'Friday Night Lights': Back in the saddle

Categories: Mini TV Watch

Fnl_l Best episode of the season so far, am I right?

Friday Night Lights got back in the groove this week. Let me count the ways:

1. Kyle Chandler's Coach Taylor (pictured, center) went through some satisfyingly difficult times settling back into his old job, which included having Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) articulate the betrayal that the rest of the team felt when he left for his college job.

2. Ol' Coach also had a difficult time dealing with wife Tami (welcome back to the playful side of Connie Britton) and her interest (or lack of interest) in, as it was delicately put, "getting back in the saddle." Post-partum sex drive is tricky stuff.

3. What a great episode for Landry (Jesse Plemons). Right off the bat, we had a welcome return to some Saracen-Landry byplay when the hound-dog-baleful Matt contemplated getting back together with Julie. Landry's "No, no, no, no" — spoken with the shorthand old friends communicate with — was both perfect and funny.

As for football-Landry, the way the show worked him onto the field, even allowing him a mini-triumph, was both sly and dramatic.

And romantic-Landry? Well, this time the series really stepped up and did that dead-body-in-the-water subplot some justice. It took us on a nice arc. We began the episode with Landry so understatedly joyous about his evolving relationship with Tyra (Adrianne Palicki); then when Tyra became a "person of interest," as one cop said regarding the dead body case, Landry's dad (Glenn Morshower, proving we only saw about a tenth of his talent on 24) forbade her to see him, and Landry's world was crushed just at the moment he should have felt great. Yeah, it was a little lame that Tyra did the TV-cliché thing of not telling Landry the real reason why she was breaking it off with him, but the whole rhythm of the subplot was solid: built-up and dashed hopes.

4. And the Jason-Riggins-Lyla Mexican adventure? At first I was skeptical of the world's smallest "booze cruise," but pretty soon I thoroughly appreciated all the carefully modulated emotional currents that ran between all three of them. (The only real storytelling pothole in this episode: Why in the world would Coach Taylor not be looking around the Panthers locker-room and asking where Riggins and Jason Street were?)

But I'm not lodging any big complaints. This was the Friday Night Lights we love — they even played some football! Way to go, Matt, in at least temporarily dumping Julie! (We're pretty sure she'll mend her ways, both with Matt and her parents, and maybe even give baby Gracie a hug before too long, aren't we?)

I'm totally immersed again, really wanting to see how Tyra is going to withstand this latest setback in being turned into a bad girl in a completely new way. Landry's father saying with devastating finality, "You stay away from my boy" — not because she's a tramp, but because he suspects she's done something so wrong she's caused his son to lie to him for the first time — that is powerful stuff.

To quote Lyla, I gotta go pray — that next week's episode is just as good.

This is the best show on tv..I just can't get enough of FNL!

Nix Tue, Nov 6, 2007 at 10:58 PM EST

Ken, I watched this episode. I enjoyed it. Congratulations.

d Tue, Nov 6, 2007 at 05:50 PM EST

Loved the episode...Lyla is a worthless character when she's not around Tim Riggins I've come to realize. Always love Coach and Tami, I hope my marriage is like there's after 16+ years. Two complaints---not sure I like the whole build Landry up and break him down storyline and why have the benched Smash?!?!?!? Is he shooting a movie or something?

Anna Tue, Nov 6, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

I live in London and stumbled upon this show and love it! However the only way i can watch is by buying the episodes on iTunes. Does anyone know why Season 2 isn't available?

CC Tue, Nov 6, 2007 at 08:07 AM EST

I'm just posting to agree. Kick ass in almost every way.

panther Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 11:18 PM EST

Great episode. I watched it three days later, please count it on the ratings!

Virginia Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 09:39 PM EST

CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS, CAN'T LOSE!! Love it. Best episode yet.

DanOregon Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

I'm hoping the writers strike will help keep this show on the air. The numbers really don't look good, but I'm going to keep watching. Now that Landry is a hero is his downfall assured?
We need more Buddy!

Catmama Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Yeah, I was totally digging every second of this episode. The interactions between the characters were right on--so funny, poignant, ironic, heart-breaking--everything we love abt FNL. Everyone connected with this show should get an Emmy!

Jakester Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

I watched next week's preview in slow motion.... don't know who was kissing Matt, but Landry and his dad set the stationwagon on fire! And I tought the "new player" was the kid Lyla met at the juvu facility.... could be interesting.

Dawn Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

Back in the saddle indeed. LOVED the "Y Tu Mama Tambien" homage....it even looked like the same cantina! Other than that, I agree that I think the writers are ready to be rid of this whole murder storyline...hopefully next week's Landry/Dad scene takes care of business for real.

PAIGE Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

BEST EPISODE OF THE SEASON (SO FAR)... I'm so happy that the characters i love are doing the things the should be doing... i was almost worried even though id go to the ends of the earth with these characters... i knew all we needed was a bit of patience and our show would be back... well.. IT"S BACK!

Becky Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

What a great episode!! Finally with this episode the producers are getting "back in the saddle" of last season. This was a great episode, and I think this should finally get EW.com to make this into an official TV Watch. And not just on the popwatch page. I think it's definitely about time for it!!

Kristi Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

The episode was amazing, i definitely think it deserves a full blown TV watch by now - Right? Anyway, the only 'huh?' moment of the episode for me was Lyla kissing both Riggins and Street after the syrgery debacle, HUH?!?! Seriously, WHAT??!?!

shonna Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

definitely the best episode of the season - it just keeps getting better. i finally liked matt's character when he stood up to julie - i had zero respect for him until that moment. my heart broke for landry and tyra - especially tyra - who does she have now? at least landry has a good family and matt. the coach/tami storyline was so well done - love the portrayal of a realistic marriage. absolute fave part of show: the dynamics between lyla, riggins and street. lyla loves them both and now i think they both know it and are ok with it.

phoebesnow Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

Anyone know how the writers' strike will effect this show? I hope they have finished writing many episodes, because I need my FNL fix! Definitely my favorite show on TV. Because I'm a new mom myself, I loved how they handled the six week "green light" story. It's funny because it's true!

FNL Rocks Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 06:55 AM EST

I'm not even a football fan, but a perfect night of television would be 'Sports Night' followed by FNL. Both shows really get the importance and absurdity of sports, and the absolute joy of getting caught up in the game.

Best episode so far!!

Move this Show to Monday or Thursday @10PM! Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 05:54 AM EST

When Tyra told Landry to "take a look in the mirror"(as to why she'd ever be with him), my heart just broke for him. On the upside, I on't think he bought her reasons for dumping him.

Jer Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 02:03 AM EST

Dang it. That was a pretty arrow too...

Armando Dillo Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

I think Matt was kissing Lois, Julie's friend, in the previews for next week.

LisaMama Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 06:14 PM EST

Things I LOVED about this week's episode 1. the post-baby sex talk between Coach and Tami was 100% realistic.
2. Coach calling Landry "Lance".
3. Matt finally standing up to Julie!
4. Matt and Crash calling a truce.

One thing I didn't like:
1. It stated out awesome, with Lyla sweeting dancing with Jason and kissing him BUT then she has to kiss Riggins?!? In front of Jason? Yech!

Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

song at the end of the episode:
"if i could" - blue merle
song when street jumps off the boat:
"to build a home" - cinematic orchestra

Pete Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 03:52 PM EST

I don't know if anyone else caught it in the promo for next week, but in a quick frame shot you can catch "Lance" (sorry I couldn't help it) Landry & his father setting his car on fire. So I'm guessing he comes clean to his dad, and his dad decides to help him cover it up instead of turning his son in???

john Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

What was the song at the end of the back in the saddle episode? anyone know?

Jer Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

I am actually siding with the haters on this one. I realize that a loss would eliminate story possibilities later in the season, but that incredibly exaggerated pass interference and then incredibly late flag for it at the end was neither entertaining nor surprising... Even in its down episodes, it's still better than 90% of TV, but I thought this was the weakest of the year... For a few seconds, I was considering the storyline possibilities of a season lost on a ref's missed call and the drama that could have come from that... The Tyra/Landry plot, which I thought was improving a little after last week crashed back down with the "Leave mah boy alone" development... Landry's dad didn't address the possibility that his son is with the out-of-his-league girl because he did her a big favor? I didn't enjoy this one, but I am enjoying the Coach/Smash/Matt/Julie side of things... Street & Co. need to get back from Mexico quick too...

RakuMon Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Is anyone else having a hard time accessing the second pages of the tv watches? Everytime I click on 'next page' it sends me to a blank one. :(

lisa Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 10:37 AM EST

"Clear eyes ,Full hearts,Cant lose" must be the motto for this wonderful show!!! I love every minute of it.The whole show is worth watching. I loved the last scene w/ Tami & Coach so true to form.Hope more people start watching. Its the best on TV!!!!

jake rigby Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 08:17 AM EST

This show is the worst thing on tv.

I don't know a single person who watches it.

Tony Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 04:02 AM EST

Wonderful, wonderful episode. This really showed FNL getting "back on the saddle", for lack of a better phrase. I loved Matt growing a pair to stand up to Julie. Pretty gutsy of him also to draw that parallel to Coach Taylor and tell im to his face that both father and daugther were guilty of "using" someone else as a stepping stone. The Tyra/Landry story was heartbreaking, poor guy, Landry.

Overnight Ratings Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 01:53 AM EST

At 9 p.m., ABC pulled ahead with the highest-rated program of the evening, "Women's Murder Club," 6.4/11. CBS dipped to second place with "Moonlight," 4.9/9, ahead of NBC's "Friday Night Lights," 3.6/6. The CW improved hour-over-hour with a 2.9/5, while FOX remained steady in last place.
FNL was down roughly 100,000 viewers versus last week's episode. NBC-move this show!

Amy Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 01:12 AM EST

NBC-

Please don't cancel Friday Night Lights!!!!! It's my favorite show-even better than Grey's Anatomy.

yout Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

Good episode, but definitely not the best of the series. That would be season 1, episode 1.

Laura Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 11:08 PM EST

LOVE this show. Have been a fan since season 1 and was a little worried, like everyone else, that this season was losing it a little. But, this episode was perfect. I absolutely loved Glenn Morshower on 24 and still refer to him as "Aaron" on FNL. I think he and Landry are perfectly cast as father/son. I was a little worried how this whole Landry/Tyra murder plot would unfold, but I think that they are going to work it out well according to the writers. I just wish more people and fans were behind this show to keep it on the air I can't wait til next week!

Nicole Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:49 PM EST

I was so impressed with this episode!!! I have been a huge fan of season one, and dismayed at the lackluster start to season two. However this episode has completely restored my faith in the show and I am so so glad for that. Even the Landy/Tyra thing is beginning to play out in a way true to the show. And El Tee, I TOTALLY thought about "Y Tu Mama Tambien" during that last scene in Mexico - I was thinking that if they went to the room for a threesome I was going to be so conflicted!! On the one hand, it would be completely out of character for the show and seem like an absolutely cheap grab for ratings. On the other hand, h-o-t. Lol.

Lauren Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

I agree wholeheartedly. This show is "back in the saddle."

Great ensemble character development, beautiful cinematography, top-notch writing, and some of the BEST acting I've ever seen. Ever. They should win the SAG Award for Best Ensemble.

Lyla's last line "I gotta go pray" just killed me. In a good way.

Coach and Tami--agreed, most realistic married couple on television. They practically spark when they're together onscreen.

Matt is really coming into his own.

Landry rocked on and off the field.

Even the whole murder plotline is being done in a very interesting way.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this show.

And the best part: this week we got to hear my favorite line--

Clear eyes, full hearts, CAN'T LOSE!

sgirl Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

This episode proves FNL is the best drama on TV right now.

Cmary Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I have been a fan since day one...I get more excited about this show then Grey's. I just pray it stays on air :)

Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 06:03 PM EST

Coach did ask where Riggins was. "Where is our fullback"

Drew Daniels Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Not just the best episode of the season. This is the best episode of the series. Every line was perfect. The writing, acting and directing of this show is on a level of it's own. I think this might be the best one hour drama ever.

Allan Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

That's right, El Tee. If Street could get it on with Riggins, he'd be back in the saddle for sure.

james Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

This show is supposed to be authentic and real, yet every football game they win is at the last second with some heroic play. The football on this show is so unrealistic it is coming close to ridiculous. Go back to Smash. This show is focusing way too much on Landry and Tyra and great murder she wrote arc. Also Isn't riggins on the team still?

CB Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

Yeah that's was the show I fell in love with. Had some tears in my eyes when people were cheering Landry's name, and some more when Tyra dumped him so cruelly. Thank goodness for Matt finally putting Julie in her place.

Joe C Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 02:19 PM EST

Ken, you and I have been on the same page on all four episodes. This by far was the best episode of FNL this year. The humor that was sorely missing last week was back! My fave exchange was Coach Taylor and his assistant discussing how to 'get back in the saddle.' When Coach said 'I don't ever want to hear about you getting back in the saddle, lol!' Great show!

Owen Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

Awful episode. I love this show more'n my luggage, but this was the WORST episode in a pretty bad season. I rolled my eyes every other scene. I was actually excited by the fact that they lost, that Landry had had a triumph but realistically it turned around. But then--guess what? They won!! Let alone the fact that LANDRY IS ON THE TEAM????!!!!! This is NOT the same sweet Matt from last season (liked his last scene with Julie though). Booze Cruise in Mexico????? The cliche of Tyra being so mean to Landry to "break up with him for his own good" Didn't we go through the same "keep Tyra away from my child" thing with Julie last year? And the Coach/Tammy cutsiness is getting wearing. And, again, why is LANDRY ON THE TEAM?????

kana Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

GREAT episode. See what happens when they put football in a show about a football team? CRAZY!

JAL Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

I agree. Best episode of the season. It was all great except for "Lance's" total ripoff of Lost line during his halftime speech. Win together or lose alone instead of Live together, die alone. Who knows? Maybe Landry is just a big Lost fan.

Beth Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Love, Love, Love this show. Coach and Tami, most realistic married couple on tv. Loved Matt giving Julie the what-for speech. Can't wait til next week.

carra Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

Yes, best episode so far this season. Who was matt kissing in the previews for the next episode? I hope it's not the nurse, but that seems to be why here characters is even there. I hope eventually trust is gained back and we go back to matt and julie!!!!

carra Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

El Tee Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Loved last night! Did anyone else get an "Y Tu Mama Tambien" feeling during the last scene in Mexico with Lyla kissing both of the guys and then leaving them to maybe continue the love? That would have been hot guy-on-guy action.

sean Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

BEST FNL episode ever. I love the Tyra/Landry plot, it gives the beauty and the geek theme an authentic feel. Also love Landry's dad (Welcome back Aaron from 24)!!!!! Jason/Lyla/Riggins storyline was very powerful, regarding accepting one's disability (Lyla & Riggins are made for each other). FNL's needs to give Smash another storyline, instead of the sterotypical alph-black male (it's getting old)--bring back the bi-polar girlfriend. I loved Matt telling Julie off, and Coach/Tami-great chemistry.

Kimi Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

I agree, definitely the best episode of the season. Loved the Taylors, loved Matt telling Julie off, loved Mack telling coach how he got "back in the saddle."

Suzi Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

Ditto - great episode - great show - hope it stays on for a very long time - but am afraid, based on the previews of next week, it is going to turn out badly for Landry. I love FNL!!!

Kerith Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

I was so excited about last night. I was so glad that Matt told Julie off and Coach Taylor, I was also really impressed with Tami and Coach. That last scene was hilarious.

Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

Matt is going to get together with his grandma's nurse.

lynchpin Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

This show is wonderfully addictive! I love where the writers have gone with tyra/landry; Landry gets a football "victory." Now, if they can stay out of jail, they can work their way back together on equal-ish footing. Can't wait for lyla/jason/tim to be back in TX and see what comes next for each. Love this show!

Leigh Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

This show is the best thing on television right now!!! I just don't understand why more people do not want to watch it. My only complaint is that I wish there was more football in it. I agree that last night was definitely the best episode this season.

dbldn11 Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

It's been one of, if not the best show, on TV since its been on. I love Matty showing some stones and proving to Julie he is hurt, I love Landry proving that even when things should be great and arent, you still have your boys. And I'm excited about having Street back on the sideline and Riggins back on the field. What a great show, wow. There isnt a better hour on TV.

Michael Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

Welcome back, FNL. The Tyra/Landry subplot was a terrible mistake, and I think the writers know this and are trying to deal with it as best they can. If Tyra told Landry the real reason they're breaking up, Landry would have to confront his father, which could cause some real problems. But Landry is smart enough to know that Tyra is out of his league, which allows him to believe the reason he was given.

Mike Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

The LANCE/LANDRY thing goes back to last season with Coach Taylor never knowing his name. It was supposed to be funny...and it really was. I wouldn't be too picky about it being TEXAS and that it would never happen! lol

Emily Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:28 AM EST

Definitely the best episode so far. I just love Coach and Tami. As for Tyra and Landry, I think Tyra was trying to make him not protect her anymore. She was trying to piss him off enough that he wouldn't take any more responsibility for the dead guy than he has to. Still a lame plot development, but somewhat more understandable in this storyline than in most. I have to admit I'm a late comer to this show, but I LOVE it now. I hope it stays on for a long time - although high school shows are tricky like that.

Green Gummi Bear Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

My biggest quibble...this is Texas, land of the Dallas cowboys, you think football coaches couldn't remember the name "Landry"?

Melissa Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:22 AM EST

I couldn't even look at the tv when Tyra was breaking up with Landry. And I love that Matt stood up to Julie. Definitely the best episode of the year so far.

amy Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

Yeah..last night's epi was extremely good.I got a huge amount of satisfaction watching Coach Taylor squirm with his players and with Tami. The Landry/Tira/dead guy storyline I think has run it course. Put someone in jail already!!!!

Hey Mr. Tucker, Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

Coach did acknowledge Riggins' absence when he described to Tami the fact that Matt and Smash are fistfighting on the field, and that Riggins was missing. It looks like Riggins' disappearance and return might get touched on in next week's episode - we saw Coach kicking the lovely Tim off the field for some reason. I'm with you; this was the best (and most FNL-esque) episode so far this season. Welcome back to the show we love!

Richard Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:07 AM EST

I agree this was the best episode of the season so far. I think if Tyra told Landry the real reason for breaking up--he would have gone balistic. This might have been an ironic attempt to protect him. Very sad plot development.

Scott W Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 09:03 AM EST

no it was not cannibis. I do not know what the sone was. At the very end of Back in the saddle episode a song was playing in the background? anyone know?

Scott W Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

what was the song at the end of "back in the saddle' episode. Was it I honor you by Cannibis?
