It's time for Kellie Pickler and Sherri Shepherd to quit playing dumb!

Dec 6, 2007, 08:30 AM | by Christine Fenno

Categories: 'American Idol', Television, The View, Water cooler

Dumb_l Okay, it’s official: the trend of women on TV being “cheerfully dumb” has got to stop. Sherri “the world is flat” Shepherd (pictured, right), did you actually declare on The View earlier this week that Christianity predated everything--including Greek civilization? Kellie Pickler (pictured, left), did you actually say on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? that you thought Europe was a country and you’d never heard of Hungary? And are you both as pleased with the attention as you seem?

In a world where so many trailblazing, intelligent women—Hillary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Katie Couric, take your pick—try to make the world a better place with brainpower, you’ve got to ask yourself: Do Sherri and Kellie have any humiliation threshold? Do they even realize how vacant they sound? While neither may be a natural-born genius, why is anyone who uses her time in the spotlight to be so unrelentingly dim rewarded with more spotlight? Shouldn’t any nitwit who comes off as 100 percent allergic to reading (books, news, maps, anything) be mocked all the way to the unemployment line? Or at least the remedial classroom where she belongs?

For the record, EW readers who point out that only one woman cracked the Top 10 on our own Hollywood’s Smartest People list make a valid observation, if you ask me; the rankings, hotly debated and meticulously researched right here inside EW headquarters, rate “impact” on our culture—and it's worth debating why there aren't more so-called "influential" women to highlight. But don’t kid yourself that Fifth Grader host Jeff Foxworthy’s condescending banter (Jeff: “Kellie, focus.” Kellie: “I’m listening to what you’re saying, but I only hear what I want to.” Jeff: “That’s just called being a woman.”) during the pitiful Pickler performance was merely harmless filler. Misogyny is a bitch, people, and it pops up wherever it’s welcome!

I’d love to hear other reactions to the celebration of the “cheerfully dumb.” Who thinks Sherri Shepherd and Kellie Pickler milk the dimwit persona for the attention? And while we're at it, what can be done to stop them?

Carrie Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Kelly may be dumb, but she can sing up a storm.
Sherri is just plain disgustingly dumb and has NO talent other than preening her wigs.

Brian K Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 06:05 PM EST

It will stop when my male counterparts start demanding more from women. Women like Sherri & Kellie can "get away" with such behavior because the majority of men find it sexy. The scary thing with Picklers appearence is not that she amay be very stupid, but that she seems to think it is perfectly fine to appear that way. Sad indeed!

dma69 Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

When will these women learn that playing dumb is simply not cute? It's annoying and sad. It may look cute in the beginning, but after a while the act gets really old and no one will take you seriously. I really feel sorry for this generation. If the Parises, Britneys, Jessicas, Sherries, and Kellies are the best role models they could turn to, this country is doomed.

Young ladies, being dumb is bad. Playing dumb is worse. If you have to play dumb to get a guy to like you, maybe he's not worth the trouble. If a guy can't accept that you have a brain, kick him to the curb. Remember, looks fade, but brains and personality are forever. And if you lack brains and personality, you're screwed.

Get an education. Watch PBS or The History Channel instead of MTV. Read a book other than tabloids and Cosmo. Go to a museum instead of a mall. Most of all, respect yourself.

to realityknife Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

Funny how their color didn't even occur to me when reading this article and the comments. Perhaps people are giving Kellie a break because they know she's younger and not educated. Perhaps it's because she isn't on a talk show where people expect to watch intelligent women discussing current events.

Carrie Sun, Dec 9, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

What can be done to stop them? How about no longer devoting a single word or breath to them?

realityknife Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 09:20 PM EST

Funny how so many below believe that the black woman is "genuinely" stupid, but with the blonde it's just an "act." You might want to think about what drives these assumptions.

How about this hypothesis: they're both complete imbeciles. And so is anyone who even knew their names before this controversy.

Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 03:00 AM EST

wasn't that the point?

zligreenbird Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 11:44 PM EST

Heh, I find it ironic that you used that term to describe misogyny in a negative way. I totally agree, though ...

JennyFur Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 10:31 PM EST

This makes me cringe! Sherri is bad enough, but Kelly is just as bad if not worse! Argh! More proof that the public schools in America are not getting the job done!

Dio_K Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

or do they weep?

to chubsoda Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:22 PM EST

And American women weap

chubsoda Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Hey Mark in NYC. Young? Who cares if she is too young, as though this justifies her stupidity. I've had geographical discussions with children in Europe that could name every state in America. And yes, that is an exaggeration but I am trying to make a point. My other point is this. This "stupid girl" act makes it very, very difficult for me to date American women. Sorry girls, but it's true. When I date European and Asian (born and bred) they do not act this way and it's fun to go out with these types because they can think, talk, act accordingly, and even drop the cell phone for a night when they're out with ME. They despise the Hilton act. www.easyshop-easybuy.com

Mkatty Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

Where are the guys? Dumb doesn't seem to do it with celebrity males. How about false macho? "I do all my own stunts." "Yes, that was me climbing the rock wall with the 2 mile drop." OR false vanity: "Yes, this is my own hair." "Botox? Me?"

Laura Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

Okay, first off, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde is NOT dumb. She's shallow and naive, but definitely not dumb. Sherri and Kellie are something entirely different. I couldn't believe it when I heard Sherri say that Jesus predated Western civilization. Huh? Maybe they should take a hint from Paris Hilton and stop "actingdumb." What? Paris Hilton's still dumb? I guess there's no hope, then.

Anna Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

You all do know that Barbara Walters isn't all that smart herself. That's been clear for decades. I don't know why anyone would expect her to hire all smart people to co-host the View. Then she'd really look bad.

Clem Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 10:18 AM EST

Elizabeth is not much brighter than Sherri. She is always saying things that have no basis in fact. For instance, during one conversation about religion and the Constitution, she insisted that God is all over the Constitution and the fact is that the only time God is mentioned is two times when it is stating that there should be no set religion and that there should be no religious test when electing the President. She is really rather ignorant, but most people don't know it because they also don't know what the Constitution says... mostly because they blindly believe what they hear people like Elizabeth say on national television. But, at least Elizabeth does seem to believe that the world is round.

Tina Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 09:53 AM EST

I actually believe that Sherri really is that stupid whereas Pickler is cashing in on the dumb blond act. Both presentations are really unfortunate. What really strikes me is that during the search for replacements host over the summer on the View some really smart and quick witted women were passed over in favor of Sheperd. That is what is really sad. The View is now unwatchable.

jen Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

While I don't mind a conservative point of view (everyone should have an opinion, right?)from Hasselbeck, the ignorance and apparent bliss for having it bothers me. I love Joy and Whoopi, and I times I can find Sherri cute. But overall, her comments drive me crazy. After a few kids, a nasty divorce, and a move to a city where she knew no one, she can't be that ignorant. And Kelli, well, I just won't go there. As bad as I felt for her touching performance at the CMA's, my overall opinion of her is "why?" Why did she make it big? Why did anyone who had a conversation with her think it would be a good idea to let her make any comment in public okay. It is sad that more young 20 females still act sooooo stupid and think it's cute.

bud Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 08:24 AM EST

We can stop watching and writing about them. I didn't read all the posts, I hope many more have said this.

FNL Rocks Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 05:58 AM EST

This has been an interesting thread to read. While I enjoy pop culture at all levels of "brow" from the high to the low, neither the View nor American Idol have ever interested me, so I don't have much direct exposure to Sherri or Kelli. But being a smart woman who acts smart and confident without taking responsibility for threatening others is a major factor for girls and women in our culture! It's hard to find humor in women playing the "dumb woman" role when there's no sense that she's PLAYING. I think there are many female characters that illustrate this being done well (Legally Blonde, for example), but it seems that when it comes to "reality television," things slide very quickly to the flat one-dimensional stupid female archetype. And THAT is what our young women (and men- I have two boys, and it's just as important to me that they revere women for their intelligence) easily get a message that they'll benefit from trading their brains for cuteness/sexuality with vapidity.

R. H. Marquez Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:09 AM EST

I actually stopped watching The View because of Sheppard and Hasselbeck. It is not their ignorance that is really dangerous as much as their insistance that they are ultimately right. Previous to this season, I had watched The View grow from an educated forum of women to a daytime excuse for Celebrity Bru-ha-ha. I was hoping that Shephard's spot would have been filled by someone with equal amounts of perception, patience, and listening skills. I no longer watch The View, but I still trust Barbara Walters as a journalist.

Lange Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 12:04 AM EST

I couldn't believe my ears on The View the other day. It saddens me that having a younger woman on that show (Sherri and Elizabeth) seems to equal ignorant. Dumb is NOT a point of view, people, and I am sick of it being portrayed as such in our society! There is no way they would ever have someone Whoopi or Joy's age on the show that was that ignorant, but we all seem to condone it in younger women.

M.L. Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:30 PM EST

I am so glad other people feel this way! I TiVo The View everyday and eagerly anticipate watching it after returning home from work. This week, more than ever, Sherri has been driving me insane with her ignorance. I think I have a large threshold for stupidity, but Sherri Shepherd is completely uninformed and the panel on The View suffers because of it. I actually was looking forward to the period Elisabeth Hasselbeck was going to be on maternity leave because her political opinions are maddening to me, but I'm actually missing the conservative Hasselbeck because even though I disagree with her on almost every issue -- she is at least informed and presents her "view" in an articulate, intelligent way. Sherri, read a newspaper and study what's going on in the world -- your co-workers and audience will appreciate it!

V.M.L. Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:18 PM EST

These women are empowering women to be dumb. No wonder many societies are dominated by men--they think women are stupid!

RayT Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:12 PM EST

It's pretty sad that The View, which last year was so celebrated for being one of the only shows on TV which featured women talking about real issues, has now sunk so low that one of their panelists is unaware of topics I covered in my freshman Western Civilization course. I can't stand how all the amazing work that academics do (such as historians, anthropologists, etc.) is so ignored or convoluted by our pop culture mouthpieces.

alexm Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:15 PM EST

It's funny that your headline suggests they are "playing" dumb. It seems pretty clear at this point that these mainstream outlets love a good excuse to demonstrate some good ol' fashioned misogyny, and women like Sherri and Kellie prove to be spectacular targets; hence, they will keep getting airtime. So the great circle of life continues. Hakuna Matata!

stephen's ode to slezak Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 06:32 PM EST

Dear Barbara
Fire Sherri, and while you're at it Hasselbot. Hire Kathy Griffin.
Tahanks.

PJ Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

The other day, Sherri equated wearing a Scottish kilt with cross-dressing, and said she has moral problems with allowing her child around anyone in a kilt. That's not just ig'nant. That's xenophobic, and xenophobia is dangerous. Stupidity and arrogance like that, which have no connection to reality (kilts are customary costumes with no sexual or moral connotations whatsoever), is what has been getting America into such trouble internationally lately. We're all waiting for Sherri to say something so grand and so moronic that she'll have to back down, Imus-style.

Becca Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 05:01 PM EST

trsquare - I'm happy you've raised intelligent daughters, but you might want to tell them that the only bachelor president was Buchanan, not Van Buren.

Candy Curtis Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

Statements like the one Sherri did is something you`d expect from someone who still believes the world is flat because "the bible told her so" . She seems incapable of thinking for herself and it is truly sad because she used to be a very funny comedienne until she found Jebus .
Kellie`s cluelessness worries me less since I find it not as dangerous as Sherri`s ignorance . Her low IQ and blondistics might not be the best represantion for women but it`s cute and funny . I mean , men have been the root of countless jokes based on slow brain power . So why can`t bimbos like Kellie Pickler share the fun ?

Zax Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 02:56 PM EST

Condoleeza Rice is using her brains to better the world? That's news to me. Unless you call being a stooge and helping to drag this country into an intractable and unending conflict using her brains for the betterment of mankind.

Ty Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

What about Jessica Simpson and those awful Macy's commercials? Here it is four years and one husband later, and she's still allowing herself to be portrayed as a dumb blonde for the sake of publicity. She's much worse than Sherri, who I believe is just plain ignorant as opposed to playing a dumb role.

Stella Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 02:05 PM EST

Kellie is dim, but she's uneducated, lived a relatively sheltered life, seems to be a nice person, and sings country music pretty good. Sherri is a comedian and sassy and funny enough for the View. She's paid to make dumb comments, because this is all Barbara Walters is allowed to do in her golden years. And the media gives them the spotlight because celebrities acting dumb always draws a sniggering crowd. Kellie was on Smarter than a 5th Grader to act silly and dumb, which she did. And yes, it sucks that this is still one of the main ways women get attention in the business. But women producers and studio executives are among those putting them up to it.

Adrian Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

Sherri makes me miss Starr Jones, and that's really saying something. She (Sherri) is pretty much the walking definition of "ugly Americanism".

PJ Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

Sherri terrifies me. She's ignorant as a box of hair, yet she pounds the table and gets sassy and insists she's right about everything. Nothing scarier than a dumb, wrong person who thinks they have the power of the Lord behind their ignorant statements. Like I said, she frightens me. Kellie just really, really annoys me.

Ignorance is not to be celebrated. It's to be stamped out. And why is it that you really don't find many MALE celebrities trotting around cutely and pretending to be stupid? Why is this something that, historically, women have gotten the mileage out of? (Then again, even Judy Holliday had a genius-level IQ and held her own testifying in front of Congress during the Red Scare. She played dumb on screen, but earned her smarts publicly.)

Mia Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

We're giving them too much attention. They feed on it. Until Babs Walters can produce a show with intelligent wit, I'm not watching. Until Kelly learns that attention is great, but learning about the world around you is more important for your soul, I'm not buying.

Lily Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

I feel sorry for Whoopi. She has to try to remain civil and not in shock at what Sherri says. She has to keep the show moving and try to correct Sherri without appearing condescending.

Kris Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

Amen Sister Friend!

Ms Daisy Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

To "trsquare"....congratulations for raising 2 bright and thoughtful daughters. We need more bright young ladies who aspire to being more than just a pretty face.

Clementine Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

I started watching The View regularly when Rosie was on it because I wanted to see the conflicts and now I watch it because I am amazed at the ignorant things that come out of Sherri's mouth. Maybe Barbara Walters chose her to get the ratings back up. For the life of me, I can't think of any other reason she could have been chosen. I was hoping for Kathy Griffin, but instead we got this dolt.

Faith Whitfield Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

There's a difference between sincere ignorance, as in Kellie Pickler's case, and obnoxious stupidity, as in Sherri Shepherd's case. Sherri is disgusting because she feels that she is correct, and she is arrogant and stupid. That is a dangerous combination. But the blame lies in the people who picked her to grace the airwaves 5 days a week. They could have picked someone else, but they picked an ignoramus. And just who the hell is she anyway?

trsquare Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

Both of those irritate me because I have raised my daughters to be intelligent, caring individuals. Both were Homecoming princesses, both are graduating from high school with an International Baccalaureate diploma, and they both just shook their heads at these two dim bulbs, bemoaning the fact that they're confirming stereotypes that the majority of women are trying to destroy. And, yes, they CAN name the Presidents and their wives (with the exception of Van Buren).

maya Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

Sorry for the second post, but I just watched Kelli Pickler's youtube video. And I have to say, I'll take Sherri Shepherd's genuine ignorance over Kelli pretending to be stupid for entertainment. Maybe if we invade Hungary, more people will know where it is. Yay! Geography lessons through empire!

Brainiac Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

"It's time for Kellie Pickler and Sherri Shepherd to quit playing dumb!"

Amen. But I don't think Sherri is playing - she really believes that Christinay predates everything. She IS dumb. She obviously can't control what she puts in her mouth. I am surprised she is even able to dress herself in the morning and get to the studio.

WH Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Some people don't have the opportunity or desire to get a decent education, but should they take PRIDE in it? "I'm so dumb; I'm cute!" Try that as an ugly girl and see how far you go. And there's nothing sadder than an old "dumb" celebrity. In days of yore, Goldie Hawn played the dimwit, but you always saw the smarts behind her eyes. It didn't make it okay, but you knew it was an act. Take a page from Shakira, girls, and go to class or read a book once in a while.

maya Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Sherri Shepherd astounds me. I just watched the youtube clip. You know Kate Walsh is like WTF???? I mean, what do you do with people who are that genuinely stupid and also that obnoxiously insistent. Throw them to the lions?

Becca Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

I admittedly don't know much about either one of this woman. I agree that no one should ever act dumb when they're not. It's ridiculous and demeaning. But I don't think being dumb is the worst thing in the world. A lot of dumb people make significant contributions to society through their other talents (i.e. singing, comedy, being kind to others). I think the problem is a society that exploits stupidity for humor or shock value. As long as programs like "Are you smarter than a fifth grader?" remain popular so will Kellie Pickler.

Moe Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

Jeff Foxworthy said that?!? I can't believe there hasn't been more of an uproar. Now we have misogyny disguised as family entertainment.

linda s Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:57 AM EST

Thanks for writing about this because it so bothers me. I think it really started with Jessica Simpson and her and Nick's reality show. It bothers me greatly that young girls think being stupid is the best way to get attention. Also, is anyone else bothered by the Beyonce ad (for cable or satelite service). I think it's bad enough when that's what music videos are but the ad really makes taking whoring a product to a whole new level. Any time there seems to be a bottom to all this, somehow we sink to an all new low.

GeeMoney Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

They are milking it for ratings, money and using being dimwitted as a way to keep people talking about them. Look how well it's worked for Paris Hilton!

Carlos Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

Every time Sherri opens her mouth I want to fast forward. I think she's worse than Elisabeth. Kathy Griffin was a much better choice.

Christy Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

I am not familiar with either one, but have seen both clips and I think what upsets me the most is that I have two degrees and am struggling to find a job and these two dumb women will forever have more money than me.

Jim Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Sherri's problem is complete and utter ignorance. It's like she's never looked at anything, including her faith, beyond the surface. She takes what's she's told at face value and doesn't question or investigate anything. And it makes her look like a complete moron when she's nailed on something.

Pickler, I think, is genuinely not book-smart. Wonder if she got through school on social promotion rather than decent grades.

Tyler D Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

I find it astounding that EW actually spent time "researching" that Smartest People in Hollywood list. It looked like it was thrown together over a coffee break after they sorted through submissions from publicists. I think about half that list was just insulting to the intelligence of EW's readers.

Ms Daisy Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Pickler is taking the "dumb blonde" routine way too seriously. Shepherd is just a moron.

Daryn Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Thank you LisaMama and GingerCat! As I was reading, all I kept thinking was "Where was this posting when Jessica Simpson was on Newlyweds???" Everyone seemed to think she was adorable then... Thank goodness we all know better now.

RP Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

That's "utter" idiot, donner. An udder is what you find on a cow. You might want to try checking your grammar
before calling other people idiots. I think Kellie is faking most of it. If you go to Vote for the Worst you'll find comments from people in her hometown that say she exaggerated for the show. I think she's faking to cover for what she actually doesn't know and wants us to believe she's faking all of it. People tend to like or at least forgive Kellie for it because she is also unsophisticated and seems embarrassed by it at times so it isn't like she has the attitude, "It's good to be dumb".

Sherri Shepherd, on the other hand, isn't an act. She also believes the stuff she says is right. That makes her worse than Kellie who, even if she's not faking, is at least smart enough to know she doesn't know as much as other people. Kellie doesn't make excuses for it either (at least not explicitly) while Sherri insists it's OK not to know the world is round if you have kids.

queen of disrepair Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

Opinion is as opinion does. I enjoy a good dumbing down - gives one that superiority glow that works in my dimly-lit living room. The problem is when the dumbing down is not merely entertaining (i.e. 5th grade) or infotaining (i.e. The View). I have students who believe that if it is on tv it must be true; I have to assume that they are just acting like apples not falling far from their parental trees. The lack of ability to draw a line between "reality" and "tv" is alarming. I love me some reality tv shows because I know that they are "reality" "tv" "shows" not real life. Too many people think that tv is real life and it's a far better life than any life not being broadcast. Isn't that one of the reasons why Youtube, MySpace and FaceBook are so popular? TV/Webfolk are opinionated, animated and exposed. They don't care if you think they are idiots as long as you think you know them. We all know that many people would rather listen than think for themselves. Dittoheads anyone?

tia Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

Hadn't seen that clip of Sherri yet... (Hangs head in shame) as a Christian, I am so embarrassed by the people that represent my faith to the public. We are not all unintelligent bigots.
As for Kelli, she's just doing what many women have done in the past (Judy Holliday, Marilyn Monroe, and Jayne Mansfield) to great success. Unfortunately, she doesn't realize that it's a label that will stick with her the rest of her life. She'll change her tone when she wants to be taken seriously, but by then it will be too late.

Emoney Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:26 AM EST

While I agree with many commenters that Sherri is the more "harmfully" ignorant (because her opinions and views are not only stupid, but also vicious), I do NOT agree that Pickler gets a pass because her stupidity is "cute" or "playful." Playing dumb (or actually being dumb) is nothing to be proud of, and women everywhere should shun both of these ladies as giving us all a bad name.

donner Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:17 AM EST

A couple of weeks ago, EW Pop Watch asked if we thought Kellie was as dumb as she claimed to be on 5th grader...the commenters here all proclaimed their love for her, how 'real' she seems and how it isn't an act, she's just being 'genuine'...which, frankly, is horrifying to think people enjoy watching complete and udder IDIOTS on tv and then celebrate them...is it any wonder that people can name the top American Idol winners from the past 6 seasons, but they don't know the first Presidents of the United States...

Cam Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

Who would've thought that I could actually miss hearing from Elizabeth Hasselbeck?

Garry Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

First of all, for those of you who don't know who Kellie Pickler is, have you been living under a rock?
Just to catch you up, she's an "American Idol" alumnus, and a talented country singer. And she really is from the sticks, and is no doubt genuinely naive about a number of things. She may not be so book smart, but she is warm, inquisitive, and un-selfconscious enough to say when a new word or term is new to her. I like her.

Sherri, on the other hand, is breathtakingly ignorant and irritatingly stupid--I'm talking low I.Q. stupid, despite her marginal ability to memorize lines for a sitcom or whatever else her claim to fame is. Her remarks about believing the world being flat (has she never seen a globe?) and religion signal that she belongs back in elementary school, not on "The View", which was supposed to be about reasonably intelligent women discussing current issues.

GOB Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

I'm sorry, but "trailblazing" and "intelligent" are two words I would never use to describe Katie Couric. More like "annoying" and "ratings-challenged." I think the main reason there aren't a ton of smart people (men or women) on TV is that the real intelligent people of the world know that sitting around dishing about hair styles and hemlines is not the way to make the world a better place. Intelligent people also don't watch programs like The View, so why does it matter, anyway?

Joe C Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

I was so fired up, I misspelled New York. Lol!

Joe C Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

I'm sorry, but EW celebrates the Reality Television genre that has infected our culture, and this is the result. Everyone who is complaining about these women playing dumb AND watches I Love Mew York, Bachelor, or any of that garbage, don't complain now. This is what you deserve, and it's not going to stop until you stop watching all of that nonsense.

mark in nyc Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

I agree with these comments. Kelly Pickler is not book smart, and may come off as flighty...but she is very young.
Shari is not just stupid but also ignorant....she is entitlted to her own opinion (and can raise her kids the way she sees fit i.e.transgendered) but she gives Christians a bad name.

Em Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

I'm not very familiar with either of these women, but I AM familiar with the "look at me, I'm so dumb and helpless" routine and it makes me want to puke. I believe that there are celebrities (and regular people) who mask their intelligence (however much they possess) because they think it makes them appealing to men. These women need to be enlightened! As for those women who really are completely clueless, we shouldn't let them spout their opinions on television.

Smart kids are funnier. See Alex and Jared from Kid Nation (below). "Pelvis has left the building!"

If it's an act, I like it. A little refreshing because too many smart women in a room is very "dull".

Pickler's stupidity is cute and playful. Shepard's is genuine ignorance and it's disgusting she makes six-figures being a complete moron on national television.

me of the world! Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

I was willing to give her a pass the transgendered kid stiff because no matter what I think, she's entitled to her opinion. And I gave her the benefit of the doubt about the whole "world is flat" nonsense, just because I thought maybe she didn't mean it the way she sounded. But this? Jesus came before the greeks? Christianity was around before all civilization? I can no longer deny it, Sheri Shepard is dumb as a box of rocks.

I am totally disgusted with Barbara Walters for hiring Sherri Shepherd. Who cares what her views are. It's apparently that she is dim, cause who would want to intentionally sound so foolish? Sherri is an embarassment.

Let's not forget Jessica Simpson, who has turned being the "dumb blonde" into a multi-million dollar industry (shoes, perfume, movies, etc). It's all a bit pathetic and entirely predictable to me.

Jason Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

I have no idea who Pickler is, but Sherri is clearly an honest-to-goodness idiot.

NineDaves Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 09:13 AM EST

hey, it worked for paris, didn't it?

GingerCat Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:56 AM EST

I don't know about Sherri, but I think Kellie is playing dumb, and I agree she should stop. Look at Jessica Simpson. She played dumb to keep herself famous, and now (1) everyone (including me) believes she really is dumb, and (2) no one takes her attempts at music or movies seriously or wants to spend money on them.
Playing dumb eventually comes back to bite you. As it should.

Stephen Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

Sherri is not playing. She's dumb. And from a yesterday's show homophobic.
What can we do to stop them? Stop watching the shows, buying the mags, giving them attention they don't deserve.

JJWalker Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:35 AM EST

Pickler is mostly playing dumb - Sherri clearly is that, uh, unintelligent let's call it.
