What are the scariest songs ever?

Elvis_l With Halloween upon us, it's time to ask: What is the scariest song ever? I don't mean jokey monster music like "Werewolves of London" or "Thriller," or sorta ominous but safely abstract metaphorical fare like "Season of the Witch" or "Sympathy for the Devil." No, I mean songs that actually scare you, like a good horror movie does. Top on my list is by Elvis Costello (pictured), of all people. His 1986 mini-epic "I Want You" is a terrifying depiction of an obsessive masochist confronting his cheating lover. As it builds to a climax, you don't know if he's going to kill her, kill himself, or both. At the end, the singer sounds spent, as if his will to live, or his very lifeblood, is spilling out. SInds shivers up my spine every time I hear it. (Fiona Apple has a faithful, thoroughly chilling live cover version, with Elvis backing her on guitar, that you can watch on YouTube.)

Other truly scary songs: Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," Genesis' "Mama" (no, really!), Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," Britney Spears' "... Baby One More Time" (I swear, I can hear her soul choking and dying), and of course, Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain." Which songs frighten you, PopWatchers?

If I had A Heart by Fever Ray.. Is a very scary song..

Also, Stan by Eminem is a depressing song

Kina Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 02:40 PM EST

"(Not Adam)" by Foetus is definitely one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard. It's from the point of view of a murderer talking to his dead lover. Makes me shudder every time I hear it!
Also very spooky songs:
"Paralyzed" by the Cardigans
"Broadway and Hurst" by the Outline
"Calm & Collapsed" by the Exies

Luka Tue, Jun 30, 2009 at 12:39 PM EST

I would also like to mention ''See how pretty, see how smart'' by The Melvins. The Song is 10 minutes long and it's almost torturous.

"Horses" by Patti Smith

As a side note as a frosh, I once called the campus radio station an (not intending a joke) requested a "Timothy / Gravedigger" doubleheader...silence fom the other end, then,"You are SICK!"

+Ross+ Fri, Mar 20, 2009 at 09:23 AM EST

"Milkman" by Aphex Twin is really disturbing.

In fact, a lot of Aphex Twin's music is like an audio embodiment of various psychoses.

Steve Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Victim, by Golden Palominos, off the Dead Inside album. Its more spoken word then song, but its 110% disturbing.

Twisted Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

No pop songs freak me out. I have quite a collection of creepy songs being a ravenous horror fan. I do love Nick Cave's "Loverman" and Red Right Hand". For true atmospheric terror, check out Zoat Aon's album The Triplex Bestial, Current 93's "Dog's Blood Rising" and Sunn 0))) "Sin Nanna". It's a whole different level of scary.

jezmebaby Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

This Big Hush by Shriekback

Crispy Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 02:47 AM EST

OMG, after reading the comments, I listened to '97 Bonnie and Clyde, the Tori Amos version, and that is without a doubt the scariest thing I've ever heard: like fingernails up and down the blackboard of my spine.

Victoria Violence Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:38 AM EST

He has a sexy voice. I thnk this song is sexy.

tee Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

Anything by klaus nomi.

josh Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

revolution 9 is creepy. So is Lights in the Sky by nine inch nails. One of These days by pink floyd used to freak me out when i was little. The whole album Smells Like Children By Marilyn Manson is scary. Especially the covers Sweet Dreams and I put a Spell on you. They took the songs and put whole new meaning on them. Oh and Beethoven's moonlight sonata is kind of creepy too

frank Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

Again and Again by Bird and Bee- this song FREAKS me out!!

Bilgeman Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Listen to the vocal on Beefheart's 'Bat Chain Puller', especially towards the end of the song. Darth Vader doesn't come close. The music helps though

That "You sping me right round, baby" song by Dead or Alive. When the frontman strecthes his mouth wide open says "I need your looooo-o-o-o-o-o-ve" it creeps me out.

mount Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

Tori Amos's "97 Bonnie And Clyde", a truly scary scary piece of work. I always think twice before playing it.

Michael Sun, Nov 11, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

The CREEPIEST song I have EVER heard is "Years Ago" by Alice Cooper. It creeps me out every time I hear it.

Megan Sun, Nov 4, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

Insect Eyes by Devendra Banhart. I can't even listen to that song. Also Goodbye Horses and Run by Air.

Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

Seconding Waking the Witch-Kate Bush, Don't Fear the Reaper, and night on Bald Mountain.
Also Goodbye Horses-Q Lazzarus probably because of the Buffalo Bill dance...but it still sounds spooky without the imagery.

Rasputin Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

I think the creepiest song is probably Ministry - Psalm 69. Actually you could make the case for most of the songs on this album. One of my favorites.

boredatwork Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:19 PM EST

"Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac. Their voices just sound spooky to me in that song. Also that one song by Enigma with the monks chanting or whatever.

kel Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

Oops. Sorry about the double post!

kel Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

"Possession" by Sarah McLachlan. It's a beautiful song but creepy when you know the back story. It was inspired by an actual stalker, who committed suicide because of the song.

Also eerie: Sh**, Damn, Motherf***er by D'Angelo about a guy who catches his woman cheating and his bloody reaction to it.

kel Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

Tori Amos "Spark". Totally creeps me out but I love it.

Rob Grizzly Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

Eminem's "Kim."

Nine Inch Nails' "Closer."

Korn's "Daddy."

Anything from Marilyn Manson or Insane Clown Posse

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 09:05 PM EST

Murder By Numbers - The Police. The creepiest How-to ever made.
Goodnight Moon from the Kill Bill Soundtrack...brrrr

Jessica Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:15 PM EST

I vote for Tear you Apart by She Wants Revenge. The beat is relentless and the accompanying video is dark and creepy. It sends shivers up my spine (in a good way).

Jelana Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

For those of you who said Don't Fear the Reaper -- there's a reason it was omitted: COWBELL!!!! Can you really listen to that without picturing Christopher Walken insisting on more cowbell? I can't listen to that song without cracking up.

Shandy Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

I'm glad other people mentioned "Stan" by Eminem (and Dido). For some reason, it really creeps me out.

DalGal Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 04:41 PM EST

Not so much her songs but anything by Celine Dion sends me screaming from the room. Could be her "I am the Greatest Singer in the World" diva attitude and actually seeing her try to sing a AC/DC song on VH1 Diva's program. Try and get that image out of your head!

Loralie Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

I'm surprised no one mentioned "Enter Sandman" by Metallica.... also "Hotel California" by the Eagles always freaked me out...

kdl;d Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

When i was a kid i was scared by the song Bette Davis Eye's. I think it was the music. One song i find creepy is Roxy Music's/ In every house a heartache.

Alan Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

I find "Troy" by Sinead O'Connor to be a scary song. I know it's not really meant to be, but there's just so much rage and anger. It builds up from a slow almost whispering start to an enraged and snarling finish. It gives me goosebumps!

Tom Nelson Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

Forgive me for beig old school, but what about "Boris the Spider" by The Who. It makes me nervous thinking what's crawling around the basement at night!!

RP Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

GeeMoney, the video for "Torture" literally gave me nightmares after watching it. The eyeballs? *brrrr*

HD Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

Tia: Thanks to you I know that I am not the only person who gets freaked out by "Incense and Peppermint".
Two songs that I really like but are a little creepy (for me anyway) are "Hey You" by Pink Floyd and "Save a Prayer" by Duran Duran.

E Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins. The urban legend behind it creeps me out and I can't listen to that song without thinking about it.

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

Many songs from Alkaline Trio, but a few worth noting:
Sadie: About Charles Manson, complete with a quote from the trial where he is described as god.
Continental: About a friends addiction to heroin.
Private Eye: Could be an episode of CSI put to song
Hell Yes: Satan Worship
This could be love: Step by step instructions on desposing of a body.

Great Halloween music. I've had them on repeat all day!

lupa Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

"Voodoo Dolly" by Siouxsie and the Banshees. On the live version she totally sounds like she's going crazy.

Anonymouse Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

I agree with Kat!! "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" really really used to give me nightmares!! Boy George's makeup and outfits made him look like a clown to me, and I have a weird fear of clowns and masks. Er, yay, Halloween... No other CC song gave me the chills and freaked me out as much as this.
"Every Breath You Take" also has been listed several times for obvious reasons. But no one's mentioned the abomination that is the Clay Aiken song "Invisible??" "If I was invisible/Then I could just watch you in your room/If I was invincible/I'd make you mine tonight"
Creeeepy.

rubytoo Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

I have agree with T- Hanson's MmmmBop scares the crap out of me

RedAngel Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

Mussorgsky also did a piece called "The Gnome"...which I unfortunately heard for the first time at night. I still can't listen to it when I'm alone.

T Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Mmmmbop - by Hansen

Ames Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

Way back when, girls at school expounding on the Bloody Mary rumor and said that if you said Pina Colada into a mirror you would wake by choking. Taking no chances, I didn't even want to hear the song Pina Colada, which wasn't hard since it wan't popular. But up at my cabin, the radio was on the local top 40 station. It being a small town, it meant it was top 40 from 10 years ago. Pina Colada came on and I went running into the woods to escape it.

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

The soundtrack to Dario Argento's _Suspiria_ is right at the top of the list. Goblin is one hell of a band. This is some truly scary music, right up there with Tubular Bells. I think Elvis Costello's "I Want You" is a good choice for one of the creepiest songs ever--it sounds so innocuous, until you start keying in to the repetition and the lyrics and what is being communicated. How about the version of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" from the opening credits of _Se7en_? It's slowed down and remixed for even more creepiness (also pretty creepy from the Se7en soundtrack is "Love Plus One" by Haircut 100).

newshound23 Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Can't forget about the score from The Shining, when they're driving through the rocky mountains to the Overlook. "Symphonie Fantastique."

Trish Doherty Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

The original version of "Love Rollercoaster," by Ohio Players. It came out when I was really little, and a neighbor kid told us that the scream heard during the song -- which you can hear -- was the actual scream of someone dying while falling off a roller coaster. Then we heard that the scream was actually that of the girl on the album cover being burned by the hot honey being poured over her body. Either way, an eerie scream with what I thought was a real explanation was too much for me. Any time the song came on the radio, I covered my ears and cried until my brothers or sisters changed the station. Even today, when I hear the song -- especially the part leading up to the scream, it just creeps me the hell out. Inexplicably? I still LOVE the song.

GeeMoney Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

"Torture" by The Jacksons. I think the title says it all.

RP Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:10 PM EST

OH! The music for Silent Hill is kinda creepy but that may be more because of the mood of the video game.

Casey Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

Dinosaur Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

David Sylvian's "The Devil's Own" is very eerie. John Cale's version of "Heartbreak Hotel" is terrifying. When he screams that he's so lonely he could die, you believe it.

Of course, the lyrics to "Timothy" by the Buoys are plenty spooky too.

Danielle Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

I also have to add "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield. It's a great song though.

Stephanie T. Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

I agree with Morrissey's "The More You Ignore me", but "Jack the Ripper" is a lot more freaker only because Morrissey is all about the dark sarcastic humor. The chorus of the song is "Crash into my arms, I want you", yet the title is "Jack The Ripper" or as Morrissey put it at his concert in New York last Friday, "What Jack the Ripper thought and the answer is well, how should I know"?

erik Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

anyone here heard of the band Wolf Eyes? not sure it counts as a "scariest song" because they don't really make songs, but they make some really disturbing sounding records.

And I agree with Thriller. I couldn't watch the video when it came out (sure, I was 4, but still...) And its an even scarier song when you're watching a couple hundred inmates re-enact the video.

Elizabeth Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:51 AM EST

I agree with Thriller. I remember it playing at the roller rink when I was a kid and being totally freaked out by Vincent Price's voice. It's an obvious choice, but true.

Sarah Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

I don't know why, but as a kid in the early 90s I was creeped out by Crash Test Dummies' "Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm." Something about all those outcast children with strange problems, combined with the singer's scarily deep voice.

Marie Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

NIN "Closer" I guess the message is... romantic? But that pulsing beat combined with the video makes it downright frightening.

Ryan Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

#1 Crush by Garbage is very creepy and stalkerish. It could be Glenn Close's or Jessica Walter's theme song.

Dylan Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:20 AM EST

Great Halloween morning topic guys! Im throwing 'Cemetary Gates' by Pantera into the ring. Creepy song & it seems like it goes on forever. I also second 'incense and peppermints'. It does sound like an insane asylum anthem. 'Love Rollercoaster' also cause of the urban legend.

Winona Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:20 AM EST

Boris the Spider - The Who. I really like the Who, but I can barely stand to listen to this song, because it's just CREEPY. In that way, though, it's perfect.

Matt Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Without a doubt, "Frankie Teardrop" by Suicide.

Will send your heart into your stomach. Spooky!

gokarm Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

"The More You Ignore me, The Closer I Get..." by Morrissey is pretty creepy. I mean it's this jolly happy ditty bouncing along about a stalker slowly closing in on his prey, and it's in first person, brilliant. I mean, it doesn't scare me because I love the idea of Morrissey stalking me but I suppose if you take Moz out of the picture, it's creepy. Also, creepiest soundtrack music (besides the obvious Halloween score) is the opening music to The Shining. I just heard that today and it set the mood perfectly for thrills and chills.

Catherine Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

Oh, almost forgot: "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" by the Beatles. Uptempo ditty about a guy who kills people with a hammer! : )

Billy O'Bong Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath)
Azathoth (Arzachel)
Careful With That Ax, Eugene (Pink Floyd)
Or Is It Just Me (Rev.Horton Heat)
Old Man Down The Road (John Fogerty)
Gravedigger (New York Rock Ensemble)
Hour Of The Wolf (The Hassles)

Catherine Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

"I'll Be Watching You," by the Police. It even had a video with Sting in stalker mode.
