Trailer Blazer: 'Mamma Mia'

Okay, full disclosure: I've never seen the Broadway show, the one that's taken over Cats' "now and forever" spot at the Winter Garden Theater. I've barely listened to any ABBA; enough to recognize some of the songs — since I have been alive during some of the 20th century — but not enough to profess any love for them. But after seeing this trailer...

...I'd probably go see this flick (it opens in July 2008). Why? Because it looks like vacation (in a way that Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights completely didn't; that one looked like work). And who doesn't wanna go on vacation in a beautiful place, with sun-kissed people dancing around as if life was an open bar? There's only one weird thing here: Much like the Sweeney Todd trailers, you'd almost never know this was a musical. I caught a bare couple of shots of Meryl Streep singing, but nary a do-re-mi from Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, or Stellan Skarsgard. Again, I say weird.

So who is the real Dad? Sam?
Thanks for the insight.

I am beyond excited for this movie. Saw the traveling company and LOVED it. The music, the fun, the story...silly but fantastic! Colin Firth can do no wrong! OMG I'm nearly giggling I'm so excited for it.

No Fernando - saw the show 4 times - cannot wait for the movie. Fernando was my fave Abba hit too in the day but trust me I discovered new songs to love in this show - international hits that did not necessarily have US airplay - Chiquachita for example - which is Spanish flavored and a lot like Fernando. Love Abba, love Streep, Pierce, Colin, CAN"T WAIT

sigh, you had me at "Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, or Stellan Skarsgard." Will definately see this movie.
Just curious from those that have seen the stage show, does my fav ABBA song "Fernando" make an appearance?

Not to nitpick, but the plot is a complete ripoff of a 1968 Gina Lollabrigida movie called Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell. Same "three guys might be the daddy" plot. The only diff is it isn't a musical. But it's very cute and funny and will tide Mamma Mia fanatics until the movie comes out.

I am a huge fan of the Stage show and I have the original recording of the soundtrack memorized. If Marc had seen the show then he would have known that the men don't sing very much at all.

The international trailer over at uk yahoo is so much more fun and is done much better. Plus you get a scene of Streep singing. Can't wait for this movie!

I love ABBA - so I am sure I will see this film (and I also love Meryl Streep - and Pierce Brosnan. YUM!). There is no music that make me happier. Just pop in "ABBA Gold" when I am down and I find myself dancing and singing. PURE POP JOY!

how does it not look like a musical?? there's singing and dancing throughout the entire trailer unlike sweeney's completely instrumental and lone, "i shall have vengeance"...wasn't crazy about the Mamma Mia stage show because I felt like i was getting blown out of the theatre, but this looks amazing...like one big trip to greece.

Honestly...how did this trailer NOT look like a musical to Marc? It started with singing, took a short break for two lines of dialogue, and then the rest was the title track, intercut with images of people dancing around (and what look like fun productio numbers). I love me some movie musicals, so i'm there.

With ABBA songs making up most of the sound on the trailer and all the dancing around exotic beaches, a musical is EXACTLY what it looks like. And it looks like a blast. Looking forward to seeing it next year.

I've seen Mamma Mia 3 times...IT ROCKS! Well, maybe you don't rock so much as sway enthusiasticly. I'd definitely put it as my #2 musical, behind Rent. I'll surely see the movie.

I'm sorry but I can't stand that Amanda Siegfried girl that's in this. All I can think of when I see her is Mean Girls or Veronica Mars, where she's an idiot and a brat. But especially Mean Girls. I can't ever think of her as anything but a complete bubblehead.
I'll skip this one.

I saw the traveling company in Boston, and I was embarrassed at how much fun I had at it. Upbeat, goofy, insubstantial, and quite a blast. If they catch half the spirit of the stage show, it will be worth seeing.

There's singing (parts of at least two solos) and lots of dancing. (at least in the International trailer which is much better) It doesn't look like they're hiding that it's a musical. It looks like a complete hoot and the locations are gorgeous. It also looks like a film and not just a stage show put on film.

I'm a musical dork, a Meryl fan, and an Abba junkie so I'll pretty much be there on opening day!

Babba Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Meryl looks great. The singing sounds awful. Think I'll skip this one and just listen to my ABBA cd.
