Who else remembers this?: Milla Jovovich's singing career

Nov 26, 2007, 01:05 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music, Who Else Remembers This?

Yesterday, waiting in line in the self-scanning aisle at the A&P, I distracted myself by flipping through a bargain bin of CDs. Just to the left (to the left) of Maria Conchita Alonso's Mirame, I found Milla Jovovich's The Divine Comedy. I had totally forgotten the Resident Evil actress ever had a singing career, but seeing the disc brought back memories of her weird little video for "Gentleman Who Fell," which was a staple on The Box when I first moved to New York City back in 1994.

Maybe it was nostalgia for a time when you could actually find videos on TV 24-7. Maybe it was the unbeatable price -- just a dollar or so more than the combined cost of a mango, a 12 oz. bottle of orange juice, and a container of Epsom salts. (Seriously!) Maybe it was the fact that there was no cashier to judge my questionable taste in music. But The Divine Comedy is now part of my varied, scary music collection.

Oh, and before you leave a comment below, check out Jovovich's video. Because, really, here at PopWatch, we strive to make sure all mockery is informed mockery.

I just saw this video on a rerun of Beavis & Butthead, where they show the videos in between the cartoon clips! Reminds me of the good olde days of watching MTV's late night show, what was it called..Insomniac theater? That was great viewing after coming home from the bar, with a bag of Taco Bell. Man, we must be getting old...Oh well, at least we have Sponge Bob to keep us entertained now...

Fantastic track.
Good range within the voice, had no idea this girl was capable of such singing, its great. She really should have done more as a singer, but I guess movies provide the big bucks at the end of the day.

Milla Jovovich won't go to Las Vegas anymore

Maybe it made sense before it was translated from whatever her first language is.

Amy Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

Not only do I remember the CD, I have a copy (signed, by the way) and I saw her on the tour supporting the CD. So many people don't believe me when I tell them that she had a CD out...funny you mention it! :)

Rebekah Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 12:06 AM EST

I remember her as a singer. I LOVED "The Gentleman Who Fell." I was sad that she didn't do more as a singer.

Sam Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 11:27 PM EST

I am another one who thought I was the only one who loved this CD. I have had it in my collection since it first came out. I think I purchased it based on an EW review, but it is very good. Much better than her acting and modeling.

E.B. Berman Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 09:14 PM EST

I'm glad to see Milla and her album got a fair deal of support here. My sister bought this CD soon after (before?) starting college and I nicked it from her collection. Though my musical tastes have changed since then, I still rather like this disk.

Ellipsian Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

Ah Slezak, how did I know that out of all of the PopWatch writers, you would be the one to resurrect "The Divine Comedy"? An album which, BTW, I'm willing to defend as being quite good, actually. I really like most tracks and am waiting until Ms. Jovovich quits putting out so many happy-cr@ppy films and can give us something equally divine, musically speaking.

Scott Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 08:18 PM EST

Well I thought the video was adorable. I think the song was like just before I got into pop music (I'm 22 now, so that puts me at 9ish when that song came out?). I never realized that this was Milla. I adore her to a painful degree. Painful because she occasionally makes crap, and I put up with it because she is just so Millalicious.

p.s. i want to write for PopWatch when i grow up...

CineRam Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

The inspiration for this vid seems to be Maya Deren's film "Meshes of the Afternoon", an experimental short film made in 1943 (according to imdb). I can't say I recommend it, but I had a good laugh in the comedy "Ghost World" when Thora Birch's daffy art teacher (Illeana Douglas, priceless as always) shows her class a short film that she made...a film which looks an awful lot like "Meshes". What made this even funnier was that my own teacher showed this film during a class I took in college. I wonder, what's the point of showing an abstract short in a class for feature film screenwriting? It's not like the thing is gonna help anybody learn the basics of story structure.

KPE Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

Does anyone else think that, in this video, she looks like the girl who plays Abby on NCIS?

Kirsten Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 06:48 PM EST

I always liked this song. I have the album somewhere in this house. Time to find it.

MultiPass Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

own that CD and always liked it. Didn't even know who she was when I got it, just dug a song I heard on Triple A radio. She has 2 out I believe, plus her website has some musical musings. She should do another one. Got more talent than most plasic divas these days!

Starfox Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

This video seems to be heavily influenced or a direct homage to the Salvador Dali / Luis Bunuel collaboration "Un Chien Andalou."

Will Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

I've always loved that song...still do.

Chris Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

I love that cd and still listen to it without any shame whatsoever!

BOTR Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

I remember seeing that video on an episode of Beavis and Butthead.

daisyj Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

You know, maybe we need a new edition of the PW confessional: Albums I secretly love that I didn't think anyone else owned (non-hipster-posing edition).

kevin Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

I love this song, too!!! I have the CD somewhere in a box in my apartment... I need it on my iPod now!

Laurie Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

"The Gentleman Who Fell" is on the soundtrack to "The Rules of Attraction." I love that soundtrack and I actually love that song. I went to Milla's website after hearing the song and listened to a few others. Not bad, not bad. I have no idea what the song is about or what it means, but whatever!

dma69 Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:14 PM EST

I remember this song. It actually wasn't bad at all.

I also remember The Box, a channel that actually showed videos, not pointless reality shows starring nobodies no one will remember in 10 years, if not sooner. Ah, the good ole days...

Martha Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

I'd forgotten all about this! Considering the dreck that other Hollywood singer wannabes put out there, this isn't half bad. And the video, while derivative, is at least kind of bad Bunuel instead of usual half-clothed on a beach hooey.

B Ro Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

OMG, I loved the Box! We couldn't get cable in our dorm rooms, but somehow, this gem of a channel always got reception. And the songs... I believe my all time fav was "That's Just My Baby's Daddy."

Jeremy Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

I bought that cd when it originally came out and actually still listen to it every once in a while. Good stuff.

Anna Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

The cinematography on that video was terrific.

judge jru Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

Holy crap. I thought I was the only one who still listened to this CD. Milla needs to stop making rubbish horror/sci-fi/action movies and instead devote her time to recording a new album. Like ASAP.

EP Sato Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:56 PM EST

her voice isn't bad, but the background music and video made me want to Run Away from Lola

Brainiac Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

The video was, um, different.

The song was not exactly my cup of tea, but she's actually not a bad singer. Many mainstream recording artists are much worse. She's got some vocal ability.

Jim Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

I have the CD too---actually searched it out about a year ago and found it at FYE. A friend had me listen to it years ago and some of the songs are really, really good. I think it was hearing "Gentlemen Who Fall" either in a supermarket, drug store or some such place got me interested in it again.

Red Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

My old roommate was (is?) a HUGE fan of this album. You two actually have a lot in common Slezak

Tiffy Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Seriously, I don't know which was worse; the singing or the video. I want those four minutes of my life back.

c.e. Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

I bought the CD when I thought ALL she did was music and waited a few years before I realized Loreal and Resident Evil tore that little dream away.

TheJester Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

This is so funny, because I was driving back from my Grandma's after Thanksgiving with the iPod on shuffle, and one of the songs from this album came on. I've been convinced I was the only one who owned it! Good stuff, in my opinion.

daisyj Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

You can still buy Epsom salts?

Zach Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

One of my all-time favorite songs... seriously.

hemisphire Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:49 PM EST

I have it and still like it - every time I see her in a movie, I wonder if she'll do another one.

Miss Dahlia Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

The video may be freaky, but the album is actually quite good. It's one of the only CD's (out of thousands I own) I've listened to consistently since it came out, and it has a permanent place in my iPod. Which is weird, because I really can’t stand her as a model, actress or fashion designer…

Katy Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Yikes! Though I do remember her singing in "Dazed and Confused." Speaking of singing actors, how on earth could EW leave Zooey Deschanel off its list of favorites??!! Criminal.

Erin Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Wow, that is a strange and not-so-great video! I have this CD and I still listen to it, she's actually quite a good singer. She also did some good singing in that movie The Claim, but I don't think the soundtrack included it.

Tamara Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

Aww, I have the CD and think it's pretty listenable. No shame there, Michael!

On another note, aren't you so excited for Blake Lewis's CD next Tuesday?

Mel Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

Well at least it is better than Tyra Banks' music video, I like the homage to Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon
