Trailer Blazer: 'In Bruges'

Nov 29, 2007, 09:56 AM | by Christine Fenno

Categories: Movie Trailers, Sundance Film Festival

Colin Farrell's was the buzz that backfired. He stood out in Minority Report, but took ill-conceived risks with Alexander and Miami Vice. Can he turn his career around? His new role in Woody Allen's upcoming Cassandra's Dream, with costar Ewan McGregor, looks promising. But I think the new trailer for the oily little indie In Bruges (slated to open the 2008 Sundance Film Festival) is proof that Farrell isn't a movie star who's meant to carry giant films on his pale Irish shoulders. He's at his best ordering a pint with a twinkle in his eye — and, in this case, bickering with Ralph Fiennes about how best to begin a shootout in a little Belgian town built on a canal. You can download the trailer at the movie's official site or watch it below, though be warned that it's full of colorful, NSFW profanity.

So, to sum up: No bad hair and no bad accents. A delicious amount of swearing and shooting. A cranky Colin Farrell cracking wise in Europe. The result is a seriously fun trailer. Check it out and weigh in: Do you think this movie will do anything to improve Farrell's hype-to-success ratio?

Colin Farrell was truly great in "Alexander", no matter what the car crash and body count flick critics say. He was also superb in Tigerland, The Recruit, Hart's War, Ask the Dust, and A Home At The End Of The World. His acting style is so natural. No one acts with their eyes the way Colin does. He is likeable and has an affable charm that is so rare in actors these days. I cannot wait for these two new films of his!

RF is fantastic and quite different what he's done before. He knows everything about acting . It!s wonderful how he changes characters'

i want to preface this by saying I do not find Colin attractive, but apparently I find him amusing. I'm in. It reminds me of Snatch and that in itself has me sold.

CF looks better than he has done in quite a while. Though I agree, RF seems a bit out of his element. Apart from that, the subject seems promising: british small time crooks suddenly going ape (behaving like americans), blasting the crap out of a nice little foreign town. (Makes me long for 'Hot Fuzz'.) And a belgian one, at that. Remember how 'Belgium' was the utter, unspeakable, profanity in HGTTG?

Tigerland was a great movie. That movie was what made Colin Farrel a name in the acting community. Because of that movie, he was able to be cast in other movies such as Minority Report. Go see Tigerland for a truely great Colin Farrel movie.

Dunno about Farrell, but I'm for anything that gives Ralph Fiennes a sense of humour! Brendan Gleeson's always delightful and the whole thing looks amazing - it's on my list.

I don't know if this will improve Collin Farrel's career, but the movie looks hilarious.

This movie will rock because it's written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the greatest thing to hit the theatre in the past 15 years. His plays are seriously dark, violent and hysterical. Seems like "In Bruges" will play to Farrell's strengths as an actor, as well as bringing McDonagh's talent to a wider audience. A win-win situation for all involved. BTW - Check out the play "The Pillowman" for more McDonagh goodness.

It looks great. Finally, a movie to look forward to! Mad-Eye Moody and Colin Farrell. Something with Irishmen without bad Lucky Charms accents (see Heroes this season)

Wow, a Colin Farrell I may actually want to see. Who would have thunk it?

I find no matter, Colin Farrell is just SO darn likeable, there is something about him. But he's best when he plays a vulnerable part like in that movie he was in with Robin Wright Penn called "Home at the End of the World, a little teeny, independent film nobody saw, but he was brilliant and touching in that and made me realize he should stick to those smaller parts.

These smaller movies are much better for him - especially when he doesn't have to do accents.

By the way, he was great in Tigerland and he was good in Intermission (playing a psychotic criminal).

This trailer is hilarious, I can't wait for this now. Definitely give Colin Farrell the chance to redeem himself.

I don't think this looks good at all! Nothing in the clip really made me laugh, and that does not bode well for the actual movie. But your right about Farrell's buzz being overhyped. I'm still waiting on a decent movie by that guy (Min Rpt, but thats about it). Speaking of washed up, poor Ralph Fiennes. Capable of so much better. Looks like he's hamming it up ala Maid in Mahnattan or the abominable Avengers. He should stick to brooding roles or overthetop villains in makeup.
