Melinda Doolittle turns to food-service industry to pay the bills

Dec 5, 2007, 07:45 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Advertising, Food and Drink

Okay, so as we discussed yesterday, Melinda Doolittle has not (yet) scored a major-label record deal following her third-place run on last season's American Idol, but all is not lost. My pal Dawnie Walton, back from a recent trip to Atlanta, informs me that the former backup singer has parlayed her Idol fame into a different kind of gig: Singing the praises of Zaxby's chicken restaurants:

Yeah, Melinda fans, I died a little bit inside the first time I saw it, too, but that initial wave of rage against 19 Entertainment has been replaced by something else. Is it an early-morning craving for fried chicken and Texas toast? Ugh, I need help.

Louise, Thanks for the information. I'm still stuck because I don't order over the Internet. I guess I'm just out of luck, but I do appreciate your trying to help me. Melinda can be
lucky she has a friend like you.

Can't believe the CD release date is now February--of what year? I never knew it took so long for one CD to get out to the public. How do the other people who were on Idol get theirs out so soon? Anyway, I'm getting tired of the delay, delay, delay. Probably won't buy it anyway.

Whatever happened to the Christmas CD we heard about
in June? I am disappointed. On that "Moments with Melinda," Melinda talked about 3 different CD projects--the one that is finally being released in the "near" future, a Christmas CD, and another one with original music. Will that be Christmas 2009 or 2010? Also the Street Team used to allow people to learn about Melinda's schedule without registering. It was good advertising. That was stopped, and I miss it.

WOW! Congrat's to Melinda. I will register at Melindasbackups Thank!

Listened to "Moments with Melinda" but didn't get to talk to Melinda. Guess I am left out of the loop because I don't do My Space (bad experience). Thanks to Tyler for doing these "Moments" programs. I'm sure it is a lot of work and pressure. The trivia questions took time that could have been used with Melinda. Just refer people to the Street Team site.

As much as I think of Melinda as a person and a vocalist, I am tired of waiting for the CD. I know Melinda has many projects she is working on, but sometimes fans get discouraged by being put off again and again. From June to January with promises in between gets old. I can't stand getting my hopes up for nothing any more!

Melinda Doolittle was the best female contestant on AI EVER. I hope her album comes out soon...I've been waiting for a long time for it. Clay Aiken didn't win either and he's doing great...and he was the best male vocalist ever on that show.

Bob Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

This is really sad. I just can't believe that with her talent, she couldn't score a recording deal. Instead she has to stoop so low as to make commercials for fried chickens and ice cream. I guess talent is nothing without sex appeal. What a waste!!

Melinda just releases her first song on i tunes My Funny Valentine. She is amazing. Melinda has recently signed with MPCA. She will release three albums over the next year. The first album will be released in June of 2008 and will feature Melinda’s take on a variety of songs. She plan also Christmas album for 2008 holiday season, followed by an album of entirely original material shortly after/

David Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 04:28 AM EST

Melinda is creating her own brand, and this is good. Jordin Sparks, and the other guy need AI to sponsor them, but Melinda is actually smarter then the other two, because she is dictating her own career. Her true fans will wait for her CD whenever it comes out.

nick Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

A League of HER OWN!!!!
I'm outraged to hear this tremendously talented individual has not received a recording contract. This is a classy vocalist. Her style is for all music lovers. Her music will sell like Carey,Dion, and Streisand. Whichever company picks her up will have a gold mine.

Hello Louise made a statement that Melinda has a CD in the mix can anyone tell me anymore about it? I have looked on MySpace but cannot find out much. Does anyone know when the CD is to be released?

Barbara Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 05:08 AM EST

Melinda Doolittle should be signed to a recording music contract. Here CD would make money for any recording company. She is a mega talent and I am always looking and asking stores when her CD will be out. I search the internet for word of when her CD will be in stores. I want to hear more. I feel cheated. Simon himself said that Melinda is a huge talent. What is wrong with the music company out there? I have no plans to tune into American Idol in 2008 if the producers will not help Melinda connect with the Music Industry and help this major talent have her chance. She is a gift and deserves to bless us all with her savory voice.

Nancy Walker Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 10:26 AM EST

The food looked so good it sold itself. I don't feel sorry for her because commercials pay.

Not all Idol winners-or second place, have had great success. Justin Guarini and Diana Degarmo did not sell very well;but at least Diana had a shot on Broadway. Most Idol contestants are mediocre or have moderately decent talent. Some are special, but most are just average singers who can carry a tune with the exception of Camille Velasco who is one of the worst Idols to ever disgrace the stage. She made it on the top twelve because her image is very commercial;but where is her record deal?

Louise Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 12:01 AM EST

Alway say behind a good person alway satan show up and yu probably one of them. Because Melinda She a amazing women of God, and really smart women in life. I will pray for your soul tonight. Say thing like that

GriotLori Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

Michael, Michael, Michael...Why doth thou fret so? The weekly-thing getting to ya? The whole world really did not watch American Idol. Since the AI tour ended Melinda has scored product endorsements, appearanced at major grown-up venues and for grown-up causes, created her own fundraiser showcase, hosted/performed in a major concert for her alma mater that will be televised nationally by PBS on Christmas Eve and is currently touring with a veteran performer who brings yet another demographic to her mix. This very smart businesswoman/artist is reaching a wider audience of adults who do not text-message nor download their tunes, but will support her career for the long-haul by buying CDs (or whatever), tickets to live shows and anything else to which Melinda lends her talents. Rather than rushing out with a sub-par product, Melinda is making smart choices that showcase her as the real deal. To quote another shocking boot-ee (Elliot), Melinda "(Your fans) will wait for you."

Ethan Meadow Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 08:36 PM EST

I'm not concerned for Melinda. She is doing just fine. She's been featured on Michael W. Smith's tour and also has an amazing story in the new Chicken Soup for the Soul American Idol version. To hear in her own words how her faith in God helped her get where she is one of the best thing in the book. Since God's got her back I doubt she should worry about anything. More information on this book check out: http://www.chickensoup.com/ai

EarthWindFire82 Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

I don't really think this is bad for Melinda. There are several other Zaxby's commercials that have other celebrities as spokesmen for them. I'm just glad that she isn't out here with an album that 14 people purchased. Her time will come soon. Besides, even though she can REALLY sing, she isn't want Idol wanted to market. There's no need to feel bad about her doing this commercial because at least she's getting paid!

Stephanie T. Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

I think that it might be the "Dionne Farris" complex. Like Mindy, Dionne Farris has a flawless soul/monotone gospel voice. However, she was a one hit wonder because she was marketed in the wrong category. Working with Michael W. Smith is a good start so let's see what will happen within the new year.

groucho Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:33 AM EST

It is still great to see Melinda profiled nationally even if it is product endorsement. Personally I don't think that Mindy will not get a recording contract because I am sure there are record labels out there interested in signing her. What we don't know is if she is still deciding which of the offers to get. Personally I think she a perfect fit for the recently re-opened Stax label which signs soul singers. Or maybe Blue Note. However I wish either Concord Jazz or Verve will snatch her up -- their fine production will greatly enhance the classic album that Mindy will create for her debut album.

David Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:15 AM EST

Zaxby's is AWESOME as other people have said. I'm guessing its mostly a southern thing, I know they are all over Georgia, there are 3 of them within 10 miles of where I live. Anyway, if she's not signed to a lable, maybe doing commercials like this will allow her to record and release her own CD they way she wants without benig part of the corporate crap machine.

Fatima Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

It wouldn't be so sad if if weren't a completely innane commercial. Like, at least let her sing a jingle.

Jane Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

There's something really wrong with the world if this woman still does not have a recording contract. Hey music industry! Put down the crack pipe and do something with Melinda. I have to believe that someone out there knows how to take advantage of her talent- someone who isn't Zaxbys'.

queen of disrepair Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:40 PM EST

I want a MindyDoo album! And now I want chicken fingers too...dammit!!
How can this woman not be in the studio right now????? Why is Kellie Pickler making singles left and right (I actually think her cover of Santa Baby is sweet, god help me...) Why isn't Mindy telling me to Go Tell It On A Mountain for the holidays? Why isn't she recording a duet with of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Jon Bon Jovi? Can't somebody get her to sing "My Funny Valentine" in time for Valentine's Day??????

Stephanie T. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

I think that the problem was the marketing value. I am still convinced that season six was rigged a bit. As good as Taylor Hicks'es voice is, he was not a big seller in 2006-7. 19 records needed a pop female singer to do battle with Miley Cyrus aka: Hannah Montana. Mindy-doo does not fit into that category. However, she does fit somewhere between Mary J. Blidge and Koko Taylor. I am shocked that EMI Jazz has not signed her up already. A fried chicken commerical? Mindy can do better.

bill Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:21 PM EST

Melinda singing ads for fried chicken..what a travesty. Although now that you mention it, I could use a couple of wings and a bisquit.

To Phil Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

Loop Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

what the hell is Zaxby's

Phil Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

Hi Everyone! Though I go back and forth to Orlando a couple times a year (its my 2nd home) I have NEVER EVER heard of Zaxby's! Let me also clarify, Orlando & the surrounding Lake Buena Vista has just about EVERY chain restaraunt & fast food joint you can possibly think of, and again, let me say it, I'VE NEVER HEARD OF ZAXBY's. So for everyone saying this is good exposure for Mindy Doo, I completely agree with you (she gettin' paid) BUT for all of us folks up North, none of us are aware of this commerical, let alone this restaraunt, and THAT IS A PROBLEM IF SHE IS TRYING TO KEEP THE ENDORSEMENTS COMING IN. Mama shoulda signed on to a deal with a NATIONAL chain, not a localized Southern chicken shack. Just my 2 cents...

Nat X Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

Love Mindy. Love Zaxby's. I don't see the problem here. Man, I would kill for Zaxby's right now. And sweet tea.

Angela H. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

It's not like Melinda has fallen off the face of the earth. She's on tour with Michael W. Smith for Christmas and will be on his cruise in July.

Gwen Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

Hey, Michael Slezak. Do you have any up-to-date information? That's an old commercial.

Kristi Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

Amen dgm, Zaxby's rocks!

Ep Sato Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

It seems odd they'd have an ad with Melinda Doolittle without her singing a jingle or at least a few notes.

On second thought, it's just nice to see her on tv again.

Nick Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Hysterical.

dgm Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

it is really good chicken

smee Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

Never loved mindydoo. There are plenty of people who can sing. She just doesn't have the charisma or sing the kind of music to breakout. Just because she was on a reality show does not entitle her to a career of stardom. I'm sure she got more for pushing chicken then most of us get in a year. Boo Hoo.

tv Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:09 AM EST

That's a lot of money folks
http://www.etoxtr.com/

Sandy K; Va Beach, VA Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:09 AM EST

First of all, this commercial was done while she was touring with idol. It was done on September 17th. I know this because when on saw Melinda at the Hampton, VA show on the 18th she told me she was really tired. She told me that on their day off (which was the 17th) she had flown to Texas to shoot a chicken commercial. She then took the redeye flight for the concert and hadn't had much sleep.

Secondly, I think she did an awesome job! Melinda is a fantastic person and talent and she will get signed!

Sally Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:46 AM EST

Nick, I disagree -- don't feel sorry for her. Rejoice that she's getting exposure, because this could lead to more endorsements! You guys think having a record contract is a BIG thing, well -- ask half the singers out there that don't have hit records on the charts, or have failed records. It's not a big deal folks. And she's doing a credible job in that commercial. I would buy the chicken!

Nick Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:31 AM EST

The saddest part isn't the horrendousness that is talking about a perfect bite of fried chicken. It's that she had to say "This is Melinda Doolittle" at the end. Like people don't know. Because they forgot. Sad.

NineDaves Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:27 AM EST

is there some petition we can sign or something to help mindy doo?

Sally Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:10 AM EST

Actually those commercials do pay the bills and it gives her exposure. Some celebs are paid $1Mil to do commercials. Jennifer Hudson got $3Mil as a Avon spokewoman. Don't you see Pene Cruz, Eva Mendez, ScarJo, and other hawking products? That's a lot of money folks. It's called "entertainment" and just because you sing and/or dance doesn't mean you have to stay trapped in that category.

Joe C Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:56 AM EST

I hear that, since Taylor Hicks always looked and sounded constipated when he sang, he will be singing the praises of Pepto-Bismol soon. D'oh!

Working Girl Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:48 AM EST

Is anybody watching "Idol Rewind" in syndication? If yes - are you really annoyed that after they get through Hollywood week, they start over again at the first auditions? They did it on the season 1 rewind, too. WTF?

Also, how much do you think they paid Dunkleman to narrate season 1, and "Clay D. Lang" himself to narrate season 2?

suzanne Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:47 AM EST

She sang recently at an ice skating show in Cleveland (Scott Hamilton & Friends I think) my sister and mom were at along with Phil Stacey. They were both way more impressed with Phil they said.
