Why you should stick with 'Heroes'

Oct 15, 2007, 06:03 PM | by Joy Piedmont

Categories: 'Heroes'

Heroes_l For the past three weeks, I've been having a serious internal debate: will I, or won't I continue to watch Heroes on Monday nights? The cons started to pile up as each week passed — lovesick Hiro again?, that awful promo two weeks ago featuring "the box," boredom with the Dominican twins, frustration with Claire's flyboy, West, and their budding romance — but I've decided to stick with it and you should too. The show has offered up some tantalizing incentives to keep tuning in each week. The murder of Kaito Nakamura, Isaac's painting of a Godfather-style executed Noah (the daddy formerly known as HRG), Kensei's healing power, and my favorite tidbit: Angela Petrelli's chilling/silent command for Parkman to get out of her head during her interrogation. Aside from these delicious plot points, I'm hopelessly devoted to my favorite Heroes: Nathan (Adrian Pasdar, pictured), whose storyline will hopefully expand soon, and Claire, whose search for identity as an adpotee and hero is irresistible.

So, folks, that's why I'm leaving my Monday nights open, at least until the end of "Volume 2: Generations." Yes, it's been a little slow and disjointed, and yes, some of our beloved characters are in painfully dull situations, but c'mon people! Who doesn't love a good old-fashioned murder-mystery, especially one that promises to reveal more dirt on the older generation of heroes and the sinister Company?

What are your likes and gripes with Volume 2 so far? Will you stand by your show or jump ship? Who are you favorite Heroes? Defend your ideas below, and if you've a yen for more Heroes, help build our wiki, EW's Ultimate Heroes Fan Guide. Plus, remember to check out Missy Schwartz's Heroes TV Watch Tuesday morning for a full recap and commentary on tonight's episode.

TVSlave Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 09:05 AM EST

I just watched the show from 15th - and damned but the writers are getting lazy. I lived in Louisiana for 37 years and they DO NOT HAVE COUNTIES.....where is the fact checker! ARRRRRGGGGG....I am ready to give up on the talky mess.

dsquaredfrmasquared Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

I'm still waiting for one of this season's stories to really grab me, but I'm intrigued enough by Nathan's mirror visage (so glad the beard is gone!) and surprisingly the Wonder Twins that I'll keep watching. I'm also wondering if there are connections between the people with duplicate powers -- Nathan and Claire's new boyfriend, Takeo Kensei and Claire. I'm interested in whether Micah's cousin's power only kicks in with stuff she watches on television or if other visuals trigger it. Plus Mohinder's always reliable as eye candy.

Chels Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

I'm just tired of the "we have too many new characters to show storylines about old characters people care about". Let sylar kill the wonder twins, bring peter back to new york, give niki some screen time, and start MAKING THE CHARACTERS INTERACT! I feel like they're rehashing season 1, where they all have different arcs.

Darth Nihilus Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 04:10 PM EST

Heroes is a blatant X-Men rip-off. Why is Marvel not suing NBC silly?

Sigh, you sheep just love your regurgitated concepts that exemplify the creative bankruptcy of Hollywood...

Jonathan Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

WRITING...

The real problem is that the writing has become cheezy soap-opera drama stuff. I don't follow the insider scoop close enough to know how or why or what changed, but the dialog now is like it comes out of a canned spam facility. Whatever energy there was in the season 1 writing room seems to have been replaced by something else - something that does not get what hereos is all about, but rather sees it asa job to fill in some ad-driven long term plotline managed by execs.

I'm a huge supported of the show, but the first few episodes have been so bad I'm searching for reasons to stay.

Nick Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Why watch? KRISTEN BELL of course....no other reason. Once her arc ends, i might stop watching. we'll see

Len Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

The pace had better pick up before the good games are on Monday Nite Football

Liz To Jen Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

I think that Claire's calling Nathan at a time when she felt she couldn't talk to her adopted parents qualifies as her still working out her issues with being adopted. Maybe it wasn't explicitly stated but it was in there

Jen Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

Claire's search for identity as an adoptee? Give me a break! She found her birth mother, found out her birth mother was screwing her over, found her birth parents, and that's about it. Once that issue was "resolved" (yes, your birth mother and father have parents, so does your birth family), they haven't delved into the issues facing adopted kids any more. Just more whining Claire, facing issues that any normal teenager does.

Keri Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

Shamrock and August: Think about what Sylar could do if he had Claire's power. He wouldn't be stoppable. So yeah, maybe NYC isn't the WORLD, but if Sylar had the ability to self-heal, he definitely would have taken over the world.

Save the cheerleader, save the world. Get it now?

Icy Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

Shamrock, you need the bigger picture of "save the cheerleader, save the world." Hiro thought Sylar was the bomb, and stabbing him in the gut proved futile. Hiro's opinion then, was that if Sylar didn't get Claire's power, he could have killed Sylar proper.

Also there's something to be said for Nathan's line "You saved the cheerleader, so we could save the world." I think Nathan finally meeting Claire softened him up enough to make the sacrifice (for her) that he thought he was making.

tom Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 07:41 AM EST

There are two reasons why I quit Heroes.

One: Nothing really exciting ever happens, and exciting things will only rarely happen because capital "S" Superheroics cost an arm and a leg, and television budgets do not satisfy that need adequately. Who cares about seeing someone vanish and reappear in another location, or watching yet another Alias-lite character cartwheel around in high-heeled boots and kick a stock television actor "near" his head? That ain't "super" where I come from.

Two: I haven't read any comic books in several years, but I still have yet to see anything on Heroes that doesn't have a direct precedent in the comic books I remember from the eighties and nineties. There is just nothing new going on on this show.

Additionally, although it swept the nation at the time, the catchphrase "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" was just too indefensibly stupid to make me feel anything but embarassed for the creative team and the viewers.

Orleans Parish Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 02:27 AM EST

I've considered stopping watching because I'm tired of rolling my eyes every time they mention New Orleans. I've lived in N.O. my whole life and I'm sick hearing about Katrina in TV dramas, I get enough of it from the news and outside my door. Also, if you're going to play the Katrina sympathy card, why not get the facts straight? Monica says she "wants to get out of this county." Last time i checked we had Parishes in Louisiana not Counties.

Shamrock Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 01:30 AM EST

I agree with August. Last seasons finale turned me off...what a disappointment. I have been saying all along on how did saving Claire save the world? Ok, we get it, having powers, poor me...boo hoo...boring. Let's create characters that want them and use them consitently without all the inner turmoil.

Kent Aron Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 12:20 AM EST

After this last week there's no way i can walk away. I was thinking about just waiting till the season was over and netflixing the whole thing, but after finally seeing the twist on Sylar, i'm glued.

I love that Sylar has no powers, in fact it's the best bit of writing so far. He still hates everyone who tried to kill him, desperately seeks power, and longs to kill Peter. But now he's just a guy. That's incredible writing.

I like that Peter is in Ireland. I think that he's still Sylars polar opposite, remember nothing, but having all his powers. It's a great ying/yang thing.

I hope it shapes up to be better and that we get rid of those twins. I don't like them, they bug me. I don't know why, maybe it's because I've already invested so much time in other characters.

I do like that new chick in New Orleans that does what she sees on TV. Lets how she watches robocop and guns pop out of her thighs... that'd be AWESOME

Love me some Heroes! Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

Adrian Pasdar's beard on "Heroes" = Keri Russell's hair on "Felicity"...much ado about nothing!

C'mon, people! So it's not "Gone With The Wind"...it's a TV show! Get over yourselves! If you want setup-execution-wrapup every week, watch "Law and Order" or "CSI". It isn't called "serialized" drama because they eat Frosted Flakes during filming...relax and enjoy.

And to those of you who are bored, well, you'll be glad to know "American Idol" starts soon...gotta love a nationally-televised karaoke contest...

Mike Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 08:25 PM EST

Was so bored by end of last season, I told myself I would not come back for season 2. But my inner superhero geek gets the better of me and I keep watching. For the most part, I find the writing to be terrible and action scenes to be consistently disappointing. (Looking forward to Kristen Bell, though!)

hoggle75 Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 08:06 PM EST

Joy, is there any way you could take over the TV Watch for Heroes for Missy instead of Marc Bernadin? He doesn't know the show and he was completely negative about the whole thing...whereas you at least give a viewer hope. Please? Oh, pretty please?

bootsycolumbia Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

My favorite character is and always will be Ando. I just love James Kyson Lee's dry line deliveries. Too bad he's barely on the show this season. I'm willing to hang in there for the duration of the show. Yes, the season has started out disjointed, but I'm still invested in a lot of the characters and I have faith that the writers have some good developments up their sleeves. Best moment: Angela Petrelli silently screaming "Get out of my head!" to Matt. That made me jump!

Ames Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

I like the show and esp. liked last night's episode. However, the biggest problem with heroes is that essentially, there are no actual "heroes." No one is unabashedly using their powers for good. They use their powers when convenient and otherwise try to hide them. That is what slows down the pace of the show so much.

August Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

I have always felt that Heroes is barely interesting enough to keep me watching. Throughout the "breakout" first season I was only interested in half the stuff that was going on, HRG character Hiro and Ando and the creepy killer who was eating brains. Then the creepy killer turned out to be a lame person name Sylar who is the very reason why less is more. They broke up the pair of Hiro and Ando and now it appears they are killing off HRG. What is left is the terrible Petrelli clan, annoying Claire who is angry for no reason, new characters who suck and a new creepy killer who will eventually suck. Parkman/Jessica/etc.. are so useless they don't need to be mentioned.

Nothing happen in the first season. The save the cheerleader story went nowhere, by the way New York is hardly saving the world. The Sylar Peter showdown was a joke, by the way Claire had nothing to do with saving the city.

Mostly irrating occasionally interesting and widely overrated.

Elizabeth Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

Next week watch Journeyman after Heroes and see how much complaining you do. Now that is one boring and terrible show.

Maeve Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

Watching West and Claire together, is anyone else reminded of The Boy Who Could Fly?

Johnny Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

The show barely into its second season has already jumped the shark. Too bad, it was a promising series at one time.

aerwin Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

Adrian Pasdar and Jack Coleman are the reasons I'm sticking with this show.

Joe Cool Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

I'll stick with it for a while longer. As I remember, the first few episodes last season were pretty slow. there have been enough interesting developments like:
Ma Patrelli getting in Matt's head;
Matt's dad being in that picture;
that picture itself;
a history 'tween West and HRG;
what the heck is up with Sylar; and
HRG and the Haitian back together
to name a few, that keep me interested.

I could do without the Wonder Twins. I also could do without Hiro: I never really figured out his purpose.

I do think, though, that Peter needs to get back to NYC. I'm just jonesing for him to go all SUPERMAN.

So, I'm in for the forseeable future.

Vicki Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

The twins are Dominican. It says so on the NBC website.

TJ Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:39 AM EST

I don't know, man, I like the show. It's still more interesting than anything else that's physically on tv now. We can gripe all we want about the events thus far, but as long as I'm still entertained, I'm in. I can't speak for the rest of you, but I'm willing to give the show more than 4 episodes to right the ship when I would watch nothing else on Monday.

Fatima Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

Oh and Dan - A major theme of this show has been different people from this globe connecting through a special bond. You are obviously missing it.

Curse them for introducing a black character last night?

Fatima Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

Aren't they from Honduras? I've seen so many internet authors just make up Spanish speaking countries that they claim they are from at their whim. Next week will we be calling them the Columbians?

jen, tx Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

i think my biggest problem with heroes this season isn't necessarily that it's been boring and slow so far (which it has been) but that i'm worried that this extreme boredom won't pay off. season one was pretty good (in all its inconsistencies) but it was leading up to a finale that was supposed to blow our minds and it failed miserably. i know a lot of people felt ripped off by the s1 finale. so i can't help but wonder if we're being set up for disappointment yet again, with the precedence that's already been set.

at least when lost was "bad" (which, in my opinion, even the slow parts were quite enjoyable, anna lucia aside), it has always built to something absolutely incredible and then delivered. the new heroes writers should definitely take note.

Rob Grizzly Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

Dan- I guess only white people can be heroes?

aymzer Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

I was completely disturbed when Matt made that little girl search for his father. He always seemed so compassionate before. The writing on this show is crazy...I hope KB can bring something interesting to this show or I am out!

Tipper Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Joy, you read my mind. I'm still having fun grabbing at the puzzle pieces, and I'll watch Adrian Pasdar til the cows come home. I do sort of wish they'd stick with the murder mystery story line more (as it's really quite delicious) and bring Peter home, but, so long as Nathan gets to emote, I'm good.

Valerie Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

Still love the show, even if I feel like we are just waiting for the real action. A three episode set-up is a little too long, especially for a returning show !

Hi Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

I just finished watching Season One on DVD. I gave up on the show soon after. How a show about "heroes" can have so much talking and so little doing is beyond me. It's a basic rule of storytelling, show me don't tell me. The characters give so many grand speeches about the importance of this or that but they do very little. I'm glad I'll never have to hear another Mohinder speech ever again.

drella66 Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

oh, and if i read another word about Nathan's beard i'll scream...that is sad that his totally fake beard (and stupid comparisons to jack's on LOST) is all the buzz that is being written about on this show!?!?!

Dan Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

everything is just so predictable on Heroes now. what happened to the sense of suspense and mystery? there is none of that now. Did they fire the original writing staff or something? How could the writing and plot lines go from the brilliance of the first season to the disjointed, boring, cliche scenes in the second season? Oh, and was the show sued for not being diverse or something? Do they really have to have a hero from EVERY racial and ethnic background? there are too many heroes and shallow plot lines this season. it's just so frustrating.

drella66 Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

I hate Peter, bad actor, bad hair and whiney. I also dont like the whole plotline with the little girl who is like a human GPS.

Too hard to pick a favorite, but I would have to say Hiro.

Better question: which of those powers would you most want to have if you could choose? It is really impossible to pick just one.

Joel Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 09:35 AM EST

I'm sticking with Heroes for now, but it's on thin ice. I'm unbelievably happy that NBC didn't renew its deal with iTunes. I purchased the season pass last year, and now they saved me some money. That would have been flushed down the toilet this year.

Julie Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 09:02 AM EST

I started watching this season to see what all the hoopla was about. 3 episodes in, I gave up. This show makes me sleepy with boredom.

Amber Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 08:43 AM EST

My gripes with this season are the same things happening over and over again each week. The twins running and getting caught is getting old. And her crying black stuff is not that cool.
My favorite heroes are: Peter, Hiro (although his storyline this season has been soooo boring) and Claire. I also think Sylar is the most interesting part of the show. My least favorites are Parkman and Nikki/Jessica.

shonuff Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 08:37 AM EST

i'll be hanging on long enough to see how kristen bell does. if they screw up her character, which would be hard to do given her talents, then all is basically lost. though the new "hero" they added last night seems interesting...

SG Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 08:31 AM EST

I gave up on Heroes 2 epi's back due to intense boredom. I gave it a second chance this season even though towards the end of season one I was cringing at the horrible writing. Some of the casting choices have been horrendous, and when I find myself laughing when I know I shouldn't, it's time to let go. The premise of this show had great potential, but I swear they're making this crap up as they go along!

Michael Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 07:07 AM EST

I gave up on this last year when the cast became so huge I finally admitted that not only did I not know what was going on, I didn't care. I don't miss it a bit.

Sheindie Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 01:32 AM EST

Man O Man!! I give this ep. a 5/5..awesome!! it's 'vintage' Heroes..and SYLAR: he steals every scene. Keep on watching and it'll hook you!! YAY!!

DW Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 01:08 AM EST

I'm still watching only to see Kristen Bell come on and kick some butt. Every episode since the finale has been terrible, so I hope she can bring some life to the show before I die of boredom.

Mozz Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 12:53 AM EST

My friends thinks I'm weird because I stopped watching the season finale, because I was soooo dissapointed at that episode after all the excellent build up. I have not watched the last 19 minutes of the season finale, was too bored by it... so no, i am not watching this season...

Nalkirts Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 12:41 AM EST

I hear a lot of talk about Kristen Bell coming on next week. Do you really think adding yet another hero to the line-up is what this show needs? Three of the four newbies are irritating, and most of the heroes from last season are replaying their plotlines. Oh, no, Claire and her father are lying to each other.

Rose Tyler Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 12:32 AM EST

It's way too early to give up. I'll admit that I haven't been "wowed" by these first few episodes and so far I don't love any of the new characters. However, I get the feeling that it's just a slow boil. There is still so much we don't know yet and I have have that those answers are going to be worth it. Besides JJ Philbin is now a writer/producer and she has yet to let me down.

Alex Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 12:19 AM EST

Joy, we're obviously watching TV shows. Way to be hyper critical.

Em Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:58 PM EST

I think it's pretty sad that the only thing I actually cried "HURRAH" for this week was the ad for Kristen Bell's 'Elle' next episode. Last week's episode was the worst TV I've seen and that includes an episode of Gossip Girl, and I am a Heroes fan.
The only things that actually did segue well from last season was Sylar's storyline, HRG going incognito, and Nathan's inability to reconcile what he did to change the future. Kring should end the Superman ouvre between Claire and West (gag!), the good guy going amnesiac bad with Peter (and relearning his powers) and the boring living conditions between Molly, Suresh and Parkman.
Generations definitely is the suckiest series of events. Hiro is only good with Ando, the twins need to be erradicated if their plot moves molasses slow and Claire needs to get over being angry with daddy.
Tim Kring, I hope you're reading. You need to get the action going or you're gonna lose at least 3 more viewers permanently.

donner Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:51 PM EST

I'm still watching...Great actors, great acting, interesting storylines (for the most part - Wonder Twins are BORING!)...
My faves:
HRG
Sylar
Hiro
Peter
Claire
Ned Ryerson (Bob)

Least faves -
Molly the annoying kid
Matt Parkman
Nathan (broody and moody)
Nikki/Jessica

Can't wait for Kristen Bell on next week's episode!!!!

randyfitzimmons Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:43 PM EST

I watched this show intermittently last year, and while some it was moderately interesting, I found the writing to be simplistic, and some of the dialogue laughable. I think the problem is that it is trying to appeal to too broad of an audience, so it shys away from being to 'dark' or 'complicated', two things that Lost consistently does, and it generally rewards it's viewers with some exciting moments. The Heroes finale was downright laughable...and for those wo make the argument that'it paid off last year'...um...HOW did it pay off? With a nonexistent resolution? All hype, no substance, I'm afraid.

Duane Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

Sigh. Nathan has a beard, OMG THEY STOLE THAT FROM LOST!!!! Like no one has ever had a beard before Jack.
The show's been a little slow, but I prefer this anyday over more stupid song and dance shows.

Isaac Painting #9 Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

That's pretty funny, Darma Boy. Here's my list of favorites:

1. The Invisible man- what a well-written character! An anti-hero, of sorts.

2. The Exploding man- I liked radioactive guy; he had a temper that matched his power.

3. Linderman- close call between him and Eric Roberts, but this guy was in A Clockwork Orange, so...

4. Nikki, the Jessica- Ali Larter is so hot! And for the first time, her acting is pretty good. Spilt personalities are fun to play.

5. Ando.

Seriously! No powers, but truly the definition of a best friend.

Darma Boy Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:26 PM EST

Least favorite characters:

1. Peter Petrelli- flips his hair constantly, does that weird lip thing when he talks. And too self-righteous.

2. Parkman the cop- something about this dude makes me want to punch him in the face. His fat, doughnut-loving face.

3. Micah... ugh. This kid actor has about as much range as a midget in a boxing match.

4. D.L.- Not that I don't like him, he's got a cool power...they totally didn't realize his full potential. Waste of talent.

5. That girl with "the power of influence" early in season one- as you can see, she wasn't even important enough for me to remember her name. She was annoying.

Darma boy Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 11:16 PM EST

Is it slow? Yes. But Heroes has always been slow. (If you look at last season, only 4 or 5 out of 22 episodes had any large action sequences.) I feel like I'm getting what I expected, right now: Mysteries piled on top of shady acting and the occasional corny dialogue. They need to find a way to spin this into X-Men: The TV Show, or someone needs to just make an XMen show. That will put all this nonsense to rest. But I will keep watching. I've been invested since Comicon last year, and I want to know what happens next.
Tonight's episode was actually pretty good, so I know it will get better as it goes along.
My favorite characters?
1. Claire- suicidal cheerleaders? We just dont get enough of that on tv these days. Shes the most complex and developed character.
2. Sylar- A hero is only as good as his villain.
3. Future Hiro- Only got to see him a couple of times, but he's wicked.
4. Noah "HRG" Bennett- best actor on the show.
5. Mohinder Seresh- worst actor on the show.

mage?! Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 10:57 PM EST

Sometimes I have found that waiting can be in vain when it comes to quality genre programing. Heroes is lacking and was lacking upon its inception. Comics and comic book heroes need to be larger than life or they lose that spark of interest.

Just a thought.

ivorydragon Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 10:54 PM EST

This season has been a bit slow, I'll admit, but it's still my favorite show and I'm sticking with it. I think all these storylines are gathering momentum (finally). I do hope that Hiro's story is going somewhere - he's my favorite character and he deserves better than another heart-breaking doomed romance.

TB Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 10:02 PM EST

Here's the thing I have really been trying to make myself watch Heroes the last couple of weeks and really since that awful finale I haven't really been that invested in it. However, I also wanted to give up on Lost when that ridiculous button was introduces. If I had I wouldn't have watched some of the most creative TV and been witnessed to the truly genius moment of the flash forward. Maybe its because we can't get straight answers out of most of the people in our TV's (our president, congress, ect.) that people want their TV shows without any mystery or build up or hell courting. Like Carrie asked on Sex & City "Are we sluts"? Do we need to have all or nothing so soon? Do the TV shows that we watch have to put out to keep us coming back? Heroes can thank Lost for teaching me a valuable lesson, sometimes waiting is better for the relationship in the end, even when its with a TV show.

t3hdow Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

The first few episodes weren't particularly exciting, though I wouldn't go counting it out so fast. Today's episode wasn't half bad and the preview for next week's looks exciting with Kristen Bell's appearance. As for the new characters, they're not as bad as some of you stated. The problem is that it's very hard to develop them with so many story threads to tell at once. Too many season 2 characters are converging with the older ones in such a slapdash way, it's hard to warm up to them very quickly. Coming from someone who stuck with Lost through its sluggish season 2 and the first half of season 3, I'll definitely stick with Heroes until the end of season 2. That's just the possible risk you pay for dedicating yourself to serialized dramas (something the CBS procedurals hardly have to worry about). They'll hit bumps and bad curves down the road, but it'll bounce back overtime.

Sure it's been a little slow building but I think the payoff will be worth the wait... besides it wouldn't be any fun if they gave us all the answers right away!

Why you shouldn't stick with "Heroes":
Tonight's episode.

The Katrina-related storylne is cringe-inducing, I can't think of a less appropriate show to place a Katrina storyline into (OK, I can think on one: Two and 1/2 Men). They can't do such a complicated and tragic situation justice by shoe-horning references to into a FANTASY show. FANTASY. It also anchors the "Heroes"verse firmly in 2007 (or thereabouts) and that works against the whole FANTASY thing too. Why not just throw in an Iraqi war plot point too? Awful. The whole thing thing is awful - the stunt casting of Uhura? Awful. The acting of the niece with the powers? Awful. I won't even mention the huge suspension of disbelief required to buy that Nicki would leave her son after what he's been through.

The Wonder Twins? Hate.
The fact that Matt's dad is the Big Bad? Yawn.

I'll watch til the mid season break but if things don't radically improve, I'm out after that. So far, it's been suck city this year.

Ian Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

How could you stop watching after that extremely exciting preview for next week's episode, starring KRISTEN BELL! She is going to be a kick ass hero!

FLGrl Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

Tonight totally convinced me to keep watching...storylines are filling out, coming together. Also, I'm in love with Sylar. I mean Gabriel.

Todd Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:25 PM EST

Snarky, that isn't Parkman's kid.

Becca Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:24 PM EST

PPL seriously....
Does no one have any patients anymore? Let the story build for goodness sake. You can't expect wham bam thank you mam every episode. I agree that the twins are kinda boring & I really want Hiro in the present time, but it's been 3 episodes..give them time to become cool. I couldn't stand Nathan early in the last season but I love him now...just relax let the characters develop, and besides this is heroes, if they really suck, you know sylar will just end up eating their brains :) I do like the story with molly it's getting more intersting and as for tonight's ep. Lookin forward to seeing more of the new girl in New Orleans. I will be watching all season

Michael Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:21 PM EST

I'm still a big fan but I'm tired of Hiro as the naive good guy. He needs to grow up. I liked the Hiro from the future in season 1. The one who could kick ass and had a dark side.

Mekko Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:41 PM EST

The coolest scene for me so far was Peter's mom psychically yelling at Matt. And mirror Nathan!

Mekko Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:34 PM EST

how did absolutely no one find the scrolls in Hiro's sword for 400 years? it makes no sense

MF Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:33 PM EST

Not to nitpick, but to the person who said the Hiro plot had nothing to do with anything else: keep in mind that part of what made Heroes S1 so much fun was the way that all these separate storylines slowly and steadily came together. Learning the connections between all the characters made the show so appealing to tune in to week after week. And as far as the Hiro plotline this season: The symbol over the pictures of the people who are being targeted? It's Takei Kenzei's. There's clearly a connection there. We just have to wait it out, and see.

snarky Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:32 PM EST

Ceballos - totally agree about Mr. Muggles - he rocks! AN ep w/o him is just sad. I DVR Hearos so that I can watch later and zip thru all the boring stuff I could care less about - i.e. the wonder twins. Don't we have enought characters without adding new ones? I am losing interest in Peter's brother, Parkman, Hiro and Nikki, just b/c they have been either non-existant, or their stories are so lame that they are unwatchable. (Parkman leaves his kid in CA with the ex wife to raise some other kid who he just met? WHA????) I still like Claire and Peter, but the there is not much plot there either. Am looking forward to K. Bell and the Origins series which are coming soon. I will watch Heroes this season, but will continue to disregard the characters/storylines I do not like.

Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:29 PM EST

Unfortunately I'm so done with Heroes- last episode was my last. It has become so dull and boring, with terrible acting and even worse CG (flying scene anyone?) I cant take it anymore. The Nikki/Paulo incest twins as I call them have the SAME plot every episode, run, almost get caught, she almost kills someone, he saves them, more running. And it always seems like they're about to make out!

Agh and West is the worst character on a television show I've seen in a long, long time. Add to that terrible, terrible Irish accents, and Hiro plot that has absolutely nothing to do with anything else and I'm out! Peace Heroes!

Nance Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:27 PM EST

I love all these characters, and I'm totally wrapped up in there trials. Maybe you should be watching online with the much shorter interruptions, as I have.

Brad Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 08:02 PM EST

I really don't know what people are talking about or maybe I'm weird.

But I'm enjoying this season just as much as last year. True it hasn't matched some of the greater Season 1 Heroes episode but I think they're still great.

And the twins aren't bothering me too bad. I'm pretty neutral about them.

ME Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

I'd hate to compare this show to Lost but I feel I have to. I only have room for one network science fiction show this tv season and based on what I've seen of Heroes last spring and now, Lost is it. Lost can be dull and uneven but when it's good (season 3 finale, anyone? The pilot?), it's really good. Acting, writing, directing - it can be fantastic on all levels. On Heroes, even when the writing is good, the acting can still be mediocre. Even Hiro cannot save this for me. I'm so done with Heroes - sorry.

kelley Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:50 PM EST

SO disappointed in the second season! The teenage romance is horrendous, so bad, it was hard to watch. Heroes was the ONLY show we watched with any anticipation, and now, we may be swayed to no longer watch it. Disappointing! LAME Peter P. story, LAMER Sylar plot. And get over the BoogeyMan already. What happened after Peter blew? How about finishing what you started???

jay Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:40 PM EST

the show is a bit dull now...i really wish they could find a nice balance of them using their powers and developing a storyline. the magic of the first half of the first season was learning about their powers with them. i'll still watch though, hopeuflly it will get better

Tom Strong Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

Heroes is done. Very very dull.

Kevin Smith Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

Heroes is lame and boring. Except for the one that I am going to direct. Otherwise, it's just a rip-off of Lost, X_Men, Watchmen, and 4400.

Ellipsian Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

Why should you stick with "Heroes"? Two words: Kristen Bell. Here's hoping that she's the mysterious, hoodie-d hero-slayer and can get this molasses-slow show MOVING already.

C C Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

I'm not a Heroes fan, but I know that Bryan Fuller, the creator of colorful newbie Pushing Daisies, was a producer and writer on Heroes last season. Someone on another board suggested that Fuller was "the glue" that held Heroes together last season, and it is suffering creatively in his absence.

mGoode Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:05 PM EST

I probably won't give up on it for a while. I have stuck it out longer on other shows that ended up going bad. I stuck with the X-Files until the begining of the last season, and it was just bad towards the end. It'll take more than a few slow eps to keep me away.

Jay Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:02 PM EST

Absolutely terrible.

mage?! Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

I gave up on Heroes when it ended so lamely last season. Put on some tights and capes and maybe we can talk.

J Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

ZZZZZZZzzzzzz

BrandonK Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

I'm a pretty loyal viewer, once I start watching something. Every year I tell myself I'm not going to watch American Idol, and I end up watching it. So yes, I'll keep watching Heroes. I really love superpowers! LOL

LostHero Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

Let's be honest, the Honduran Wonder twins are the Nikki and Paulo of Heroes. There new foreign, and we're already trying to be convinced that they have been connected to the other heroes all along. e.g. Claire's stolen car. With any luck we'll see all this excitement culminate midseason with a Honduran Wonder Twins centered episode, which results in their deaths.

TuMadre Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:27 PM EST

I don't care what the ADD people below say, I am watching this show on monday nights. I can't believe everyone wants this show to move as quickly as CSI or any other show, they don't quite get the concept of a mini-series that spans an entire season.. not each episode is a new open and close case solved.. what's this, the Superfriends??!?

This show rocks and it's moving just fine as far as I'm concerned.

Matthew Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

I definitley agree with Carli.
Out of all the sophomore shows coming back this season, I thought at least Heroes wouldn't dissapoint. But honestly it really has in so many ways possible. Is it bad that I take bathroom breaks whenever the Hiro love triangle storyline comes on? I'd say so.

Carli Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

The only reason I am still watching is so I won't be lost when Kristen Bell finally comes on.

Chelsea Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

Am I the only one completely charmed by Claire's friend West? I love him..he oozes charm. And okay, I'll admit it, I actually swooned when he said "Claire, shut up" and flew her into the air. I do wish the Peter storyline would pick up though..get him back where he belongs..with original characters!
