Snap judgment: Blake Lewis' 'Break Anotha' video

Dec 10, 2007, 12:00 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

Who wants to bet I spent more money on groceries at Trader Joe's last night--one that doesn't stock alcohol, by the way--than the total budget for Blake Lewis's "Break Anotha" video? The sad part is, I really dig this song, but clearly, the folks at Blake's label have him pegged for the clearance bin by Valentine's Day. Rated T, for tragique!

I love Blake Lewis. I might be his biggest fan. But Ido agree that this video isweak. But the song's amazing, as with every other song on Audio Day Dream.

Jamie Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

I am a huge fan of Blake (from his Kickshaw days)and I thought American Idol held him back considerably. All the contestants on AI are supposed to fit into this certain "pop" mold (just look at what they did to Chris Daughtry!) and I find that I'm very impressed with Blake's debut CD. He is very creative and innovative and I love all the songs. I think this video--although not shot by a big production team with mass amounts of money and editing--captures his style very well. Artists need to get back to the music and stop wasting their time on the "image." Just look at that trainwreck, Britney Spears. She was a "product" that basically had very little talent but had a great image until people finally started seeing what a mess she really is.

Matt Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

Also. The song and the album are both called "Break Anotha." And the dude's rockin' the frosted-tipped fauxhawk. Blake, it's too early to go retro back to 2002.

Jennifer Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

I'm getting less of a Justin Timberlake vibe and more of a Corey Feldman.

To Why Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

It's THROW. Are you 12?????

Stephanie Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

Ray T. He did but Justin's attempt was better because the editing was not short. The video looks as if Blake drew a line then stopped before he reached the middle. It's like in martial arts, you are supposed to follow through when you strike or throw a punch otherwise you risk a really bad injury.

Why? Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 09:53 AM EST

I wasn't impressed with the song but figured that seeing the video might make me understand it and make it grow on me. No. The video sucks and looks soooo cheap and Lewis appears as if he had no guidance whatsoever. While I am no a fan, it's sad to see the AMERICAN IDOL machine through another person into the mix and then spit out such homogenized music. A few twelve year old girls will enjoy it, but that's it.

boner Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 08:16 AM EST

So it looks lie he made it himself. So what? Blake is not a video producer. He wants to be a musical artist. Some videos are popular and the music is sheeat. This song isn't too bad. Where you going to see the vid anyway?

Penn Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 01:01 AM EST

Love the song, the video is just plain embarrasing though.

mrclean Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 12:44 AM EST

that made me feel all weird.

jason Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 12:18 AM EST

american idol, although still a huge show is beginning to fail in sales. and that video is NOT helipng. do they want him to fail? wow. what a bad video. someone somewhere is still raking in major dough from the show, but the players are just pawns. i agree, kat mcphee's CD was a good pop CD but i don't know where pop fits in these days. the show only has 3 more years (incl this year) anyway.

Jasmine Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:15 PM EST

I've seen more innovative, edgy, and interesting music videos shot by students with a camcorder and itunes. It's really sad.

jennab Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 09:56 PM EST

Hey, nothing to do with Blake, but Slezak...can SOMEONE at EW report on Led Zep reunion concert...? Come on!! Dying to hear about it!!!!!!!

What? Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 08:54 PM EST

It's obvious Blake's record label has no intention of seeing him through a career with their company.

RayT Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 08:18 PM EST

Didn't Justin Timberlake just do the Windows Media Player Visualization/Screensaver video with "LoveStoned"?

RobinL Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 08:05 PM EST

I like Blake, I like the song and I even like the parts that just show Blake. The sequences with the extra people are not compelling and add nothing. Hope the next one is better.

SH Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

I stopped at 1 minute and 23 seconds. I literally was choking to death laughing.

Snarf Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 06:00 PM EST

Slezak, that's TRA-JEEK

Stephanie T. Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

I swear that if video directing pioneer Russle Mulcahy ("Hungry Like The Wolf") saw this splatter painted video of Blake's, he'd be laughing his a-s off.

BrandonK Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

Kai-
It does kind of look like The Cheat from Homestar Runner made it on his iMac! LOL

Phil Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

Ok, that video is not even KINDA, it WAS cheaply made! But there is some shred of hope. Go to AOL Music and check out Blake's AOL Sessions. He's looking dapper, and honestly, his clip for "BREAK ANOTHA" is not nearly as shaky as this 3 minute mess. When the Billboard numbers are released Wed. I am sure Blake may debut higher than Jordin did (#10), but will prolly sell less discs, since she had the cushioned joy of debuting the week of Thanksgiving & Black Friday sales. I hope Blake's "A.D.D." doesn't go way of Katharine McPhee's debut. Both are great pop dsics, but sadly I don't think anyone outside of Idol fanatics realized these were what POP discs are meant to sound like these days. Both dsics for me are right up there with other pop standouts discs this year from Maroon 5 & Rihanna. And NO, I'm not some Idol-izer. in fact, being the music geek I am, I don't even watch idol religiously. But yeah, Blake's next video needs to be MUCH better than this!

Andie Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

If it looks this bad now, I'm frightened for what it'll look like in 10 years.

Christina Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

This video looks like some student project posted on Youtube. The actors look like they were just grabbed off the street

Kelly Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

it was bad granted but i have seen worse.....Gimme More anyone??????

Kai- Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

My 13 yr old daughter can make better videos on her Mac then this piece of crap.

faabmom Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

LOL ceej! But seriously, who choreographed this thing-my 7 year old son? I especially liked the clever "break" part with the fists thrusting downward to simulate breaking. Song itself is OK without video!

Julia M Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

That video looks like one you can get made at an amusement park in my area - for just $39.95 you can rock out to your favorite song.

Actually, scratch that - those videos look a little bit better than this one did.

peach Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

Yikes. I was a fan of Blake during AI but seemingly overnight he's morphed into a mix between Jamiroquai and Snow. The video is just sad and looks a late night commercial for a dating service.

PDub Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:50 PM EST

big fan of Blake on Idol, but at first listen to the CD thought, "eehhh...really? that's it?" after a second listen though, i am digging it. and the video...yes, looks homemade, but why spend the cash when, as someone pointed out, it's only being watched on youtube????

PB Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

It's amazing what you can do with your dad's video camera and copy of Premiere Elements ...

MJ Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:40 PM EST

wow it does look like it was very cheap to make lol

daisyj Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

Wow. Very "my friends and I made this awesome video with Ethan's dad's digital camera and my Mac, and we're going to put it on YouTube and get famous." Also, not sure why, but I was getting a Fine Young Cannibals vibe for a minute there and I'm pretty sure that wasn't a good thing.

(p.s. Have you tried the Trader Joe's frozen gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce? Love that.)

Nick Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

Hate the song. Hate the video. Blah

ceej Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

I made it to 0:27 before my retinas began to burn.

Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

It looks like an imitation IPOD commercial spliced with a bad after school special.

Cliff Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

MTV doesn't show them, VH1 doesn't show them, most people don't get Fuse. Why would you spend money on a video people are only going to see on the little 3x4 youtube screen? Yeah, it looks like crap, but if no one watches it...

Stephanie T. Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

Lewis has talent, but this video does not say much. The camera man needs to stay far, far away from the Koolaide. I got dizzy looking at the video because the camera was in and out and the "Musik Ladden" acid bits were not neccessary. Is he like Justin? Well, I think that this style was what N'Sync wanted to do but Blake improved on it. However, I would like to point out the only reason Justin Timberlake is so amazing is because of Timberland. He added more Ketchup to the Whopper. And yes, the only cable channels to see videos are Fuse,VH1 Classic and MTV Hits. If you are in college,MTVU. Viacom needs to decide to either play more videos on VH1 and MTV or just get rid of them.

phredd!! Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

First off, I have to say that i was very pleasantly surprised at how much I like the entire CD (especially, since i wasn't a fan when he was on AI). I actually listened to it from begining to end several times with out FF'ing or skipping. I really like the sort of 80's sinsibilities that are envoked. That being said, I think this videos matches well with the sound because it sort of looks like a cheesy 80's video. So it works for me.

Adam Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

I'm with Slezak here. I love the song, but that video was kind of awful.

NineDaves Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

this looks like something i would see on "on the lot."

Elizabeth Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

Uh.. was this a homage to early Michael Jackson? Or, are we in the generation that has completely given up on music videos since MTV and VH1 never broadcast them, other than for countdowns? Good luck Blake...

GeeMoney Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

He looks like a Justin Timberlake clone. Too bad he's not as cute or as talented as JT!
