Snap judgment: 'Pushing Daisies'

Categories: Mini TV Watch, Snap Judgment

Pd_l New network shows these days seem to get cancelled practically before the first commercial break. Before you know it, the pilot you were watching is gone, and some So You Think You Can Spelunk mid-season replacement stands vacuously in its place. Which is why I'm rooting for Pushing Daisies, which premiered last night on ABC. It's too cute, almost sickeningly quirky, but its heart is so pure, and its fanciful world so fully realized that I can't help wishing it a fighting chance. (Watch for an official review in a forthcoming issue of EW.)

The easiest references tend towards the big screen — think Tim Burton's 2003 fantasia Big Fish or 2004's Lemony Snicket — both in the super-saturated colors and deliberate magical realism of the characters and storylines. In the first episode (called "Pielette," a double entendre that actually makes sense in context; wait for it), we are introduced to the town of Coeur de Coeur (yes, that's French for Heart of Hearts), as a boy named Ned bounds across a spectacular CGI-flowered hillside with his beloved dog, who runs into the road and is promptly smooshed by an oncoming truck, leading to a spectacular revelation. Cue the plummy narrator — whom books-on-tape fans may recognize as Jim Dale, the voice of the Harry Potter tomes — telling us, "Young Ned could touch dead things and bring them back to life." And indeed, the pooch bounds back up like a whack-a-mole, alive and well. But, as the narrator also tells us, this particular gift came with "no box, no instructions, and no manufacturers' warranty."

Accordingly, when Ned's mother drops dead of a blood clot while baking pies in the family's Norman Rockwell kitchen, Ned brings her back, only to discover that while his first touch brings life, the second touch brings death; a goodnight kiss sends Mom promptly back to the netherworld. Also, as we are told, the dead can be be brought back for only one minute without consequence; beyond that, someone else in close proximity has to die. So it is that Ned accidentally kills the father of his beloved next door neighbor, a freckled pixie of a girl named Chuck. Her dad's death means poor Chuck is sent to live with two wacky maiden aunts, thus signalling the end of Ned's first — and most impactful — love affair.

Cut now to grown-up Ned (Lee Pace, a Thomas Cavanagh doppelganger with wounded eyes and very expressive brows), now an emotionally crippled piemaker — Mom's pastry-related moment of departure made him a little bit obsessed. His best friend remains, actually, Man's Best Friend: the same dog he saved so many years before (which, of course, he can't pet without killing, calling for the use of surrogate "hand" made of wood). His circle of friends seems to consist of Detective Emerson Cod (Chi McBride), the only soul who knows his secret, and waitress Olive Snook (the bodaciously curvy Kristin Chenoweth), who pines secretly for Ned, and lives next door to him in an apartment that can only be described as a floral nursery vomiting all over ten tons of chintz.

Ned and Emerson are a team of sorts, having discovered that "murders are much easier to solve when you can ask the person who killed them." Thus, the pair awaken deceased victims for less than a minute, get the goods, and collect the rewards. Enter the case of the Lonely Traveler: a young woman fished out of cruise-ship waters, strangled mysteriously. It doesn't take a Mensa member to suspect that once Ned opens the coffin, he comes face to face with childhood sweetheart Chuck (British actress Anna Friel, being resolutely American here). A minute, of course, turns out to be far too brief for smitten Ned, and he lets the shady funeral-home director take the fall. Honestly, so would we; "luminous" is a word way overused, but Friel (pictured) is absolutely charming, a kewpie-faced Zooey Deschanel type with cupid's bow lips and a twinkle too alive to be, well, dead. Also, she uses expressions like "hoisted by my own petard" and calls hugs "emotional Heimlichs." Sold!

Watching the two embark on a mission to solve her murder — it involves a shady travel agency, her two housebound aunts (nice to see Swoozie Kurtz again, and in a jeweled eye patch, no less), and two ceramic monkeys — isn't so much about the destination but the journey. All we know is that as much as they may wish to, Chuck and Ned can never share another kiss... leading them to touch the two monkeys together in a smashing makeout session, which in turn leads to the discovery that said monkeys are not so much ceramic as solid gold. Wherever this leads — and whether I can involve myself in the Victorian idea of a love affair without physical contact — I am, frankly, a little smitten. Still, I can see the kind of diabetic coma such kooky cuteness could induce.

Readers, what do you think — is this one of the most original shows of the season, or merely a network exec's bad acid trip? Can Ned and Chuck sustain a life without regular whoopie, let alone hand-holding? Do monkeys not make everything a little bit more awesome?

I so glad that we as american viewers lap up what ABC has gifted us when they foolishly took pushing daisies off the air. Now we are going to be subject to more caustically redicualous and disgusting shows like wife swap, true beauty, the real housewifes of who cares, and the 39th season of american idol. Thanks ABC and thanks to all the american viewers. WE do lap up those shows like a dog laps up his own vomit.

Cherie Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 01:20 AM EST

This is the best show ever! ABC is so foolish to cancel an award winning show like this. I really really REALLY hope another network has the sense to pick it up.
As for me, I had just discovered the show when they cancelled it. I am sure that if they bring it back it will be a forever hit.
Here is to hoping that they can bring it back from the dead.
SAVE PUSHING DAISIES!!!

Gillian Denny Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

PUSHING DAISIES is one of the best shows on TV. It's different. It's intelligent. It's funny. The cast are amazing. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL

Pangolin Sun, Oct 28, 2007 at 02:32 AM EST

This truly is the best new show of the season -- perhaps the best new show in years! I love it and desperately want it to stick around.

Marty Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

Being a huge fan of "Wonderfalls" and "Dead Like Me" (Bryan Fuller's previous series), I was happy to see "Pushing Daisies" this season. It is my favorite new series of the season, and someone else must think so, as ABC just gave it a full season order. Way to go ABC!

Stiles Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

What a refreshing new show this fall. The innocent (albeit quickly reestablished) realtionship between Ned and Chuck makes this a show worth watching to replace all that reality-show junk found on every channel these days. The quirky dialogue and Seuss-like narration reminds me of old 50s movies with Hepburn/Grant or Hudson/Day. I really hope ABC recognizes a good show when they have one!

Meg Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:25 PM EST

What can I say? I absolutely LOVE this show and this is the reason why I count the days (though not as precise as the series does)'til Wednesday. I have always fallen in love with original shows (i.e. "Lost," "X-Files") and shows with quirky characters and/or plots (i.e. "NCIS"). I heard rave reviews of this show and had to check it out. And boy, it delivered! I am officially in love with the cinematography, quirky storytelling (Jim Dale is brilliant!), and characters (Ned and Chuck are the cutest couple on TV right now) and for being brave and going against the mainstream. Delightful, original, sweet, funny (Emerson's "You couldn't have just scooted back"), quirky, smart, and I could just go on. Hopefully ABC will realize this bright gem's potential and give it a second season renewal (it's early, but still.) and people will hopefully appreciate it. Great cast, great plots, great sets, great everything. You have no idea what you're missing 'til you've seen "Pushing Daisies."

Lance Thu, Oct 11, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

Wow! That was a brilliant begginning to what I hope will be a fruit-ful (pun intended) run! Please don't cancel this after a full season, ala Jericho.

Kelly Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

The quirkiness, the super sweetness, the creative writing, and the fanastical elements all add up to my new favorite thing to look forward to on Wednesdays!

JJ Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

Loved it!

Valerie Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

Excellent show so far. I love the concept, the colors, it is very different from everything else on TV !

Asfan Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

Too much of a safe review, didn't take a side

Heres my review:

Allison Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

Fantastic. I was immediately charmed. It's such a color-saturated fairy tale with a lot of charm and heart and wit. Love the voice-over narration - it makes it feel like storytime, which is exactly right for this type of show. Loved it.

Erob Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 06:45 PM EST

for a show that clearly has so much attention to small details - I was surprised to see the town sign (twice!) "Couer de Couer" instead of the properly spelled Coeur de Coeur that I had seen in reviews (assuming they wanted to use the French word for heart instead of a nonsense word)

Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 03:50 PM EST

The pilot for this show was astounding: camerawork, voice over (thank you marvelous Jim Dale), scenery, and acting included. The colors were brilliant, the script phenomenal, and the concept creative. I'm sticking around, anticipating what strange murder will be solved next week and what it will bring to the trio (besides a lot of money). I'm hoping to see it develop and perhaps murders will be strung over multiple episodes, but only every so often. I can't wait for episode two.

Jager Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 03:01 AM EST

Absolutely BRILLIANT for a broadcast-TV program. On the same track as "Dead Like Me" (thank you Bryan FULLER - not Bryan SINGER as one commentator noted- Singer was X-Men).

I'm hoping that they keep this one going. This kind of top-notch production, writing, directing and acting cannot be cheap, but dang guys, we watch near 10 minutes of commercials for every 30 minutes of (ahem) programming, you'd think you could come up with something more original than "Are You Smarter Than A Brain-Eating Amoeba?"

(Well, no, I guess not... )

Rachel Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

Haven't seen this many "loved it" declarations for one show in a long time. Let me add mine! Alway a treat to see Ms Kurtz

Sam Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

Do you think Ned's father has the same power? Why else would he ship Ned to boarding school and then we never see him again. Is he as scared as Ned about touching someone. I'm guessing "dad" will show up at some point.

lmw Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

Best new show. Period.

As to the name thing, I think it's just this year's trend.

"Chuck" is the new "Jack."

AnRod Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

I resisted watching this show because I felt it might be a bit too morbid (ala Six Feet Under) but I decided to give it a chance (at my husband's insistance) and I'm so glad I did. It's a very quirky show with INTRIGUING characters and I loved the whole "loving you from afar" aspect of the main characters, as they're not able have any type of physical contact. I found the way the characters still managed to expressed their feelings for each other very endearing. Great show and I'm going to continue watching it and encourage others to do likewise.

Beth Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

Just caught the replay on Friday night and loved it! Loved the dialogue, the Seinfeld-esque tying together of small details, and how matter-of-fact the dead people all are. And the aunt at the end, "I can hold my breath a REALLY long time."

BHM1304 Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

I loved the show. Adored the cast, how can you go wrong with Ellen Green and Swoozie Kurtz cast as ex-sychronized swimmers? The best part about it, it had a heart which is lacking in nearly every American television show that is produced.

Screw the haters, I love this show. Would you rather watch "Kid Nation" or that piece of sh!t that Howie Mandel hosts on NBC at 8:00 that somehow hasn't been cancelled yet?

trevor Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Absolutely amazing. My favorite new show, and better than most of my old ones!!!

Jonathan F. Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 10:56 AM EST

I enjoyed it a lot. So delightfully different than anything on TV, it hardly feels like a television show.

To Scott Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:25 AM EST

I don't know how tall Lee Pace is, but Kristin Chenoweth is really 4'10"!

Scott Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:41 AM EST

A) I LOVED the show.
B) I am very happy that Chi McBride has finally found a role that suits him perfectly. He is always so great, but this part plays to all his strengths.
C) Did anybody notice the height difference between Lee Pace and Kristen Chenoweth? Are they really that tall/short? Or is that a character quirk?
D) What's with the prevalence of the name "Chuck" this season, between "Daisies" Chuck, "Chuck", and "Back To You"'s Chuck Darling? I don't know one person named Chuck in real life.

Katya Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:31 PM EST

I loved it! I cannot wait to watch every week.

sam Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:22 PM EST

Loved it! There aren't many shows that I can't wait to see what is going to happen next on--this is one of those. It looks beautiful, the narration is great and the characters memorable. What a refreshing change from reality junk and crime shows!

rosie Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

I guess I am missing something that everyone else seems to have found. I thought it was way to cute and overly sentimental. It is not a bad show, but I do think it is definitely overrated. It is not appointment TV for me.

Henry Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 06:27 PM EST

Loved this show, loved the pilot. Can't wait to see more. I think Kristen Chenowith's character is superfluous but that's just about my only major complaint. Some of the lines are a little cheesy.

Notice that the monkeys are a nod to the previous quirky series created by Bryan Fuller: Wonderfalls.

SuzieC Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

Love it! So much better than I expected! I don't even know where to begin. Te colors, the storyline, the characters. It's very Lemony Snicket's. Amazing! One of my favorite new shows this season.
I know where I'll be Wednesday nights.

Houstonian Jen in DC Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

As a fan of Wonderfalls, I am so excited to see Pushing Daisies. Lee Pace is my new fall TV crush. He (with the help of make-up, lighting, and fab writing) is dreamy.

Chi McBride had the best lines. "B****, I was in proximity!"

vw Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

Right off I thought of Tim Burton and Desperate Housewives. Really liked the quick dialogue and quirkiness and I was pleasantly surprised when Swoozie Kurtz appeared on my tv. That said, I kept feeling like it was lacking something I couldn't put my finger on.At this point it's not a must for me to see but I'll watch it before anything else in that time slot just for the originality it brings.

TD Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

"That's not crazy. It's symmetrical."

I just LOVED that. But can't Ned and Chuck wear gloves so they can hold hands? Otherwise, this may be too painful to watch.

DanOregon Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

Thanks for id'ing Jim Dale. I looked for him on screen thinking it was John Forsythe doing the VO. Good show. Looking forward to where they take it.

Joe Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Thank you, Leah Greenblatt. If I had not read this post I would never have heard of the show or checked it out online today. What an amazing cast, and the hokey premise actually works extremely well.

Mike Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:56 PM EST

I thought the show was very entertaining. I question however, its long term future. Can you create 100 good story lines around this very quirky premis?
If I knew that coming in contact with a person would mean my instant death I would stay very far away from that person. I would keep at least a couple 100 miles between us at all times.

RustyT Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

I totally appreciate whimsy and oddball characters and ideas, but this first episode laid them on so thick and unrelenting that I could not catch a breath. It was as if the producers thought, "We may only get one episode on the air, so let's put EVERYTHING in it." That's not to say that I didn't generally like it, but please, must every third name be a cutesy repetition ("Darling..Darlings," "Coeur de Coeur," "Boutique...Boutique," etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.)? If they just throttled down the over-the-top zaniness and let the characters develop a little more, they would have a show that more people could relate to. And 1 thing kept nagging me... how could he possibly have avoided having that dog jump on him or even brush up against him all these years? (cf. how that boutique woman accidentally touched him and died within less than a minute) And I love Jim Dale's voice, but can't they "show, not tell" a little more? There was way too much reliance on narration (a sign of lazy writing).

Gocubs Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

I loved this show! Charlie/Wonka meets the Adams Family meets DLMe and sprinkled with whit and humor. Please, ABC, don't be hasty. This show will need some love, some hugs and lots of patience. Man, I totally want to devour a pie now too. Who else is hungry watching that show?

Lesley Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

blaze- thank you; I could not figure out how I knew the other aunt. I love Ellen Greene, though I have not seen her in much recently. Good show, great actors, cute premise.

lyn Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:30 PM EST

I love PD, the narration & look & writing is pretty amazing. Chuck & Ned are good, i hope they can get together because viewers might get pissed.

orville Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:29 PM EST

I loved it too. I just hope that its originality doesn't become tired too soon. I'm not sure how well this concept will carry into further seasons. It's too bad that the "limited edition" concept in TV never caught on in America (like in Britain). We tend to milk an idea or a hit until it dies a painful death, a shadow of what it originally was. Some ideas have an expiration date and should end while people can look back on it with good thoughts--wanting more, but knowing that it's better that there wasn't another season.

Ellipsian Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

Bryan Fuller has a hit on his hands...who knew?! Oh wait...I did! "Wonderfalls" cemented the man as one of my favorite writer/creators (amongst the likes of Joss "Buffy" Whedon, Rob "Veronica Mars" Thomas and J.J. "Lost" Abrams) and I couldn't be more thrilled that his little "Pielette" delivered both the goods and the viewers. Kudos, Mr. Fuller. Can't wait to see where you take us.
Oh--anyone else want to see Jaye from "Wonderfalls" show up? Now THAT would be fun!

Eric Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

I thought Pushing Daisies was fanastic. Totally lived up to how much I had built it up in my mind. Yay. Also, ratings are in and it won it's time period, almost matching Private Practice in total viewers. Hopefully it keeps it up. I felt good after watching PD and I want to keep feeling that way.

Guardian1 Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

This program is a hoot! It is so inventive, amusing, and craftily written. I love Jim Dale's narration and the whole quirky, imaginative premise. I am really interested in seeing what happens next, so I will be watching for as long as it lasts. I hope it will be on for a long time.

Aaron Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

Wow, well I'll be in the minority here and say I thought it was only ok. I love the characters--and the performances--but I really don't care for the premise (too contrived/too many arbitraty rules) or the world (too cute for comfort) or the plotting (the whole murder mystery wasn't very engaging). And my God, please ease up on the voiceover narration. Lee Pace and Anna Friel, however, are fantastic and they just might be enough to make me check out the second episode. But I'm glad everyone's liking it--maybe this new season will have a bonafide hit after all.

Snsetblaze Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

Loved it. Not sure whether I liked Reaper or Pushing Daisies better. Chuck is third. But of all three shows Pushing Daisies has the perfect cast. Not only was I glad to see Swoosie Kurtz, but I was also glad to see Ellen Greene (using nearly the same voice as her Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors.) Chi McBride was also very funny.

Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

Okay, so just to pre-empt what might be the inevitable, should everyone start writing/e-mailing ABC NOW to insist that they keep this incredibly original treasure on the air?

Alex Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

Jim and Pam who? I think Ned and Chuck are TV's new adorable power couple. I loved everything about this show.

Alex Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

I hadn't planned on watching last night, actually had resolutely NOT read anything on this show because I thought it seemed inane...turned it on and fell in love. I, too, am smitten, and am hoping very hard it doesn't get cancelled because I am truly enamored with the wonderful little world they showed us last night. GREAT show :)

j Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

After all of the hype I waited anxiously for this show....and I was disappointed to find a fairy tale instead. The premise is interesting but the attempt is not. sorry.

j Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

thevisitor Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

PUSHING DAISIES is the best show that I have seen since LOST. (Funny how both of them are on ABC. ABC has a knack for getting "fantasy" shows. That should be a wake-up call for both CBS and NBC.) Loved everything about PUSHING DAISIES: writing, acting, directing, art direction, etc. PUSHING DAISIES reminded me more of AMELIE than BIG FISH.

JBus Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

I absolutely loved this show - I'll be rooting for it not to fall victim to the cancellation bug. It seems like too many shows with original concepts of storytelling and some wittiness about them are cancelled prematurely nowadays. I'd rather watch this than one of the hackneyed reality filler shows that ABC could replace it with. If it keeps up the interesting storytelling, I'll watch this one every week.

Noelle Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

LOVED IT. A bright and sparkling Twin Peaks.

Colbstar Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

This was the one show that I was waiting for and I have to say that it delivered on all accounts. From the opening sequence I was hooked. I mean how can you not be hooked after watching a boy frolick through a hillside of flowers only to watch his dog get wacked by an 18-wheeler? I think that everything about it needs to be on TV and I hope that it stays that way.

It will of course be interesting to to see how Ned and Chuck are going to exist without touching, I mean a longing glance can only go so far in a show of this caliber.

And being murdered by a smiley face plastic bag while retreiving a room key from an ice machine while smuggling in ceramic-covered gold monkeys had got to be the funniest way to go in history.

New favorite show.

Lena Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

I was anxiously anticipating this premiere and, to my relief, I LOVED it. I thought it was whimsical and vivid, and the characters are adorable in their quirkiness. I loved the "play dough fun factory of life" line the narrator used to describe the way child-Ned felt about child-Chuck. I'm definitely giving it a season pass on my DVR!

Picky Quirky Watcher Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:35 AM EST

LOVED IT! It's Big Fish meets Willie Wonka and the Frighteners. It was everything I hoped it would be and more with the bright colors and sparkely effects. My only comment is the overuse of double names like DEEDEE but that won't keep from thoroughly enjoying the show.

This is already on the Tivo along with Journeyman.

Pam Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

Fantastic show and my new favorite. Hope it doesn't have the same fate as another great quirky show, Wonderfalls which Fox never gave a chance for a following. Let's hope ABC has more sense.

CoeurDeCoeur Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

One of the best series premieres ever! Refreshing and original (if you've never seen Amelie or Wonderfalls or BigFish). Alas, because I love it, I fear that it will go the way of The Piemaker's mother. Do not go gently into that good night!

Mike Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

PD won its time slot handily! This is such a pleasant surprise. I just assumed somebody would have to be launching SavePushingDaisies.com by the end of the week. Hopefully, positive word of mouth will help these numbers hold in future weeks. Awesome news!

MKS Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Wait! Pushing Daisies got a 8.3 rating - which is really excellent for new shows and it helped ABC win the ratings last night! Now, it's up to the fans and word of mouth to make this the hit it deserves to be.

PJ Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

In "The Frighteners," Chi McBride plays a dead person who collaborates with the living to make money off fake hauntings.

In "Pushing Daisies," Chi McBride plays a living person who collaborates with the dead to make money off murder investigations.

Hm... Chi McBride is following a very specific career path.

All in all, though, this show is a bit twee for me. The way they kept calling the lead "The Piemaker" really struck me as overly, hyper cutesy.

MKS Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

ABC needs to stick with this show! Pushing Daisies is an original, charming show with a fabulous cast - I was smitten from the beginning and will continue to watch it as long it stays on!

Sam Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

I really liked this show, as did my husband, but at the same time, I could tell within five minutes that it will be cancelled. Shows like this just don't last. I hope it does though. I will watch it every week until it is inevitably cancelled.

Beth Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

Although the show was considerably similar to the airiness of desperate housewives (makes sense, both on ABC), it was catchy and adorable. I will be watching it again.

Laura Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

I loved this show! Wasn't sure if I was going to - but I did. Great cast -Hope it doesn't go old too soon.

Hellen Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

I L-O-V-E-D this show! It's programmed in the DVR for the long run!!!!

Ginger Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:05 AM EST

My husband and I both loved this show!! It is sweet and clever, and has extremely funny bits. It's so exciting to have something decent to watch on Tuesdays(Bones,Reaper) AND Wednesday now--GO PUSHING DAISIES!!

Jennie Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

I liked the show, but I think it'll be canceled within 5 episodes because it is too quirky! They should have made a mini-series instead.

Jenn67 Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

I loved it. It was quirky, cute, funny, and downright enjoyable. I hope it sticks around.

Kate Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

I can't even begin to say how much I loved this show! I loved the marration, I loved the art direction. It just gives me a sick feeling in my stomach that something this cool will have to be obliterated from the TV schedule in about a month. It's a really sweet show with a dark undercurrent. Kind of like Dead Like Me but not that heavy.

Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:48 AM EST

LOVED this show. really clever and sweet but pure? the pie store is called "pie hole" and the way he gets his extra money is not exactly ethical. if you say pure AND naughty, might go for that.

Kristi Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

I thoroughly enjoyed it! It is definitely getting a season pass from me! It was so sweet, I am interested in seeing how they can keep the plot going for seasons after season but I’m along for the ride! OH and Leah – "bodacious curvy Kristin Chenoweth" – REALLY?!?! Are you serious? CURVY - REALLY?!?! I’m assuming you mean 'curvy' in another sense other than body type? Maybe personality? She is so sweet, but bodacious and curvy are pretty much the first antonyms I would use to describe her. Maybe "quirkily adorable petite Kristen Chenoweth" anyway... Loved the show, so different and magical!

To you Wonderfalls fans out there, since Bryan Fuller is the executive producer of Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies, did you notice the importance of inanimate monkeys from both shows!

Jenna Fawn Brown Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

It has been years since I was smitten with a show before it even began. I fell in love with Pushing Daisies before I even saw the pie-lette. My heart was joyously not let down. I have sincerely missed prgrams that fill me with this kind of awe and blissful euphoria. I also might like to add that it is wonderful to see a cast so talented that most of them have tony awards. As far as the fact that Chuck and Ned must suffer the outrageous misfortunes of chivilric love, so too did Scully and Mulder. I am personally going to do everything my viewing power to keep this show alive.

While I appreciate the whimsical feel and animation of the show, I am just not sure about it. I will give it another shot but I am not getting the "Show of the Year" vibe from it. I just think it is going to be hard to get a full year's worth of shows out of it. But I definitely agree with the viewer who said it was like watching a "Walgreen's Perfect World" commercial. Hit the nail right on the head!

absolutely unbearable. i was in a coma after 10 minutes. this show will do very well, but i won't be watching it

Matthew Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:26 AM EST

Thinking about it the next day, I love it more. Why can't people embrace quirky, weird, slightly imperfect television shows? Pushing Daisies is beautiful and different for TV. I wish I lived in that world. Genius pilot.

i was so happy to see the review. i watched it from beggining to end last night and i LOVED it!! it's the first show i've been excited about for years! its great! i love the quirkyness and the narrator! it remind me of the new willy wonka movie narrator. i really hope it does good and more people check it out!!

Lori Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

LOVED IT! I didn't think it was too cute or precious. The comparison to Lemony Snicket is right on - technicolor with a wink of fun malevolence. That Jim Dale is a treasure.

Bill Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

Watched it on a whim, but glad I did. Good show to watch with the woman...

Ned's deadpan "Yes I can, that's how I roll." had me howling. The wife had no idea why that struck me as so funny, and I don't either... I think the rapid-fire dialog fit the show to a 'T'!

donner Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

We had a lot of fun with this show last night...we kept saying how it reminded us of a Tim Burton movie, an Edward Gorey drawing, a little XFiles-ish, and the Pie Hole with its dangling cherries inside the shop was so neato...

Its marked on our TiVo for repeat viewings each week...I'm glad a show has finally lived up to the hype...

"One question -- did anyone have problems with the volume on this show? We constantly had to boost it up during the show and lower it during the commercials. Very annoying."
Yes -- same here.

Great start. I agree - very much Big Fish meets Amelie. I think the whole ensemble works really well, except not so sure about Lee Pace (must be in the minority I guess). Looks to be one of the most promising series so far (makes up for Caveman).

Stephanie T. Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:59 AM EST

I think that it's a good program but it's up against Deal or No Deal so the show is probably going to get cancelled within a few months. Hopefully when Cavemen and Carpoolers leave, Pushing Daisies will have a solid place. BTW: Kristen Cheneweth is 4'8. Is it really necessary for the camera person to pan down on her every time Lee Pace is talking to her? If it were me in that position (I'm 5'3), I'd find it offensive.

It's interesting to see the difference between the user reviews of this show (about 99% positive) and the 50/50 split on Bionic Woman last week, where some people HATED it. We'll be travelling next Wednesday, so we know we can't watch anything. After watching both last night, it was a quick decision: PD in DVR - yes, BW - no.

PS -- I agree with those who said regardless of how the series works out, this made for a great short story or mini-movie all on its own.

Jonah Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:50 AM EST

Overall, I liked it, with two disclaimers:
1. Although I normally love to see Chenowith in *anything*,a little of her character's breathy voice goes a long way.

2. I actually burned out on the narrative voice by the end of the episode. Mostly, the narrative tone became too saccharine for my taste. Even Amelie dropped the conceit before the denouement.

Josh Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:46 AM EST

I really, really loved the “pie-lette.” If upcoming episodes are as delightful as that one, Pushing Daisies will be my favorite new show, hands-down. Of course, since every new show I love gets cancelled (Eyes, Studio 60, too many others to list), it'll probably be gone by Christmas. I’m trying not to be a half-empty kinda guy – hopefully, since most of ABC's other shows are doing pretty well, they'll give this one a chance to develop an audience.

I can see how it could be divisive though. My wife didn't like it at all. When the always-awesome Kristen Chenowith said, “I used to think masturbation meant chewing your food…but I don’t anymore,” I was howling. My wife looked over at me and asked, "Why is that funny?" To each his/her own, I guess.

Brandon Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

I really wanted to like it more than I did. I’ll keep watching, but it seemed like the show was just too proud of its own cuteness, and that was grating. Hopefully they’ll be able to find a little better balance between the Technicolor brightness and the dark parts they only touched on briefly here (like the fact that Chuck was supposed to be dead, that Ned killed her father, and that he can never touch her).

AD Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:36 AM EST

Anyone notice the power to bring a person back from the dead but causing someone else to die was the same power that the central character had in Carnivale?

Nicholas Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

For me, it was just ok; not spectacular. I guess this appeals to the Desperate Housewives crowd, with its narration and over-the-top characters. I don't much see the difference between this and last year's NBC show Raines. Quirky, yet not overly funny, and not overly serious.

Dan Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

Enjoyed it. Hope it holds up. The reanimation with a touch was last seen on cable's now defunct Carnivale, which was much darker but good - avail on DVD. With the pies and quirky characters it made me think of Twin Peaks meets Dr. Seuss.

Ed Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

...then next "My So-called Life". Sorry : (

Dance Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:29 AM EST

Breathtaking and amazing. Encourage friends, family, and strangers to watch! We must keep this beautiful and warm show on the air!

Sara Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:29 AM EST

I am with the person who said they admired this more than they loved it. I think that Lee Pace and Anna Friel are marvelous -- stars in the making -- and the pilot was beautiful and enjoyable. But the quirk got in the way of the emotion; Chuck hardly seems to mind that she was brutally murdered, and if she doesn't feel that deeply, it's hard for me to feel for HER deeply. This seemed like something that might have made a better film than a series, too -- I'm not convinced they can tell tons of stories with this setup, and it's not like I'm wild to see what happens next. Still, kudos for trying something different on TV, for the discovery of Lee Pace and Anna Friel and for the most beautifully shot pilot I've ever seen.

Alea Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:28 AM EST

The best thing to come onto television probably ever. It reminded me of all the movies I enjoy. The characters have backgrounds and the sets are actually full. There's a lot going on here and i love it.

Patti Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:28 AM EST

I really liked it, but I was hoping for a more kid friendly show. Isn't there anything on a 8 pm anymore that a 10 year old can watch? My son watched it, but told us at every commercial he didn't like it and please don't put it on Season Pass. I am very afraid to get involved anyway, due to the fact it will probably be cancelled within a month and wasn't even going to watch, but then relented given all the rave reviews.

Robin Thu, Oct 4, 2007 at 09:27 AM EST

Loved this show!! I love the colors, the characters, the story-line. All orginal and different than any of the other new shows on tv that just remind me of something else I've seen. I really hope it sticks around. I know where I'll be every Wed night!
