To Care or Not to Care: Madonna the director

Dec 28, 2007, 12:24 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Film, Madonna, To Care or Not to Care, You know you're getting old when...

Madonna_l Madonna's directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, will premiere at February's Berlin Film Festival. Apparently, it's a "low-budget music-based comedy" that stars Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I). Are you jonesin' to see what she's capable of doing behind the camera? The woman's never lacked vision. Or is your level of enthusiasm limp? (Maybe some folks, like those who starred in The Next Best Thing, shouldn't be calling the shots on a movie set...)

And while we're on the subject of Madonna and movies: Am I the only one who kinda liked Who's That Girl, which was released 20 years ago?

Next Best thing, Body of Evidence were horrible but EVERYONE needs to be spanked, not just her. She was the only one who showed up for work in Dangerous Game, OK in Girl6, Had Evita had more live singing throughout the movie and not just the end, she may have had a nomination...maybe. Madonna, like Striesand has very good comedic timing but they take themselves too seriously and bite more than they should. They need to be directed in a role and call less shots, that could be said for a lot of vanity projects for A-listers too. That said, I am curious to see how she directs since she knows the medium and has access to see a project through. If it sucks we'll have her new album in March and tour which is her bread and butter.

She can't be much worse at it than her Tarantino-wannabe and neverwillbe husband.

nick Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

I'd love to see Disney do a live action version of "The Rescuers" (like they did with 101 Dalmations) and cast Madonna as Medusa.

Jeffrey Kirkpatrick Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

Oh, and Who's That Girl? LOVE IT!

Jeffrey Kirkpatrick Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

For some odd reason it's always been fashionable to bust on Madonna's acting skills. Mostly, she picked bad vehicles. Body of Evidence...Bloodhounds of Broadway...Shanghai Surprise. Ugh... The Next Best Thing would have been ok had she not had that stupid fake British accent seeping through every line.

But look at the films she was actually hailed in...Desperately Seeking Susan, A League of Their Own, Dick Tracy and the one that got her a Golden Globe for Best Actress, Evita. Madonna is a very underappreciated actress. I believe that with the right role and right director, she could win an Oscar. Just a shame no one would give her the chance. Although I read once that Quentin Tarantino said if he had the right role he'd cast her in a heartbeat because he believes she's got the chops.

I LOVED Whose that Girl (granted I was 12 and havent seen it since) but wasnt there an awesome tiger? I love any member of the Dunne family.

dave Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

Who's that girl was my favorite movie growing up. love it! :o)

Nathan Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 09:07 PM EST

So now there will be TWO terrible film directors in their family. How'd Revolver do again?

aron Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 07:02 PM EST

I alos love Who's That Girl and think its funny and a great comedic performance from Madonna and Griffin. If some other actress had played that role it would have been hailed as a comedy masterpiece.
It annoys me, becase most of her movies are quite good and in another 20 years the same people who hated Swept Away will say it's actually a good movie..so sad us humans! What's even sadder is that she won't really do any more movies unfortunately and i so want her to!
This movie of hers will be savaged i'm sure(but i hope not) by critics who have it in for her , because they want her to stick to just music, but i'm posiive it will be a great short movie that will lead to many many others directed by her.
WE LOVE YOU MADONNA!

Kinda loved Who's That girl, kinda? kinda??? That is like one of my all time fave movies evverrrrrr, I can remember watching it for the first time when I was 4 and I have loved it ever since!!

aa Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

you are not alone; who's that girl is a fun movie and while we're on the subject i also like under the cherry moon. of course i want to see her movie anyone who is capable of putting out the music, videos and concerts i've enjoyed all these years is someone i'm interested in watching.

Tom Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 10:26 PM EST

Who's That Girl is a fun movie. I bought the DVD last year, and the movie is STILL hilarious and enjoyable 20 years later. M's accent is annoying, but her performance is good, and she has great chemistry with Griffin Dunne.

I'm looking forward to her directorial debut. I hope she does something simple and doesn't get too preachy with it.

BrandonK Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 10:10 PM EST

I don't think she's a very good actress, but I am interested to see how she does directing. She definitely has the knack when it comes to creating music/albums, so perhaps she can apply that talent to film.

Erica Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 10:05 PM EST

I agreee with Suzanne. I have always liked Desperately Seeking Susan.

suzanne Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 07:16 PM EST

Of course being a MAdonna fanatic to this day, I can totally agree with you about "Who's That Girl". The Louden Clear" uote is the best! I loved her in Dick Tracy too, I always thought she was an ok actress who could do better but never had a really good movie to be in (except Desperately Seeking Susan).

jay Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

Look at that picture! Madonna HEARTS Goldfrapp.

V Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 06:03 PM EST

Who's That Girl? is.... nostalgic sure, but not really very good. Swept Away, however, was actually a decent film. I don't know what all the hubbub was about, it must have just been fashionable to hate that movie.

thejuanstar Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

I love Who's That Girl. And like Mario that is my favorite line. It might be my favorite line in any movie.

Paul U. Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

Paige- her worst has go to be Next Best Thing...agreed, hands down. Swept Away is actually decent (if any of the critics had actually watched it, things might have gone different for it)

Donna Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

Love you Mandi but Who's That Girl was not a good movie. Although I did enjoy the record.

Tim Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 04:13 PM EST

I loved Whos' That Girl! Still do! I think Madonna is going to do well behind the camera - she has great vision ...just look at her stage shows, and she has great taste in films (films that she's a fan of, not necessarily in)

Ballzack Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

It was actually pretty funny and at the time I thought she was gonna be huge (ha). Although as gay, I think I may have that special gene that translates things like Madonna movies, campy trash and (of course) Kathy Griffin. So it's not like straight trailer park america would get this. it's no Independence Day.

I loved Who's That Girl because it was one of the first times I saw guy on guy action (at the very end with the detectives) and was my porn at age 8. Thank U Maddie for at least that.

paige Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

You know Ceballos, I agree about Swept Away... it was nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. The Next Best Thing was a horrible, piece of trash. Therfore, I would like to have a vote on what was Madonna's worst performance/film... I am nominated The Next Best Thing (both categories)

Paul U. Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

I even have the poster for Who's That Girl, that's how much I love it. It puts you in a good mood instantly.

Knock Knock
Who's there?

Olive Who?
Olive-you, Nikki Finn!

kpatter Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

My shame is shared here for the world to read. My younger brother and I watched that movie so many times we ruined the tape. Griffin's ear always weirded us out, but other than that...It doesn't get any better or cheesier. Sean Penn's getting divorced, Madonna's a directing mother of 3, and I'm old! I hope she at least gets a fair shot before folks start shooting it down, although I must admit if I do watch it, it will be on dvd.

Mario Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

Who's that girl was awesome!

I love, love, love her character and thought she and Griffin Dune had great chemistry.

"What's the patient's name?"
"Lauden"
"what's the last name?"
"Clear"

I crack up every time I remember that line.
:)

MoroccoMole Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

Ah, my secret shame: "Who's That Girl" has always made me laugh. I mean, it's no "What's Up, Doc?" but it's pretty hilarious. (And yes, I did make people sing "What the World Needs Now" at my wedding, but it was COINCIDENCE, I tell you!)

Ceballos Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Yeah, "Who's that girl" IS pretty watchable (and quotable to this day)...

And though I risk taking it too far, you know, I'm gonna go for it. "Swept Away". I enjoyed it. Not a great film, but also not the disaster people paint it out to be.

Lesley Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

Word! I'm glad to see all the Who's That Girl love! I loved loved loved that movie when I was a kid. I rewatched it a few months ago and while yes, it was quite cheesy, it was still a lot of fun. Madonna seemed like she was having fun with the character, which was great to see. I also heart the soundtrack.

Stephanie T. Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:27 PM EST

Who's that Girl was pure campy fun but not a fantastic film. As a children's librarian I thought that her books were drab so I can't imagine what she can do as a director.

Senorito Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

"Knock-knock"
"Who's there?"
"Boo"
"Boo-who?"
"Aw, don't cry, we'll take the apartment!"

Senorito Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

They've been playing "Who's that girl" on HBO recently, my nephew left the room, my nieces already know quotes from it. "No one shushes Nikki Finn!"

Danielle Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

'Who's That Girl' was a sleep-over staple, along with 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.' Good times, good times. It was one of my favorite cassette tapes to play and I even helped my lil' sister choreograph a dance to the title song for her school's talent show.

Victor Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

You are NOT alone, Mandi..

(deep breath)

i, too, kinda liked 'Who's That Girl'..
Granted, i was 10 years old at the time, but i was also a big fan of its predecessors ('Mother' and 'Grandmother', respectively) 'What's Up, Doc' and 'Bringing Up Baby'..

Ben Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

I'm curious to read about it. Can't say I'm rushing to see it. Why doesn't she start by directing her own videos? As for who's that girl and her acting, she's not THAT bad... and Who's That Girl had some funny bits and killer soundtrack. Madonna did screwball comedy pretty well.

wendy Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

I love who's that girl one of the best 80s movies
