Julia Roberts: America's Sweetheart, or are you one of those cold people who can't stand her?

Dec 5, 2007, 01:57 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Film, Television

Tonight at 8pm EST, AMC is premiering Julia Roberts: An American Cinematheque Tribute, which is basically an awards show crossed with a roast crossed with an infomercial. And yet the reason I'm bothering to blog about it is, weirdly, that it's a pretty entertaining hour of TV. All her celebrity friends--Tom Hanks, George Clooney, David Letterman, Natalie Portman, the list gets embarrassing after a while--show up in one form or another to toast her contributions to film. Mostly, this involves telling a funny anecdote and then introducing a clip reel. (See a sneak peek below.) And again, I know that sounds sort of dull, but there is just something so pleasant, so charming about Ms. Roberts at this stage of her career that I couldn't help but grin the whole way through, even when they played that awful soundbite from Notting Hill ("I'm just a girl. Standing in front of a boy. Asking him to--" [insert vomit noise here]) not once but twice.

So, PopWatchers, check it out if you're home and bored, and until then, let's talk: What's your opinion on the lady? Is she talented, smart, funny, warm, lovely, and deserving of all her success? Or would you prefer her to go away from you now and stay there, possibly in the same box where they're keeping Meg Ryan? I think you can tell by the title of this post what I think, and I'll tell ya what--it's not just cause I like her hair. It's because of what she says at the end of tonight's special, once she finally gets on stage to accept her "award." I'll not spoil it, but it has to do with breast milk, and it took balls. And made me love her even more! Either it's the holiday spirit taking over, or man have I lost my edge!

Anyway. Let's do this in an orderly fashion. Please ring in with love/hate, favorite/least favorite movie, and why. Go!

codi - you are not helping your case here when you give us all the evidence we need to say "You have bad taste in actors"

(:|) blame Canada!

codi Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Your comments on what she is like personally and her acting abilities is your perception. There are many other people that think the exact oppisite of her. They obviously have better things to do than comment on this site. I think she is a great actress. More than capable. You guys just can't get over your ridiculous hatred for her, in my opinion because, you think she is full of herself. If you think I have bad taste in actors I also like Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Rachel Weiz, Rachel McAdams, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Connelly, Johnny Depp, Nic Cage, Casey Affleck, John Cusack.

ceci Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 11:44 AM EST

I feel like there must be SOMETHING to her if Lyle Lovett married, her but meh, overrated and she assaulted Denzel Washington on stage at the Oscars (bad form!)

Burgandy Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 05:10 PM EST

I am soooo glad to see others that can't stand her. I was thrilled to see that she wasn't in Ocean's 13, means I didn't have to fast forward throught any parts. I just wish she and her k-fraud husband would just go away, far far far away.

fredric Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

I loved the tribute to all her swearing in movies. I forgot what a potty mouth she has - LOVE it!

Catherine Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

She's a good actress, but there's something about her that just gets under my skin. She's a dealbreaker when it comes to choosing movies for me. Much as I like Tom Hanks, I might skip "Charlie Wilson's War" because she and a horrible Flo hairdo are in it.

GeeMoney Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:50 AM EST

And Cyn - Julia Roberts left Kiefer Sutherland because he was cheating on her with a stripper. She found out a few days before she was to marry him.... so I like to think that her running off with Jason Patric could be slightly understandable and defintely something to forgive her for.

GeeMoney Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

Hated Julia Roberts for years until I saw "My Best Friend's Wedding." And then she totally shined in "Erin Brockovich." I think that she is a good actress, and very deserving of any award she receives.

Beth Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

Another "meh" for her acting. She's like Tom Cruise/Hanks to me; she is too distinctive to truly dissappear into a role, so I can't buy what she's selling. However, she gained a lot of points with me when she opened the whoop-@ss on that paparrazzo the other day. That was awesome!

clarabelle Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

I used to love her but (and granted I don't know her) she seems awfully pleased with herself to the point that she comes across as smug. Although I think it's refreshing to see her try to live a normal life with her family. She's in love with herself (who isn't though?)

But because of My Best Friends Wedding and Steel Magnolias, I cannot go all out and say I don't like her.

D Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:57 AM EST

I agree about her being smug at the Oscars. She prefaced the reading of Denzel Washington's name with "I love my life!" as if the award had anything to do with her life. Like her, but after that awkward, self congragulatory moment, find it difficult to love her.

Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

maybe if she didn't have MORE THAN ONE film about her being julia roberts/America's Sweetheart, i'd feel better about her.

GingerCat Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:06 AM EST

I'm one of those cold people who doesn't like her ON SCREEN. I fully admit I don't know her, so I don't know if I'd like her in real life. But on screen, she's just unpleasant, and in interviews, she comes across as the most self-centered person alive. Maybe she's not. I go by what I see.
Least favorite movie? How about Pretty Woman, My Best Friend's Wedding, Ocean's 12? Or Runaway Bride--the preview was so bad there was no way I was wasting my time on the actual film.
Best? Probably Notting Hill, which was good in spite of, not because of, her.

Smoochie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

Can't let Meg Ryan out of the box. Too much Botox. Head won't fit. Heigl is an arrogant, hypocritical, potty mouth. No love. Don't care one way or the other about Julia. Don't worship celebs (except Alec Baldwin, it's a bed bug).

Andie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:09 AM EST

I never got all of the hype about Julia Roberts...although I don't hate her I don't really care about her and I don't think I've ever seen one of her movies in the theater. (Seriously!) I find her a bit overrated as an actress and I can't STAND her horsey laugh, but I don't hate her. I think I'd respect her more if she did just retire and raise her kids, but I doubt that'll happen.

So...does that make me lukewarm?

Cyndyg Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:00 AM EST

I don't like or dislike celebs, because I don't know them. I appreciate Julia for attempting to live a normal life and trying to persue a career that she likes. She does not appear to take her celebrity as a sign that she is some type of superior being, and ram her political or other views down our throats.(Erhumtomcruise)

no name Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:54 AM EST

wow. so many people posting here about not liking her. and yet they are the same ones who line up to see her movies. hypocrites!!! i've always like her and have always been a fan of her work good and bad.

Nancy Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:28 AM EST

I like her,,,,maybe cause she is worth alot of money,,,jealous people.

BrandonK Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:56 PM EST

Woo, who knew there was so much anti-Julia sentiment out there? I was thinking of something that I want to point out. She became incredibly famous when she was really young, and we've seen enough young starlets acting out to know how that can go. I think she can be excused her youthful mistakes, like the Keifer Sutherland thing and marrying Lyle Lovett. As for stealing Danny Moder, it seems pretty clear he wasn't in a good relationship. You can't "steal" someone who is in love with his or her mate. There are worse things that she could have done, if you ask me.

Marci Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:53 PM EST

Codi, you can write in caps all you want, but it's not gonna change anyone's opinion of Julia. So please don't because it's annoying.

BrandonK Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:44 PM EST

I like her. I think she's matured very gracefully, given her environment and her success. She seems like she's gotten a lot of wisdom out of her life, and she comes across as grounded. Also, I don't care what anybody says, I like the names Hazel and Phineas.

Echoing Ashley Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

Ah, got it: "I have a wide stance."

Echoing Ashley Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:10 PM EST

Yeah, what the heck is Brad Pitt saying?

codi Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM EST

All these negative comments. You don't know her. You don't know what the hell she is like on a personal level. it makes me laugh. She has more charm and charisma than all of you haters put together. I think she is very pretty. Some people say she has big teeth. Have you seen supermodels lately? They have bigger teeth then Julia. I know plenty of straight guys, young and old who think Julia is pretty. My favorite movies are MYSTIC PIZZA, STEEL MAGNOLIA'S,PRETTY WOMAN,FLATLINERS,SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY,THE PELICAN BRIEF,MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING,EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU,NOTTING HILL, RUNAWAY BRIDE, ERIN BROCKOVICH,OCEAN'S ELEVEN,CLOSER and many more to come. OH, YEAH MOST OF THOSE MOVIES MADE OVER 100 MILLION DOMESTICALLY. THAT IS WHY THE PRESS LOVE HER. AT LEAST SHE IS WORTH THE HYPE.jULIA IS THE ACTRESS OF HER GENERATION. SHE IS A MOVIE STAR IN EVERY SENCE OF THE WORD.JULIA IS MY FAVORITE ACTRESS EVER. A GREAT ONE TOO. SHE COULD ACT CIRCLES AROUND YOU PEOPLE ANY DAY.

VicsBoxers Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM EST

> She was good in Mystic Pizza ('88), damaged & jiggly.
> I liked her with Nick Nolte in I Love Trouble ('94) a fun action/romance.
> Conspiracy Theory ('97) w/ The Mel was entertaining. She does "I don't believe you" and "imminent peril" well.
> EB was okay because EB is an interesting person - The real EB, not the actress who played her.
> I stopped following her personal life after she dumped Lyle Lovett - when I realized she was going to be one of those! - a "multi-marriage, publicist driven, pretend to save the environment, h-wood starlet".

sam Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:01 PM EST

I like her--although she is not always a great actress, in the right part she can be very entertaining. And I like her personality. She seems very real and she also seems to be enjoying motherhood so much.

Laura Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

Oddly, I don't mind Julia Roberts - it's Natalie Portman that I can't stand.

Anon Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:41 PM EST

Meh. I can't seem to muster any emotion about her at all. Certainly nothing as dramatic as hate. I think she is a poster child for flash over substance- the fact that she has pulled a little substance out of her bag of tricks could explain why I have given her a pass-- unlike Nut-Job Cruise. However I do think it would be a good idea for actors to stop televising their mutual congratulation/aren't we all just fabulous award parties. Frankly they all seemed insufferable and I find that reality a little distracting when I'm sitting in a theatre.

Jane Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:23 PM EST

Used to love her, but haven't for the longest time. She's just everywhere, and that gets old.

Jennifer Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:45 PM EST

Definitely cold camp. I have never understood the fuss over her and was totally bewildered by the Oscar for Erin Brockovich. I suspect as she gets older you'll see less and less of her; the only "mature" women that have any staying power in Hollywood are the ones with real talent.

Ashley Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:03 PM EST

What is Brad Pitt saying?

Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 08:00 PM EST

She's never made a good movie (IMO). I cannot stand her. Her worst movie that I've seen is probably Runaway Bride.

Cyn Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

I haven't liked her since she 'dumped' Kiefer Sutherland at the altar and ran away with his friend Jason Patric (classless). Years later she follows this up with breaking up a marriage to nab her present husband Danny Moder - In a nutshell - She's a skanky whore!

Mike Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:50 PM EST

I'll contunue the trend. I was a fan early on. But, between the cookie cutter roles and BIG ego, not so much. She was good in Closer and has had the good sense to stay away, lately.
It will be interesting to see the results of Charley Wilson's War. Julia and Tom Hanks aren't the stars they once were. Films about foreign wars have tanked big time.

Liz Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

Why the heck is she being honored anyway? Her films are a flimsy, trifle collection of fluff.

Surely there were more worthy actors to honor who have actually been in movies other than 'Pretty Woman', 'Sleeping with the Enemy' and the like. It's a pretty sad state of affairs in Hollywood these days.

Also - Miss Julia is not aging gracefully, she looks horrible lately, please get off my screen.

Annette Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

Don't like her, she's a big fat phony
and, You'd think she was also the only mom on earth: you had kids, we know already.

I have also always hated her fake hee haw guffawing phony laugh - she never chuckles or giggles, just that big ol heaving guffaw of hers, yuck.

Hopefully, after 'Charlie Wilson's War' flops, that will be the last we have to hear about or see of her forever!

Jeremy Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

I've never liked her either. Always over-rated. And some people think she's really physically attractive, but she's never done anything for me.

cdrivanova Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

Cold camp right here. Don't like her, have never liked her. Many people have already brought up her Oscar hogging when Denzel W. won his Oscar ... so inappropriate. I admire that she wants to be a stay-at-home mom, but then do it: stay at home. Don't clutter up the airwaves with paparazzi bashing or another interview about whatever. Stay. At. Home.
D., I like your comment about JR being like mac'n'cheese. So appropos!

Martha Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

I like her. She's not the best actress ever, but most of her movies are enjoyable and she doesn't come across as a complete weird-oid when she does interviews. Her new role in "Charlie Wilson's War" looks intriguing, and how can you not like her voice performance in "Charlotte's Web"? Not liking that is like un-American or something. ;-) By the way, nice to see you blogging again, Whittlz - more, more!

Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

I think she is an incredibly talented and funny lady. I make it a point to see every movie she has ever been in and I look forward to seeing her on the big screen again.

jennab Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

Looks HORRIBLE in Charlie Wilson's War!! Agree with other posters, has never given a relaxed, natural, authentic performance. Always "stagy." Still, undeniably charming...however faux. Funny, Reese Witherspoon is annoying for the same reasons!

Hallie Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

I never minded her until she bombed "Three Days of Rain" on Broadway. After that I've always pictured her as a small yappy dog: Kind cute and charming, until she opens her mouth.

BilliamE Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

Obviously people that like her don't like her enough to comment. She must really strike a bad note with a lot of you. I like her and I do think she's charming and funny. I do agree though that she's not the most talented actress, but she is definitely an icon of the silver screen. There aren't many actresses nowadays that you know people will remember 30 years from now. Julia Roberts' body of work will, I'm sure, stand the test of time. Who will know who Gwyneth Paltrow or Diane Lane are 30 years from now? Only die hard cinema-philes, I'm afraid...

Ho-ho-ho Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:22 PM EST

Dana (below) said she was humble?Humble??????????? LOL Humble???????????????????????

Samsara Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

Julia is just "OK". She's the same character in every movie - it's boring. And, she does this weird whisper talk that bugs the heck out of me - like nails on a chalk board. And, what about when she's on Oprah?! The two of them just gush all over each other - barf!

paige Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

she's ok. i personally dont like her but she was really good in Closer and Erin Brockovich but she did not deserve an Oscar for it- that year completely belonged to Ellen Burstyn for Requiem for a Dream.

Laura Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:33 PM EST

Wow, it's wonderful to see so many other haters out there! I completely agree with everything the cold side is saying, especially about her being a terrible actress who can only play one role, herself.

D. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:31 PM EST

I think the problem with Julia Roberts is that I don't mind her. Her movies are like the box of mac 'n cheese in my cabinet - I don't go in there looking specifically for mac 'n cheese, but I don't mind eating it and I know what to expect.

Liza Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:30 PM EST

I can't stand her. I don't understand why the media is so positive about her. She's treated many people like total crap yet gets away with it. She comes across as oh so fake in her interviews. I like some of her movies, but she is nothing better than mediocre.

I'd rather have her in the box where they keep Meg Ryan and let Meg Ryan out of it.

Marci Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

To Patty:

I totally agree about the Katherine Heigl remark. I can't stand her either. She seems so smug (and unappreciative of her success).

Patty Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

Beware - the media is creating the new Julia Roberts even as we read this. It is Katherine Heigl. They keep telling us she is beautiful and talented - um, no not really. Do not get sucked into this star making vortex!

Jennifer Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:47 PM EST

Don't like her don't like her don't like her. I got put off a few years ago when I heard something about how she was so wonderful for rescuing homeless animals, then saw an interview where she was talking about how her dog was pregnant and she didn't know who the 'dad' was - So your dog isn't fixed, and you apparently just let her roam around freely? Yeah, you're the champion of helping homeless animals, Julia.

Also, I get tired of her talking about how she's just a small-town girl from little ol' Smyrna, Georgia. Smyrna is on the outskirts of Atlanta. It's a frickin' city, not some one-red-light-&-a-general-store blip on the map.
Oh, and I'm 100% with the poster who brought up that interview she just did about how her dream is to be a stay-at-home mom. Uh... Is there something stopping you, Julia? Last I heard you could afford to that. Are you just waiting until you fall in love with another married man and be a stay-at-home mom to his kids, too?

Tri Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:46 PM EST

I think her success makes her deserving of all the hype that she's recieved. While she can be annoying at times, she's provided me with several unforgettable gems (EB, My Best Friend's Wedding, Pretty Woman, Closer) so enough with all the hating. Besides, nothing wrong with being a mom.

Chris Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

Love her.
Best film: Closer. She seemed like she was finally willing to act her age and take a role that made us question her motives and morality.

Worst film: Notting Hill. Eww, garbage story, with a throwaway performance.

Allison Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:43 PM EST

I'm with the cold side. I can't stand her. Someone says she's irrelevant, and I think that's right on the mark. She broke up a home (her husband was married when they met on the set of her movie--she was the angelina jolie before there was an angelina jolie, whom I hate as well). she gets by with a big smile and a loud laugh. Well guess what, I have a huge smile and an even bigger laugh. Where are my accolades? Oh right, I don't get them b/c I'm just a 9th grade English teacher. Whatever, I hate her.

AD Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:41 PM EST

Hate her! So glad to finally find out I'm not alone. So irritating!

Logan the Huge Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

i'm one of the cold ones also. julia seems to try too hard to be "real" when in fact she just comes off as a faker. now she makes everything about being a mom, so i can only imagine how lame the breast milk joke with be. whitney, you are sort of cruel for calling those of us who don't like julia "cold". that's harsh. she's a mediocre-to-bad actress. bleh.

Logan the Huge Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

Lena Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

I've always liked Julia (though Runaway Bride and Notting Hill were bleck). But has she done lately to even warrant a conversation? She's just a mommy (which is fine) who used to do a lot of popular movies. Irrelevant seems too strong a word, but maybe not.

nunya Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

I actually find her kind of charming someimes and i'm glad she isn't one of those hollywood women who always has to skank it up or shove sex appeal in people's faces. That being said, her only downfall is that she is STUNNINGLY MEDIOCRE as an an actress. I mean she has not given one performance (and yes, I include 'Erin Brockovich') where she has been authentic, natural or effortless. It always comes off as -- 'there's Julia Roberts acting right in front of me.' And I refuse to believe the whole "movie stars are just too big for characters". Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Russel Crowe, Will Smith ('pursuit of happyness'), Jodie Foster and Meryl Streep are each HUGE MOVIE STARS who routinely exhibit natural, breath-taking and nuanced character work in films. Unfortunately, I don't think Julia ever has or ever will. :(

JillyRo Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

Someone said it best on here - it's
the media who HYPED Julia to no end, with the America's sweetheart title! That's SO true, because if I ask any of my friends, male or female, NOT ONE find her attractive and all find her overrated (my hubby finds she looks like a duck).

BC Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

No problem with Julia Roberts on film, but as a human being she seems to be pretty lame (or at least the kind of filth who steals handicapped parking spaces per pictures of her doing that).

BB Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

Very likable in her movies. Started to bug me to no end after "My Best Friends Wedding." I just get the feeling she believes her own hype.

La La Love You Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

Can't stand and I'm sure I'd find whatever fauxly self-deprecating thing she said about breast milk (my how SHOCKING. She mentioned breastmilk. EDGY! She is WILD!) to be idiotic. I think every word that comes out of her mouth in public is 100% phony.

donner Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

I'm in the 'can't stand' camp and I'm suprised I'm not alone..i thought everyone LOVED her...I find that she plays the SAME character in every movie...sassy, charming, looking for love, and in the end she finds it...formulaic...In real life she seems to be full of herself (at the Oscars, she says "I love my life" when she announces Denzel for best actor, over Russell Crowe who she despises - Julia honey, the Oscars isn't about YOU!)...I wish she'd go back to taking care of her kids for the next 10 years...do us all a favor and go away...Mona Lisa Smile proved you aren't Box Office Gold any longer...ugh...

Ben Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

Julia Roberts is to acting what vomit is to food. She is the female equivalent of Steven Seagal.

Joe C Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:49 PM EST

Wow! Lot's of hating for Julia going here! I guess it's just Whitney, Dana, Stephen and I who will be watching tonight. I USED to think she was overrated, but some of you haters should give her another chance. Oh well!

Joe C Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

Count me as a fan. I really think she's a good actress. Fave roles from her: 'Pretty Woman'(of course!)'Erin Brokovitch'(I know I mispelled that) 'My Best Friend's Wedding'. But my fave from her is a little gem called 'Something to Talk About'. It's set in a small town, and at one point she stands up in a town meeting and yells: 'I have a right to know! Who's bleeping my husband?!?!?!!?!!? Classic! I will be watching tonight!

Rosie Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

She's undeniably charming--that laugh, that smile... Not the most gorgeos woman in the world, but she's infectiously warm onscreen. Not my fave actress, again, but I really can't deny her place in Hollywood.

dave-o Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

ive never understood her "secks" appeal much, but i thought she was good in EB, Pelican Brief, and steel magnolias. she is what i would consider overhyped by the media, but not overrated by the people because everyone i know doesnt seem to rate her that high. there is a certain percentage of the female population that loves all things "pretty woman" and/or "my best friends wedding". those people scare me more than julia ever will.

Ben Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

I like Beyonce as a singer and performer... as an actress... meh.

Jill Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

She's OK. I don't see the "highest-paid actress" appeal but at least she's been low-key lately and seems to be a good mom and wife.

Ben Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:28 PM EST

Can't stand the woman. Only see movies she's in if I like the other people in them. She's on my desert island along with Nic Cage and Meg Ryan. Worst film of her "acting": Mary Reilly. Worst film of her gafawing, America's Sweetheart bs: Runaway Bride. She can go away.

Court Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

I guess I'm one of the cold people too. I have never liked any of her movies; other than Erin Brokovich and the Ocean's films, she mostly does formulaic, trite rom-coms, with a few exceptions here and there. Not that there's anything wrong with rom-coms, but I just don't see her being more talented or appealing than 1,000 other actresses out there. I also find her pretentious and aloof in real life, as well. I'd much rather watch Debra Messing, Diane Lane, or Catherine Keener, just to name a few in her same age bracket.

j.fo Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

I've never gotten her. I don't think she's beautiful (and don't know any man who does) and she doesn't have much talent to speak of. But it's her smugness, her spotlight-hogging, her "I'm just like you proles out there (except i'm rich and famous)" attitude. Her recent wish to be a stay-at-home mom and do needlepoint is a perfect example. Who's stopping you? You haven't amassed enough $$ to never work again? Ugh. She ticks me off. I am proud to be cold!

AA Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

Oh, and Whit? I hope it's the holiday spirit that's overtaken you and that you haven't permanently lost your edge. Love your writing, but now I have this picture in my mind that you lurv Julia Roberts. Double ugh. I second Ames: bring back your chart flashbacks!!

Steph Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

I like her, and anytime she does something kinda irritating I give her a pass because of the movie "Satisfaction" (with Mallory from Family Ties) - which is a total guilty pleasure and was before she got so famous.

JillyRo Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

Don't mind her in the movies, but find her full of herself and smug in real life. Anytime she's at any event, even when others are being presented (like Denzel or George), it's all about her, she's all "look at me, I have lots of FAMOUS friends, I'm so important and loved, look at me!!". Go away Julia.

I actually got an anti-Julia Roberts letter published in EW a couple years ago in response to the "Who's the Next Julia Roberts" cover story, so I guess I should respond to this. Apparently I'm one of those cold people. But the thing is, I've always found HER cold. Obviously I can't speak to her character; she may be a very nice person. But she's never seemed genuine to me in any of her roles. In every interview, she seems aloof. And, well, there are much, much better actresses out there who have movie-star charm to spare...Natalie Portman, Ellen Page, Diane Lane, etc. Roberts isn't as talented or nearly as charming...she's like a vaguely unlikable aunt who hates coming to visit.

Sara Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

Not only was she super-annoying when presenting the Oscar to Denzel, but I blanched when she told the "stick man" to stop playing the music during her own acceptance speech, because she had waited so long for that win. Why is her winning so much more important than anyone else winning?

BLM Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

Julia's an annoying hag! She's completely dupped the majority of America--everyone seems to love her. I think she's a pretentious kiss-ass who charms the right people while walking all over the little people (not to mention parking in handicap parking spots). But, thankfully, she's seen less and less every year.

Mark Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

I have never seen her give a performance where she seemed like a genuine person instead of an actor. She's like Tom Cruise in that respect. Every popular bad actor I can think of has turned in at least one decent performance. In her case I'm drawing a blank.

Ms Daisy Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

Overrated and overpaid.

Ames Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

Whitney! I was beginning to think you didn't work there anymore. Where are your top-ten lists from way back when? I love those.

Now to Julia Roberts, I usually can't stand skinny women (out of pure jealousy) so the fact that I like Julia must really mean something.

VicsBoxers Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

Talented actor. The talent ends there. All of her guests (listed above) are part of the left-wing, liberal, lunatic, clinton-loving glitter-atchek. Oh Wilbur!

Jeanne Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

She plays herself in nearly every movie, and when she tries to play someone else she fails miserably. Unfortunately "herself" is a person I do not like. She is smug beyond all measure and incredibly self-centered (witness the way she managed to make Denzel Washington's Oscar win all about her.) She is highly overrated and not nearly as attractive as she is made out to be, I seriously do not know a single man who thinks she's at all attractive. In short, I am apparently one of those "cold" people who do not like her. I hope she does retire to raise her children like she said she was going to. I did not miss her at all when she went away.

Zod Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

The one thing I noticed about Julia Roberts that really bugs me is when she's presenting an award for someone else, somehow she always has to be the center of attention. Example: presenting Denzel Washington with his Oscar. She was right up there, in the middle of it, looking sort of smug, like *she* was giving it to him, and you could tell she loved the attention.

Other than that, I enjoy some of her movies. She was kind of dumb in Mary Reilly..."There was bluuud, on the walls!" But all in all, she's a decent actress.

Britt Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

I used to like her til I read her interviews. Man is she an arrogant wench. I can't stand her now or her movies. I guess I'm cold :P

AA Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

Don't hate her but don't like her. Not sure where that puts me. Don't care? I'm one of the few that liked Oceans 12 and liked her in it. Think Pretty Woman is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overrated. Hooker with a heart of gold? Ugh.

Anna Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

(sorry for the rambling post) I guess I don't hate her as much as other pretentious celebs like Beyonce because she does have Erin B in her arsenal

Tom Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

I can't stand her, and the moment I realized it was Ocean's 12. Smug.

Ceballos Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

I was one of those people that used to hate on her consistently because I never believed she was worthy of basically being known as the top actress of her generation, so I resented her for that.

Eventually I grew up and realized that "top star" didn't mean "top actress" and I eased off a bit. I mean, even Julia lovers will conceded there are actressed out there who are WAY more talented.

Now I can appreciate her for what she is. She's a reasonably talented actress (I've enjoyed her work in Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich, Closer, and a few others) who makes really smart choices, turns in consistent and sometimes very good performances, and mostly stays out of trouble. She's basically George Clooney or a pre-meltdown Tom Cruise.

Anna Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

I've never been a fan and find her grating and odd looking. I don't get this sweetheart thing but maybe I'm not the right age (25) to have gotten to know her when she was younger. That said, I do not mind that she's famous and successful like I do about other actors I don't like. I think she has earned her spot and isn't as bad as a Meg Ryan. I just hate it when she pops into movies I want to watch like the Ocean's movies, etc. She's grating - eck!

Dana Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

She is a great actress and very humble

Loved her ever since I saw her in Pretty Woman.

Marci Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

I can't stand Julia Roberts. I find her to be one of the most self-absorbed and pretentious celebrities alive today. If no one ever talked about her again (and quite honestly, I think we're nearing that point), then I would be extremely happy.

Stephen Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

I love her. If you wonder why, here's a snippet from Erin Brockovich:
Teresa: "I think we got off on the wrong foot."
Julia/Erin: "That's all you got, lady. Two wrong feet an d f***ing ugly shoes."

Gabi Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

I don't know about America's Sweetheart, but Erin Brockovich is definitely one of my favorite movies and Julia's pretty awesome in it.

Jim Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

I'm one of those cold people you mentioned. I just don't see the appeal.
