iPod inspection: The five best songs you never play

Dec 21, 2007, 11:08 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: iPod inspection, Madonna, Music

Madge_l Last weekend, in the midst of putting together a dinner-party playlist, I noticed something surprising: There are several hundred songs that I've never played on my iPod (which I've had for a year and a half) or the iTunes on my computer (which I've had for more than two years). And these ignored tracks don't just include album filler that I haven't gotten around to deleting; dozens of favorites have been sitting dormant for the last 24 months, just waiting for me to press play. Here's my top five:

Groove Armada's "At the River"
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Manic Depression"
Kelli Ali's "Psychic Cat"
Madonna's "Don't Tell Me"
Sade's "Like a Tattoo"

How about you guys? Give your music library a good, thorough once-over and then share with your fellow PopWatchers: What are the five best songs you never play?

Sheriff Fatman- Carter USM (The Unstoppable Sex Machine)

Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll- Ian Dury and the Blockheads

Boys and Girls - Blur

Love and Affection-Nelson (Ok! I am not going to lie, their full album was bad but this song was the poo back in 1990!)

As the Biggest Apple Hater in the State of Michigan, I don't have an iPod and will never own one on principle. But on my cheapo Chinese-made MP3 player, these are the songs that seem to have been forgotten:

"Everything She Does Is Magic" -- The Police
"Here, There and Everywhere" -- The Beatles
"A Comet Appears" -- The Shins
"Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)" -- The Jam
"Shiny, Happy People" -- R.E.M.

Sam Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

"Stayin' Alive" - The Bee Gees
"I'll Stop the World and Melt w/ You" - The Cure
"Colorblind" - The Counting Crows
"Tymps" - Fiona Apple
"So Jealous" - Tegan and Sarah

Bernard Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

"Anywhere" by 112 featruing Faith Evans
"Nice & Slow" by Usher
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears
"Flight" by Studio Apartment featuring Monique Bingham
"This Time" by Solu

Gringo Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

1. Trisha Yearwood, 'Trying To Love You'
2. Rilo Kiley, 'I Never'
3. Bebe, 'Buscome'
4. The Deuce Project, 'Stone Cold'
5. Briskeby, 'Between You And Me'

Matthew Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 09:19 PM EST

Love is a Losing Game - Amy Winehouse
Heart of Glass - Blondie
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
Like a Prayer - Madonna
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

Kathryn Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 02:16 AM EST

I actually created a special smart playlist on my iTunes of songs that had been played 2 or fewer times, and play it often to make sure I don't miss any good ones! (Plus, it's a great way to weed out the lame ones that need to be axed!)

Emily R Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 12:05 AM EST

1. Not the Doctor (Alanis)
2. Suffragette City (Bowie)
3. Bridge over Troubled Water
4. Pinball Wizard (yet, I’ve played every other song at least once from the album ‘Tommy’)
5. Thriller

Broadway Baby Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

1. Simple, Anita Morris from Nine
2. Penny Lane, The Beatles (I know! I'm suprised too)
3. Rapture, Blondie
4. Swallowed in the Sea, Coldplay
5. Say It Again, Danse Society

And that's just the first 4 letters of the alphabet - I need to lay off my playlists and shuffle for awhile me thinks.

robert Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 03:30 AM EST

Save a prayer - Duran Duran
Janie s got a gun _ Aerosmith
I can t make you love me _ Bonnie Raitt
Alive _ Edwin
Your Song _ Elton John

Celimene Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 04:53 AM EST

"Ba Ba" by Sigur Ros
"Fernando" by ABBA
"Lost in Kyoto" by Air
"Que Onda Guero" by Beck
"Soma" by Smashing Pumpkins

Funny, most of them were highly played on my last (dead) iPod but haven't been touched on my new one. Also disappointing, because "Fernando" is my favorite guilty pleasure song ever.

Nix Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 02:26 AM EST

It's one thing to have stuff on your iPod/iTunes that's unrated or low-rated that you don't listen to. But I have a playlist of my personal Five-Star Songs, and I consulted that for this, and OMG:

1) Heavy Metal Drummer -Wilco
2) Satisfaction - the Stones
3) Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
4) I Want To Be The Boy - White Stripes
5) Diggin' On You - TLC

I love these songs and I haven't listened to them since my last ripthrough? (I'm one of those people who re-rip their libraries about twice a year. but still.)

beb Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:06 PM EST

I came across three more that deserve mentioning here, all from the same artist...Jessica Folker.

"To Be Able To Love"
"How Will I Know"
"I Do"

All are accessible via YouTube...what Max Martin's production can do with a great voice....

daisyj Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

I mostly use the Party Shuffle feature on iTunes, because I like the randomness, but it does mean that I can miss out on hearing my favorites. (Although I do have a complicated system of rankings and play counts that even things out a bit). Here are a few it hasn't played yet:

"Walkaway Joe", Trisha Yearwood
"Float On", Modest Mouse
"They", Gem
"JCB Song", Nizlopi
"Self Control", Infernal

gisel Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

1. mardy bum-the arctic monkeys
2. heart of glass-blondie
3. don't you forget about me-simple minds (i hear this all the freaking time on the radio, but it's never been played on my ipod)
4. golden lights-the smiths
5. bye bye bye-nsync (don't judge me)

this doesn't even constitute a scratch on my "never played" list.

Twain Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

I've created a playlist to play the songs I never play but still can't make a dent. Here are a few "oldies" that I love but never play:
Round Here - Counting Crows
Tell Her This - Del Amitri
Suspicious Minds - Fine Young Cannibals
Devil Inside - INXS
St. Teresa - Joan Osborne

mbr Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

What Difference Does It Make?- The Smiths
Gold Soundz- Pavement
About A Girl- Nirvana
No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn- Beastie Boys
Acrobat- U2

Emma Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 06:06 PM EST

Mother - Pink Floyd
Release - Pearl Jam
Wake Up - Rage Against the Machine
All Apologies - Nirvana
God - Tori Amos

Wow, I changed my list like 6 times to come up with my 5 favourites...That's kind of sad. This is from my iTunes though, I think I have played some of these on my iPod.

Tiffany Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

I was noticing the other day that I haven't played every single song on my ipod.
Resentment-Beyonce
Goodlife-TI
I Try-Talib Kweli
Ice Ice Baby-Vanilla Ice ( I know what y'all want to say and I'm not ashamed)
Nice and Slow-Usher

Maybe not the best, but I like them, and like, never listen to tehm

Greg Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Meanwhile, I've played "At the River" 9 times...

Greg Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

I almost exclusively listen to my iPod on shuffle, so it's the randomness of fate that has consigned these tunes. And with 8K+ on there, it's mathematically understandable that some get ignored. (Ironically 3 of the below were added three years ago today!)
Green Day - Longview
Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
Kool & The Gang - Get Down On It
OutKast - The Way You Move
U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name

ANDRE Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

Groove Armada's "At the River" ITS LIKE ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS EVER!!!!!... LOVE IT!! AND YOUR RIGHT I BARELY PLAY IT TOO ....

Dinosaur Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

There's lots of Groove Armada that's way better than "At the River".

Frank Black Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

with over 12,000 songs, there are a ton I haven't played. The trick is to create a Smart Playlist with the setting for play count to zero. I titled mine with the obvious Never Played. Forces your iPod to branch out and once it's played that song, it drops off the list.

Snarf Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Suede - Electricity
Hole - Boys on the Radio
Duran Duran - Come Undone
Concrete Blonde - Mexican Moon
Wild Strawberries - Trampoline

Kirsten Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

Oddly, " Don't Tell Me" is in the same position on my I-Pod. It's been six months since I put it on, and I've listened to it twice.
Another four-
" Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana
" Walk Away Renee" The Left Banke
" Rock And Roll High School" The Ramones
" Hunger Strike" Temple Of The Dog
Yet I cannot bear to delete them, even with the CDs sitting nearby.

Mem Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

Oh boy...
1. Harlem's Nocturne- Alicia Keys
2. Before He Cheats- Carrie Underwood ( and any other good country song... it just doesn't occur to me to listen to them)
3. The Well and the Lighthouse- Arcade Fire
4. Amsterdam- Guster
5. Say it All- Sondre Lerche

paige Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

you dont listen to "dont tell me"??? its one of the best songs on that dissapointing album!!!

Mike Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Good call on Manic Depression. Great song.

- Bebel Gilberto - Aganju (Latin Project Remix)
- Portal (Jonathan Coulton) - Still Alive
- MIT Logarhythms - No Such Thing
- Nails - 88 Lines About 44 Women
- Ray Charles - Lonely Avenue

junior Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

I maintain a very rigorous standards policy for my iPod. If I haven't listened to it for a few months and it is rated low, it goes. There's no point in wasting space when the CDs are in the cabinet if I really wanted to listen to something (which never happens).

That being said, I do have a few good songs I've listened to like once:

- "I Get Lonely" by Janet Jackson
- "I Touch Myself" by The Divinyls
- "Mickey" by Toni Basil
- "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder
- "All You Want" by Dido

And the fact that you don't listen to "Don't Tell Me" on a reg. basis saddens me...

beb Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

This is going to be a good one, Slezak...here goes!

1) We Need a Resolution - Aaliyah
2) Snow on the Sahara - Anggun
3) Hunter - Dido
4) I Will Love Again - Lara Fabian
5) No Regrets - Robbie Williams
