Who were the biggest unsung heroes of TV in 2007?

Dec 5, 2007, 05:37 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Television

Overlooked_l I know we've been talking about best-of and worst-of lists for the last couple weeks -- the end of the year is always like that for all of us pop-culture hounds. But I was watching a backlogged episode of NBC's sloppily written (and shoddily assembled) Bionic Woman the other night, and out of nowhere, Molly Price (pictured, left right, as Berkut Group psychiatrist Ruth) busted out a perfectly timed, hilarious zinger about how she'd once slept with Isaiah Washington's late, not-so-great Antonio. If there's anyone left on the planet still watching this show, isn't Price priceless each week in her few minutes of screen time? Also, am I the only person who just realized she's the same actress who starred on NBC's Third Watch several seasons back? It took an IMDb check this afternoon before I came to this realization. Either way, get this woman her own series, pronto!

Similarly, while FX's Damages got a lot of buzz this summer for Glenn Close's riveting star turn, and Ted Danson's dark, brilliant support, I felt like Zeljko Ivanek (pictured, left), playing conflicted, sexually ambiguous attorney Ray Fiske, was every bit as good (if not a fraction of a millimeter better) than his bold-faced co-stars. I sure hope Emmy doesn’t forget him when it comes time to hand out nominations.

So in the spirit of these two praise-starved thespians, let's start a list here that probably won't be found anywhere else, anytime soon: Who were the biggest unsung heroes of TV in 2007?

Demetri Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 06:51 AM EST

Connie Britton in Friday Night Lights, Ray Wise in Reaper, Creed Bratton in The Office, Kevin Brown and Grizz Chapman in 30 Rock.

margie Sun, Dec 16, 2007 at 05:48 PM EST

definitely adam baldwin! also, i am watching a 30 Rock marathon this weekend and the guy who plays "Kenneth the Page" is one of the hidden gems of that show.

susie Sun, Dec 9, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Adam Baldwin on Chuck. That man can do more with a reaction shot than any other actor on tv.

margie Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

Molly Price is great on Bionic Woman, and and Ray Wise is a delicious devil on Reaper (although Sam's friend Sock and his earnest counterpart in crime make the show).
Also, the supporting cast of October Road deserves a nod because the leads are boring as hell, but Brad Henke makes a 100 percent commitment to every expression of his character Owan Rowan and Geoff Stults and Rebecca Field are great as the hot dude and the fat chick he can't help but fall for ... I had to look up their names to type that, and trust me their scenes are actually good.
Kristin Chenowith is amazing as always in Pushing Daisies, and Tahmoh Penikett brings a human passion to the Cylon v Human divide in Battlestar Galactica. Nathan Fillion does more with a facial twitch on Desperate Housewives than all of the other husbands combined, while the woman who plays Karen Darling on Dirty Sexy Money does not get enough credit for her boozy sturdiness on that show.

Mab Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 10:32 PM EST

The supporting cast of detectives of the Closer: Yes, Kyra Sedgewick is delivers a great performance time after time, but Brenda wouldn't be the same if she didn't have her detectives around her. They compliment her tremendously and gives us a show that is sharp, funny and a joy to watch.

DalGal Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

Jane Krakowski on 30 Rock, James Morrison on 24, Creed and Stanley on the Office, CRABMAN (who doesn't love him) and now Glenn Fitzgerald (Brian) on DSM!

EAP Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:53 PM EST

-Tichina Arnold on "Everybody Hates Chris" is hilarious!!

EAP Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:52 PM EST

-Chi McBride as Emerson on "Pushing Daisies"
-Henry Ian Cusick and Elizabeth Mitchell from LOST, anyone who watched "Flashes Before Your Eyes" and "One Of Us" will know what I'm talking about
-Jennifer Esposito on "Samantha Who?" is amazing
- The whole cast from VERONICA MARS (Kristen Bell included). Since its first season they gave us top-notched performances. Enrico Colantony, Percy Daggs, Francis Capra, Kyle Gallner, Ryan Hansen.

Amanda Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:47 PM EST

I agree wholeheartedly about Ivanek. Loved him on Broadway in "The Pillowman" and "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial." I couldn't stop thinking about his performance on "Damages" for days after his last episode.

j Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:36 PM EST

Another vote for Ethan Suplee on My Name is Earl.
Robert Iler who played AJ on the Sopranos.
Friday Night Lights cast is great esp Connie Britton (Tami) and Taylor Kitsch (Riggins).
And finally, I love Maria Lark (Bridgette) on Medium.

beachmom Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:30 PM EST

the entire cast of 'friday night lights' but especially coach, mrs. coach, riggins, street, and matt. so perfect and so shockingly not raved about!!!

JT Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Browsie on The Amazing Race. (Josh Wolk you have ruined me!)

Christina Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:32 PM EST

Robert Sean Leonard (House) - For me, rating a House episode is pretty easy: great if RSL as Wilson is in it a lot, not so great if he's only in one scene.
Becki Newton and Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) - So hilarious
Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters)
Chloe Sevigny (Big Love)
Gareth David-Lloyd (Torchwood)
Pretty much the whole cast of Friday Night Lights
Oh..and did I mention Robert Sean Leonard?

B. Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

Ethan Suplee 'My Name Is Earl'
Kristin Chenowith 'Pushing Daisies'
Micheal Rosenbaum 'Smallville'
Jack Coleman 'Heroes'

Those four get my vote for most underrated in TV.

Mary Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

Lauren Graham (I suppose she's gotten critical acclaim but the lack of Emmy nominations still annoys...)
Eric Mabius (Similar reasons everyone has mentioned)
John Krasinski (Love)

Neffs Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

We've been over why this Emmy omission is criminal, but for all the adult talent on The Wire, how about that incredible crowd of kids?

Frank Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

Marcia Cross. Why hasn't she won yet? It makes no sense.

Lauren Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

Agree wholeheartedly re: Kyle Chandler and Smash's mom on FNL.

You could teach an entire acting class based only on their scene in Coach's office a couple of weeks back, with her saying almost every line and him mainly listening. Gave me goosebumps.

Andie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

The Justin and Raja on Aliens in America. They crack me up and have a sweet/realistic relationship.

Laurie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Željko Ivanek is definitely my pick for the year. I've admired his work since Homicide, perhaps earlier than that, even, but I had no idea just how good he could be until I saw his scenes with Glenn Close on Damages. Utterly riveting, the two of them together. I couldn't look away.

marc Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

Michael Urie ("Betty"), Chi McBride ("Daisies"). I laugh whenever they open their mouth, grimace, basically just show up on screen. Also a special nod to Ally Walker ("Tell Me") who broke my heart whenever she was on screen.

Yolanda Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

(1) The entire cast of "Dirty Sexy Money," which should be a bigger hit than it is. (2) Ana Ortiz as Hilda on "Ugly Betty" -- a less flashy role but one she embodies perfectly. (3) Kevin Weisman on "Moonlight," who is the best thing about that show!

WH Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

Keiko Agena for Gilmore Girls-she brought Lane to life. While we're at it, Melissa McCarthy and Jennifer Esposito for Samatha Who? And I love Ed Herrmann for both Gilmore Girls and Grey's.

Dillon Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Becki Newton all the way! Vanessa and America get all the buzz, but Becki is the reason I watch the show. I'm glad they gaver her "Milkshake" cause that showed people just how amazing she is. However, she has been that amazing from the beginning. Everything about her is amazing from her comedic timing, facial expressions, the hand she rocks on her hip, and the roll of her neck. I am soo ready to find out who her dad is!

Dillon Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Celimene Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

Zeljko Ivanek is, and always will be, the man. I first noticed him as a guest star on the X-Files years ago, and he's continued to be quietly stellar. For me, he also stands out in the great "Dogville". (Yes, I'm a Von Trier fan) Ivanek also shines onstage - for my money, he was the best part of the brilliant production of "The Pillowman" on Broadway a few years ago. All hail the man!

adam Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Peter Macnicol was the best thing about a subpar year of 24, but the always underappreciated James Morrison (Bill Buchanan) is rock solid, every week.

On Galactica, I feel like Jamie Bamber had a pretty great year, especially despite being involved in some not-so-great storylines. He's often overlooked because of the consistent level of excellence around him from Edward James Olmos, May McDonnell, James Callis, and this year's MVP, Michael Hogan. Bonus shout-out to Mark Sheppard, who did more with one character in three episodes as Romo Lampkin that many do over the course of a season.

Also, Steven Weber in Studio 60, Chi McBride on Pushing Daisies, and Lisa Edelstein on House did/do a lot with a little week in and week out.

Robert Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

I would have to say Robert Knepper on Prison Break. An incredibly silly show, but he has created one of the best characters on TV. He is getting less airtime the third season, but for the first two he took downright silly lines and made them seem so menacing that I locked my windows at night. I can still sometimes hear him "serenading" Tweener, and it still scares me. His threats are often long(see his confrontation with Michael at the end of last season) but he delivers them so well that it works(see the same confrontation). His character is pretty funny too, but not anti-southern. Hard to pull off. So, yeah, for the second half of Season 2, I nominate Robert Knepper as T-Bag, for one of, if not the most interesting character on TV. He is/was the only reason to watch.

Torin Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

All of the non-Michael Chiklis actors on The Shield, Buddy Garrity and Smash's mom on Friday Night Lights, Grace Zabriskie (hilarious one moment, heart breaking the next) on Big Love, Jack McBrayer on 30 Rock and the entire casts of Battlestar Galactica and The L Word (both shows prove that Emmy voters either don't have cable or are complete idiots).

Stef Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

For me it's Jennifer Esposito on "Samantha Who?" I laugh my butt off every time she's on screen. Even the tiniest facial expression makes me crack up. I had no idea she was so hilarious!

I second everyone who said Jensen Ackles. Supernatural in general is such an underrated show that gets NO love from EW at all, and Ackles so charismatic in that role. He should be a major movie star by now.

GeeMoney Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

I second the person who said Mr. Muggles. He rocks!

Actually, I think Marcia Cross on Desperate Housewives is pretty underrated. Most people focus all of their attention on Teri Hatcher, and I honestly think she's the least derserving of it. Marcia, in my opinion, has the best role on DH, and she brings it every Sunday night.

Garry Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Most if not all of the Allison Mack posts here are bogus. Did Howard Stern tell his listeners to do this?

Lyn Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

The hilarious cast of ..... Chuck. Once I got through the DVR backlog- I can't get enough!

Lauren Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:04 AM EST

A year ago, I would have said Rainn Wilson on The Office but that funny, accomplished actor is starting to get the recognition he deserves.

Scott Adsit and Judah Friedlander on 30 Rock. (The latter was particularly perfect in last week's episode.)

Penn Badgley (Dan Humphrey) on Gossip Girl...witty and sexy, yum yum.

And two of the absolute best performers in a terrific ensemble on Friday Night Lights:
Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen) and the actor who plays Jason Street--the QBs present and past.
The former: bang-up job of accurately portraying a teenage boy, but with a weightiness of a kid who has a lot on his plate. From episode one, his interactions with the actress playing the grandmother have been touching and real. He can play both a deer caught in headlights and a person who is strong enough to weather the bad times.

The guy who plays Jason Street-- one word, wow. Where's his Emmy?

I agree about Eric Mabius--I've liked him since The L Word, season 1.

step Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

Kyle Chandler as Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights. His performance is nothing less than awe-inspiring.

snarky Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

Mr. MUGGLES!!!!!!!!! He is in every episode and does not have any superpowers, but steals evry scene. The best furry character since "eddie" on Frasier.

Beth again Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

Kenneth from 30 Rock!

Vandl74 Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:39 AM EST

Zeljko Ivanek is great and has been in tons of stuff, including playing a great sleaze in "Oz."

My pick would be Justin Kirk and Kevin Nealon of "Weeds." They are seriously hilarious and they make the show, IMO.

Also, Michael Emerson of "Lost" cannot be denied-- it's hard to get distracted when he's onscreen!

Lastly, Glenn Fitzgerald of "Dirty Sexy Money" is a hoot- LOVE him.

Beth Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:39 AM EST

I really think that one person is just saying "Allison Mack" over and over. I have been a Smallville fan since the show began, and I'm sorry, but Chloe is not the deepest of characters, nor is Allison Mack that great of an actress. Spitting out fast-talking pop culture zingers does not make you interesting! I would pick John Glover, Michael Rosenbaum, or even Annette O'Toole before I picked Allison Mack.

Nicolletta Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:36 AM EST

Kathryn Erbe-Law & Order: Criminal Intent
Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein-House

Rachel K Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

Jason Segal on HIMYM; he's HILARIOUS! I'm glad NPH finally got some recognition (he deserved it!) but Segal is the yin to his yang. That song he sang on the piano about the slap countdown was ingenious. I laughed for days.

Garry Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:21 AM EST

There is no more compelling (and unsung) an actress on TV today than Maura Tierney as Abby on "ER". For the past several seasons, she has gradually become the focal center of a truly excellent cast, and has enmeshed herself as the real heart and soul of the show. Her current storyline--Abby falling off the wagon and sinking deeper into alcoholism-- is not only worthy of an Emmy, but Tierney should have an entire collection of Emmys by now.

Whoever has been writing off "ER" as past its prime is very much mistaken.
This will be Tierney's last season--catch her now while you still can!

Bill Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

Ivanek's Southern accent was terrible.

Bill Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

Ivanek's Southern accent was terrible.

samantha Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Gary Dourdan, Eric Szmanda and George Eads and the rest of the cast from CSI. I'd rather watch them root around in the dark than Dr. McDreary and his ilk on Grey's Anatomy.

Maggie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

Chloe Sullivan, portrayed by the wonderful Allison Mack is surely the most unsung hero on TV. She's always there at the hero's side, supporting him and doing the work of a hero for virtually no recognition.

Serenity Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

All the John Barrowman nods for Torchwood, but no David Tennant? He's the Doctor, for chrissake. Without the success of Dr Who (the ones with DT thank you very much), there wouldn't be a Torchwood. David Tennant does a wonderful job with the complex character he's been given and deserves more recognition than he's been given.

Rich Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:08 AM EST

Ray Wise, Reaper.

Swoosie Kurtz and Ellen Greene, Pushing Daisies.

Jakeem Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:49 AM EST

Veteran actor Paul Schulze blew me away in an episode of "Mad Men" titled "The Hobo Code." He played a down-on-his-luck drifter in a Depression-era flashback, and his character was so captivating, I was amazed.
Schulze probably is best known for playing authority figures (such as his recent stint as a ruthless FBI agent on "Journeyman"). But it was nice to see another side of him in an Emmy worthy performance.

Rhonda Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:02 AM EST

Robert Sean Leonard, whose Wilson balances House so well each week.
Elizabeth Mitchell, a powerhouse of an actress on Lost.
Yunjin Kim, chronically overlooked on Lost yet always providing so many layers to Sun.
Daniel Dae Kim, also of Lost, who brings depth to every line he speaks.
Amanda Tapping, a gem of an actress from Stargate Atlantis (and formerly Stargate SG-1), who remains trapped in Canadian anonymity.

Pyro Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:45 AM EST

Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hartigay for magnetic and charismatic performances on a procedural that these days saddles them with awful and boring storylines.

Kevin Mckidd for trying his best on a show that ... I have yet to figure out what it's about.

Tanya Huff for writing a wonderful episode for Blood Ties despite the way they massacred her books.

David Greenwalt for leaving the travesty that is Moonlight. Nothing associated with Buffy, Angel and Joss Whedon should be anywhere near that drivel.

And the Dubois Girls on Medium for making their mom flawed, yet Allison is far better for them. They, and Jake Webber make Meddium a far better show than the incredbly boring, and always perfectly coiffed, dressed Melinda on Ghost Whisperer. Oh, and lets not forget, her ever perfect accessory, her perfect husband.

Barry Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:39 AM EST

It's nice to see Zeljko Ivanek get a mention. My first memory of him is his role with Jack Lemmon in the movie Mass Appeal. That was 1984, and well worth checking out for those that may have missed it. The supporting cast of Bones, for sure, as well as the supporting cast of Pushing Daisies, which doesn't seem to be getting much recognition.

Mab Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:27 AM EST

John Barrowman on Torchwood - so much better than Dr Who in SO many ways. I hate that the Torchwood seasons are so short - they would be perfect right now.

Judith Light on Ugly Betty - OMG, YES. She simply owns the screen whenever she's on and her comedic talent is better than I ever thought.

Kathering Heigl and TR Knight for keeping their characters McAwesome on a show that's filled with McBoring.

Allison Mack for keeping Chloe relatable despite being surrounded by a Lois Lane that's sleeping her way to the top of the Daily Planet and a felonious Lana Lang basking the in excuses Superman thinks up for her.

Michael Rosenbaum for giving us a Lex that never ceases to be sensational, often showing up the purported hero of the show.

And Erick Kripke - for me, he and Supernatural are a worthy successor to the hole in TV-Land left behind by Joss Whedon. If only they could both write an episode of Supernatural - now that would be perfect!

L Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:11 AM EST

Molly Price is fantastic. I loved 3rd Watch, largely because of her. She deserves her own show. And some meaty movie parts too!

Allison Mack Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:02 AM EST

I think that Becky Newton's done a fantastic job with her character ("Allison Mack") on "Ugly Betty". That "Milkshake" bit at the wedding a few weeks ago was priceless. Also, the supporting cast on "30 Rock" is absolutely brilliant - after the crapfest that was "Ally McBeal", I never thought I'd be able to tolerate Jane Krakowski (playing "Allison Mack"), much less look forward to every line she utters. And since I don't think they qualify for an Emmy nomination, how about Charla and Mirna (a.k.a. "Shmirna", or "Team Allison Mack") from "The Amazing Race"?

sherry Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:49 AM EST

I love Judith Light in Ugly Betty the past two seasons. Hope she gets an Emmy nod for guest star. And I have to agree with Jake Webber from Medium. He'd be nice to wake up to after a bad dream...or just any morning.

Jodi Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:17 AM EST

Maura Tierney. She's been the only reason to watch ER for years, but is pretty consistantly ignored.

ns Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:01 AM EST

I second the mention of Becki Newton, who is maybe the best comic actress on TV right now. Someone who is really unsung, because nobody watched the show, is Kevin M. Richardson, who played giant Rockefeller in The Knights of Prosperity. Also unsung: everyone in the cast of Prison Break, for not cracking up as they read their lines.

drock Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:08 AM EST

Is the same person posting all of these Allison mack posts? Seriously?

My choice is Yunjin Kim who plays Sun on Lost.

bdog Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:44 PM EST

What the hell, who is Allison Mack? Never seen the show...
Unsung? I'd say anyone on 'My Name is Earl'-they're all lost in the Ugly Betty lovathon-not that I don't love Ugly Betty-and Becky Newton? (Amanda) is freaking brilliant-her milkshake brought this boy around for sure...also, the woman who plays Claire's Mom on Heroes is fantastic...and Kelly Rutherford on Gossip Girl id close to perfect...Jane Krakowski on 30 Rock...plus the guy who plays Alec Baldwin's assistant, also on Weeds..anyone on Weeds..need I go on?

Liz Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:36 PM EST

I echo every one who mentioned Allison Mack. Also, Ted from Life who's brief moments of screen time are always awesome.

Betty Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:29 PM EST

What about the cast of ER? I stopped watching it a long time ago but have since rediscovered it. The cast have given it new life. I'd also nominate the cast of Dexter and the cast of BSG. Easily the two best shows on televsion.

VicsBoxers Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM EST

I agree w/ tia77. (MIT) Men In Trees cast deserves the "unsung" award. No violence in the show. Just lovable, silly, quirky, nice people plowing thru life, resolving their silly issues & connecting w/ one another. Kind of like us out here in the real world. The cast gets that point and conveys the saga with humanity. Two yrs ago Anne Heche wouldn't be my pick for anything - now I can't imagine MIT without her, or anyone on the cast... EASILY THE NICEST SHOW ON TV... proof? Even my three teenagers watch and enjoy it (TOGETHER!)

Phil Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

Mrs. C, you seem to be able to point out that "this entry requests people's opinions" and yet you fail to also see that Michael asked "Who were the biggest unsung heroes of TV in 2007?" Allison mack has been on Smallville for the past FEW YEARS last time I checked. I know cause I'm a fan, so yeah its nice she is getting attention, but technically y'all didn't answer the question, so the love for Chloe is nice, but a couple seasons too late...My 2 cents...

brighteyes Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:13 PM EST

Wow people complaining because some posters love Allison Mack? Let them recognize her when others do not :) She plays one hell of a Lois Lane in that Smallville series!

My choice is Alyson Hannigan, she never gets the attention she deserves. Another would be Kelly Kapoor from The Office, she is absolutely amazing!

Anya Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

Cast of Criminal Minds: I loved Gideon and was sad to see him go. I didn't hold out much hope for the new season, but thus far, the cast is as great as ever.

It's the writers on Supernatural that deserve a ten-fold raise for writing an amazing, sharp, intelligent show. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Jeffery Dean Morgan have thrived through each season, making the Winchesters must-see TV. Give me the substance of Supernatural any time over the insubstantial Gossip Girl.

Allison Mack - routinely ignored by the network, while her character is often portrayed by Smallville as the girl his High and Mighty Superman would never Dare Touch, because she's just not pretty enough for the CW's new brand of Superman, the actress continues to elevate the utter nonsense the writers put her character through.

Cpt Jack Harkness - Torchwood: sexy, funny, intelligent and openly gay sci-fi hero that is a thrill to watch. John Barrowman never ceases to amaze me as Jack - he outdoes Dr Who by a mile.

JG Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:39 PM EST

Zeljko Ivanek is a great choice. He really brought his character to life. Another is Robert Sean Leonard. Wilson makes House better. A third person is Allison Mack. No matter what she's given to work with, she makes the scene worth watching. All three of these actors make the scenes and actors they're with better.

Anna Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:27 PM EST

I have to go with the entire cast of BSG. They always go unrecognized and yet there are so many wonderful actors on that show. It's too bad, really.

I'm not sure where all this Allison Mack love is coming from. I used to watch Smallville all the time and she was good, but not "all that".

Ms. C. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:05 PM EST

This entry requests people's opinions. If people feel that Allison Mack deserves a lot more recognition than she is getting, then why shouldn't they state their opinion? The lack of publicity from the CW for Allison Mack is a big and constant complaint from Allison Mack fans generally, so of course, this entry would resonate with Mack Fans. If you disagree, then nominate whomever you feel deserves more credit/publicity than they are getting.

BTW, I have subscribed to EW since 1991, so unless you are one of the approx. 6,000 people who have subscribed to EW longer, don't tell me how Popwatch rolls.

B Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:51 PM EST

Any of the supporting actors on Bones. Eric Millegan, T.J. Thyne, Michaela Conlin, Tamara Taylor. All of them. Emily Deschanel is not given enough credit either, but those four are never talked about and they're brilliant.

Vlada Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:42 PM EST

Oh, and Jake Webber from Medium. He's sarcastic, smart and sexy. He's ability to convey both deep devotion to and frustration with Allison is amazing.

Vlada Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:38 PM EST

Eric Mabius does a nice job with a character that's probably not all that interesting on paper. Similarly, Taylor Kitsch is often ignored when people praise the young cast of Friday Night Lights, but I think he does a lot more than is on the page with just one look.

Jensen Ackles of Supernatural has a bright future too if he'd just pick the right film projects.

To Elizabeth Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Latish may be name-calling, but it's crystal clear some Allison Mack fansite has hijaccked this post, and that's seriously icky. Popwatch doesn't roll like that. Smallville fans are the new Veronica Mars fans: obnoxious!

Ok, I see Allison Mack's legion of fans have taken over this blog..interesting, wonder if this would be an appropriate place to mention taht ADAM BRODY was announced earlier this week to play THE FLASH in the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE movie! Anyways, my fave unsung hero this short Fall 2007 season has got to be Ryan McPartlin who plays Captain Awesome on NBC's CHUCK! Sure I'm not going to lie, tuning in almost every other week to see him shirtless is a HUGE PLUS, but like the 2nd episode when he taught Chuck how to tango? PRICELESS! He's hot, but he brings the funny too! I'm in love (with his character!).

mikey Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

How about some love for Lestat? No, not the tragic vampire of Ann Rice fame, but the Pomeranian actor who steals every scene he is in and displays more range of character than just about anyone on Heroes. You may know him better as Mr. Muggles.
Furthering his case, Lestat also appears as Maria Sharapova's favorite photo subject in a current Canon commercial.

Great call on Ivanek. He was brilliant, but I sure won't hold my breath for him to get an Emmy nom. If Forest Whitaker couldn't get one for his work on "The Shield" I don't see Ivanek getting one (especially over the more high-profile, but deserving Ted Danson)

Here are my picks for this year: Speaking of "The Shield", I'll go with Walton Goggins. Also, Brad Leland consistently makes me laugh and cringe as Buddy Garrity on Friday Night Lights. Robert Iler on The Sopranos, Peter Macnicol on 24 (one of the only good things about Season 6) Shawn Pyfrom on Desperate Housewives, and, last but certainly not least, Sonja Walger on Tell Me You Love Me.

For this to be a fan club of 10 year old girls it's ironic that your comment Latish is as immature as one.

Elizabeth Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

In agreement with everyone on her who mentioned Allison Mack, I would like to mention Michael Rosenbaum of Smallville. Michael plays the character of Lex Luthor perfectly. For a character who is supposed to be the villian of the story, you can't help but feel for him and love to hate him all at the same time. Michael and Allison are seriously the highlights of Smallville.

Gen Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:47 PM EST

I'm much older than ten, and not in any fan club. I'd add Allison Mack to that list as well. Largely ignored by the press, she brings it every week. Gotta give a gal credit where credit is due. *Runs off to see if Allison has a fan club that accepts anyone over ten*

latish Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:41 PM EST

So glad the Allison Mack fanclub of 10-year-old girls put out an APB on this popwatch item.

Donny Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

Allison Mack, of course. The most underrated actress on TV.

DC Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

Allison Mack of Smallville- that talented yet unsung lady is the only reason I watch SV nowadays.

Lillie Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

Biggest unsung hero of TV without, without a doubt, is Allison Mack of Smallville. She's not only beautiful but is a wonderful actress. For someone who is supposedly only playing a supporting role, Allison brings so much life into her character that she constantly outshines her co-stars who are playing the main characters.(with the exception of Michael Rosenbaum) Even though she's pretty much overlooked by the CW, her fans adore her and realize that this highly underrated actress should be getting the props that she deserves.

Mary Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:32 PM EST

Allison Mack of course!

Snsetblaze Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:24 PM EST

Rick Gonzalez as Ben on Reaper. All the preview articles talked about the actor, Tyler Labine, who plays sidekick Soc. But Rick has filled out the trio - most of the time as the conscience - and has many funny bits of his own. And its not a complete episode if Ben doesn't get hurt (not seriously hurt), get kidnapped, or fall in love with the vessel.

Kris Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

Definitely Allison Mack from Smallville. She's such a whirlwind and has an awesome screen presence.

morgan Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

Allison Mack from Smallville. Consistently one of the most awesome characters/actresses on television and yet she gets ZERO media attention.

Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl. She took a character in Blair that could be one dimensionally bitchy and turned her into a fan favorite and a character to root for.

Sophia Bush- OTH. Literally the only reason to watch the show.

Donald Sutherland- DirtySexyMoney. Just because.

Martha Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:05 PM EST

My unsung heroes on TV are Chi McBride and Swoosie Kurtz on "Pushing Daisies," injecting vinegar into all the sweetness at opportune moments. I also think Robert Sean Leonard and all the supporting actors on "The Office" deserve a mention, but it's entirely possible that all these people are sung...

Tracy Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

I have to agree with the folks who mentioned Allison Mack. She's amazingly talented.

Stephanie T. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

I am not so sure about Molly's new hair color but to me the unsung hero prize must go to Adam Beach of L&O SVU. He was the right fit.

tia77 Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:54 PM EST

Kristin Bell was always lauded for her performance as Veronica- and she was fabulous, but the supporting cast was equally wonderful. Enrico Colantoni, Francis Capra, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino, and Micheal Muhney all deserve praise for a funny and intelligent show.

And then there's the entire cast of Men in Trees. I can't even name a favorite. Not one is out of place in this quirky dramedy.

Ms. C. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:52 PM EST

Praise starved? This has Allison Mack's name written all over it. I keep waiting for the CW to wake up and realize what a gem they have in her. Allison Mack consistently elevates the material she is given on Smallville. She creates moments out of very ordinary lines and scenes. Her character is smart, inquisitive, determined, funny, strong, compassionate and caring, but tough enough to kick behind to save the day when needed. On a show about young Superman, Allison Mack has created an equally compelling heroine to root for.

Melissa Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

Allison Mack....come on she's awesome and gets over looked all the time, her character is always kicking major butt and she's been known to save Superman a time or two..how many characters can claim that?????

Allsion Mack Rocks!~

cdrivanova Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:49 PM EST

Does anyone else remember Molly Price on Sex and the City as Susan Sharon, Carrie's friend who had that verbally abusive husband? She was terrific in that, too.

Lynette Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:48 PM EST

Allison Mack from Smallville!

rachel Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

allison mack- smallville.
shes a funny, smart, and a great character, but shes always overlooked by tom welling.

MEM Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:29 PM EST

Indeed, great work on highlighting ADA Danvers - finally. I cast my vote for pretty much any one on Mad Men, but especially Christina Hendricks and John Slattery. And who else is surprised by how funny Kevin Nealon is on Weeds?

Jill Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

to Pamela: you took the words outta my mouth! Loved Burn Notice. Bruce Campbell is one of the best supporting actors/scene stealers in the business.

Brooke Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

Both Ivanek and Price are outstanding!
If you ever get the chance to catch up on old Law & Order episodes, both of them have popped up a few times are are always amazing.

Pamela Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

Mcisluv: Ha! It should read "on the near-left" since it's still left of the text.

Gabrielle Anwar (far better on this than her consumptive turn as Princess Margaret on The Tudors) and the great Bruce Campbell: both on Burn Notice.

S.R. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

Allison Mack, without a doubt. Someone needs to hand her an Emmy already.

mscisluv Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

Unless Molly Price is a bald old guy, then she's not pictured on the left...

Mich Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:10 PM EST

Rhys Darby is terrific as the rock band manager on Flight of the Conchords.

Laura Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:58 PM EST

This year I've loved watching Michael Emerson on LOST and Kristin Chenoweth on Pushing Daisies - opposite ends of the spectrum, character-wise, but the pair inject the same kind of energy and enthusiasm into their roles. I've also loved the casts of The Office and Mad Men for working so fluidly as both groups and individual actors/actresses.

Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

Thank you for paying homage to Zeljko Ivanek (or as I call him, ASA Danvers from Homicide). I love this guy, and once you memorize his face, you come to realize he's basically in every movie or TV show ever made.

If you're talking about unsung heroes though, you must mention the entire cast and crew of BSG.
