'Made of Honor' trailer: Is this the right career move for Patrick Dempsey?

Nov 21, 2007, 01:57 PM | by Marc Bernardin

Patrick Dempsey has undergone what one could call—if one is prone to understatement—a bit of a career rejuvenation. The dude once best known for silly teen romantic comedies like Loverboy and Can't Buy Me Love has matured into a legitimate TV actor and full-blown star.

And with this newly discovered currency, what kind of movie does McDreamy choose as his big star vehicle?

The same type of silly romantic comedy he made as a teen.

Yes, it's My Best Friend's Wedding, with the sexes swapped. And it's called Made of Honor. Which, by all indicators, this movie is not. Why not spread your wings and make a drama, or a straight-ahead romance, or something—anything—that doesn't involve serial pratfalls? Are you with me on this one?

He's a good actor, and I happen to like the chick flicks he does. I truly couldn't see him doing something really intense like... I Am Legend.

Lets face it he's a pretty boy and we love him for doing the romances. Am not going to complain. Beside, hello, Sweet Home Alabama! He was the like 'Perfect' alternative to Jake. Too bad, Jake was gorgeous.

Hit Song in movie! This weekend a band Small Town Station released a response song to "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles, "Small Town Station hails from Groton, Massachusetts - a small town outside of Boston. The three brothers, Eric, Matt and David Bisceglia were inspired to write the song 'She's Just Another' in direct response to 'Love Song' by Sara Bareilles. http://www.smalltownstation.com

I saw this at a screening, and it was so good I can't wait for it to come out in theaters so I can watch it again. Alright, its similar to My Best Friend's Wedding and 27 Dresses, but it was romantic and fun and surprising. The characters grabbed my interest, and I was dying to find out who the girl would choose.

No move Patrick Dempsey makes is a bad one. He's getting out there again. Give him time. He's so goodlooking that any role he has is golden.

Hi Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

He'll always be Ronald Miller to me.

Eek. It looks like a loser when you can see the plot points a mile away, you miss Julia Roberts and you keep hoping the charismatic gay best friend shows up. Add to that the utter lack of chemistry between Dempsey and indistinguishable cute brunette (Michelle Monaghan?), and count me out. But hey, if it's what he's good at and people will buy it, why not?

dude patrick dempsey is golden after enchanted. this one will fly under the radar.

He's awfully pretty, but a great actor-not so much.

yah, besidesthat one movie with Hilary Swank, I think P. Demp is actually OKAY with typecasting himself as the romantic McDreamy guy. I know he can do drama but he said himself he doesn't like pretentious movies, he's an actor, not an entertainer (his words, paraphrased) so I don't see him ever trying to be a dramatic actor doing a period piece or an action hero trying to save the world. But he's Patrick Dempsey and he can do whatever the hell he wants. :)

McPlease Thu, Nov 22, 2007 at 12:46 AM EST

Patrick Dempsey can do whatever he wants to do. He wants to keep with what he's comfortable with and who can blame him. At least he's not trying to be someone he's not. That being said, He was quite good in Enchanted-which is a wonderfully pleasant and fun movie, totally worth seeing. Go into it just wanting to laugh and have fun with some of it's tongue-in-cheek humor. Anyway...Patrick Dempsey found success. And let's all be completely honest...This trailer is not nearly the worst thing that's going to have been seen in theaters in even the last year.

The title of the movie really sounded like a WWII movie.

For some reason, I'm really interested in watching Patrick do his best Teri Hatcher as Susan Mayer impression and fall over/through things.

ALSO, did I spy Dwayne Wayne playing the best friend?

Watching his Emmy-nominated role "Once and Again" as Lily's schizophrenic brother, you realize just how wasted he is on "Grey's Anatomy" and by most of Hollywood.

Interesting that his co-star Katherine Heigl's movie, "27 Dresses," has a very similar premise...a perpetual bridesmaid in love with the groom. She too has said (in this very magazine) that even though she admires people like Kate Winslet, she's a commercial girl.

JillyRo Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

Patrick was good as the mentally challenged brother on Now and Again. But that was before he was known for hair and his Mcstatus. Think he'll suffer from the Jennifer Aniston syndrome, nobody wants cam see them as anybody else except Rachel (in his case, Derek). Ironically, Jennifer was also well known for her hair!

Jewel Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

Patrick strikes me as someone who is loves to be seen as a pretty boy. In interviews and talk shows, he's well aware and seems to really love his McDreamy status, seems to revel in it at this late age (change of life?) and stage of his career. I think it's all part of his plan to get more women swooning over him while he can, because let's face it, at 40-something, he knows the clock is ticking on the romcom parts.

Verity Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

Patrick Dempsey has said that he's sticking with what he knows and what he knows he can do well...which is romcoms. So long as he's not trying to delude himself I don't see why we should care. The movies he makes are his decision.

Anyone else remember him in "With Honors?"

Ed Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

Dina well written!

...what I would like to see Patrick in is a nude scene. I'm sure if he pumps it up a bit he can come out of the water in skimpy swim trunks just like our new 007!

Ceballos Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

Other than these silly romantic comedies, I could maybe see him doing a well-written serious drama. I'm not basing that on his work on "Grey's" either (I think that show's a joke). I'm basing it on a couple of solid appearnaces on "The Practice" years back.

Beyond that, he's kinda limited, since I'm not really buying him as an action hero. Still, it's like Hanna said. I imagine his fan base is mostly women, so what's wrong with doing a movie that appeals to them (though one would hope he would do a GOOD one, instead of a lame looking one like "Made of Honor")

Jaime Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

Ughhh. Looks like complete and utter garbage. Why do they continue to produce these things? It's an insult to film making.

Dina Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

He said in a recent interview he wasn't trying to win an Oscar and didn't want to go the indie route. On another blog, they commended him for being truthful to himself and his limited abilities instead of being delusional like Jennifer Aniston that his talent is more than what it truly is and I agree.

WH Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

Didn't he try to go drama in that Hilary Swank movie? The audiences stayed away in droves. Personally, I'd love to have another great romantic comedy actor. It's been a long time since a man tapped that vein as a career. I'm looking forward to seeing him in tights this afternoon as I drag the kids to "Enchanted".

Hanna Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

Considering his main fan base is composed of women thanks to Grey's, doing a romcom makes sense. kind of. my only question during this trailer was "Where's Julia Roberts"? I kept expecting her to pop up....

Sally Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

Actually when I saw he was in Enchanted I said "wtf?", because he's what? 40 years old or something. And this doesn't look too appealing. He had a small role in Freedom Writers and you would expect him to go down that path...but maybe this is as good as it gets for him?
