbucks!) I will turn the channel much quicker.

drella66 Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

Last year I didnt watch American Idol and I was so happy I didnt. Worst most talentless season ever, I will not allow myself to do so again this year

Catherine Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

No reality shows in 2008. None. I don't care how long the writer's strike lasts. They kill your brain cells.

meg Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:44 AM EST

I think I'm going to give up my People magazine subscription in favor of reading actual books. It pains me to do so but everything that I like out of there is usually on their website and EW keeps me pretty informed on everything else, so I probably won't be missing much.

Emoney Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

ABR -- That was my resolution, too. I was going to be reality-free. Dang Bret Michaels and the Skanks. I can't tear myself away from that!

Michael Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:42 AM EST

2008 will be the year that I most likely try.....but fail completly:
* I promise to stop using adjectives stolen from the mouth of Tyra Banks. I need to stop referring to myself as fierce and others as a brokedown doll
* I will stop crying over the loss of the OC and Veronica Mars. I miss them both sooooo much!
* 2008 will be the year I lose weight, get my teeth fixed, and make a video to be on some form of Reality TV show. I'm looking in your direction Real World: Nebraska
* I will stop yelling during the Amazing Race as if it was a sporting event.
* I will stop mocking Extreme Home Makeover.
* I will stop watching classic TGIF television show like Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Virgie Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:28 AM EST

I resolve to smash the nearest radio whenever Fergie comes on.

To RP Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

I do. I am like a magnet. If there are two other people in the theatre they will sit near me. And because the theatre is not crowded, they think it gives them license to talk out loud. It is strictly home theatre for me unless it is a free preview.

RP Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

I resolve to see at least one independent and/or foreign movie (while in theaters if possible), and one documentary. The documentary I'll get on DVD. The movie theater experience is for entertainment purposes. A Morgan Spurlock film documentary would qualify but that's about it.

@To Donna: Try going to a matinée show after the movie has been out for a few weeks. Less money and fewer people.

ABR Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

My resolution was to stop watching all of those trashy reality shows on VH1. Then I saw that Rock of Love 2 premieres in a couple of weeks. I know I will cave in to the power of Bret Michaels and his gaggle of skanks.

To EM Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:27 AM EST

I did that in 2007!!!!:)

To Donna Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

Please don't go to the movies. Why would you want to spend $9 to sit in front of someone who talks through the movie and kicks your chair too, behind someone who continually bends over to talk to the person next to them, and near someone who talks on their cell phone?

Smoochie Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

I will DVR every episode of 30 Rock and thank Tina Fey for casting Alec Baldwin. Tina and Tracey are great too!!

Nathan Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

I promise to read more books in 2008, the number to beat is 3, shouldn't be too hard. I also plan to boycott all DVDs by Paramount and Universal until they switch to Blu-Ray.

Julie Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

I hereby resolve to watch LESS television and read more books. I am down to three must-see shows (Earl, Office, and Bones) so it shouldn't be too hard. Second, I need to stop _watching_ all those home improvement shows and start actually improving my home. Doable? Yes! Happy New Year everybody!

robin Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

I will quit watching shows just because I can't reach the remote.

Kirsten Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 06:22 PM EST

I will watch all my TV shows I have DVR'd, bought on DVD, videotaped on the VCR on my second TV set. But I will not watch online TV until the strike is settled.
I have kept my resolution from last year not to miss an episode of Criminal Minds or Ugly Betty, so I think I can keep this one, too. The strike forcing new episodes off the air seems to be helping.
I also resolve not to feel guilty about not watching Heroes and Lost, making my friends spend hours trying to convince me to admit myself to the nearest psychiatric hospital. I just don't get it.

Pamela Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

I resolve to:

- Watch only TV shows that actually have some value(entertainment or educational wise, that is) rather than just watch whatever's on. I shall start, just as others have resolved, with ANTM - which I spend most of the time criticising when I am watching it anyway.

- Allocate a set time of day to Popwatch time, so I can get some work down and keep the house clean.

- Watch what I've recorded. If it was good enough to record in the first place, I owe it to myself to watch.

As with all resolutions, I suspect these will last for about a week and a half before I go back to my bad practices of the past.

TanziTwo Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

I resolve to watch and support more quality network programming. Quality entertainment like " J O U R N E Y M A N "

TYRAnnt Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

I live in a rural part of 'flyover state' and my rabbit-earred TV only picks-up a 1/2 dozen (distant) local stations, on a good day. On weekday afternoons at a certain hour, all I get are infomercials, Tyra and TeleTubbies. Guess what? You couldn't pay to me to watch Tyra - even the Tubbies have triple her IQ.

Valerie Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

My resolutions go this way :

- I won't let my DVR pile up, like Matthew. I still have many hours of perfectly good TV to watch from this fall (although it may come in handy with the strike looming closer...)

- I'll watch great TV shows that I never got around to, like Lost, Gilmore Girls and oh, there are too many !

- Go to the movies more, or at least, choose my movies better !

That's about it. I will keep on reading Popwatch, of course !!

Jen Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

I already gave up Project Runway this year, and don't miss it one bit. So I, like Floridaboy, resolve to not watch American Idol until the Hollywood round. I will also get the DVDs to find out what the big deal is about Buffy. I'll probably love it.

Sorry, but I can't promise to give up ANTM, since I know I'll watch it, but I do acknowledge that this means I need help. Maybe the fact that I'm moving in with my boyfriend will shame me out of it. Or maybe I'll get him his own Tivo....

Steph Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 11:31 PM EST

Try with all my might to not get sucked into the new season of Big Brother since I realize that I lose brain cells every time I watch.

Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

i agree.. http://www.yeah.mactanque.com

rachel Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

start watching the office, i know i'll love it like everyone else

catch more reruns of gilmore girls, a great show i never got the chance to watch live

SH Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

1. Stop reading Popwatch when I have homework. (After that, it's all good!)

2. Watch less TV to get homework done. I can sacrifice those two hours where I watch ANTM and Criminal Minds/Private Practice (please don't judge me!)

3. Work more to get a DVR.

jaime Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

Im going to try to actually work at work and not check all my favorite entertainment sites at least once every hour for updates. . .lol ill do it twice when i come in and when i go home!!!

I love POPWATCH. . .BLOG!!!

Em Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

I'm going to boycott MTV entirely, and most of vh1 (except for best week ever, because I can't live without that show)

Laura Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

I mainly have two.

1. Get a DVR. I way watch too much TV to begin with, and need to be able to tape it next year, as I'll have waaaay too much schoolwork. Plus resolution two.
2. Find time to get into shows I always wished I had. I started watching Supernatural online 2 days ago. I plan to also watch Alias, Pushing Daisies, Jerico, The Office, etc. Which makes resolution 1 even more important.

Floridaboy8703 Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Continue to laugh at the demise of the view! Its pretty much dead now.

Only watch American Idol for the hollywood auditions and the top 10. Anything else is just pointless.

Give MTV a chance becuz its featuring a real world house with 5 black housemates.

t3hdow Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

I agree, Ceballos. No matter how bad ANTM gets, I'm still going to watch the marathons when they come around. Still, I don't regret not watching it live anymore (especially after Jericho/Kid Nation came around in Fall 2006/2007 in its time slots).

My Resolutions:
*Indulge in more productive hobbies over TV and videogames
*Watch Discovery Channel and CNN as much as VH1
*Continue to avoid MTV and BET (even if the latter one improved its image a little)
*Catch up with seasons 1 and 2 of Battlestar Galactica before March

Donna Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 10:28 AM EST

1.Boycott MTV once and for all
2.Join Mandi in attemptig to watch the Discovery Channel or anything educational
3.Go to the movies more

Montserrat Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 03:37 AM EST

I kept my 2007 tv new years resolutions to stop watching MTV altogether, I don't know if this just means I'm too old to enjoy it. I also stopped watching network television all together --- which was part of my resoltion, but I cheated through my computer. The tv officially became the HOME of HBO and SHOWTIME and DVD's. While my computers, i have two now, one which became instrumental to streaming ABC.COM and CBS.COM, i don't like the way NBC.com streams its shows so I stopped watching NBC altogether. For 2008, I promise to at least turn the tv on once a day to let it get some exercise.

Jen Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 02:58 AM EST

One of the New Year's resolution that I would like to abide to pop culturally is that until the writer's strike is over to every Thursday at 9 pm watch episodes of The Office to fill in the Jim and Pam void that is in my heart.

Also to fulfill my nostaligia of the my childhood and give American Gladiators (because names such as Fury and Venom are so awesome!).

Matthew Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 12:56 AM EST

See a (good) movie at least ever other week (or every two weeks). And also I agree with the Netflix resolution from Tim. OH, and to not let my DVR pile up. I still have episodes of 'Reaper' and god knows what else from as late as September.

Ceballos Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 12:19 AM EST

I'd like to join the "I'm quitting ANTM" ranks because the judging panels have been a gigantic sham for the most part the past few cycles...

But who am I kidding? I know that I (and probably you guys) am going to catch one of those marathons on MTV one weekend, get sucked in and tune in for the new season just like we always do.

Confidential Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 09:16 PM EST

My tv resolution is to quite MTV... Tila whatever her name is, is the worst show the network has ever done.. I mean really, when did it become Vh1?

Confidential Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 09:14 PM EST

I agree with all the anti-Tyra.. I stopped watch ANTM years ago... The contradicting comments to the girls are just pure crap! And bigger than anything, when was Tyra a supermodel?

Snarf Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

Read Popwatch more often and Give new tv shows a chance before posting some crushing snark filled comment - oh who am I kidding?

Tim Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

My 2008 Pop Culture Resolutions:
- Take full advantage of my Netflix account by taking my queue seriously
- Go to the movies more ...hey, I live in NYC, there's tons of stuff playing!

Tim Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

My 2008 Pop Culture Resolutions:

Lene Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 08:07 PM EST

I don't believe in resolutions, but... Everyone's entitled to a second chance and after Jaslene won, I was willing to give ANTM one more shot. Which they squandered in the most ridiculous season of reality TV I've ever seen (and I've seen many). I hereby resolve that I will never turn on Tyra again. If she won't get off TV, I'll keep her off mine at least.

jay Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 07:05 PM EST

ugh. I'll do away with anything having to do with Tyra Banks in 2008. ANTM is such a scam. everything about the eliminations this season were so wrong. (I'm really not joking. Tyra--you're jank.)
