'Dirty Sexy Money' recap: Nick at night

Dirtysexy_l Don't you just love Karen Darling? As her proud papa rightly points out, she's clearly the most capable of the Darling clan. And she reveals several shades of her competence in this jam-packed episode, which marks a reunion of sorts for Peter Krause fans, since it's co-written by veteran Six Feet Under scribe Jill Soloway (along with series co-creator Craig Wright).

Last week, we saw Karen craftily getting a drugged-up Patrick to sign some mysterious papers while hospitalized — perhaps carrying the water for mom and getting the charges dropped against half-brother Brian. This week, she's still in bed (literally) with Tripp's arch-rival, Lando — Simon Elder. Only it appears that she's doing so at the bidding of dear old dad. (He was doubtless talking to Karen when he made a phone call to a mysterious informant to find out why Simon was seeking five years' worth of Darling financial data from Nick.) The twist is that Karen may be going off-message and actually falling for the shady, pill-popping, cherry lemonade-swigging "Russian," particularly after getting the blessing of Simon's royal ex-wife, who met him after plunking her head into his boat while swimming in the ocean. (Seriously, swimming in the ocean at night? Who does that?) But despite the fresh dalliance, Karen still seems to have some chemistry with longtime crush Nick, particularly at the family's annual Nutcracker staging at the Darling mansion.

Speaking of Nick, it's hard to make out exactly what he's up to. Just as he's beginning to warm to Karen and feel all brotherly-protective (or is it jealous?) toward her, cozily sitting beside her during the ballet, he goes and makes nice with the wifey with whom he still has not the faintest spark of chemistry. He even goes so far as to suggest that they sire another sibling for Kiki. Ironically, this comes after Lisa has been flirting with another member of the Darling clan: the irresistible Jeremy.

I love this boy. Or maybe I just love Seth Gabel, who also happens to be married in real life to the fetching redhead Bryce Dallas Howard (star of The Village and daughter of Opie). His scheme to pose as a poor starving artist for Sofia collapses when Lisa's ant-loving artist won't play along. So Jeremy decides to take up a sketch pad and use Lisa as his model — with a little weed as additional artistic inspiration. "We need to chillax," he says with characteristic charm. "This is a bad idea," she says. The sketch turns out terribly, but the marijuana seems to bring some clarity. Jeremy decides to come clean to Sofia (who dumps him, proving that she wasn't one of "these love pirates" who chase him for his money).

And Lisa confesses her fear that she's losing her husband — not to Karen so much as all of the Darlings; Nick's hardly home anymore. "If you were mine, I'd be a couch potato," Jeremy says and plants a kiss on her. She stops things right there, but clearly she's beginning to ponder some possibilities of a non-Nick (or post-Nick) existence. As she tells Nick later in a more circumspect recap of the event, "Maybe I wanted something bad to happen, to shake things up."

But this being Dirty Sexy Money, there's a punchline still to come. And it's a delightful one: The giant blue German sponge sculpture in her gallery has apparently soaked up the stank of maryjane and the patroness who forked over $150,000 for the monstrosity backs out of the deal since it reminds her of her pothead ex. And since Lisa isn't a Darling (yet), this time there are consequences to her slip in judgment: She gets fired. (Does anyone think that this is just part of the transformation of Lisa into a possible free agent, romance-wise, or do you think there really will be a Jeremy-Lisa-Nick triangle played out?)

Jeremy's twin is back in the picture — her absence explained, somewhat curiously, by the fact that she supposedly took Karen's honeymoon vacation to the Seychelles. While there, Juliet picked up the most gorgeous souvenir: a French-accented hottie named Kai (played by Alex Nesic, whom you might remember as the French-accented Hollywood tour bus driver Christian on Showtime's Sleeper Cell). He resembles a toothier version of Scotty (Luke MacFarlane) on Brothers & Sisters, not that I'm objecting. Juliet falls for him hard and he even puts up a bit of a fight when she tries to treat him like Brian Jr., i.e., a shopping accessory/beneficiary. "I didn't come for you to care for me like some kind of poodle," he says. She saves the biggest surprise for the end: It looks like Kai will be the first get up in her swadisthana (credit the secret virgin's new knowledge of sex chakras). That's the plan, at least, after Kai extends his visit from two weeks to...indefinite. (Personally, I give his stay about two more weeks, three tops — that's about how long the Jeremy-Sofia fling lasted, after all, and renewing those tourist visas can be awfully tricky.)

When Tripp isn't plotting Simon's downfall with Nick and consigliere Karen, he's seeking to reconcile with Brian, who's reconsidering his life after his bishop suspends him and orders him into counseling and a series of workshops. "Who doesn't love workshops?" Brian notes dryly. (I wasn't aware that there was a "state board" with the power to suspend men of the cloth, but I guess the writers can use one clause of the First Amendment to take a little license with another clause of the First Amendment.) "What's next?" he wonders to Tish, "leprosy?" — and it's hard not to sympathize with a guy who's lost his wife, kids, and career in rapid succession. Even as he begins questioning whether he wants to remain in the church, his parents rally to his side in ways that have aptly religious overtones. Mom washes his feet, while dad speaks of the "still, small voice of the Lord."

That voice, though, seems to be calling Brian to go work for Tripp. While I suspect that a valet job is not in his future, this is a truly interesting development. And Tripp's early reconciliation-seeking conversation with Brian seemed genuinely heartfelt: "I spent most of your life trying to find me in you and I couldn't," he says. "Now we know who to look for." (I admire the fact that the writers treat religious matters with some seriousness, and not just as a source of easy laughs. Brian, flawed though he clearly is, seems sincere in his turn to prayer and religion as a source of knowledge and comfort.) So the question now becomes just what aspects of Brian's real dad are we likely to see in him now? Keep in mind that the Dutch we've so far seems to be a rather nasty, duplicitous piece of work.

Speaking of nasty, duplicitous pieces of work, can we talk about Patrick? First we see him having "sensational" sex with his wife — then predictably running off to console Carmelita, who's convinced someone's broken into her apartment. Clark Babeison, Darling family chauffeur/Guy Friday, comes to the rescue with a surveillance plan, but it's not enough to prevent Carmelita's apparent abduction; she leaves only a suspicious trail of red nail polish on her pristine carpet. The intruder eluded the ficus, Clark reports to a clearly jumpy Patrick. Is this Patrick's usual jumpiness or did he have something to do with Carmelita's disappearance? Is he trying to get rid of her to protect his campaign and marriage, or perhaps to provide cover for himself to carry on the affair in private, removing her to one of Dick Cheney's "secure undisclosed locations"? These are just a few of the nuts that DSM-loving PopWatchers have to crack. And we'll have a good long while to ponder them, since this is the last new episode of 2007 (though there are a few more original episodes whose scripts came in before the writers' strike). See you in the Darling new year!

Yay! Donald Sutherland was nominated for a Golden Globe!!

Great episode!! Brian cracks me up. I have a feeling he will be the one to stand by Tripp, not Patrick like Tripp thinks.

Karen--not sure what happened. Is she falling for him and felt guilty? Is she NOT falling for him and feeling guilty? Did he hang something over her head like the sex tape? Hmm....can't wait to 08!!!

i LOVE Nick and Karen together. He and Lisa are boring with no real chemistry. I wonder if that is intentional?

Monica Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Why did Karen look so shook up when she sat down next to Nick and Kiki at the Nutcracker?

Tiffany Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

Brian in that suit walking into Tripp's office....it is official, I am more in love with this character. For someone who felt like an outside, he seems to be the one that is seems to have more "faith".

Love the chow. Brian is clearly the best character. He is complex and has the funniest lines. Great to see him without the collar, and looking forward to seeing him work for his (earthly) father.

Stella, this must be the first review you have read on here about DSM then- it's been lots of Lisa hate since day 1!

mslily Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 08:05 AM EST

Did anyone notice Lisa and Jeremy's heads looked similar? more like Jeremy/Julia than "lovers" (though I could tell thats where it was heading last week when he got so needy about art) also, Lisa seemed different this week, and not just being high (maybe it was bcuz she is normally just yelling at Nick). Simon had Karen's sex tape, hes probably behind Carmelita too...hes in everything...wouldnt be surprised if he was Kia's uncle either!

DanOregon Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

Am I the only one to notice the show seems a bit less like satire and more and more like a mainstream show. I fear we could be nearing "Desperate Housewives" wittiness, complete with plucked violin strings. This show needs to get back to the dark side.

Gorf Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:47 PM EST

Love this show so much! I kind of wished it had a better title b/c every time I tell my friends I love this show, they seem skeptical. Oh well!

I love how Karen is working with her Dad and not just a ditzy divorce. But, I can't tell if Nick truly has feelings for her or not. Especially after he decided to have another baby with his bland wife. A better actress might not make his wife so bland.

LOVE THIS SHOW!

Michael Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

I didn't much like Lisa at first, either, but she's beginning to grow on me. But forget the Lisa/Jeremy connection. She wouldn't put up with him for ten minutes. And thanks for the nice write-up. Most of the shows that get a real TV Watch don't get a write-up this thorough.

Wenjie Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

At this point, I'm not convinced that Simon didn't initiate Carmelita's disapperance. If he wants Patrick to win the election, it removes a potential hazard. If not, he could use her to destroy Patrick. Who knows...

MJ Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

I think that Juliet's new boyfriend stayed longer because he saw how rich she is. this episode was awesome and i can't wait for the new episodes!

Phil Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

I gotta agree with Stella. Lisa might not be the BEST character on the show, but all y'all wanting her killed off? COME ON. Nick just lost his dad, you want his wife dead now too? This is DIRTY SEXY MONEY, NOT SIX FEET UNDER..LOL

We started to see Karen being alot smarter than she portrays herself last week when she got Patrick to sign those papers all doped up, but I kinda had a feeling she was ALWAYS helping daddy out more than she lets on. Do y'all really think she only handles the Darling Foundation Charity work? Prolly not.

And finally, poor Juliet. Please kick Kai to the curb. he is NOT the guy she needs to lose her va-gin-gin (yes, I JUST made that up!) to, and gotta agree with the other poster, do we really think she'd fall for someone balding? Please find her a new love interest who's equally sweet, but better looking! And now that Ms. Armstrong is out of rehab, can someone PLEASE dye her roots before the show comes back in 2008? THANX!

Stella Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

Wow! I didn't know there was so much hate for Lisa. I actually like the character and don't find the actress to be wooden at all. Different strokes.

I just can't imagine Nick and Karen doing anything that wouldn't make look like Nate Fisher. Plus, there's Kiki to consider. I don't know. I just really can't see Nick and Karen being together, although I'm sure it will happen at some point if the show lasts long enough.

Robyn Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

Nick is mostly protective of Karen so far, but his feelings for her are definitely returning. I don't hate Lisa, but the character is much more interesting (and has more chemistry) with Jeremy -- I hope we see more of that! I love Brian so much; I think he must return to the church, but it's good for him to explore other things right now.

freezinginwi Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

Love this show. It really deserves a full re-cap. Maybe when it returns?? Was thinking perhaps Tripp is in with the chauffeur, so he knew where to tell the abductor where the camera was. Tripp has a lot of reasons to want Carmelita out of the picture. Even though it is Patricks chauffeur, he could really be working for Tripp.?????

Kelley Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

Sina, I agree with you- I loved the Nick/Karen scene. And when he went off on Simon-WOW! I think I finally felt the fireworks between Nick/Karen! I heart Peter Krause. Jessica, I agree with you- I think Ellen did her in.

Cam Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:26 AM EST

As far as the state board suspending men of the cloth, I'm pretty sure they didn't mean a government agency. I took that as the church's (Episcopalian?)state board. It was the bishops who made the final decision, right?

Rachel K Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

This show is so great! I can't wait for it to come back next year. Thanks for the great recap Thom, I thought it was particularly good this week! I too, like that the show takes religion seriously and explores it as something that people do turn to and use during difficult times. Brian is by far my favorite character at this point because he seems to have so many more layers then the rest of the Darling clan.

Jessica Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:45 AM EST

My money is on Ellen hiring someone to get rid of Carmelita.

Sina Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:30 AM EST

Too add, the scene with Karen and Nick looking at each other during the ballet were so filled with chemistry and just lovely. I can see why Nick feelings about Karen came out and he went off on Simon.

Sina Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:29 AM EST

Glad someone else is on the Lisa must die train. I love this show but last nights episode wasn't the best. Too, Too much Lisa. Even when she cries she's wooden. The producers need to oil her up first before they put her in front of the camera. I also need the twins in some scenes together. That's what makes them so loveable is their twin-connection. I want to see Juliet try to help Jeremy win Sophia back and I want Jeremy to figure out who Kia really is (would Juliet really fall for a guy who's balding?). I still can't believe Tripp is pimping out his daughter but those two are very close and I can see Karen helping out her dad take down Simon but I think she feels guilty not falling for him. I love Karen and I think she's too smart to fall for him but she does feel guilty since his wife (the lovely Latina Gina) approved of her. I miss Brian with Brian Jr. Those two were so great together and Brian is fine in black. I think Tripp will really take to Brian since he's Dutch son.

Kelley Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 08:17 AM EST

I FLOVE this show so much!! Still want Lisa to die- esp after last night. When Nick proposed to have another Kiki, I almost barfed. Brian rocks!! Thanks for the tidbit on the SFU reunion, I was a huge fan and still mourn that show.
