Movie trailers that make you cry

Nov 14, 2007, 06:00 AM | by Joy Piedmont

Categories: Movie Trailers

Are you someone who cries a lot? I am. Pretty much anything might get me in a weepy mood. The Notebook? Check. City Lights? Check. The "toy boat" eBay commercial? Yes, indeed. Alright, so I cried watching 13 Going on 30, but I've never before cried because of a movie trailer. Then I watched the trailers for August Rush (Nov. 21) and P.S., I Love You (Dec. 21).

First of all, Freddie Highmore playing a musically gifted orphan is a sure way to tears with me. Also, I didn't know the plot of P.S., I Love You when I decided to check out the trailer, and I paid the price for my ignorance. A dead husband helps his widow grieve via posthumous love letters — I didn't stand a chance. Maybe these movies won't be actually as sad as they seem in the promos, but I'm willing to bet that I'll cry if I watch them.

Do these trailers make you cry, PopWatchers? If not, which movie trailers have rendered you a sobbing mess? (Watch the August Rush trailer below, and the P.S., I Love You trailer after the jump.)

I just finished reading PS I love you and it was wonderful!!! I cannot wait to see the movie. I cried, laughed and cried some more!!! The trailer makes me cry everytime I see it. I plan to see it on Christmas Eve as a Christmas present to myself. I love movies that makes you put things into perspective! I want my own GERRY!!! Plus Gerard Butler what a hottie!!! Counting down the days!!!

fay Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Good to know that I'm not the only one:)

I just love the "Ps, I Love You" trailer. I just can't stop crying after watching it.

Can't wait to see the movie!!

sue Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 09:19 PM EST

The P.S. I Love You trailer was great! I felt myself getting a little teary, but there is a lot of humor in it too. I think it shows that even when life throws you a curveball, you can still get up and go on with your life. Let's face it...ANY movie with Gerry Butler in it, is worth seeing, and then add Jeffery Dean Morgan, and the rest of what seems to be a terrific cast. I am going to see it as a Christmas present to myself...(along with about 14 of my closest girlfriends.)All right, all right... so we all just want to go to a movie during this holiday season that will maybe make us sniff a little bit, laugh a lot, and let us enjoy the numerous attributes of Gerry Butler! It might just also be a movie that will make us appreciate what we DO have in our lives, and remind us to enjoy the company of good friends.

Carly Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 06:10 AM EST

Excellent, I'm not the only one who does this. I just watched the trailer for "P.S, I love you" and I was a sobbing mess for at least a good 10 minutes, if not longer. Ditto for "August Rush" and "Kite Runner".

Lori Thu, Nov 15, 2007 at 02:39 AM EST

The trailer for "August Rush" pretty much told the whole story. No need to see the movie now. I HATE trailers that give away the whole story, including the ending. The only thing I hate more is when the trailer makes you think a movie is a comedy and it's not. Prime examples: "Living Out Loud" and "28 Days". For a fantastic example of a misleading trailer, do a YouTube search for "The Shine".

daisyj Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

Eight Below got me bad. I'm not usually a crier, but something about loyal dogs in peril just does me in. (The end of The Incredible Journey made a complete mess out of me.)

mc Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:11 PM EST

Someone already mentioned it, but the Kite Runner trailer just got to me. I think because of the way it relates to real events.

bootsycolumbia Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

The Pursuit of Happyness is the only movie trailer that has ever made me cry.

krikky Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

Oops...Meant to say LIKE a little baby. Couldn't see the board through the tears. Hahaha...

krikky Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 07:44 PM EST

JOY! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one! I've seen the August Rush trailer about three times in the theaters now and it gets me STILL! I think it's the sweeping, schmaltz-y music combined with the thought of a family re-united. That always tugs at my heart-strings. I cry little a baby at the end of American Tail when Fievel hears his father's violin music in the sewers, finds him and falls into his... I'm tearing up right now.

Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

P.S., I Love You has most definitely the worst movie title ever, and therefore qualifies for worst movie ever simply because of its title.

Jenn Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

I thought I was the only one who would cry watching movie trailers. Grace is Gone is the one that I will cry no matter how many times I watch it. The look on John Cusak's face.. owww.
P.S. I Love You made me cry too. sniff sniff, i hope these movies are just as good if not better than their trailers.

rachel Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

rent, p.s. i love you, august rush, all of those are so sad! also grace is gone

Marcus Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

The trailers for "Transformers" and "Live Free or Die Hard" had me in tears. Both were such a blantant violation of my youth.

Aurora Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

I love this post because I thought I was the only one to cry at movie trailers. In fact, lately I've been crying more at movie trailers than actual films. The trailers give you all of the most poignant moments and none of the disappointment of a full-length film. Some trailers I've cried at: The Pursuit of Happyness, RENT, and, though I hate to admit it, Ice Princess.

Meredith Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

yes and yes...ps i love you got me more, but that was bc i hadn't seen the trailer before. ugh

Jenn Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

United93 dissolved me into a weeping mess

Sally Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 03:36 PM EST

I hope to see August Rush this Saturday; but Atonement looks like another good crier.

Amber Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

Dang it Joy! I was fine watching the August Rush trailer until like the last ten seconds...huge tears just welled up.

Bertie Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

I'm bawling!! But it's not fair, I'm pregnant...lol. How hot is Gerard Butler??!! He's the top one now on my "I would never cheat on my husband, but if I ever had a chance, he's a freebie list..."

arryana Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 02:58 PM EST

the kite runner trailer gets me each time...there is a way to be good again. sniffle...

Alli Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

I saw the Stop-Loss trailer on Youtube the other night and couldn't stop the tears.

Can't wait for August Rush, btw - have been eagerly anticipating it since I saw the trailer at Hairspray over the summer!

Lori Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

Damn you, Joy! There's no crying at work, and yet here I sit after the P.S. trailer. The Rent trailer (the one with Seasons of Love) always made me cry too (as does the movie, each of the hundreds of times I watch it).

DalGal Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

I know this doesn't really count but in the late 80's there was a United Way commercial featuring Gene Stallings, who was then the head coach of the Phoenix Cardinals (yes that was their name then). He goes through a school with mentally challenged children and one of them was making a leather bracelet with "Dad" on it. And at the end of the commerical Gene is proudly wearing the bracelet because his son was the one making it. (damn it, I just started crying again). Everytime that commercial came on, my ex's family would call and ask if I was crying and his response was always the same, "Yep, she is bawling her eyes out right now"!

Dennis Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

I will never forget the trailer for "Uptown Girls," with Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning, making me and my friend break down in tears afterwards. The last exchange, when Brittany goes, "I don't see any grownups here," and Dakota replies, "I do," was enough for me and my friend to break out the tissues.
Recently, I saw "Dan in Real Life" and there was a preview for "The Bucket List," starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, playing two old men who have a list of things to do before they die. I'm tearing up just writing up the description right now. I probably cried as much from that two minute trailer before "Dan" than I did during the whole movie.

Millie Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

I cried watching trailer to A Mighty Heart with Angelina Jolie. The final shot in the trailer where the character Jolie plays walks away hand in hand with her son gets me everytime. Also, the Kite Runner trailer affects like no other every time I watch it.

Ben Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

Brokeback trailer, and the Akeelah and the Bee trailer. And Bee Season. Akeelah and Bee Season were so-so movies, Brokeback amazing, of course, but something about all three trailers just... worked.

Nat X Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

I'm totally lame and cry at everything. Preview-wise, I remember seeing the trailer for Titanic in the theatre long before it came out. I started sobbing uncontrollably when the stupid boat starts tipping and everyone was falling. I totally did not want to see the movie after having that reaction to just the trailer.

Aaron Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

I cry during movie trailers and then ususally wonder what the heck I was thinking when I actually see the movie (except for Finding Neverland. When the orphans walk in, I'm a goner.) I'm pretty much a victim of all the ones listed here, but the most recent one is The Kite Runner. That damn voiceover/scenery/swelling score combo gets me every time.

Lyssa Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

OK, so a while back, before my boyfriend and I lived together, he called me at home, and I was a blubbering mess. I was bawling so hard, he had to ask me twice what was wrong: I had just watched the "Finding Neverland" trailer online. I told him, "I'll know they screwed it up if I'm not at least crying this hard by the end of the movie." Damn, that movie destroys me. I love it. :)

Stephanie Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

For some reason the trailor for Children of Men always made me cry. I have no idea why but it struck a cord with me.

dave Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

I cried when I saw the trailer for "the story of us" with michelle pheifer. Turns out the movie was no where near as good as that trailer. With an Eric CLapton guitar score and all those clips of births and deaths, who wouldn't cry?...
Also, that trailer for "Martian Child" is a big tear jerker. I hear that the movie is also nowhere near as good as that trailer. Sometimes the marketing team is just better than the writer/director. :o)

Ceballos Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

It is so odd that you mentioned this, because I just popped in my "Ocean's 13" DVD this morning while i was gettign ready for work (figured I'd check out the additional scene) and caught myself getting pretty damn emotional during the "P.S. I Love You" trailer.

Lola Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

Gotta agree with Shannon – The Lion King trailer featuring the movie’s opening sequence had me bawling, particularly that moment when they lift Simba up as the music crescendos. Dang. I also got quite teary during the trailer for The Namesake, when the father and son were talking in the car… *sniff* Also teared up during the United 93 trailer, for obvious reasons. That said, I cry at EVERYTHING. I cried at the end of Terminator 2. Yep, T2 made me cry. "I know now why you cry..." Thumbs up!

Cara Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

The first time I saw the "August Rush" promo in a theater, I swear I was wiping away literal tears. But then again, I am a massive movie-crier, I've been known to cry in "Finding Nemo" and "Casino Royale" (really). Still, there's something about music in movies that seems to hit the waterworks button--I still turn the volume up every time the "August Rush" promo comes on, just to get that warm, fuzzy feeling :).

Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

the pursuit of happyness got me every time.

GRAINGER Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

the pursuit of happyness had me balling!

fredric Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Hayley... ditto on your comment. I just remembered Moonlight Mile, and the part that broke me in it every time was when Dustin Hoffman says something to the effect of "Let me have this chance to tell you something I never got to tell my daughter." That line used to create a ball of mess for me.

fredric Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

It really depends on the mood. None of these movie trailers made me cry, but I'm sure the movies themselves might. PS (the book) made me a little teary, so I can imagine the movie will do the same.

Lesley Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:57 AM EST

I cry at every thing imaginable, but strangely enough I can't say that a movie trailer has ever made me cry. I just can't get emotionally involved enough in them to start the waterworks. Though I can work up tears for a 30 second commercial. Hmm.

wheezy Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:57 AM EST

The GRACE IS GONE trailer recently did it for me. Damn you, John Cusack!

Jessica Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

The Bucket List. Jack notices he has a granddaughter he never knew and you can see (no words are spoken) the regret on his face.

jr Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

I cried when I saw the previews for Eight Below. Based on a true story killed me. The idea of leaving them behind killed me. And the fact that I knew some of them wouldn't make it tore me up. I was sitting w/ my young nephew waiting for some cartoon movie to start & I had a hard time hiding my tears from him. Luckily, he was so in to the preview that he didn't give me a second glance! Still haven't seen the movie. I'm sure it would kill me if i did!

Stephanie T. Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Michael Keaton in "My Life". I even watched it in a theater with a high school friend of mine. It did not help that I lost one of my grandmothers to cancer three years before this movie came out. Once the hospice bed was shown, I was in tears.

jennivg Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

The trailer to "Green Mile." I had just finished the series of novelettes and went to go see "Three Kings" with my mom and aunt. My aunt preceeded to call me a doofus.

Jenn67 Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

P.S. I love you made me laugh (in a good way...love me a chick flick). I didn't get teary at all, and I cry when I read the damn phone book.

Silv Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:18 AM EST

So I'm touched, but not crying (save that for the movies). By the way, is it me, or did the announcer mispronounce Gerard Butler's name? He actually said "Garrett" or "Jarrett".

Katie Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

I was at the movies with my mom when I saw the trailer for P.S. I Love You. I felt the tears coming and was trying to fight it (because, come on, it's a movie trailer and it doesn't take a lot for me to cry, but that was a low I've never hit before). I looked over at my mom and saw she was crying too, so all attempts to be strong were done.

andy Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

the PS I LOVE YOU trailer makes me cry, too. but mainly about how god awful it is. hilary swank doing wacky comedy pratfalls? it brings a tear to my eye that this untalented actress has not 1 but 2 oscars.

Hayley Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

The movie ended up being terrible, but every time "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" swelled up in the Moonlight Mile trailer, I was a wreck. A WRECK.

It was all dead fiancee, grieving parents, new love, hot Gyllenhaal, etc and I just couldn't handle it, I guess. I must've seen it four or five times before other movies and cried every time.

annie Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

I got teary eyed when Terrance Howard says "This is your son," in August Rush, but PS, I Love You? Man, did that bring out the water works!

Mike Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

I feel like I've seen these two movies a few times before. Robin Williams mentoring an orphan. Can't someone make him stop.

Gretchen Weiners Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 09:18 AM EST

I'm crying over how P.S. I Love You has been completely butchered!! Nothing like the book! Absurdity!

Shirl Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

Trailers, commercials, all the same. Keep the tissues nearby!

BrandonK Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

I think the only trailer I ever really got teary about was for "Amazing Grace". Something about the combination of a man's long struggle against slavery and the writing of the song got to me. Twice! I never saw the movie, though.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q6Cv5P9H9qU

Hanna Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:50 AM EST

The "Grace is Gone" trailer did it for me. I think it had something to do with John Cusack with granny eyeglasses.

Devin Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:46 AM EST

The trailer for "Brokeback Mountain" got to me. I don't know if I actually cried though. I just thought the concept of the thing was so incredibly sad. When I saw the movie I didn't cry though. But it was pretty upsetting.

Shannon Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

The trailer (and subsequently, the opening sequence) of "The Lion King" STILL makes me weepy

Heleno Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 06:29 AM EST

The A Mighty Heart trailer did it for me. Maybe that's what scuppered its box office.

Wes Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 06:20 AM EST

I thought the Once trailer was moving too. Also almost any of the Wes Anderson movie trailers. August Rush though? No. I snapped out of it as soon as I saw Robin Williams in Bono drag.

Joshua Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 06:08 AM EST

The "Once" trailer got me and so did the movie. i think there's just something in that music that touches me.
