Snap judgment: Kylie's '2 Hearts'

America is mean — at least when it comes to Kylie Minogue. The adorable pixie is a star the world over, but she's only had two big U.S. hits — "The Loco Motion" in 1988, and "Can't Get You Out of My Head" in 2002. At that rate, Kylie can expect to crack Billboard's top 10 sometime around 2016, but I'm thinking that her new single, "2 Hearts," her first release since battling back from a 2005 breast-cancer diagnosis, might speed up her hit-making timeline.

With a frisky beat, a piano line that chugs along like (dare I say it?) a little locomotive, and the jaunty "WHOOs!" that populate the chorus, "2 Hearts" is nothing short of irresistible. Add a lyrical nod to Stacey Q's "Two of Hearts," and frankly, the music police should be sending a SWAT team to any radio station that refuses to play it. How's that for tough talk?

As for the accompanying video clip, it's a pretty low-budget affair, with Kylie channeling her inner Marilyn, and writhing around on a piano, backed by some glam-rock backup players. Still, the explosion of metallic confetti at the end is a metaphor for what happens to my heart every time I press "replay" on the YouTube clip — it's positively bursting with excitement! ("I'm in love — WHOO! — I'm in love — WHOO!") How 'bout you, PopWatchers?

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Well done to Kylie for doing something new and exciting, from the free sampler on her myspace it sounds like the rest of the new album is just as great!

The song sucks big time. She made attempts in the past to be more alternative and rock oriented and she failed. Her CD's were total flop. She rose back from the death making dance hits. This one will let her back to "forgotten". In the beginning she will get airplay because of the cancer story but this will be it.The song is not catchy at all...and as far as the states are concerned...if it aint no R&B no luck overseas.Even Madge got that right. Back to Kylie - if the whole album is so shitty as the first single - RIP Kylie!!!

Welcome back Kylie, and for the record it is not just the gay community, she has been my pinup girl for a long time now. Love the song it is so infectious and unlike anything she has done before.

I hope the US embraces our pop princess. My prediction is straight to number one in Oz and the UK, and it will do really well in US

If you don't think this sounds like Goldfrapp then your opinions are irrelevant.

Great review and spot on--nice to see Ent weekly sticking up for Kylie (even if you guys have a bad track record with her sister Dannii who has done some great dance music). I know it's almost cliche to say but in an era when most of our fun pop divas are becoming messes, Kylie's constant profesionalism and desire to *entertain* stand out all the more.

As for those who miss disco Kylie--don't worry, nearly the whole rest of the album is dance/pop of the highest order--Kylie actually ahd to pull some stirngs to get this song released as the lead single--her label were against it but ultimately I think it was smart to go for somethign a bit different... Can't wait for when In My Arms comes out though :D

I love Kylie Minogue, but this song makes me miss disco Kylie.

Ellipsian Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

Hmmmmm...I'm sorry, but I'm not smitten, Slezak. It's a'ight. That said, I'm all about the Minogue-ifying of America; she's grand, and deserves greater exposure in the States. Here's rooting for Kylie!

First listen: "Umm... okay." Second listen: "Wow, those Woo-hoo's are fun." Third listen: "I can't believe how much this reminds me of the Stray Cats but like, sexy." Fourth listen: "I think I might love this song." Fifth listen: "Kylie is genius, this is unlike anything she's done before, I love, love, love, love it."

it's awesome!! but DO NOT expect it to be a hit over here, because it's good, haha. anyway, yeah, i don't see it being huge in america, but again, i could care less. i'll buy it anyway.

Gringo Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 09:41 AM EST

maybe i need to give it a few more spins, but i'm enjoying her cover of 'love is the drug' far more at the moment.

fredric Sun, Oct 14, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

Well, if there are comparisons to Goldfrapp, then that means that yet again the track will be big in the UK and have a small (yet devoted) following here.

Is she in love with a strict machine?

Ar Sun, Oct 14, 2007 at 02:35 AM EST

I really like it! Go Kylie!!

Mab Sat, Oct 13, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

I love this! Sultry, sexy and...just great to see her performing again.

Tomf Sat, Oct 13, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

I love this. Go Kylie x

Roon Sat, Oct 13, 2007 at 06:50 AM EST

Watch for Kylie guest starring on this year's "Doctor Who" Christmas special -- "Voyage of the Damned." She's going to play a waitress on the Titanic who teams up with David Tennant's Doctor.

I don't get the Goldfrapp comments.. yes the video has a 5 piece glam-rock band although kylie's look like a all female band. But the mood is completely different. This is more rocky and true Glamrock while golldfrapp is electro. The video ok. but the song sounds nothing like Goldfrapp and i have all their (3) albums. And the Christina comparisment is even funnier. Kylie has done this Blonde hair red lips (Marylin) look some times before. good single, but think the second single will be the one that will rock the charts

Anna Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

I think "Love at First Sight" might have been a regional hit because I've never heard the song before an I listen to the radio all the time. "CGYOOMH" I still hear quite often.

I was going to comment on this new song but, to be honest, I've forgotten it already. Glad to see she's back and doing well though!

mamasay Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

work it miss kylie.....cant wait for the album....looking forwardt o some new stuff as well from madonna and whitney....the dynamic trio is back!!!

Snarf Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

Fantastic. I don't think the general population in North America "gets" Kylie cause they can't lighten up and imbrace the cheese. Oh and Slezak, if you want a really good Kylie Track? Try the Sissor Sisters' remix of "I Believe In You".

peach Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

Love it! It's fun and very catchy. It's Goldfrapp-ish but they didn't really get much radio play here either so I don't think anyone will notice!

Tom Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

I love Kylie. She is so consistent... she rarely lets me down. Like Madonna, each album is different and unique. This one is like "Love at First Sight" and "Slow" in that there is something about it that just grabs you.

PRandy Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 06:27 PM EST

For the record, Slezak, Love At First Sight is perhaps KyKy's biggest radio hit in the U.S. Still gets more play that Can't Get You Out Of My Head.

Phil Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Its not as infectious as the 1st time I heard "CGYOOMH", but its definite got hit potential! I gotta agree with BilliamE, it does kinda remind me of "Black Velvet" too, with of course a lil Goldfrapp in the mix. Haven't seen hair that blond since Xtina was working those locks last year while promoting "Back To Basics", but the video is fun & worlds better than the new Britney clip for "Gimme More". I hope they actually decide to release this in the U.S.

bb Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 05:17 PM EST

Yep it sounds like Goldfrapp, can't wait for the re-mix that will be much better, that song is a little slow for me. But Damn! she looks good in that video.

Marci Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

hmmm....I don't much care for it. Seems kinda boring to me. I like some of Kylie's songs. Just not this one.

pat Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

I like it...although it does sound like a lost track from Goldfrapp's last album.

dont get it Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

I think she is only adored by the gay community

junior Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 04:46 PM EST

I LOVE the new Kylie and think that this is a welcome change of pace for her as well as in line with her past music. She looks great in the video and I can't wait for the new album. Do I sound like a fan?

BilliamE Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

I have no problem resisting this... Don't know why, but it reminds me of 'Black Velvet' by Alannah Myles.
