Trailer Blazer: 'The Dark Knight'

Darkknight_l Finally, here it is, the long-awaited official first glimpse — in motion, anyway — of Heath Ledger as the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker.

And, you know what? I feel a little let down. The problem is, there's no real wiggle room when it comes to interpreting this character. Everyone who's ever played him — from Cesar Romero back in the '60s, to Jack Nicholson (who probably delivered the definitive performance) to Mark Hamill on the Batman animated series — has had to blend mania and hysteria, and top it with a plummy renegade cackle.

Which is exactly what Ledger is doing. Sure, he looks different — that makeup does go a long way towards making him look genuinely scary, as opposed to harlequin silly — and the film seems to be treating him differently, with more heft, than in the past. But that's the job: play this dude like a force of pathological nature.

My favorite shot of the whole thing? It comes early on, with Batman standing atop a skyscraper at dusk, surveying his city. He just looks so...small. The comics offer that image all the time, and he always appears larger than life, as if his wingspan was wide enough to envelop all of Gotham. But here, you really get the Herculean nature of the task Bruce Wayne has set before him. He's just one man. And it's a big city.

And, all of that said, I still can't wait for July.

(But the Bat-cycle — sorry — isn't all that.)

for me he is one of best! he can suit in to any type of movies, from teenie bopper to a crazy villain! heath, you are my hero!

tdkfan Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Hey everyone, i recently got to attend an early screening of the movie and it does not dissapoint, completely lives up to all the hype and is just overall an amazing film. And to those that are interested the score which comes out on july 15th was just as good and the 2 composers
Zimmer and Howard will be signing copies of the soundtrack at Virgin Megastores in New York on Tuesday, July 15, in Times Square at 7pm, and in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 16, at Hollywood and Highland, also at 7pm.

This joker is like the maniac in "The killing joke." Which was not a story for small children.

For mature readers it was an exercise in the depths of the jokers wicked and sadistic dimensions.

Heath already admitted he hates comic movies but when he chose to do the role "The killing joke" was the story he was going to use as inspiration.

I've been waiting 11 years for this.
Chris Nolan has the strength of his convictions to make a serious movie while everyone else is so afraid to be laughed at they play it safe. He(Nolan) has the strength of his convictions and understands the material better than casual fans of the series do. Well done Chris.

Hope your in a better place Heath.

it's so sad that Heath is not here anymore, before the release of this movie. i'm still in shock & profoundly sad at the same time. My condolences to his family :(

Christopher Hickey Tue, Dec 25, 2007 at 03:33 AM EST

I was skeptical when I first heard that Heath Ledger would be playing the Joker in the new Batman film until i saw the trailer. Heath is going to own this film. I disagree with some people who say that Jack Nicholson's performance is the definitive Joker(and I love Jack). I beleive Heaths' Joker will be the performance that all other Jokers will be compared to. Loved every second of the trailer. I hope that the movie lives up to my high expectations. Few movies due, but this one,to me at least, looks like something special. We'll see. Only time will tell. This much is for sure though. Bale is the best Batman PERIOD

elena Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 05:50 PM EST

So, in lovely comic book land, The Joker is scary because he's a psychotic nutjob who is mentally unstable and reaks havoc on Gotham. The scary thing is that he's crazy (!), so he doesn't care about consequences or have limits to the attrocities. I mean, in the comics, he killed a Robin AND paralyzed Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl. He's scary. Even though he's a clown-ish figure, he's supposed to be SCARY.
So, many other Batman movies, I totally agree, made him into this funny-ha-ha clown that did bad things. I hope that B:TDK goes the comic way (totally looks like it will) and show us a scary, kickass Joker with an AMAZING Christian Bale Batman.
SO EXCITED!!

Francisco Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

I am so looking forward to this movie...up until I saw this Joker on the screen. This version of the Joker is completely misinterpreted from the source material. At least what was shown in the trailer. I will still see this movie but I do not like this Joker at all. Hopefully Heath will be able to salvage this character through his acting but from what I saw in the trailer I am unconvinced.

ep sato Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

OOOOOH Doug, that's a great idea! Guy Pierce needs to get another nutguard after that time machine movie, and who better to work with than the director who put him on the map?

The Riddler's another Batman baddie in need of a rehashing. The Jim Carrey version was an embarrasment (actually, the everything about Batman 3 sucked donkey dingo, except for Nicole Kidman's performance as the sultry Chase Mediridian).

I'm also psyched to see my main man Gary Oldman in the role of Commissioner Gordon. IMHO, Oldman's so good, it'd almost be worth it to see him in even something as bad as a Michael Bay movie!

Doug Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

I wanna know what people think about possibly having Guy Pearce play "The Riddler". He's worked with Nolan before on "Memento", and his performance in "Factory Girl" as Andy Warhol was pretty darn good.

Joe Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 02:15 AM EST

I don't really know how you can say Ledger is doing the same thing that Nicholson and Romero did...Ledger looks absolutely insane in the trailer. I always thought Nicholson's portrayal was a bit of a joke...but thats just me!! Movie looks awesome either way

Juanito!! Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

This looks sooo much better than "Brokea** Mountain"!!!

Nathan Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

The Dark Knight looks freakin awesome!

Emoney Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Omigosh, I couldn't be more excited! Heath Ledger looks awesome, and Christian Bale is the best Batman ever. I'm going to line up a babysitter now...

no way Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Batman Begins is highly over-rated as a piece of fine film-making, or even as a super-hero film. The screen play was just so bad, with a lame storyline, and the most smart-a$$ origin story ever. And I didn't even mention the score or the fight scenes. Then theirs Katie Holmes. Well... this could only be a step up, and I really like the cast, Ledger looks great! But I saw the 6min on Imax, and no improvement in the script department. I'd like to ask... if Ledger (as Joker) is standing at the street corner in broad day light waiting for his ride sans mask wouldnt that draw loads of attention? He puts the mask on when the car gets there... wouldnt those guys in the car had seen him? And yup, we have a new insanely ugly costume for Batman (glad to see he puts that much effort into design his costume... yuk!) and lame bat cycle (that thing must be incredibly easy to take out... looks like it has the worst maneuvrability). sigh.

monica Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

i have never been so impressed by heath ledger. terrifying.

jerrica27 Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 08:43 AM EST

All I can say is Maggie Gyllenhaal, huge upgrade over Katie Holmes!

agt Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 08:35 AM EST

Brokeback Joker!!!

JFlo Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 07:26 AM EST

you're just a freak...........LIKE ME!

CMV Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:15 AM EST

Sorry you didnt like the trailer Marc but i loved it. Had doubts about Heath Ledger playing the Jocker but he looks awsome and acts more like the joker that i want to see, an insane cold blooded killer. Love every minute of the trailer and i am sending the trailer link to all my friends and they too love it. Cant wait to see it.

ceej Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 01:56 AM EST

Word on the street is, if Hamill's Joker became a living, breathing person, it'd be Ledger in "The Dark Knight". Sounds good to me.

Nix Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 01:38 AM EST

THere's a glimpse of Dent at 1:21. He's the one whatshername the Maggie Gyllenhaal character is having dinner with when Bruce walks in.

I wonder if Joker makes a move on her. Then Heath can say ... (Gyllenhaal joke).

Nose Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:45 PM EST

Marc, I usually agree with you, but you're on your own with this one. I think this looks awesome. I have a clown phobia (thank you, Tim Curry!!) and Heath looks bats**t crazy (ha..bat).
I am not sure it's fair to compare Nicholson's performance as the Joker to this one. Burton's movies are just way too different than Nolan's, and there is no way he would have been able to play The Joker as campy and over the top as Jack did in Batman. I, for one, welcome our creepy, scary Joker. Can't wait till next year!

me Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:51 PM EST

damnnnnn

J from VA Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

After watching it again Ledger has me gettong more and more excited about seeing his performance. The theme seems to be that Batman/Bruce started this and the Joker is just the natural criminal reaction to a masked crimefighter. It will be interesting to see if Nolan has Batman accept his responsibility in this escalation. Also, if you look closely it looks like it's Gordon who smashes the Bat signal. Maybe he's having 2nd thoughts about this partnership. The plot possibilities are endless and I can't wait to find out where they go with this.

Andrea Lipiec Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:13 PM EST

After reading Batman and watching Batman for however-many-odd years now, it seems to me that Heath Ledger is going to make us rethink the Joker and how is life is conveyed to the world. You've got Jack Nicholson who has been mentioned as the actor who defined the Joker, along with Hamill from the animated series and Romero who did the live action series and they all did their part with great enthusiasm. However, after Kane died there were numerous people and authors who changed plotlines, character structures, and with that being said, I can imagine it would be difficult for an actor to portray this role without getting the third degree from a number of fans and critics.

I have a firm belief that Heath Ledger will bring a new sense of direction for the Joker and make us put in to perspective what this man, this Clown Prince of Evil is all about. He definitely went through a lot to create the Joker. Living alone for a month in a hotel---not to the mention the laugh is damn good too

Cece Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

I can NOT WAIT!!! I'm sooooo excited about Heath Ledger in this role. He hasn't played this kind of role ever and he just looks like he'll be so much fun. Yay!! Bring on July.

KR Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 08:03 PM EST

You are out of your mind. This trailer rocks. Joker comes off as pure terror inducing psychopath. I can't wait!

Gugoose Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

I Just realized the people working here at EW are a bunch of morons. This Joker looks like it will blow all the others, including Jack Nicholson, out of the water. He looks real, raw psychopathic, and crazy, but at the same time, not cartoon-ish and unrealistic. Ledger is prefect.

Snarf Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 06:31 PM EST

See, now this is why I don't like clowns. Yikes!

Thad Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 05:47 PM EST

a little lame. And not polished. What happened?

Stephanie Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

geez, what's with the bat-pod complaints(not so much on here but on another site i've seen plenty)? let's remember Batman is 'beginning' look at the batmobile? do you really expect all of the sudden to have Batman deck out a jazzed up cycle so soon? i think not.

I for one, think Heath is going to be amazing as the Joker. months ago, wheni first heard he was to be the joker I didn't think he could pull it off. But i now, after seeing trailer & prologue am supporting him 110%. he has one thing that Jack Nicolson(who i don't think gave a 'definite performace') some depth- he's real. in a creepy and scary way. Jack was too...comic-bookish. yes I know, the Joker is a comic book character. but Nolan has made Batman into something that feels so..real. Plausible. Something that hasn't been done. and the Joker, I believe, will fit that. this probaby makes no sense..but point is..I do believe Heath is going to be the best Joker..he's isn't the 'same' as the rest.

harry Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

I thought that he would be taking on the frank miller interpritation of the joker from the graphic novel the dark night. but this interpritation looks pretty cool.

dan Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

i cant believe you say that jack defined the role....i personally thought while he was entetaining, he lacked the scary and phycotic angle that chris nolan has found in the characters again...bravo to nolan for tasking a chance on ledger..from the trailer, this movie looks like its gonan be one of 2008 best

shelly Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

89 was just Nicholson in make-up. nothing else. from what very little I see of Heath in this trailer, he looks and sounds more impressive than that ass-clown from Burton's movie.

william Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

i don't know marc, your response to the joker seems cut and paste, Jack was the best because...he's Jack? that seems the validity of your agruement. break the mold a little and not sound so much like everyone else. I will guarntee you, come July, everyone one will be on Heath Ledger's nuts about his performance.

Doug Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

What was interesting to me was how they're going approach this story. From the trailer, it looks like Bruce Wayne is getting frustrated as Batman and the Joker tries to sympathize with him. It was also interesting to see Gotham's citizens break the bat signal.

Ceballos Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

I don't believe I've ever been more excited to watch a movie. And that trailer didn't even give us Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent.

As far as Ledger...just wow...in a good way.

David Bateson Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

Heath Ledger's laugh is what I think of now when I think of "blood-curdling" laughter. Ledger blows Nicholson away the few moments we see of him in the trailer.

Matthew Cruz Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

There was virtually nothing threatening about Nicholson's performance. It was two-dimensional (one of the dimensions being Nicholson's persona) and boring.

At least Ledger seems to be having fun; that means the audience will jump right into the mania with him.

I'm thinking of not renewing my EW subscription. They need new writers.

arryana Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

i like the joker look for this movie - kinda like a cracked-out version of the crow...

Hi Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:49 PM EST

I really like the look of this Joker. He looks scary-crazy instead of fun-crazy. It's going to be hard to not think of Jack Nicholson every time he's on screen though.

Ryan Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

I have never been more excited for a movie in my entire life. Ledger will be so great opposite the incomparable Bale. I want to see a clip of what Eckhart will be like as Harvey Dent though. As for the Batcycle, I'm suspending judgment till I see the movie. I thought the Tumbler looked stupid before I watched it in action in Batman Begins, so we'll see.

Heather Wixson Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:34 PM EST

I saw the 7 minute preview of Dark Knight on IMAX and if you have any doubts on Heath Ledger, sit and watch that. That clip alone eclipsed I AM LEGEND and made me giddy for the movie. And let's be honest- Jack Nicholson is NOT the definitive Joker. He was just playing another version of her personna. Give Ledger a chance. I congratulate Nolan on taking chances on actors you may not necessarily have seen as a particular character.

J from VA Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

EW sucks was right. Like all of Jacks performances the last 20 years, he played himself in that movie. The Joker is meant to be a unhinged psychotic not an aging movie star. I'll hold off judgment on the batcycle until I see it on the big screen. It may look better in extended scenes. While I loved Burton's Batman, I think Nolan as made the definitive cinematic Batman. Can't wait for his next chapter.

RakuMon Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:22 PM EST

Kathleen,

Please elaborate on the Smallville plot synopsis.

PS: This trailer rocks!!!!

EW sucks Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

First, get your release date right. Second, Jack is definitive? Riiiight. TDK's Joker is closer to the comics version than Jack's was. Jack was good, but let's be honest, it was Jack just being Jack for the most part. TDK's Joker is a pyschotic madmen whose idea of a joke isn't funny to anyone but himself. And those jokes are deadly.

Allen Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

The bat cycle looks pretty awesome. I think it will be great to see in motion. Plus it's like the early batmobile, a first draft. This film will rock.

Jane Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 01:08 PM EST

Hmm. The Joker as a slovenly, emo psychotic. No thanks. I think I'll pass. Give me Jack Nicholson's witty, dapper Joker anyday.

T-Rex Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

Anytime an actor is upstaged by the cartoon version of his character, it is a bad sign. This flick's going to make a ton of money but I remain unconvinced by Heath.

Allison Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

OMG I LOVED LOVED LOVED this trailer!!!! I saw it before I am Legend! I almost peed myself. I"m totally pumped.

Phil Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

The preview intrigued me. Bale does a great Batman, and as everyone else has said, Heath Ledger is completely unrecognizable as The Joker. Maggie Gyl. completely replaces Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes, I mean, they made Maggie look like her twin sis, and yes, not one itty bitty shot of Harvey Dent or Two-Face yet!! Thank God for keeping some things Waiting for the next 8 months, when we will see this preview ad nausem! Now if only they'd get around to casting this damn JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE....

Ep Sato Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST

Sadie put it best. Why sweat whether or not this movie's going to be good? Christian Bale's Crazy azz was born to play Batman (or maybe Neo, if his awesome stint in the Equilibrium movie demonstrated), and Nolan's got two nutguards earned between Memento and the first Batman movie he made.

If anyone has ever deserved a free pass before the reviews come out, it's this crew. They made Batman fun and human again, something lost with all this desire to make him "larger than life". He wasn't larger than life in the old 1940's strips, he was a great detective who know some serious judo! That's what I want out of Batman, not a rehashing of the Joel Schumacker and 1960's camp, and none of that Tim Burton overgrown little kid who used too many mushrooms while a total geek in high school miniature penguins who blow up the city crap!

professor74 Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Sorry to disappoint you, but I believe the movie comes out July 18th. This movie will be awesome. We haven't even seen any hint of two-face yet, either!

Sadie Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale are the best things to happen to the Batman franchise. I'm so excited about this movie!

miklane Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

Let down? Seriously? I wasn't excited about this film until I saw the trailer. It looks great!

tyler Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

No, Mark Hamill is definetly the definitive Joker.

Tamara Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

Oh man. I didn't think it would be possible for me to love Heath Ledger more than I did after Brokeback Mountain, but this? The man is amazing. Talk about disappearing into a role (as others have said). I cannnnnnot wait, either!

Em Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

The bat-cycle is LAME! Seriously, I laughed when I saw it. I am looking forward to the movie, however.

Arlo J. Wiley Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

Dude. You were really let down by this?

When I went to see I Am Legend, the Dark Knight trailer was attached. The cheesy Will Smith flick I could've lived without, but this trailer alone was worth the price of admission.

Kathleen Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

I can't wait. I just cannot wait. Until May, anytime someone mentions anything bat-realated I will do the pee-pee dance. And speaking of - if anyone has read the plot synopsis for the 02/21 episode of Smallville . . . dare I hope?

TekChick Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

I agree totally. If I didnt know for sure, I would never say it was heath ledger. And how odd, that he can do that! you have to wonder how he auditioned for the casting call to see Joker instead of pretty-boy Ledger... I think it makes him scarier, and I so very much appreciate the seriousness of these films. Im under 18 and I grew up on every incarnation of Batman, and I found the cartoon to be the most serious of them all! Im glad someone can finally make Batman - the most worldly possible superhero - in a worldly, logical light. The badguys just have to come with it.
*cant wait*
*cant wait*
*cant wait*

(and yes, the bat-cycle is disappointing.)

tuppy Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 08:56 AM EST

That looks really hot. If I didn't know it was Heath Ledger, I'd have no idea it was Heath Ledger. And I think the difference is that these characters are now determinedly NOT cartoonish as they have been in the past (circa Jim Carrey, Val Kilmer, Chris O'Donnell, etc.) — Ledger's Joker IS distinct in that he seems strangely human; we finally wonder what MADE this person what he is, rather than taking him at face value as just-another-villain.
