The best (and worst) songs from movies

Dec 6, 2007, 03:00 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Film, Music

Ll_l On Friday night, CBS will celebrate the "powerful relationship between music and film" with the new two-hour concert special, Movies Rock. Performers include:

  • will.i.am, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J (pictured), and Eve (singing a "Shaft" compilation, from the movie Shaft)
  • Fergie ("Live and Let Die," from Live and Let Die)
  • Beyoncé ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow," from The Wizard of Oz)
Jennifer Hudson ("Somewhere," from West Side Story)
  • Mary J. Blige and John Legend ("As Time Goes By," from Casablanca)
  • Nicole Scherzinger ("Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes)
  • Chris Brown ("Jailhouse Rock," from Jailhouse Rock)
  • Carrie Underwood ("The Sound of Music," from The Sound of Music)
  • Usher ("Singin' in the Rain," from Singin' in the Rain)
  • Queen Latifah ("Big Spender," from Sweet Charity)
  • Marc Anthony ("Mrs. Robinson," from The Graduate)
  • Tony Bennett ("White Christmas," from Holiday Inn)
  • Elton John ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight," from The Lion King)
  • Composer John Williams performing a film-score compilation

Are these the tracks that have touched you the most? What are your favorite movie tunes — for better or worse? (See my pick for the latter after the jump.)

Just watched the show a few hours ago on the DVR. I liked John Legend but Mary J. Blige was not right for "As Time Goes By"; they should have let Legend do it solo. Having never seen Usher perform (at least I don't think so), I thought he did a fantastic job with one of my all-time favorite numbers. Chris Brown was great, too. I can't believe they forgot "Fame", "Dirty Dancing" and so many other songs/dance numbers - too many commercials. Also, where did they get their researchers? "Saturday Night Fever" was released in 1977 NOT 1983 as noted.

monica2 Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 09:45 PM EST

"i'll always love you" bodyguard
"There Are Worse Things I Could Do" Grease

monica Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 05:01 PM EST

i actually nominate "Part of your world" from the little mermaid, "circle of life" from the lion king, and "when you're good to mama" from chicago.

DC Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 10:08 PM EST

OK, this is off topic, but does anyone know how to find the suit that Usher wore on this show during his performance? Maybe it's not one of a kind? It's incredible.

Vince Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

I totally disagree with whoever thought "Flash's Theme" from "Flash Gordon" was one of the worst movie songs ever.

Queen+ Synthesizers= awesome.

marvin3O Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

on the other hand, "When you believe" is definitelly one of the best songs written for a movie. It is very powerful, the lyrics represents the movie, and the battle of both divas gives me the chills every time.

marvin3O Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

Although the song itself is good (cheesy, but good), How do I live did not fit at all into Con Air. The contrast between the totally chick song and the badass movie is not a great combination

jason Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

i saw the show and it was actually NOT bad. fergie actually did ok. and can i say carrie u. was good and nicole from the pussycat dolls BLEW ME AWAY!! she can actually sing REALLY well. the dancing was good too. of course my favorite was jennifer hudson. that girl rocks my world, can't wait for the CD. clive better do right by her!!

Sina Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 09:56 AM EST

Mine are and should have been done:

Look into your heart--From Sparkle

What a feeling

Girl you'll be a woman soon from Pulp Fiction

MrMcGee Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 11:15 PM EST

Other Good ones:
Streets of Philadelphia (Bruce)
That Michael Jackson song from Free Willy
Lose Yourself
Patience from Dreamgirls
Back to School, Reproduction, and Let's Bowl from Grease 2 (what?)

Steven Cuk Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 09:46 PM EST

From "The Italian Job",

"Get a Bloody Move On".

Snarf Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

What? No "My Heart Will Go On?" I am shocked and apalled.

Sarah Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 05:08 PM EST

Anything from the Rocky Horror Picture Show would have been awesome to see performed.

s Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Glory of Love, theme from Karate Kid Part 2.

s Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Glory of Love, theme from Karate Kid Part 2.

LisaMama Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

My husband and I like the Queen songs from the Highlander sound track. Queen rocks.
My kids love the Mary Poppins soundtrack, especially the Chimney sweep song, and they also love Bear Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You from Jungle Book.

Music Man Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

Michael, get better taste in music.

Suzanne Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

okay I guess this is where RAP jumped the shark.

Alan Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:50 PM EST

I like Mary J, but matching her with John Legend is a poor decision. Her voice is too rough for As Time Goes By--Queen Latifah would've been a better choice.

Michael Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

Beyonce will oversing (as usual) and massacre "Over The Rainbow." Nicole Sherzinger isn't NEARLY as breathy a singer nor as sexy a woman to pull off "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend." Fergie will ROCK "Live and Let Die!" SO looking forward to this!

Dinosaur Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

Worst: "Men In Black" by Will Smith. Crap. Just crap.

jusgorjus Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

I just watched that video, and WOW! It is amazingly, horrifyingly bad. Did someone not listen before releasing this?

TDJ Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

"Somewhere Out There" from An American Tale.

drella66 Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

They are great choices for songs but horrible for acts...I mean really, will i am, Fergie, the chick from the Pussycat Dolls...I would rather watch a children's christmas pagent...

DalGal Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 10:22 AM EST

Here is a great one that no one has mentioned (or maybe they never saw it). Andy Williams's "Happy Heart" used at the finale of Shallow Grave. Great movie and great song which really wrapped up the film nicely!

Nix Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 07:50 AM EST

Doesn't make my ears hurt, but the obvious hip-hop/RB slant, with the prerequisite "country" (rock with twang) and geezer pop (old gay geezer pop, Elton singing not his best song), reminds me there's nothing for me to listen to in popular music anymore. Here's to those small clubs and backwoods festivals.

I think Blige is pretty inspiring right now but isn't she a belter? How can she belt "As Time Goes By?" Wouldn't Dana Owens be a better choice to duet with?

Pede Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 02:48 AM EST

Umm, "In Your Eyes" - the song totally brings back the memory of John Cusack standing in the rain with the boombox in Say Anything.

Snsetblaze Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 02:24 AM EST

The Rainbow Connection from The Muppet Movie, Supercalafragalistic-expealidoscious (spelling?) from Mary Poppins, You Could Be Mine - one of the Terminator movies.

I like the James Bond tribute idea as well and including the Saturday Night Fever sountrack.

And since its airing on Friday, how about "Thank God Its Friday" from the movie of the same name. Kidding.

BinkyM Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:51 AM EST

That list makes me simultaneously vomit and make brown squishy stuff in my panties. Best all-time movie song: "Uncle Fucka" from "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut."

jay Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 12:24 AM EST

Aimee Mann's "Save Me" off of the Magnolia soundtrack compliments the movie and stands on its own like I've never seen before. The whole Magnolia Soundtrack is astounding.

Fatima Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 12:04 AM EST

I'm excited for this. Especially Mary and John Legend doing As Time Goes By. And based off the commercial snippet, I will love Beyonce's version. Chris Brown is a great entertainer. I kinda like that there is an obvious R&B slant here. I guess that makes some reader's "ears hurt" but whatever, there are some talented artists in there.

Matthew Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

Praise the lord for no "My Heart Will Go On"/Titanic medley.
"Moon River" is definitely one of my all time favorites. Also some of the songs featured in "Music & Lyrics" were pretty good.
And I can't believe ANYTHING fron "Saturday Night Fever" has not been included in the line-up! I could totally see someone such as Chris Brown or Justin Timberlake popping out in a white suit and performing that. But preferrably Chris Brown. For anyone who's seen the VMAS, you'll know why. He saved that show from being a [complete.] disaster.

tia Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:52 PM EST

Worst song- She's like the Wind (Dirty Dancing)
Best Song- A Kiss at the end of the Rainbow (A Mighty Wind)

anonymous Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:45 PM EST

Anything and everything written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman during the Disney Renaissance is perfect.

Music Man Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Also for the best:
Everybody Needs Somebody - Blues Brothers
Tiny Dancer (Elton John) - Almost Famous

Music Man Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:35 PM EST

BEST
Skid Row - Little Shop of Horrors
Beezleboss - The Pick of Destiny
Pinball Wizard - Tommy
Better Off Dead song - Better Off Dead
Let's Get It On - High Fidelity
Panama (Van Halen) - Superbad
Hurricane (Dylan) - Dazed and Confused
Lust for Life (Iggy Pop) - Trainspotting

WORST
Anything else

beb Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

"Take My Breath Away" Berlin (from Top Gun)

Not sure who should do it, though? DEFINITELY not Celine Dion (have you heard her messy remake of Heart's "Alone"? Maybe Leona Lewis...her CD will be out in the U.S. soon...

teekay Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 06:58 PM EST

Hmmm... I love me some show tunes, but am wondering if it's fair to celebrate music from broadway shows adapted to film as "movie" music. Anyway, the first thing I thought of was the entire Magnolia soundtrack.

Angelina Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 06:05 PM EST

My absolute favorite song is Henry Mancini's "Moon River" from Breakfast At Tiffanys.

Tkgeisha Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 06:01 PM EST

Does it have to be written for the movie or can it be an existing song put on the soundtrack?

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" always adds a deep melancholy to the many movies (and TV shows) that it has played on.

Worst Song? No contest!

"MacArthur Park"

"Someone left a cake out in the rain"????????????

RobVanWinkle Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

Anything from "Cool As Ice" gets my blood pumpin'!!!

Ames Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Does reading the list of performers and songs make anyone else's ears hurt?

D. Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

Oh man, totally agree AA. A collection of Bond songs on a program like this? AWESOME.

And I'm sorry - but Nicole Scerzinger needs to go away...like now.

peach Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

Some of my favs that they didn't include:
"What a Feeling" from Flashdance
"Hopelessly Devoted" from Grease
"Hard Candy Christmas"from Dolly Parton
and shamefully "Almost Paradise" from Footloose.

Bennie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:47 PM EST

Ok songs but fairly predictable. They need to perform songs that are not overrated like "Put the blame on mame" from "Gilda" or "People" from "Funny girl" or one of my favorites now : "Belleville Rendevouz" from the french animated movie "The triplets of Belleville". but I know fat chance.

skye Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:44 PM EST

Elton Jonh? K, he wrote it. I will tune in for THAT. Everybopdy else....Um, can we switch it around? like NOT having Chris Brown sing Jailhouse Rock? come ON ppl...

DCR Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

The name of the show is Movies Rock, but I don't see any rock performances on that list.

Cara Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

Well, they're spot on with "As Time Goes By"--that's one of my favorites. Also, "Come What May" from "Moulin Rouge", "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from "Hustle and Flow", "Moon River" from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and...er..."If We Hold On Together" from "Land Before Time".

...I can't help it.

Christa Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

Wow. I never knew that song (or video) existed. I wish that I still didn't.

AA Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

It'd be interesting to see all the James Bond songs given a tribute.

Jill Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

Well I can't imagine Elton John's song will be too hard for him.

Anyhow, my favorite movie songs are "Don't You Forget About Me" from The Breakfast Club and "Hungry Eyes" from Dirty Dancing.

My least favorite is "Die Another Day" from movie of the same name sung by Madonna. Horrible.

Rachel K Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Ok, while I cannot stand this song, the theme song from Titanic is seriously one of the most recognized songs from film. How it's not on there is beyond me. However, I'm stoked to see John Williams gets a nod because his scores are amazing.

Stephanie T. Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

Worst:

Wind Beneath My Wings-Beaches
My Heart Will Go On-Titanic
Beacuse You Loved Me-Up Close and Personal
Don't Want to Miss a Thing-Armaggedon
I will Always Love You-The Bodyguard

Best

I Will Always Love You- Dolly Parton Ad-On-Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

Dueling Banjos-Deliverance

I'm Alright-CaddyShack

Rock and Roll High School- Rock And Roll High School

Would?- Singles

Until I hear it From You-Empire Records

Flash Gordon Theme-Flash Gordon

It was Probably Me- Leathal Weapon 3

CandyCurtis Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

Favourite Songs:
-"Calling You"(Out of Rosenheim)
-"A Love that will never grow Old ( Brokeback Mountain )
-"Run to You ( The Bodyguard )
-"On my Own" ( Fame )

Jelana Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

Thad: nice selections. I nominate Sebastian's (the CRAB) "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid. Also, anything adapted from Broadway doesn't seem fair.

cruzilla Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

I know hardly anyone saw this, but Nick Drake's "Road" is intermeshed beautifully into Hideous Kinky.

Thad Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

No one has fun songs in fims anymore. Give me:

Straight And Nappy - Skool Daze
Danger Zone - Top Gun
Maniac - Flashdance
I'm Alight - Caddyshack
Holiday Road - Vacation

jason Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

although it was a musical first, and it's new, "i know where i've been" from "hairspray" is one of my favorite movie songs ever, and of course, the main title theme to "star wars"

Kraig Rasool Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

Ther are quite a few songs that really get me...hoewever "Cutchie Face from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and
"Music Box" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and another childhood favorite
"I wanna be like you" from the Jungle Book..I hope Beyonce doesnt try to imitate Patti Labelle's version of Over the Rainbow.....Just how bout Not!!

Tyler D Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

Just based on that list of, I'm certain these performances are sure to loud, shrill, excessive, exaggerated, and hysterical, without any restraint. Will any of these perfomances actually be about the songs themselves or is it more likely that the performers are going to demand that we give them all of our attention?

Shannon Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

Best song-- "Don't you forget about me" from the breakfast Club.
Worst Song (in retrospect)--Wind Beneath My Wings" from Beaches

Usagi Yojimbo Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from Say Anything or Miss Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds Are Forever"

Lauren Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

I also hope Jennifer Hudson doesn't overdo Somewhere. That's one of my very favorite movie songs (I've also been in the stage version of West Side Story) because it's very quiet and moving.

Personally, I loved Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" as played over the closing credits of The History Boys.

And for some reason, "At the Beginning" from Anastasia always gets to me.

paige Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

when did LL start morphing into a shark? and when did he start waxing???

stephen Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

Marc Anthony and the pussycat doll just seem wrong choices for those songs. I love Beyonce but I hope she doesn't shout the song.
