What movies need the 'Mystery Science Theatre 3000' treatment?

Dec 21, 2007, 07:15 AM | by Joy Piedmont

Categories: Film, I'm Just a Geek, Television

Village_l_2Good news for those of you who crave snarky commentary with your cinematic crapsterpieces. Joel Hodgson, creator, writer, and original host of Mystery Science Theater 3000, is working on a new movie-mocking project called Cinematic Titanic, featuring cast members from MST3K. There's already an official site with more details, but if you're the impatient sort, you can get a similar fix via Rifftrax, where Mike Nelson, another MST3K head writer and onetime host, sells downloads of color commentary on recent heinous titles such as Battlefield Earth and Crossroads.

Anyhow, all this digging around on MST3K got me thinking: Which horrendously awful movies desperately need skewering by Hodgson and/or Nelson? I nominate The Village. Slow pacing, heavy-handed direction, those hooded creatures, and an inscrutable plot make it perfect for a takedown. In fact, any M. Night Shyamalan movie will do just fine. What other titles should we add to the list?

"Wanted." One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Rifftrax recently introduced iRiffs - they instruct you on how to make your own riff of any movie that's available to the general public, send it in, set your price, and the Rifftrax site will set you up with your own product page and your riff will succeed or not based on the customer rating system.

There's an AWFUL movie that's on DVD in Australia that was made here in the states called 'The Dread'. It would be a waste of your life to watch it without commentary.

I like Steven seagal movies, but man would they be hilarious MST-style

Lee Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

Forgot to mention "Legend" the Tom-Cruise-fairy-and-unicorn movie. It's super cheesy, but I can't help myself--I watch it every time it's on cable. If any movie was begging for an MST3K treatment, that one is it

Lee Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 09:49 PM EST

I loooove MST3K! Very fond memories of high school/laughing my @$$ off with my friends and crushing on Joel. I think "Lady in the Water" was worse than "The Village." I nominate "Dogville". I tried, really, really hard to like that movie, but it just bored me to tears. I also nominate "Alice, Sweet Alice." Bad acting, a plot that makes no sense, and a creepy figure in a mask and yellow raincoat--what else do you need? And a great big high five to anyone who has ever sat through the craptastic "Troll 2"

RIfftrax has already done Transformers, Glitter, Independence Day. everyone should check out the websites, you wont be sorry you did. Anyone who loved MST3k will be right at home. Since there are different projects going on now, there are many different ways you can get your movie riffing fix!

www.rifftrax.com and www.cinematictitanic.com

Rifftrax tackles just about anything, they do not focus only
on B-movies anymore:) (the Star Wars prequels are a hoot)

also movie riffers generally as a rule do not do comedies. (there are some exceptions to the rule of course)

birdgirl39 Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 07:25 PM EST

Transformers! Without a doubt one of the worst movies ever. What's more fun than saying snarky things during a commercial?

Jeff Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

I actually liked the Village for some reason... but his latest movie about that sea-woman in the swimming pool (I can't even think of the title because I think I blocked it from my memory) was AWFUL. If anything deserves to be taken down a notch or two, it's that movie!

Stoney Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 10:50 PM EST

"You got Served"
Because nothing screams for MST3K like a dance-off in the hood...with Lil Kim as a judge. Yummy!!

Susan Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 12:01 AM EST

I've heard that "Green Street Hooligans" is quite MST3K-worthy,with its quasi-hooliganish style.

RiffTrax has already done "Eragon",but they MUST MUST MUST do the upcoming "Inkheart"-the cheesy fantasy movie starring Brendan Fraser,Andy Serkis (as a Bald Gollum),and Dame Helen Mirren herself.

"The Forbidden Dance" starring Laura Harring...looong before "Mulholland Drive." Spanish-speaking Amazon Indians! And the tribal matriarch looks like Ellen Burstyn!

"The Boy who loved Trolls",with Sam Waterson as the troll Ofoeti. Has hilarious scene in the beginning in which the prepubescent boy stares longingly at lingerie in a window.

"Yes Giorgio" starring the late great Luciano Pavarotti. Complete with food fight as foreplay scene! And the beautiful Napa Valley gets used!

Finally..I've seen the international trailer for "The Oxford Murders"&I couldn't help but think up snarky comments Mike&the 'bots would say. It's such a bad movie it would turn Oxonian Philip Pullman into a theist.

t3hdow Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

Any of the Tyler Perry movies. I'm all for more movies aimed for black audiences and some of his plays aren't too bad, but his films don't work. It's not a good sign when I laugh more at the serious parts than the humorous ones. Die Hard 4 is also a good candidate, simply because of how ridiculous and over-the-top most of the action scenes look.

I also don't think The Village is really that bad either. If you don't focus on the crappy plot twist in the end, the movie works really well otherwise. As for the review Stephen, it was Mark Harris that wrote it, not Joy Piedmont (this blog's author). One of the biggest pet peeves with EW's reviews in general is the public misconception that one critic's review represents the entire staff, which often proves to be false. It's better to solely see it through the reviewer's perspective than a united opinion from the entire staff of EW writers.

Glitter!

Jenn Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 05:51 PM EST

I feel that every movie could use a little MST3K. I nominate The Sixth Sense...I can just imagine the responses from Joel and the gang after the ever popular "I see dead people" You can also add any Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, as I feel that most 80's horror films are slightly comedic anyway

DrChocolate Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

Spiderman 3, Spiderman 3, Spiderman 3.

I can hear it now - Sandman enters the screen. Mike Nelson says in fake movie announcer voice "Meanwhile in a completely different movie."

suzanne Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:51 PM EST

I love alot of the actors in "Alexander" but the movie was god-awful, it's the only movie I think I've ever shut off mid way through. How about Some Tori Spelling Lifetime movies, those are always laugh worthy!

Erik @ RiffTrax Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

Hi guys, thanks for the comments! Just wanted to point out to some of you who suggested movies that we've already done Independence Day and Troll 2. Check out our catalogue. Thanks everyone and happy riffing!

Kel Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

I miss MST3K so badly I will watch anything they do! When I saw "Batman & Robin" in the theater, I wished I had those bots beside me to make it bearable. Those codpieces! That dialogue! Argh!
Also, any original movie on SciFi Channel would qualify.

Stef Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

Love MST3K! My favorites are either "Mitchell" "Boggy Creek Creature II" (a personal favorite, since I've driven past Boggy Creek) or "Manos: Hands of Fate".

I'd like to see "The Crow" done all MST3K style. And "Gymtaka" about a gymnast trained as a martial arts master on a covert mission - with a competition!

How about Epic Movie? MST3K could actually inject some comedy into that terrible terrible movie.

Meier Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:56 PM EST

See, this is why I like Entertainment Weekly. I've been watching episodes of MST3K on YouTube (mainly the Space Mutiny episode... three times), reminiscing and wanting something this day and age to aim cynicism at the loads of crap that has surfaced over the past decade. It's like you guys spy on me... you're not right outside my window, are you?...

Okay, you're not (this time...). Anyway, to answer your question, the movie that comes immediately to mind is Child's Play 3 (probably because I just wrote a review for it on my blog, calling it "AWFUL!" at least four times). Any eighties teen movie would be ripe for ripping into... How I Got Into College? UHF? Encino Man?... If I had to pick a movie from this year, it'd be Because I Said So.

One last thing: Before my friend moved to L.A., we used to have get-togethers called "Good Beer, Bad Movie Nights." We dissed everything from Barbarella to Cabin Fever all the while sipping on the finest of brews. I recommend GBBMNs - good times.

daisyj Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Jaws 3, and/or Jaws: The Revenge. Because, I mean, damn.

And, not to get all geektastic here or anything, but if you want the classic "horrible old B-movie with snark" treatment, there are also the Film Crew dvds. Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy (the latter two having been the voices of the robots on the original show) riff on "classics" like "Hollywood After Dark" (Rue Mclanahan as a stripper!). I particularly recommend "The Wild Women of Wongo," for obvious reasons.

Stephen Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:34 PM EST

Not to be a defender of "The Village" as I hated the ending, but I just read EW's review, a B-. Usually a B- does not a terrible movie make.

Hippie2MARS Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

Oh, how I'd love to see them take on "The Chronicles of Riddick"! My son turned to me after the immortal line, "You know that game we used to play...who's the best killer? Let's play that now." and uttered a line worth of MST3K..."You know that game we used to play...who's the worst actor? Let's play that now". I laughed so hard my other son got mad and left us sitting there. That movie is just BEGGING to be made fun of!

GingerCat Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

Anyone here remember the Rick Springfield vehicle "Hard to Hold"? I had very low moviegoing standards at age 12, but even I still found much to mock. Imagine what MST3K would come up with.
Also, I actually liked "Because I Said So" because I like all the actresses in it, but I still want to see what the MST3K guys would say about what Diane Keaton was put through in that movie.

BF Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

I would give the MST3000 treatment to the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The whole movie is mainly an homage to Jessica Biel's breasts.

Dana Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

I thought The Village was a very good movie of all the other crappy films out there you pick that? It may not have been the best movie ever made but the cinematography and acting were both great. How about The Mist, The Cave, I know Who Killed Me, The Wicker Man, I could go on and on............

tad Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

I'd love to see what the boys would do with Catwoman!! That movie was so terrible that I think Halle Berry should have to give back her Oscar for appearing in it. Also, Aeon Flux would be fun but how about Bug. That was a terrible movie that they could have great fun with!!

FunkyRedrum Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

I must agree, first, that Ghost Rider would be the perfect addition to MST3K.

However, in the tradition of MST3K, I have selected a b-move of mammoth proportions: Curse of the Komodo. This one screams for the MST3K treatment: it stars porn stars, the characters are completely stupid (ie this is not working so let's continue to do it for the next 1/2 hour), clothes that don't fit, and completely moronic nudity (hey, we are by a lake, let's all get naked and splash around).

Beth Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

How about Crossroads, Britney's gem? I had a fantastic evening one night with a group of friends and that movie. Looking at the new official site, I see no signs of Crow and Tom Servo. Is it bad that I want my movie mocking delivered by robots that I know and love?

Kevin Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

BOOO-hiss! The Village, though not a great movie, is not a bad movie by a long shot. The problem is that there is a gimmick...you knew it going in and most people figured it out within 15 minutes because of it (I figured it out from the trailer...I was hoping I was wrong; I wasn't). But the movie is very successful in its use of atmosphere and tension...it has become a perennial Halloween-time favorite for me because of that reason. If it wasn't for the bad "twist" at the end and the terrible Adrien Brody character/storyline, the movie would have been really good. That said, Shyamalan needs to stop writing his own scripts. I also disagree with Solaris as a suggestion and Interview with a Vampire is AWESOME (just poorly cast...and the ending was terrible; not down with G n' R doing the Stones). I agree with EL, Transformers is AWFUL! Titanic is fun too because the script is SO bad.

fernt Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

TROLL 2

If you haven't experienced Troll 2, do yourself a favor and buy it. It's worth every penny. Don't think twice, buy it.

I'm disappointed Dalton Ross hasn't commented on it.

Oh yeah...Godzilla with Mathew Broadrick...and the Producers would be fun

Joey Jo Jo Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Superman Returns. I don't know which was more laughable: Kate Bosworth's performance as Lois Lane or the poorly written script. Plus Brandon Routh was such a sad sack of a Superman.

Jane Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:28 PM EST

Anything Woody Allen. He sucks.

Ames Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:23 PM EST

I vote for "Independence Day." I saw it opening night in a full theater, and I'm pretty sure we angered a lot of people b/c me and a friend could not stop laughing and making jokes. The funniest thing was the amount of people that thought it was a good movie!

nancy Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

I am sure this makes me a bad, bad person but "The Good Shepard" was a borefeast - I couldn't believe it b/c the cast was full of greatness but it couldn't end fast enough . .speaking of which, nearly 3 hours??? Come On!

Brad Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

While I agree on a lot of these being terrible titles, it wouldn't matter to me if they did a MST3K on them, because I just couldn't bear to sit through films like The Village or The Brown Bunny ever again for any reason. But as far as a bad movie I knew was going to be a bad movie, and got it strictly because I needed a distraction after watching a string of Bergman films, I think "Black Sheep" would be a great one. It's ridiculous, silly, and over the top, but I could watch again if drunk.

mark in nyc Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

I think both Matrix sequels would be perfect for them. especially anything said by Morpheus.

Lindsey Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Ghost Rider!!! A thousand times Ghost Rider!!

I haven't laughed at something so unintentionally funny in a very long time.
And does anybody remember the movie "Thinner"? That deserves it, too!

Cara Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:50 AM EST

One night my friend and I were so mind-numbingly bored that we decided to go see a $1 showing of "Aquamarine". It actually turned out to be one of the most fun movies of my life--we spent the entire time mocking everything onscreen, and since we were in a theater full of teenagers, everyone else did as well. It was like a "Rocky Horror" showing, it was a blast. I fully recommend that movie for all your snarking needs.

KingLouieXVIII Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Why the constant M. Night Shyamalan bashing at EW--especially when it comes to THE VILLAGE? I'm beginning to think they have a much deeper personal issue against him. The movie is not as bad as many of you make it out to be. Granted it is slow-paced and I understand why many have problems with the improbabilities of the story. BUT IT'S A FREAKIN' MOVIE. At one point or another, most movies demand that you suspend disbelief. MNS's direction is great, the cinematography is outstanding, and the movie features great performances from Bryce Dallas Howard, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, and the greatly underrated Joaquin Phoenix. You people need to chill. If you want to attack Hollywood films, begin with anything made by the Wayans' Brothers.

Puck Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

I vote for Underdog and Alvin & The Chipmunks. I haven't seen either, and never plan on doing so, since they both looked so bad and ruined classic cartoon characters. Perfect for Mike & the bots.
P.S. Jason Lee needs to have these movies erased from his resume and go back to doing Kevin Smith movies!

Kit-Sung Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

If you find "The Village" inscrutable maybe something is wrong with your brain.

Steve Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

Personally I'd vote for The Omen. OhMyGod. Love that movie. It is so cheesalicious.

Nick Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Beverly Hills Cop III. I know nobody remembers it, but it's outright drek, with some of the worst gaffes I've ever witnessed in the movie theater.

Nick Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Beverly Hills Cop III. I know nobody remembers it, but it's outright drek, with some of the worst gaffes I've ever witnessed in the movie theater.

Lauren Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

Southland Tales. There were actually a lot of good things about the movie (the acting was fantastic for the most part), but all the conspiracy theories and the trainwreck plot are just BEGGING for the MST treatment.

BayAreaDM Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

All the lame modern movies, and you guys pick M. Night Shyamalan? Solaris? Please. The Day After Tomorrow, Van Helsing, Ultraviolet, Wicker Man, and the second and third Resident Evil movies are ripe.

AH Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

I think that the Hillary Duff, etc genre is actually so easy to make fun of as to make any show about it superfluous. Though my friends and I had a fabulous time mocking The Prince and Me. "If that butterfly winds up back at her college..."

Tuzo Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

Good call on Solaris...although it might be hard to mock because *nothing happens*! Highlander 2 is always at the top of my list for these kind of things although practically it may be too much of a genre film that depends on the original. That said, it's probably incomprehensible either way.

ns Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

The Wicker Man was pretty terrible. Now that I think about it, they could probably devote a whole season just to Nicolas Cage films.

I'm gay for Tina Fey Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:59 AM EST

If we're making fun of movies that earnestly wanted to be good but failed, then you have to go with The ULTIMATE reigning all-time king poo-bah of the "sh**-pretending-to-be-art" genre, The Brown Bunny. Just thinking about that movie makes me want to punch someone in the face.

EL Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

I know most of you wont agree with this but my vote is for Transformers. My friend and I started our own smartass commentary after about 10 minutes when we realized it was terrible.

Good call on M Night. Among a sea of possibilities, you could troll his practically his whole body of work for ideas. While The Village certainly works, I would nominate Lady in the Water even higher. Holy cow, blazingly awful movie parading as art; let the MST3K guys go at it.

birdgirl39 Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

Both "Interview with a Vampire" and "Queen of the Damned" beg to be made fun of. I laughed my ass off during both.

Nick Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - the Movie

Robert Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

I'd love to see those guys tackle some of the terrible "teen" flicks that have come out recently - anything starring Amanda Bynes or Hilary Duff. I'm just imagining the brilliance during "She's The Man".

SpaceCat85 Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

Good call on The Village. They could have a field day with the hokey pseudo-historic accents alone.

My pick would be one of those bad "chicks with guns" action/wannabe video game flicks: either Underworld or Ultraviolet. The latter is so strangely cheap, bad, & nonsensical it's trippy to watch, but Underworld probably needs some MST3K commentary more. That perpetually blue-lit scenery must have tasted pretty good, because a few of the actors were certainly chewing great chunks of it ;)

KG Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:47 AM EST

People will disagree with me but when all the hoopla dies down, I will turn out to be right..."I am Legend" was so full of itself and pointless by the end, I would gladly sit in a theater with smart ass robots any day.

JC Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:28 AM EST

I love RiffTrax. We've spent a fair amount of dough there. I actually went out and bought a couple of DVDs because I wanted to hear the RiffTrax for them, and my rental store didn't have them. RiffTrax made the Matrix bearable again.

Cinderella Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:21 AM EST

One movie that should get this treatment is Boxing Helena (soooo bad!). I think they'd have a field day with that. For a more recent film, I'd like to see them take on Running With Scissors and bring it down a peg or two.

bb Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:51 AM EST

Blair Witch Project, maybe then I'd understand it.

Lauren Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:43 AM EST

I've always wished Maximum Overdrive, the Stephen King adaptation starring Emilio Estevez would be perfect fodder for MST3K.

There are so many skewer-able moments. At one point two guys are crawling through a sewer and discuss its terrible smell at length. And of course there's the classic "Me made you! We maaaade yoooou!" scene. Good stuff.

tia Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:28 AM EST

The Day After Tomorrow. So much material to laugh at, my friends and I went twice. The first time was to actually see the movie, the second time was to unload all of our pent-up snark in 90 min (no one else was there, so we didn't annoy anyone but each other.) MST3K would do an awesome job with this movie.

Hamburger Royal Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:51 AM EST

I nominate The Hottest State. The premise of the film wasn't that aweful, but the whiny lead actor stalking his lost love was so overblown, it was't even funny, so to speak. It doesn't happen often watching movies, but I desparately wished the protagonist would show some cojones and just kill himself about halfway through.

Stephen Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:45 AM EST

"Solaris" with George Clooney. I wanted to walk out desperately, but stayed because I kept telling myself it ad such big names behind it, it had to end brilliantly. I was wrong.

Shannon Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:40 AM EST

I nominate "The Mist". That movie was terrible, and may have had some of the worst characters I've seen in a movie in a long time. Talk about rooting for the monsters!! EAT!EAT!EAT!

Chris G Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:32 AM EST

I Know Who Killed Me!!! That movie sucked so much, it bordered on brilliance!
