I Survived a Holiday TV-Movie Marathon!

Handcuffs_l How have you been getting ready for the holidays? Shopping for soon-to-be-outmoded electronic gifts? Baking various types of berry pies? Dragging warm and unfashionable clothes out of storage? Nope, not me. I've been busy watching Christmas-themed original TV movies. Ten of them, in fact. Not Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, either — we're talking about those happy, sappy, and sometimes crappy flicks that crowd the Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, and ABC Family around this time of year. Whaaaa, you say? Are you some sort of twisted self-hurter? And wait a sec... aren't you Jewish?

My reasons for engaging in the holy mother of all endurance tests were strictly professional: I was constructing EW's second annual holiday-movie-cliché checklist, which reveals how many of those well-worn plot gimmicks (Old Flames Reignite, Magical Occurrence, etc.) appeared in each of these movies. To complete this mission, I had to sit, sober, through approximately 900 minutes of flicks like An Accidental Christmas, Holiday Switch, and Holiday in Handcuffs (pictured, with stars Melissa Joan Hart and Mario Lopez).  And, oh, the things I witnessed during my movie marathon: The re-sparkling of teen stars from years past (Nicole Eggert! Shannen Doherty!). Feisty, funny grandmas who like their egg nog with extra sauce. Mistletoe mischief. People stranded in awful weather. The irony-free delivery of lines like "Do you believe in miracles?" and "I set out to offer somebody else a Christmas miracle, but I ended up with my own." There were a few surprises here and there; the characters in Handcuffs were edgy enough to use words like "boink," "slut," and "pornstar hair."

But here's the craziest thing to report from the trenches: I actually got a little misty-eyed during not one movie, but two. (I've blocked out the specific incidents, but I believe that both Lost Holiday and The Note were responsible for mildly activating my tear ducts.) What does this mean? Maybe I do believe in Christmas, er, non-denominational miracles after all.

Still, you're probably wondering: Dan, what did you get for your far-beyond-the-call-of-duty journalism? A raise? A promotion? Check this out: I received a phone call from my editor-in-friend, Dalton Ross, who said, "I'm in the middle of some much more important work right now, but I wanted to let you know: Great job on that chart." In the spirit of the holidays, I told him that his kind praise was truly the greatest present of all. I was lying through my teeth, of course. So now all I can do is to desperately hope that when he gets a free moment, he'll reflect back on all of the hours of my life that I can never have back — hours that could've been spent helping the homeless or watching reruns of America's Funniest Home Videos — and decide to give me a 50-inch 1080p flat-screen TV. If not, I'd even settle for some spiked egg nog.

Are you watching these new holiday TV movies? If so, which ones (if any) are great and which ones just grate?

ok woww.
clearly you people don't know what a good movie is.
like relaxx seriously lol.
i thought the movie wass great.

Snoofle Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

i really like "Noel"..it always comes on lifetime at christmas time starring Paul Walker, Penelope Cruz, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams. I always get misty eyed at the end when Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams meet up

JAM Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

SNOW is definitely my favorite. Tom Cavanaugh is adorable. Especially when he talks about living "North Pole adjacent" and the little phrases like "Good King Wenceslaus"....too cute.

Roman Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Shamefully, I will be watching "Holiday in Handcuffs" the next chance I get because I have a soft spot for Melissa Joan Hart dating back to the Sabrina and Clarissa days.

Danielle Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

I miss them showing "A Very Brady Christmas" every year. When Mike is stuck in that collapsed building and the family all joins hands and sings giving him the strength he needs to dig his way out. Does it get any better than that?! It's a good thing I still have a vhs copy.

marilinda Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 09:41 AM EST

i watched "the angel doll" on satruday about a poor little girl who has polio and her poor brother and his friend try and get her a doll for christmas.

spoiler alert, she dies on christmas eve and never gets her doll.

Diana Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:36 PM EST

I watched "The Note" the other night and loved it more than I thought I would. Genie Francis was great (no surprise there) and her co-worker from "Married With Children". I cried twice, rewounds a few parts twice. My DVR is keeping this around for awhile!

Cole Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 09:15 PM EST

The Christmas Card rocks!! See it, people...check your Hallmark Channel listings now!

Jill Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

Alright, if we are confessing, I Tivo'd and watched Holiday in Handcuffs as well. The still photo above was funnier than the movie. There were some juicy tidbits (like the drunk grandma and of course, Markie Post), but if Mario Lopez is the most believable actor in your cast, that's bad news. I'm glad to see I'm not alone (and I'm sure ABC Family has plenty of secret viewers or they wouldn't keep making these things).

el Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 07:17 PM EST

i always watch the cartoon grinch, charlie brown, and the old muppets christmas tv special, and muppet christmas carol.
Claymation too.
As for new stuff. I watched Shrek the Halls earlier. woo...that was horrible. what a waste of 30 minutes.

ho ho ho Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

Matt, I totally agree with you. but you have to give the "unfortunates" credit. no matter how bad Degrassi and ABC originals may be, somehow they keep you keep watching (in the case of the latter, maybe it's because they get the retread actors from our favorite shows growing up. Next year we get a "hey dude" meets "Salute your shorts" meets "Boy meets world" x-mas special). you're addicted. you just can't help it. i'd like to admit it's because I want to watch tv and there's nothing else on. but no that's not it. you make sure that you watch it- it's not happenstance. and while i didn't watch "holiday in handcuffs" i did flick it on a few times, just to get the vibe...and it wasn't a good one.

Snarf Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 06:04 PM EST

When I'm feeling nostalgic or sentimental (rare occasions indeed) A Christmas Carol (the Alister Sim version) or How The Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon or movie - they're both good) or A Charlie Brown Chritmas. Otherwise it's "Bad Santa"

Stephjanie Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

I watched "Holiday in Handcuffs" and just kept imagining the conversation between Melissa Joan Hart and Mario Lopez at the table read. Mario: Man, Dancing with the Stars did not open the doors I thought they would! Melissa: Mmmm, Slater

Nat X Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

I sat through "Comfort and Joy" on Lifetime last week. I was busy doing other things, and didn't want to think, so I put it on Lifetime. Nancy McKeon is a workaholic who bumps her head in a car wreck and suddenly has a perfect husband and two kids. I have to admit I teared up a little when the little boy helped cut up a Christmas dinner for an ancient homeless man. I was instantly angry with myself.

Dixie Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

I watched 'Holiday Switch' & didn't much care for it...couldn't get past the whole climbing-through-the washer thing.

I like 'The Christmas Card' though. They ought to make a law that Ed Asner should be in every Christmas movie. (It worked for 'Elf'!)

2 older movies that I like are 'A Season For Miracles' (which someone already mentioned) and 'The Angel Doll'. Every year I watch that one, and every year I wind up bawling and slinging snot all over the place. I did pretty well this year, though, mainly because every time I saw Keith Carradine I thought "Sargeant Lundy?"

And since i'm from TN, Dolly Parton's 'Unlikely Angel' is always required holiday viewing. It's corny, but compared to 'Smoky Mountain Christmas' it's a masterpiece.

miv Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

i was more prone to lifetime movie marathons when i had roommates, but the other night i found myself watching something with Nicole Eggert. What was that and wow- not to be catty- but wow...nicole, is that you? But props to her for being a very normal looking woman.

tim Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

nothing beats the two-parter (yes, two-parter!) from the 80's with Jaclyn Smith when she and her kids stop the North Pole from getting blown up by her husband's mining company!

Rae Rae Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

I have watched all the crappy holiday lifetime movies and have loved every single moment of it. what can i say i'm a sucker for lifetime.

Mandi Bierly Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

I sat through "Holiday in Handcuffs." And loved every minute of it. (Surprise to no one.)
I'm also loving that Hallmark Channel has been reairing its 1999 movie "A Season for Miracles," starring David Conrad and Carla Gugino.

I must put all my cards on the table and confess that I too put in time this weekend watching the Holiday movies including Holidays in Handcuff. I felt my mind starting to crack around mid-day Saturday afternoon to which there was no other hope for me cause I was in too deep. So, I settle down with a pizza pie, banana nut bread, jack daniels and coke, and cereal and starting laughing my ass off with a slightly hysterical bent. I know I was losing my mind (and perhaps my soul) but I didnt care cause I had my fannels on and a solid array of comfort food. Results, I am a crazy and I love those crap-tastic holiday flicks....including the solid ones like Noel (but I must confess that one makes me think seriously about the "dark night" of the Holidays).

Have a Happy Holiday!

Honeybee Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

My favorite of these films is the one with Tom Cavanaugh of "Ed" fame and Ashley Williams called "Snow". He plays Santa's son (with no Ho Ho Ho affectation) and she plays the lonely zookeeper who is taking care of a lost reindeer that happens to belong to him. Romance ensues. I think it was cute, funny and sweet and even a bit smart at times - really hands down the best of these films.

Matt Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

I will watch anything on TV, no matter how awful it truly is. From greats like Lost and the Office, to the unfortunates like Degrassi and ABC Family originals ("Au Pair" is amazing). I have far too much tolerance for bad television and zero willpower to change the channel.

I have to say the "Fa-la-la-la-Lifetime" marathons are terrible. I ended up watching far too much Reba, and some other show with a fat husband and a skinny wife.

And now I keep seeing ads for "Holiday in Handcuffs" with Melissa Joan Hart and Mario Lopez. Clarissa Explains It All meets Saved By The Bell? Oh the holiday hijinks that will ensue!! I just hope my roommate can change the channel so I don't end up wasting a those hours of my life. Man, I hope that writers strike ends soon.

Martha Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

Wow, Dan, thanks for taking one for the team here and watching these so we don't have to. You have my heartfelt thanks. Me, I don't plan on watching any of this dreck; I'll watch my trusty Christmas DVDs instead. But you should definitely have gotten something more for your toils than half-hearted Dalton praise...Dalton, give Dan some spiked eggnog, stat!

Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

I love "The Christmas Card" actually. It's a woman who writes a letter to a soldier, who comes to look her up. I'm sure you can guess what happens, but I love it.

Karen Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

For the last few years, I've always tuned in to watch "If You Believe". It has Hayden Panetierre at her best in her pre-teen years along with Ally Walker (currently on "Tell Me You Love Me") . And the ever good Tom Amandes (who bears a character resemblence to Jimmy Stewart). It's one of the better Christmas films out there.

And of course, gotta watch Dolly Parton's "Smoky Mountain Christmas" - mostly because Lee Majors is horrible in it and Anita Morris is wickedly delicious. And some great Parton Christmas music to boot!

I did watch "Holiday Switch" and it was horribly painful.

D Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

My wife and I saw the preview for "Holiday in Handcuffs" and said to one another, "There's no way we would watch crap like that." Last night, with little else to occupy us, we found ourselves watching crap like that. I said, on more than one occasion, "She kidnapped him, right?" I guess the Stockholm Syndrome works in really bad holiday schlock like this.
I should add that it was terrible. Not sure if that came across. Absolute waste of time.

LisaMama Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

Last year, I watched the one where Jenny McCarthy is Santa's daughter, and she has to save the North Pole from some real estate mogul who wants to build a mall there, or some such nonsense. It wasn't half-bad, actually, just because you could tell Jenny McCarthy was in on the joke and having a fun time filming those ridiculous "eat your cookies and hot cocoa" scenes.

Todd Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:18 AM EST

To cap off our second bad holiday movie marathon, a couple of friends and I watched "Holiday in Handcuffs" last night. I'm pretty sure we're all still in shock that we managed to make it through that whole movie in one piece. That was pretty much the worst thing I've ever seen in my entire life. More than once, we were tempted to scrap the whole thing and just put "Santa Claus: The Movie" starring Dudley Moore back into the player. I'm pretty sure that would have been less painful. In other words, it was just ho-ho-horrible. (Ouch. Sorry about that, but just in case the folks at ABC Family Channel are reading, that's the kind of witty dialogue that I could totally bring to next year's crop of crappy Christmas movies if they want to hire me to write one. Pretty sure that was better than anything they put out this year.)
