'Bee Movie TV Juniors': I mean WHAT is the DEAL with THESE?!

Oct 19, 2007, 05:10 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Advertising, Film, To Care or Not to Care

Bee_l I've kind of had it with Bee Movie's "TV Juniors" ad segments, hosted by Jerry Seinfeld at his fake desk (pictured), that keep running on NBC. (The "B" in "NBC" stands for "Jerry Seinfeld" now, by the way.) It's admirable that he and his minions have put out about 700 promos at this point, but isn't there a point where enough is enough? The campaign started out so strong, but I feel at this point I've been over-saturated with a suffocating nectar comprised of way-too-long improv bits and seemingly delicious animated honey. Most of the spots, which feature guest stars like Ray Liotta, Matthew Broderick, and DreamWorks honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg, seem better-suited for FunnyOrDie or YouTube than actual TV. So I wonder: Do the "TV Juniors" make you want to see Bee Movie more or less?

Oh, and can anyone say "Taking the bait"?

Me! I can!

Huh? Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

Larry David did not leave Seinfeld, there was no quality drop. Larry David wrote the last episode by himself. It was anti-climactic and not very funny.

But yes Seinfeld is pretty annoying.

Kurt Sat, Nov 10, 2007 at 05:35 PM EST

Jerky Seinfeld knows he never would become a zillionaire without the genius of Larry David, and it's EATING HIM UP inside. A decade passes since his little crapfest went off the air (several years after it kicked the shark's head while jumping it), and he's hawking a low-rent CGI stink bomb like it's high art. Anyone see his little tirade on Larry King? Total jerk.

Mel Fri, Nov 9, 2007 at 04:31 PM EST

Whereas I probably would have gone to see the movie before, the incessant commercials, the movie tie-ins, the McDonald's commercials, the HP ads, Seinfeld being on '30 Rock' has left tired of a movie I haven't even seen yet. Just please, make it all stop!

steve Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

Seinfeld sucks ass because he's a smarmy, overrated comic that doesn't care about anyone but himself. And what's the deal with those huge gums?

The box office results are in...Bee movie is losing a TON of money. Good.

Carl LaFong Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

I very much agree with the comments of a few of you - Seinfeld was marginally funny - it was Larry David that 'made' the show Seinfeld. Notice the big dropoff in quality after Larry left the show. This Bee Movie looks like complete garbage.

Frances Mon, Oct 29, 2007 at 10:32 PM EST

Sad sad sad. I worked at an animation studio and Jerry has totally missed the mark on what is fun and weird about it. He even got the Super Chicken theme song wrong. Bad research. It all proves the point that the "creatives" at the top become clueless.

Access your raw talent guys, you've become DULL!

Sorry, here it comes again. I am running for the mute button!

jerms Mon, Oct 29, 2007 at 08:47 PM EST

Jerry you are washed up and based on what is happening at NBC with this Bee Movie promo crap I think the network is too. Like an old sitcom that used to air on your network, Gimmie A Break! Nel Carter sung along time ago.

ex Seinfeld fan Mon, Oct 29, 2007 at 08:23 PM EST

HATE THEM. I used to think Seinfeld was funny. I was wrong. It was always Larry David's writing that made him look good. I am so so so sick of these things. No doubt they are not subject to ratings since I guess they're commercials. PLEASE NBC - dump these unfunny little things. We might be stupid tv addicts but no one is that stupid.

Mon, Oct 29, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

Please NBC, make these things stop! They're terrible. I leave the room when these things come on. And I am definitely not seeing this movie. I'm mean, how hard is it to make a reasonable trailer? Even crap movies make themselves look halfway decent.

CamG Mon, Oct 29, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

I hate all of them. The one with the scuba diving bee is particularly annoying because Seinfeld wants to appeal to 'foreigners' with a 'Latino' Bee. The idea is not at all offensive, but those words went out of use in the 70's. The whole thing just makes him seem out of touch, old, and desperate. Sad.

Texaju Fri, Oct 26, 2007 at 02:32 PM EST

I just want life to go back to the way it was, before Bee Movie TV Juniors ever existed. Seeing Jerry on 30 Rock a few weeks ago was great, and for that night, I suppose I could tolerate a "Junior" or two, but this has become a sick way of life.

stevens Fri, Oct 26, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

these things are so terrible, I now not only will not see his movie, I'm rooting for it to fail.

tyler Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 08:16 PM EST

nbc should have known better

Annie Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

I can truly admit that I am enjoying these "junior". And forgive the term "buzz" but it is what everyone is watching and talking about at work. Maybe it is mainly Seinfeld fans, which admittedly I am. But I find them refreshing and funny and kind of make me want to go to the movie, even though I don't have the excuse to take the kids, as I don't have any. I also am a person who still enjoys Seinfeld re-runs, his writing, humor, etc...so am still getting a kick about this brilliant approach mixing entertainment and marketing. Genius!

Concerned Citizen Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

TV Juniors is the best show on NBC right now. They should have a marathon of it, it's the highlight of my week.

Yo Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

the lamest part is they give you advanced notice that one is coming up (we call it a warning).... like they think we're going to go "oohh, can't wait for this. nope, I'm not going to the kitchen to grab a drink .. I gotta stay!". People here scream "CHANGE THE CHANNEL!! QUICK!".

Intelligent people (i guess) are spending big bucks creating and funding these. How is this possible?

Mackie Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 10:45 PM EST

Just saw another one of these atrocities during Biggest Loser. When did Seinfeld stop being funny? These tv junior things are just unbearable.

Scott Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 08:19 PM EST

I too can not stand these promos. I went to http://www.nbc.com/Footer/Contact_Us/ and chose to submit a question not found on the FAQ. From the drop down list choose other.
There you have a chance to tell NBC how you feel about these!
I just can't take anymore!! I have had to break out the Tivo!

Melissa Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

HATE! Thank you. It was bad enough when they nearly ruined the season premiere of my favorite TV show (thank God it found its stride again in the following weeks!) but argh! Enough already.

Jim Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:50 AM EST

Well, I'll join the minority and say I love these spots. Then again, I adore Jerry Seinfeld, so it would take a lot to put me off. I can understand how people could be annoyed by them, though, as opposed to how I just don't understand people who say they hate his sitcom.

Stef Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

... I am THIS CLOSE to not watching NBC...

Stef Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:39 AM EST

I am inclined to agree with quite a few of the previous posters. This is the movie I hate that I haven't seen. I am > to not watching NBC until after the movie is long dead.

Martha Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

These annoying promos are just the latest in a long line of reasons to love my DVR.

Becky Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

no way in hell am I watching this movie. these stupid tv juniors are so annoying and not even funny. it is a dissappointment doming from Seinfield. I don't have kids, but if I did I STILL wouldn't go see it. Since the first time I saw them, I have gotten irate every time they have interrupted my night. My husband sits on the couch with his jaw haning open like he is shocked. It is shocking!! For real, this was a HORRIBLE idea, really really horrible.

Topaz Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

I know, it's like, WE GET IT JERRY! YOU WANT US TO WATCH YOUR MOVIE! I bet he'll realize on opening day that he wasted more money promoting the movie than he did with the movie itself.

Frances Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 09:12 AM EST

I freakin HATE with every ounce of my being these stupid TV juniors. If wasn't planning on seeing this movie before, I will avoid it like the plague now! Besides, Jerry is not that funny!

Mariane Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 08:20 AM EST

It appears to be a desperate ploy to sell the movie, which they may be realizing too late is not that good.

alexa Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 07:25 AM EST

Honestly, I don't get the "TV Juniors" name. Meaning mini tv episodes, I guess. That just confuses me in itself.

Elizabeth Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 07:18 AM EST

It is too bad that they couldn't do a comparison: the box office numbers with and without these intrusions on my favorite shows. Maybe "Seinfeldvision" would've been a better choice...

harry k Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 09:54 PM EST

Thank you. Those things have been driving me crazy and every time i see one i want to see the movie ten times less. every dollar they're spending on those will probably bring in less at the box office.

Sam Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

The movie looks unoriginal, unfunny, and just generally lame. Those awful commercials dovetail perfectly as they are also painfully unfunny and lame. I honestly don't think I ever want to see Seinfeld again in any capacity. Enough.

Kelsey Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

What demographic is this film trying to appeal to-kids or their parents? Modern kids films normally try to slip in some "ask your mother" jokes but Dreamworks has gone overboard with adult humor in their animated movies. Now they are only advertising to the parents! It is these unfunny, tedious shorts (that should be online) and the negilence to their target audience that makes me hate this film.

Mike Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

Whether or not these ads are funny, they give me no sense whatsoever of the movie or whether I might want to see it. It seems like a strange way to market a cartoon, that's for sure, because kids aren't going to like/understand the ads at all.

Jessica Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 09:31 AM EST

I like him and I think the movie will be great. Many celebrities also think he is talented. I saw their forums at searchingmillionaire.com.
It's a dating site for celebrities and wealthy people.

TVSlave Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

michael has a point - the Movie I Hate That I Havent't Even Seen Yet. This promotion - wedged into some of my favorite shows has been a huge turnoff....thanks god for DVR and wizzing past these inane vanity pieces...Seinfeld was on the COVER OF PARADE MAGAZINE today!!!! He is so over for me....he is not relevant anymore.

togirl Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 04:13 AM EST

Not funny, the movie will be cool...

Thanks EW Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 02:00 AM EST

for noting this irritation. The ads not only will make NO difference to the film's bottom line, Jerry is coming off really whorish and several of the ads are actually offensive. So now you're possibly turning me OFF a good movie with bad taste ads... nice NBC, nice.

Ryan Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 07:31 PM EST

Well, I can't say I wanna see Bee Movie any more than before because I am so excited for it. Jerry Seinfeld is my god. But more often than not, I find these Juniors pretty funny. They're not Seinfeld, but nothing ever will be anyway. So if you like them, sit back and enjoy. If not, go get some food or fast forward if it's DVR'd.

Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

I thought some of them were kind of funny even though they probably have nothing to do with the movie. They're better than most commercials. If you don't like them that much why don't you just change the channel or something?

dan Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

I LOVE the ads i laughed hysterically at the one with matthew broderick. i think it is going to be an awesome movie and can't wait

hamster Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Remember how much NBC promoted "Evan Almighty" earlier this year? You couldn't turn on the channel without seeing some ad or Dateline promo for the film. Remember the reviews for that film? Who knows. "Bee" may be a great movie, but we're not seeing much of the actual movie--just a lot of so-called "behind the scenes" snippets with jokes which are only interesting to Hollywood insiders. Is that the audience they're trying to attract? Or maybe the film just isn't that good.

Paul Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 01:43 AM EST

Did NBC sell their soul or something to Jerry?! Enough is enough! He wasn't even that funny when he was on TV.

kelsey Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 12:10 AM EST

Thank you! Those promos annoy the heck out of me. Now, I have to admit I've never "gotten" Seinfeld's humor, so none of the previews for Bee Movie have impressed me. But talk about desperate! Why does Seinfeld/Dreamworks insist on shoving this movie down our throats? I just don't get the logic. It's like, get over yourselves.

C Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 11:36 PM EST

I personally don't watch NBC so didn't see the promos. However, I did see the short preview on a dish channel once and thought it might 'be' an entertaining movie.
Why all the media craze? $$$ rules the movie industry, not substance.

Snsetblaze Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

While I thought Jerry's guest spot on 30 Rock was very funny, I find the spots not just unfunny but unecessary. The movie's going to be a hit whether its good or not. The previews in the theaters were funny even though it is unlikely that the story is that original. Its Dreamworks and animation and the cast is mostly A list. Parents are always looking for movies they can take their kids to. A few commercials two weeks before it opens during early prime time and afternoon cartoon watching would have been enough.

Fatima Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

Not only are they unfunny, but I'm pretty sure a few of them have been mildly offensive. The catching immigrants at the border one? WTF?

Richard M. Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 10:08 PM EST

I don't feel the love to see this B-movie.

kats Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 09:20 PM EST

OMG! Time for a mercy killing of the bee commercials already. Thankfully I dvr most of the stuff during which they're shown so I just blow right through them rather than during them.

donner Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 09:19 PM EST

OH...MY...GOD!!! I am SO SICK of these B Movie Junior things - WTF??? Not funny...Not...at all...just bad...the movie might be cute, but I cannot watch those juniors at all...the ceiling fell in on him last night? what was THAT all about?? and was Matthew Broderick's issue w/ the script supposed to be funny? Cause I love me some MB, but it wasn't funny at all...damn, Gina...this sux!

echo Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 08:50 PM EST

I've honestly been waiting for PopWatch to get around to this Seinfeld blitz bee-cause I thought that it was just me really starting to cringe every time that Jerry made yet another appearance on someone's show in the past 2 weeks. Can anyone say insecure? This whole campaign has been painful to watch. The last straw for me was seeing him briefly on Leno last night......Jay had to help him hawk his last season of "Seinfeld" and also a boxed set of the entire series (all to be released right after this Bee movie). A week ago, on Oprah, his wife is like the new Rachael Ray with a cookbook. What's going on with the Seinfeld family? It can't be money. He obviously is testing the waters and seems rather desperate to see if audiences are interested in seeing more of him. He and NBC have let this get way out of hand. Never have I seen this level of promotion for a cartoon. Maybe B stands for box-office Bomb?

BrandonK Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 08:05 PM EST

Well, Annie, maybe you've seen more of these than I have, but I think they're hilarious! I'd rather watch a whole day of these than regular commercials.

Jane Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

These would have been great - had Larry David written them. If there's anything that these spots prove, its that Jerry Seinfeld himself is not funny.

Jelana Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 07:02 PM EST

Aaaah. I didn't even know they were terrible. I only knew there were a lot of them as I zipped forward through them. Yet another reason why the DVR is the GREATEST INVENTION EVER!

mike Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 06:29 PM EST

It would have been fine if they had limited them to the night Jerry was on 30 Rock. Now they are pretty awful. I won't see the movie. Like everyone else has said, Antz and A Bugs Life, been there seen them both.

ronaldo Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 06:04 PM EST

I agree with Aaron. It's not just that they're bad; they're painful.

Mavis Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Those Bee shorts want me to see the movie less and less. It's like when ABC was promoting Daybreak insesantly during the first "6-pack" of Lost episodes last year. It made me and many Lost fans not watch the show. And look what happened to that thing!

stephen Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

Slezak should do a post about "The Movie I Hate That I Haven't Seen" like the similar one of 'Psyche' he did a few weeks ago

Ceballos Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

I actually wanted to check it out UNTIL they started running these stupid "Juniors" things. Nice job making me not want to see something I was already going to see, Seinfeld.

Kirby Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

I didn't need to see 10 hours of crapppy ads--I could have guessed this would be a totally crappy movie just from hearing the plot.
Why do people watch ads anyway? It's called the mute button. Or, change channels.

Andy Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:27 PM EST

I'm not a fan of the spots, either. They take up valuble commercial time! Seriously, though, they are getting irritating, but I still want to see the movie; that hasn't been dampered by these.

And isn't this pretty much what Jerry and Jack agreed to on the 30 Rock premiere? Unlimited Bee Movie promotions on NBC? It was something like that, right?

Aaron Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Those spots really sting.

Seriously though, they're painfully unfunny and the "painfully" is exaggerated b/c it's Jerry and he's usually not soooo far off base. I have to leave the room when these come on b/c they're so bad it makes me uncomfortable.

Jay Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Not only do I dislike these spots, but I also have zero interest in the movie. Enough is enough.

LuLu Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:18 PM EST

I hate these spots. HATE them. NBC, needs to drop them.

Bobby Rowe Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

A Bugs Life and Antz were closer to 10 years ago. I point this out not to be a jerk but to say HOLY COW I"M OLD.

Stephen Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

For this much promotion, the film better be flawless.

Jill Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 05:07 PM EST

I either mute the TV or flick to another channel when I see this come on.

denise Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

i have a 7 year old and even SHE doesn't want to see it. the nbc promos are HORRIBLE and, for the most part, unfunny.

Janie Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

I am so sick of this "Bee Movie" promotion AND his wife's dumb cookbook. Can we say oversaturated?

"A Bug's Life" and "Antz" did this five years ago. Done.

Janie Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

bj Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 04:31 PM EST

tv juniors?? whats that? OHHHH TIVO and the skip buton got to love that

Bee-Geez Fri, Oct 19, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

The film sounds cute, but there is a thing called over-promotion. This film defines it.
