Is Josh Groban in league with the Prince of Darkness?

Dec 19, 2007, 02:32 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: Music, Ouch! That was my ear!, Religion, Strange Bedfellows

Joshdevil_l And the biggest-selling CD of 2007 is...get ready...Josh Groban's Noël?! Yep, the adult-contemporary milquetoast outsold everyone else this year — and what's more, his inexplicable megasmash landed at number one on Billboard's albums chart again this week, which also makes it the first-ever Christmas album to top the chart for four straight weeks. Yeesh. High School Musical 2 would have been a way less embarrassing year-end champ.

How can this be? How on earth has Groban's latest beverage-coaster managed to defy the CD market's downward spiral? Well, let me put it this way. EW’s Chris Willman happened to notice that the thoroughly lame Noël sold exactly 669,000 CDs this week. That's just one inverted digit away from, you guessed it, 666,000. As Dana Carvey’s Church Lady might say: Could Groban's sales secret be...Satan?

I know some of you may think this is a bit of a stretch. But I’m standing behind this as the most important supernatural pop-culture revelation since PopWatch's Jason Adams found Rachael Ray’s cookbooks in the “Occult” section (speaking of which, she's been doing pretty well for herself this week, too!) and/or that guy on YouTube “proved” that all my favorite rappers were working for the infernal Illuminati. Who dares to disagree?

This was a funny article, josh said so himself. being a grobanite, i encourage other grobanites to THANK simon--yes thank him--for giving Josh more publicity and giving us Grobanites a chance to show our man some love.

And I don't think that Simon would actually think that Josh has something to do w/ Satan. My 4 yr. old cousin wouldn't say something like this. So enless this man is completely unintelligent.. wow I don't even know what else to say except that this stupid post made me roll my eyes 360 degrees! And his music isn't overproduced.. in fact I think he deserves a lot more recognition for his work. And again.. some people really need to calm themselves down. I think Josh is a smart intelligent talented man.. he can take care of himself. I know I've said this millions of times.. but this article shouldn't have been posted in the first place. I have a great sense of humour and I love jokes and sarcasm but this didn't seem funny at all!!!!

Nikki Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

I'm not sure if this Simon man meant for this post to be sarcastic, a joke or actual critisim to Josh.. but, I have to agree that the part about the Noel cd being a beverage coaster is going too far. On the other hand, I think that some people took this a bit too seriously. It's true, that Josh has a sense of humour so he may have been laughing about this.. or maybe not - I really don't know. I completely disagree about how Oprah and her friend made Josh famous. Completely not true!! At all! Josh would be successful without Oprah! Why is there all this fuss about the Jewish thing? Does it actually matter? I have to say that people can't be offended if others say that they're just not into Josh's music.. not everyone has the same tastes! And grobanites aren't "scary fans". But I do agree that "Simon" shouldn't have posted this in the first place. If it was meaning to be funny.. it really wasn't!! Honestly. And why is Britney being dragged into this? I would personally be defending Britney like I'm somwhat defending Josh right now, if this was about Britney Spears. She's going through a terrible time right now, and its useless to drag her into this. Now I must say that I'm a huge Josh groban fan. And I own Noel. It's amazing. And it's not ironic that he outbeat high school music.. and its definitely not embarassing.

I am a Josh Groban fan and I must say I laughed my ass off at this article. I agree some of us are a bit over protective of him...but damnit I can laugh!

Jerusha359 Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 06:28 AM EST

Reading December's comments about Josh Groban's Noel, I was disappointed by the standard of comments. Forgive me but a joke is supposed to be funny! Right?
Whatever your taste in music and there is plenty to choose from, why are people so unkind when an artist produces something which is hopefully for their fans to enjoy - why do some find delight in rubbishing not only the cd but the artist too!
The most offensive of all is the way people disregard the feelings of others by making snide remarks about those who have a faith in God or using God's name in a blasphemous way. I don't need to defend the Almighty, He's quite capable of doing that himself, but woe betide those who don't take heed, we're all going to have to give an account of ourselves whether you believe or not.
There is so much rudeness and unkindness in this world today. My advice is, if you can't find something nice or positive to say about something or someone, keep it to yourself (PLEASE)!

Hadassah Tue, Dec 25, 2007 at 11:23 PM EST

#1 - A significant portion of the Grobanites are way too sensitive when it comes to Josh Groban or anyone who offends his music, image or status. If you want some proof of that...just go to JG.com and post something a bit negative about him...and watch them go to town on your post.
#2 - Who gives two Sh**s if he is in league with the devil or not...at least 3/4 of society is...the ten commandments are a thing of the past...and they sure aren't followed to the "T" by members of society.
#3 - Josh is NOT Jewish...his mother isn't Jewish...according to Jewish Law the mother has to be Jewish for the children to be considered Jewish...more so, Josh's father converted from Judaism to Protestantism upon marriage to Josh's mother.
#4 - He is musically talented, but not the greatest artist of all time...perhaps with greater experience and time in the industry he will reach that level...truth is...he is only 26 years old...it takes quite some time to build your image / status.

i just sat here and read through every single response to this and cannot get OVER how mean you all are to Simon. Are you all NEW to EW? I mean give me a break! He was making a joke, and everyone is acting so serious. Everyone responds with 'to all you Josh haters'-- when NO one is hating! Every poster is PRO-JOSH and anti-Simon! Poor Simon!
Simon, i thought the post was hysterical and LOL'd, and i am a JOSH GROBAN FAN. So everyone take a fu**ing chill pill! Jeeeesus. This is hysterical!
EW readers, seriously, what has happened to you lately?

Pat Weaver Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 02:48 AM EST

Groban would indeed think this article was hilarious. The reviewer is pretty funny - just not a great music reviewer. Dude, get a clue - you work for EW, not Blender or even Rolling Stone. It's too late to shoot for hipness, but you tried. Still, can't quite disguise the fact you don't appear to know what the f_ you're talking about.

Josh "Lucifer" Grobanstopheles Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

I think all these insane, no sense of humor-having commenters are in league with Satan.
But that's just my 666 cents, y'all

Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

Emoney, I think you'd be surprised how few of the people posting here are Grobanites. Folks just don't like to see tasteless jokes made at the expense of someone like Josh who deserves his success and has had to deal with stupidity like this his whole career. The media doesn't want to take him seriously for some reason, but the public is ready. He's a sweet boy with more talent in his little finger than all the rest of us put together, and the media doesn't want to acknowledge it. Satire aside, this article was more than a little insulting to the buying public that has finally found someone worthy of their money. That's where the "vitriol" came from, not a need to defend Josh. This article didn't sound like a joke as much as it did a snide attack on the public buying the CD. We can't possible be smart enough to know what we like, now can we? Josh has to be in league with the devil, that's the only explanation! Sometimes satire bites back if it's in poor taste.

Emoney Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 09:35 AM EST

Lovey, I never said anything bad about young Mr. Groban. I'm not a particular fan, but that doesn't mean I think he's untalented. It's just not my preferred style of music. I did, however, pick on the Grobanites. I get being a big fan of an artist, but the vitriol you guys have been spewing over a joke seems a little much. That's all.

lovey Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:07 AM EST

Ben, ya dope! Learn to spell ...."shrewed"??? ....do you mean SHREWD?

Also Cranky and Emoney and some others who I've (thankfully) forgotten your 'names'.....you have some serious problems if you cannot appreciate the voice of a prodigy like Josh...he is, like, the Mozart or Beethoven or Chopin....well, you get my drift....he is THE VIRTUOSO of OUR TIMES...

and we are all so lucky to have him in our lives.

Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:51 AM EST

I'm not a fan of Mr. Groban at all. But I felt compelled to comment given this tasteless, poorly written, cliche piece Mr. Vozick-Levinson considers suitable to put before the masses. Please. I realize that EW's readership would hardly be considered among the elite, but could he not have at least some class and professional pride? Or is EW hiring tweens to write for their publications...? If this author was reaching for humor, then he has fallen sorely short.

Gary Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:43 PM EST

You should listen to the CD. Your attempt at humor or whatever you are attempting, falls very flat here. Josh is an amazing singer and Noel is the best Christmas CD in years, as sales are proving. There is no doubt that he will be selling a lot of CD's and selling out concerts long after people have stopped reading your poorly written pieces.

Tami Cook A New Josh Fan! Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 10:56 PM EST

Hey! Josh Groban is truly a GODSEND! His voice is beautiful and he is right up there on my top faves w/ Michael Jackson and Shaun Cassidy!! His success is well earned and I will buy is BEAUTIFUL CD!! I'm a new fan!! Yeah, u guys are just jealous!!

Keesha Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 05:08 PM EST

I truly think that you are jealous that you have to do things like this for a living, whereas Josh has a true talent! I have Noel and listen to it everyday, the man is young and talented. Don't hate just congratulate...

Johnny Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Josh is a wonderful singer and seems very humble. His record received a huge sales boost when he became one of Oprah's favorite gifts this month. He performed on her show last week when she did her annual Favorite Things episode. His sales are a combination of the power of Oprah and the power of Josh's voice. The above entry by EW was very silly. His sales record should be applauded, not made fun of or dissed or compared to Satan.

Jennifer Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

Finally the world has been given someone who can actually SING.I think people are so tired and fed up with the crap that being put out today by the music industry. Most of the so called singers today can't carry a tune in candle snuff,it's just a bunch of coughing, sneezing, whizzing, sreaming Noise! The people have spoken, misic industry are you listening?Thank you God for such sweet relief from all the noise and racket of this stuff they call music today. If you read this Josh, thank you, thank you, thank you.You totally rock!

I can't believe this... Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

Who the heck do you think you are, writing this garbage? Oh and for the people that say you hate Josh's music or whatever...I pity you, your shriveled up from rap-crap brain and your bleeding ears. Try listening to some real music and attempt at gaining an appreciation for it. Good start: Josh Groban.

Who would have thought that there were so many people in the world with such good taste.Thank you Josh for a beautiful cd.Merry Christmas to you and yours.

WC Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

I think all these sites that get no traffic have caught on to the fact that Josh is a draw. Not just Grobanites any longer ... but us regular folks just enjoying some beautiful & motivational music for a change. Think you could get this many posts for your usual drivel? Yeah, I'm guessing no. Enjoy riding on Josh's coattails while you can Simon because tomorrow it's back to EW and Simon who?

rodlang Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

Be as snarky as you want but Groban is popular because he is a once in a generation talent...an amazing vocal talent and he comes across as a very nice guy. He's not sloppy drunk or walking around the streets in his underwear. And the guy is getting the last laugh at the bank.

To Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

Sorry, but Mensa disagrees with you. Mwahahahahahaha! (Sorry, I couldn't resist one last evil cackle.)

bud Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Amazing, someone who can actually SING, has the number 1 album of the year and then gets lambasted by somebody (does anybody really know who this guy is?) trying to be witty. The "author" of this popwatch should be let go, on Christmas Eve.

to Genius Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

I believe your name loses credit when you use words like smarts, haters, and mwahaha.

jo Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

Hey Simon, your writing has just been elevated to fish wrapper status ... that's a notch up for you.

char Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:08 PM EST

His cd sells because of his target audience. They're not the type who would go illegally download the album. This is the same reason why High School Musical sells too. Parents are willing to spend the $15 for an actual cd.

Discerning Ear Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

Who cares what this taste-lacking phony thinks? He can write all the drivel he wants, but the fact remains that Josh Groban is clearly one of the best singers the music industry has ever seen. He has unfortunately been underrated for much of his career, but thanks to this Christmas CD, he is now starting to get the recognition he deserves. It won't be long before he is a household name like Celine Dion or Barbara Streisand, and raking in the cash the way they are.

The ironic thing about this tactless and ridiculous PopWatch post is that it is actually giving Josh more publicity and more recognition - an unintended consequence, eh, Simon Vozick-Levinson?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Genius Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

Okay, HOW can anyone say his music is over-produced? You want overproduced, listen to 50 cent, Kanyae West, Justin Timberlake, Ashlee Simpson, Britney Spears, etc., etc., etc. If anything, Josh is UNDER produced. His voice carries itself. What is wrong with having a wonderful orchestra on one's album?

And Josh isn't Jewish, not that it matters, but he isn't.

Of course not everybody is going to like this style of music, but those who cannot recognize his talent need to get their ears or head (or both) examined. People who say mean things about him are just jealous, because not only does he have, like, THE best voice in the history of ever, he's also got smarts, a great personality, and a great family supporting him, unlike most "tortured-soul" entertainers.

Josh has a record-breaking #1 CD. Deal with it, haters! Mwahahahaha!

Kent Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

this guy is a great singer, but his music is totally over-produced crap. I listened to this on itunes and i couldn't believe people actually want to sit and listen to it.

Kent Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

this guy is a great singer, but his music is totally over-produced crap. I listened to this on itunes and i couldn't believe people actually want to sit and listen to it.

June Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Silly people, Josh isn't Jewish! In order to be Jewish, his mother would have to be Jewish (She's not!). Josh Groban has said repeatedly that he has wonderful memories of these Christmas songs playing in his house as he was growing up. This CD will be a classic for years to come.

JF Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

Satan? Even Satan would have to admit that God did a great job on Josh Groban. Not only does Josh have one of the most beautiful voices ever, but he's also kind, humble, sweet, good looking and he has a great sense of humor. Josh would probably get a good laugh from this article. He can afford to laugh since he has the best selling CD and legions of dedicated fans. He makes beautiful music that sells without all the scandal of other so-called "artists". Now THAT is amazing! GO JOSH!

Ben Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

Are Josh Groban and Clay Aiken linked somehow with middle American married women?

Abrams Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

Someone posted about Josh being Jewish and singing Christmas music. If he were (and I don't care), why would he make a Christmas cd except to make a buck? Like when Barbra Streisand makes a Christmas cd, it's hard for me to accept it as she's singing about something she doesn't believe in.

Ben Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

Josh has a decent enough voice, but he is not as talented as he is given praise for by people. His voice doesn't make me swoon (and I swoon for good singers). He was schrewed and made a Christmas CD knowing people would lap it up, and since he has Oprah's approval and people who watch her seem to be lemmings, so I was not surprised that it sold. In league with the devil? Probably not, but still not worth the hype.

Emoney Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

Toldya, Simon. The Grobanites are scary superfans and cannot take a joke. Everyone, in Simon's defense, he probably doesn't REALLY believe that Josh Groban is in league with Satan. So let's all just settle down.

LB Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

666 and Satan? C'mon, grow up! This is a sad attempt at cleverness to disparage an artist you don't want to promote. Whatever happened to impartiality and open-mindedness in journalism? Oh, I forgot, this is a stupid hack review, not journalism - my mistake!

It's sad that all the people commenting on entertainment/music work for huge organizations that also own the record companies putting out the pure crap we are expected to buy. Most of the articles and reviews these days are nothing but advertisements for the junk they want to sell us and has nothing to do with what the general public finds worthy of their money. The fact that Josh Groban has sold so many CDs proves that the public knows what they want, and it isn't what these companies are shoving down our throats. Viva Josh! You go, Honey! The non-sheep of the world are behind you all the way. Yeah, his music isn't indie rock, but a little variety in what you listen to doesn't hurt anyone.

Merry Christmas Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:31 AM EST

I dobut that you've actually heard the album, Simon. Josh is an amazingly talented singer, and anyone who would use his CD for a beverage coaster is not sophisticated enough to appreciate his talent.

Krisz Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

LOOOOL. Dude... omg, funny pic. Actually... HOT pic!!!!
Yeah, some call it cheesy, some call it... inspired. Some call something dissonant, others call it post-modern.
So, yes, Josh Groban outsold everybody this year. I'll say, YEEHAW!!! One of the best voices to be born onto this earth, one of the kindest, sweetest, funniest and most modest/sensitive artists ever, with a healthy family background, a healthy attitude towards fame, fans, relationships and the world in general, not a saint, but not a sh*t-stirrer either, who is generally idolised by teens, moms, grandmas, gay men, straight men, singles, couples, dads, husbands, EVERYONE. No wonder he outsold all other albums. DUH?!
He would SO get a kick out of this silly article, and knowing his wicked sense of humour, he'd laugh his perfect curls off his head. :)
Josh Groban rocks, whatever anyone says. :)

sje Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:17 AM EST

Way to feel the Xmas spirit, commenters. I happen to <3 Josh Groban and do, in fact, own Noel. I understand that some people find him lame, but he has a lovely voice and it's nice, at the holidays, to have comforting music - like being wrapped in a blanket and drinking hot cocoa. Also, although I have never listened to HSM 2, I have no doubt that it is cr*p and am DELIGHTED that the buying power of tween girls has been defeated.

Cranky Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

Good grief, y'all. It's not like this writer is out punching mall Santas or sauteeing reindeer filets. He's just poking fun at a guy with a pretty voice and prettier hair who sings sentimental ballads that are just a smidge bit cheesy. I think his point is that a pleasant but overproduced Christmas CD is not the best music to come out of 2007, therefore it's ironic that it was the top seller. Just take a deep breath and stir something relaxing into your eggnog.

jg Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:07 AM EST

Your article is so ignorant, dude.... Josh Groban is the most talented artist to finally show his stuff! He has been around for over 7 years, if not more, and now, NOEL is bringing him some well-deserved recognition. For us Grobanites, as we're called... We have been there for Josh since the very beginning. Your article is strange, and you need to stop playing your LED ZEP. albums backwards, and move on to the future. I'm glad this future has Josh Groban in it! Happy Holidays all Grobanites!

JoeC Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:06 AM EST

I'm not exactly a Josh Groban fan, but anyone who infuriates critics like you Simon, must be doing something right. Ave Maria indeed.

Kim Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

Ok, first, Josh Groban is not Jewish, his dad converted when he married his mother and Josh Groban is always talking about what a magical time of year Christmas is for him and his family. Second, REALLY??? You are seriously linking Josh Groban and the devil??? Take a deep breath and get a grip. In this time of Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton's etc, someone with a voice and who avoids the media is a welcome change. I can't have just 'pop' music playing on the radio because I have 3 young children and I'm constantly having to edit the lyrics. Music video's, same thing, even my old standards in country. I love Kim Possible but my 4 year old started wanted to show her belly button at all times, and that's not quite appropriate for a four year old, I hope you agree. NOW, with Josh Groban, I can put on any of his cd's or dvd's and know that we are completely safe. My children are learning Italian! They want to play the piano and the drums. They ask questions like, "What is a vow" Devil? Uh, no

DOG spelled backward Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 08:47 AM EST

He is a bore. Who cares. Let people who like him, enjoy him. They have enough problems. At least he isn't out repopulating the planet with water heads like the Spears gals.

Becca Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 08:42 AM EST

This is absolutely the stupidest piece of garbage I have ever read in my entire life! Get a grip, man!

moshala Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 04:37 AM EST

Rakeem....you remind me of this very disturbing douchebag in HS that used to put down people and then when they 'fired back' at him, he'd say...'gee, I was just kidding, can't you take a joke?'....he's probably been beat up so many times by now, maybe he finally 'gets it', that he is NOT funny at all.

This comment was great...."I guess that since the REAL EW popwatch writers have gone on vacation, they've got this hack to fill in."

^^^ agree totally! GO BACK, HACK, TO THE ROCK YOU CRAWLED OUT FROM!

lovey Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 03:52 AM EST

Simon (who the he## are U anyway?? Oh, yeah, that's right...NOBODY)....YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

Brainiac Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:47 AM EST

I guess that since the REAL EW popwatch writers have gone on vacation, they've got this hack to fill in.

I can understand Josh not being to everyone's taste, but there is no denying his talent. Even people who cannot stand his style of music can't help but acknowledge the fact that he's a great, nay WONDERFUL singer.

(Actually, Josh isn't Jewish, but that's not really important.)

Nix Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 01:19 AM EST

Careful, Simon. Josh is Jewish. You might be accused of antisemitism.

Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 12:23 AM EST

Check your dictionary. There is nothing meek or timid about Josh. He is constantly pushing to include world music sounds in his songs, to contemporize classics and educate his fans by exposing them to a diversity of artists such as Imogen Heap, Matthew Good, Radiohead and others. Surely this reviewer has more writing tricks of the trade in his pocket than laughingly equating Noel's sales with the sign of the Devil... slow news day, boys?

judy hartman Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 11:49 PM EST

putting someone down is ONE thing, but the joke about the devil is uncalled for..he earned it, Oprah didnt!!!!sing away Josh, your fans and more are listening!!!

Mary Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 11:35 PM EST

The only thing that surpasses your stupidity is Josh's amazing talent!! I don't know who hired you, but I would rather read article's with open minded writer's. What's the point of being a critic, if you can't even have an un-biased opinion to all different types of music. Oh well, who really cares about you? Josh has had the last laugh!!

Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:20 PM EST

Simon, your question is easy to answer; Josh Groban IS the devil! Why else would his music be so horrible, but still be able to attract so many fans?

Bear Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:06 PM EST

Well. First I was afraid to come here and read a bunch of hater posts. THAT fear was unfounded. I guess I'll just say that in our sad little world, it's good to see that some people still understand the meaning and import of a quality voice singing quality music. I only became a fan this year but I'm so happy for Josh. He really, really deserves this success.

Shauna Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:04 PM EST

"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. They risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. They thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than their criticism designating it so."
(quote from Rataouille, paraphrased)

Those who can, do. Those who can't, critique.

NOEL is a top-notch Christmas CD, period! It's not rock and roll, it's not a head banger, it's not a twangy southern piece, it's just good high-class Christmas music, and the little dude has an excellent voice and knows how to use it. Contract with the devil? I seriously doubt it. I don't think the article insults Mr. Groban as much as it does those who made the CD #1. He's aluding to the fact all listeners are stupid cult-followers with no sense of good taste, and therefore the only way we could enjoy something enough to purchase it is to be mind-drugged by satan. The guy needs to get a life. Some of us do have discerning tastes in just about everyting. lol

Avelin Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 09:15 PM EST

just because josh groban isn't bouncing in out of rehab doesn't mean he can't have a #1 CD. Yeesh...we can't even appreciate ACTUAL singing anymore...I guess we would rather prefer Britney's digital crap

fan Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 09:06 PM EST

This is such a retarded and thoughtless post. Get a brain.

Muffy Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 08:07 PM EST

I guess if they're not popping pills, snorting crack, losing custody of the kids they shouldn't have had in the first place, and getting arrested for DUI, they're not worthy of top-spot. Hmmmmm......

The author of this article is a deaf douchebag. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Rakeem Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

Wow, how can so many EW readers have such a lack of a sense of humor? You people are too much! lol Very funny post! I'm not a fan of Groban (no matter how hard Oprah & Gayle thrust him upon the general public), but he is very talented.

beb Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 07:52 PM EST

GOB - Billboard's calendar runs from November to November, which explains why Daughtry finished their year at #1. They need the time to compile the year-end chart.

Court Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 07:18 PM EST

I know that EW is snarky, sarcastic, and occasionally downright mean, but what is with the absolute plethora of nasty, hate-filled, bile-spewing posts lately? Do you guys actually like anyone or anything at all, that isn't Lost?

Kate Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

He's a good looking guy with a beautiful voice. He's not my cup of tea, but he definitely has talent.

Shawn D Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 06:32 PM EST

Junior, you may not know any gay men that swoon, but I do. Believe it or not, there are people in this country that you don't know.

GOB, Daughtry sold 2.3 million albums, not 3.2

Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 06:06 PM EST

You know what's interesting about Josh Groban? Absolutely nothing!

Houstonian Jen in DC Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Ummm...Simon, I was going to comment on how loudly I laughed while reading your post, but I fear for my safety after reading the previous posts. Viva la Groban!

(How ironic that he made a pact with Satan on an album celebrating Jesus, right?)

Stephen Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Ok, I can't stand Josh Groban's mucis at all. It puts me to sleep. But Simon, please get a grop. Like I said, I'm not a fan, but won't say he has some contract with the devil. If success means working with Satan, then Will Smith must have sold his soul this past weekend.

Snarf Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:54 PM EST

Of corse it's th Devil. FYI - also see the inexplecible popularity of Grey's Anatomy, According to Jim and High School Musical. Uh oh - here comes the God-Squad to bible thump and act sanctimonious. What's wrong people lose your sense of humor at church?

megg Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Hey Simon, why dont you broaden your musical taste outside of "cutting edge" and "crap no one else listens to". Seriously.

Emoney Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:20 PM EST

Oh, Simon! Perhaps you were unaware of how rabidly dedicated the Grobanites are to their Messiah! I am not a fan, but I know better than to attach my name to anything disparaging him -- you might wake up with a horse's head in your bead for implying he's in league with Satan. If you wake up at all... Good luck to you!

teresa Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Josh's cd NOEL is number one in the country because he has the most beautiful baritone voice in the world. Maybe the country is ready for such a talented, well-trained voice over the yelling and noise that I hear so often today and what society today calls music. People may not like Josh's music but you have to admit, no one can sing baritone the way he does and he can touch a heart with his music like no other. Oprah's support may have helped but I'd say Josh has been blessed beyond measure to have a voice such as his and he has worked hard to get where he is at 26. His NOEL can sale itself.

Alice Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

I know you think you are being funny and clever and cute, but Josh Groban is a real person and implying that he is in some way connected with evil forces might lead naive readers to the wrong conclusions. Implying that an actual person has negative qualities is not appropriate, in my opinion.

Brainiac Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

Simon Vozick-Levinson, are you deaf, dumb, or both? Josh Groban is UNDENIABLY one of the world's best vocalists. Just because he doesn't happen to be your cup of tea, does not mean you have to be such a rude, ridiculous @$$hole about it. The Christmas album is fantastic, the arrangments are terrific, and Josh's voice is SUPERBE. This type of article is inappropriate and uncalled for for any singer, let alone one of the world's best. Get your ears cleaned out.

And Merry Christmas.

jamie Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

It was on Oprah's "favorite things" list - her fans will buy any and everything on that list. That's why it's sold so many copies. (It's also a pretty decent Christmas album)

GOB Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

Umm... didn't Mandi just have a popwatch a few days ago saying how Daughtry had the best-selling album of the year with 3.2 million copies sold? Does Billboard have a "best of the year" list each week?

Also, concerning Josh... a singer who sells his albums without the use of computerized vocal enhancement, rap collaborators, over-produced beats, personal scandals or highly sexualized imagery... it IS a wonder. Perhaps it's his talent. Naaahh... popwatch says he doesn't have any, so that can't be it.

Sadie Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

Sorry for the double post -- I wasn't getting along with typepad for a sec there.

Sadie Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

Josh is extremely talented (he actually SINGS as opposed to shouting) and well deserving of his success. And I think he'd actually find this post hilarious, especially the picture.

Sadie Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

Josh is incredibly talented (he actually SINGS people, none of that shouting mess) and deserving of his success. And he has a great sense of humor and would likely find this post hilarious -- especially the picture.

junior Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

A) Josh Groban is clearly a robot sent to entrance the people of Earth with the notes he produces from his "vocal projection" box.

B) I know no gay men, myself included, who "swoon" over his voice.

C) Oprah had something to do with this. He went on her show recently. Robot and God, together? I'm surprised it hasn't sold more.

Anne Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

I did not know a thing about Josh Groban until I heard his version of Ave Maria (found on the Noel album)a week or so ago. I am very impressed with his talent. He has an amazing voice and does justice to songs that most singers butcher (O Holy Night, anyone?). It is a fantastic album, and I am glad that it has done so well. I would particularly recommend listening to a song on the album entitled "Thankful" Very beautiful.

M. Shearer Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:14 PM EST

Um--I think I'd dare to disagree. What you may call "beverage coaster"-worthy "milquetoast," my edgy and tragically hip friend, others may call refined talent. No dark mystery here. Young Mr. Groban's voice is simply beautiful to listen to, end of story. Believe it or not, there's a whole segment of the world's population that still likes traditional vocal music. Not every artist needs to sound like a cat being murdered by a chainsaw, and not every message needs to be loaded with snarky cleverness, angst, lust, or the unspeakable darkness of the human condition. I don't care to be told that it's not "okay" to like Josh Groban, and apparently I'm in good company, since 669,000 others agree with me.

Kami Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

I can't believe that you said that High School Musical 2 would be a better #1. What's with all of the hatin'? I agree with what Shawn said. Josh has a lot of fans apparently and people like Christmas music. I've only heard a few songs on the cd, but the songs were pretty good and this is coming from someone with very picky taste and an intense hatred of sub-par remakes of Christmas classics. Please stop hatin'. It's the holiday season afterall!

Shawn D. Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

Um, yeah I disagree. The guy has incredible talent and I couldn't be happier for him. Like him or not, the women of America, specifically middle aged Oprah watchers, adore him. And gay men like me swoon over his voice. So he will always do well with those two highly important niches in demographics.

John Drennan Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

Congratulations Josh! You deserve your success! Noel is great!
