Name that tune: Your favorite musical moments from scripted TV

Oct 22, 2007, 03:42 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 100% Pure Cheese, Television

Confession: I'm still singing "Day Man," the original tune that Charlie and glam-rock fanatic Dennis (Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, respectively) performed on the Oct. 11 episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I can't decide whether I prefer the scene of them writing the ditty in Charlie's apartment, or of them singing it live at Paddy's in wigs and codpieces.

This isn't the only musical-themed obsession I'm currently experiencing courtesy of a TV show...

Over the weekend, while watching some Psych repeats saved on my DVR, I became obsessed with Shawn and Gus' rendition of a-ha's "Take on Me," performed in the July Season 2 opener in which they went undercover to protect a Simon Cowell-like judge (Tim Curry) on an American Idol-style talent show for duos. Watch the clip below. (Then watch them perform Tears for Fears' "Shout.")

I also can't stop sitting at my computer and replaying this promo for Carpoolers. I dare you to watch it and not air drum. (Fortunately, I have recently moved into an office.)

So what are your favorite musical moments from scripted TV? Feel free to go old school, like Suzanne crashing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on Designing Women, or The Cosby Show lip-synch to Ray Charles' "(Night Time is) The Right Time." (I can't find that on YouTube... and it hurts me.)

i have horrible memory, so I can only think as far back as a few weeks. Kristen Chenoweth in Pushing Daisies singing "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was awesome. It almost made me buy a ticket to a Broadway musical. Almost.

Emily Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 10:42 AM EST

My fave is absolutely the Cosby Show episode (both of them), but does anyone remember that spin off from Growing Pains, "Just the 10 of Us"? (or something like that). The sisters formed that singing group and performed at the local pizza joint... a lot of those were totally 80s and pretty spaztacular!

lori Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 08:21 PM EST

arrested development - the charlie brown theme when anyone has been rejected and feeling dejected

friends - ross & rachael singing baby got back to emma

south park - cartman singing kyle's mom's a b**ch

the simpsons - mr. burns singing see my vest (watched it tonight and can't get it out of my head . . .see my loafers, once were gophers . . . grizzly bear underwear)

scrubs - ted & the others singing somewhere over the rainbow and many many others they have done

Dan Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 07:25 PM EST

-When J.D. dances to Kung Fu Fighting in the elevator
- In Arrested Development, the recurrence of the song "Big Yellow Joint" whenever someone gets high or the banana stand is mentioned
- Again in Arrested when Liza Minelli decries Tobias' version of "New York, New York"
- "Guy Love" from Scrubs
- Andy's "Rockin' Robin" ringtone from The Office

Katya Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 06:45 PM EST

Love me love me
say that you love me
fool me fool me
go on and fool me
love me love me
pretend that you love me
leave me leave me
just say that you need me

Did you just picture Jim singing it on The Office? Yep, that's what I see every time I sing it too.

Lori Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

Scrubs - Colin Hay (from Men at Work) singing Overkill. My favorite Scrubs music moment.

Lora Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

Father Ted. "My Lovely Horse." Who's with me???

Also, since The X-Files has been mentioned, how about Scully's version of "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog," sung to Mulder during their night in the woods?

pai Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

Martha's right. The Final Countdown should be up there. It never ever failed to solicit a perfect chuckle.

newshound23 Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

Dr Green succumbing on ER in Hawaii to the sounds of "Somewhere over the Rainbow." So sad. The last scene of Friends with Jefferson Airplane's "Embryonic Journey" playing as the camera pans to their keys on the counter. House, MD driving his motorcycle through the countryside to Elvis Costello's cover of "Beautiful". Charlotte walking down the aisle to marry Trey to "Scotland the Brave" in SATC. The team winning the state championship and having a parade to "Devil Town" on Friday Night Lights.

Stephen Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

When Jesse burst into "I'm so Excited" on Saved by the Bell while in an induced state. It was hard to learn a moral lesson when I was laughing too damn hard.

Stephanie T. Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 11:57 AM EST

Eugene Levy's Gino Vanelli impersonation. He keeps on turning around and eventually becomes The Wolfman.

Gringo Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

I love this show! I'm a little afraid to admit that this song is actually kind of catchy...case in point, it's currently been stuck in my head for days.

Martha Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

Many have mentioned "Arrested Development," but no one's pointed to Gob's use of "The Final Countdown" in his numerous crappy magic tricks. When he and Buster danced around the coffin to that song at the model house, I almost fell off my couch laughing. Good times.

Stephanie T. Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

KIH Terrier Song

rockgolf Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

ER: Gloria Reuben attends the funeral of a young boy she had been caring for. She asks if she can sing one of his favorite songs. By Green Day. Everyone expects the worst, then she sings "Time Of Your Life" a capella. You'd have to be a stone not to tear up.

Amber Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

Anytime Turk dances on Scrubs:

Todd Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

1. Robin Sparkles singing "Lets go to the mall" on How I Met Your Mother

2. Justin singing "Somewhere" from the season 1 finale of Ugly Betty

3. Ted's band performing "Somewhere over the rainbow" on Scrubs

4. The creepy old guy performing "Somewhere thats green" on Family Guy

5. Lip Syncing "More than a feeling" on Scrubs

LaDeDah Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 09:23 AM EST

I agree that the best recent one was Andy's Take A Chance On Me on the office. However, I loved the Roseanne where they are all outside playing and singing, and Bonnie sings You Really Got A Hold On Me. She was so awesome....what a voice.

Winona Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

ANYTHING by Ted's band on Scrubs, but I'm a barbershop/acappella fanatic, so that explains that. And the Drew Carey/How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying episode.

Sandy Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 09:12 AM EST

Everyone's covered "Scrubs" so far, but I thought William Shatner's recent crooning of "You are My Sunshine" on "Boston Legal" was touching and surprisingly sweet. Who'd have thunk the Shat was capable of that? Also have to mention "South Park"'s Cartman. His "Come Sail Away" is still the gold standard....

Beez Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 09:03 AM EST

I've driving everyone at work crazy singing "werewolf bartmitzvah" from 30 rock. "boys becoming men, men becoming wolves!"

abp Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 08:58 AM EST

I realize I am one of about 17 people across the globe who still watches ER, but still -- I'd like to offer the "Morris can sing!" reveal from Season 12's "All About Christmas Eve" episode.

RP Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 08:20 AM EST

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Metalocalypse! Don't you folks like coffee? (Real coffee? From the hills of Columbia?) Seriously, the Duncan Hills jingle from the first episode is made of awesome.

I would also like to point out the episode of Futurama, "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" where Fry writes an opera for Leela. The ending is sweet.

"I Wrote This Song A Long Time Ago" (Tupac's latest hit) from the Chappelle Show.

SNL's Cowbell skit and Lazy Sunday skit.

Everyone has already said it but the "Once More With Feeling" episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is probably the best musical moment on television.

Al Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 08:08 AM EST

Scrubs Musical - Everything comes down to Poo - Which reminds me I CAN'T WAIT FOR SCRUBS TO BE BACK ON!

Catherine Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

Ally McBeal: so much song, but especially when Robert Downey Jr. sang the Christmas song River at the piano. Beautiful.

Jess Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 06:42 AM EST

Chandra Wilson singing "God Bless the Child" under her voice to her newborn infant on Grey's Anatomy....amazing. Chills down spine. (Will we get a duet with Sara Ramirez this season?)

joanna Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 03:16 AM EST

Ack! Almost forgot -- anytime anyone sang on Gilmore Girls, especially their rendition of "Hollaback Girl"... actually that's kind of scary...

joanna Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 03:08 AM EST

In no particular order...:
Scrubs: anytime Ted and the gang sang; the musical episode -- you gotta love that "Guy love, that's all it is! Guy love! He's mine I'm his!"
Supernatural: whenever Dean sings -- Blue Oyster Cult's "Fire of Unknown Origin" and REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling".
Fresh Prince: anytime Carlton got the urge to dance to Tom Jones.
One Tree Hill: when Mouth and the boys did karaoke to "Baby Got Back"; when Nathan and Lucas listened to "Holiday" by Doktor Kosmos in the car; the first time hearing it and looking very puzzled, the second time actually singing along.
The O.C.: in the second Chrismukkah episode where Seth tries to write a Chrismukkah song and suggests JoJo sing it, and at the very end of the episode when he tries to sing another jingle he hopes will help Chrismukkah's popularity: "Moses and Jesus, they both had beards."
Veronica Mars: when Veronica sang "One Way or Another".
30 Rock: any time Jenna busts out a verse of "Muffin Top".

Leslie Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 01:39 AM EST

Speaking of "Greatest American Hero", what about George's answering machine: "Believe it or not, George is not home. Please leave a message at the beep..."

Abby Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 01:38 AM EST

-Anything by Ted's band on 'Scrubs' (especially 'Charles in Charge')

-The oft mentioned 'Let's Go to the Mall'

-Lane's band playing 'Greatest American Hero' on 'Gilmore Girls' and their alt rock version of "A Mighty Fortress is our God"

Alex Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 12:49 AM EST

There are so many to choose from, but since you brought up "It's Always Sunny," I just have to say my favorite moment from them was when they sat around the bar singing Extreme's "More Than Words." I could not stop laughing. Plus I've totally done that with my friends too.

Pai Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 12:27 AM EST

Oops ... Glenn Gordon Caron is a MASTER at this.

Moonlighting--Good Lovin' in the wedding scene of the Shakespeare episode and Sympathy for the Devil when accidentally becomes part of an assisted suicide. Oh also Papa Was a Rolling Stone, when David is following Maddie's cheating father.

Then on Medium, awesome idea of utilizing "I Will Survive" as Allison was haunted by a girl killed who had the song playing when she died.

Pai Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 12:23 AM EST

Arrested Development: The recurrence of "It Ain't Easy Being White" -- like when the tape of that kept Michael away from his brother's woman

Freaks and Geeks: Nick singing Lady L about Lindsey ... and Ken abruptly putting a stop to that when he was about to sing it in front of Lindsey

X-Files: Mulder's version of Shaft! Kudos to those who have mentioned that, good one!

House: The episode in which Elvis Costello's version of Beautiful was used. I was genuinely touched -- and I'm not a fan of that song in the least littlest bit.

WKRP in Cincinnati: First episode Johnny Fever is acting out some choir's version of "You're Having My Baby." Totally hilarious.

tia77 Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:50 PM EST

I loved when the gang sang "In the Jungle" to the monkey on Friends.
Also, when Grissom and Doc Robbins are singing and doing air guitar in the morgue. Awesome.
And how could we forget Charlie (RIP) singing "You all Everybody" on Lost.

Meghan Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:30 PM EST

Also, "The Daves I Know" from Kids in the Hall. Classic sketch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIAOcDfBS3M

editorgirl Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 10:51 PM EST

Freaks and Geeks: When Nick serenades Lindsay with Styx's "Lady"

Flight of the Conchords: If That's What You're Into

The Office: any time Andy belts one out.

socgradstudent Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

1) Without a doubt, The Golden Girls: Dorothy and Sophia as Sonny and Cher
2) Scrubs: The Worthless Peon's and The Facts of Life Theme Song

4)Frasier: When Frasier butchers Buttons & Bows at the PBS telethon
5). Arrested Development: The two duets of Afternoon Delight

Maureen Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 09:54 PM EST

Salivating over Jordan Catalano singing "I Want to be Sedated" on "My So-Called Life." It was the moment I realized I'd turned into a dirty old woman (and I was only in my late 20s at the time).

Wow , it's not until you start thinking about it that you realize how many great moments there are...
1. Golden Girls - Miami song.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0in244FNk8E
2. Buffy OMWF - my fav bit is where Giles & Tara harmonize at the end of "Wish I Could Stay"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ANREsVWl8pA
3. Ted's group singing "The Facts of Life" on Scrubs
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZYU-NgvoxSw
4. X-Files - Mulder sings Shaft
http://youtube.com/watch?v=f5Vby-6ZnF4
5. Night Time is the Right Time - Cosy Show - THANKS to Sarah for finding that!

Kimberly Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 08:33 PM EST

There is this clip from when I was a kid - I can't remember the show - I was YOUNG - but it was just "and the Pips". Four guys singing the back-up lyrics to "Midnight Train to Georgia" complete with dancing. Just thinking about kills me. :-)

Kirby Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

Definitely Arrested Development. Afternoon Delight and It Ain't Easy Bein White (....it ain't easy bein' brown... all this pressure to be bright... i got childrens all over town!)

mGoode Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 08:01 PM EST

Another vote for the Buffy "once more whith feeling" episode. I have the soundtrack and I freely admit to listening to it from time to time. I also kinda liked the recent Pushing Daisies "Grease" number. Very strange and out of the blue.

Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 07:32 PM EST

Justin singing Good Morning Baltimore in Ugly Betty.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaN8Zl9ulKo

'Nough said.

KateDFW Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 07:18 PM EST

Hands down the funniest skit with music was Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley auditioning for Chippendales to Lover Boys "Working for the Weekend". Everytime I hear that song I think of Chris Farley dancing and doing the belly roll. I laugh every time I hear it!

Chad Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

1. On "Cheers" when Emma Thompson, playing Nanny G, a British Television children's entertainer (and Frasier's first wife, pre-Lillith) sings "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to a group of children, but directs it, thick with meaning and laced with her phone number, at Frasier. (Woody and Sam, enthralled with Nanny G, are also seduced.) Lillith goes crazy; girl fight ensues.

2. "Respect the Meat" by Crabman on "Earl." So good, it could almost be a hit.

3. "Mana Mana" on the Muppets. Also, the Muppet version of "Stop Children What's That Sound," with the muppet animals hiding in the woods; did they turn an anti-war song into an anti-hunting song? And I'll always remember calling a local radio station and asking for "Tomorrow," by Ethel Merman and the Muppets. How could I have known it was from "Annie"? I was, like, eight.

kats Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

I think this had music, I hope it had music or I'll feel silly, but on Frasier the episode where Niles was getting ready for a date. He was ironing, cooking and sewing at the same time, ended up pricking himself and setting the couch on fire. One of the funniest things I've seen on t.v. ever.

kats Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

el~
I totally agree with both of yours as well. Buffy the Musical was fantastic. Loved the duet with Xander and Anya. And that was probably my favorite scene from Sports Night, a show I loved.

MF Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:48 PM EST

No contest. David Bowie on Extras:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VayefEYPdV0

Mike Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

Let's Go To the Mall is the best. But, no one has mentioned anything from SNL. D*** in a Box won an Emmy. I Ran (So Far Away) should be nominated next year.

Annie Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

1) "Once More With Feeling"
2) Robin Sparkles and "Let's Go to the Mall"
3) Pam's singing of "On the Wings of Love" accompanied by Dwight's recorder at the bird funeral.

el Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:31 PM EST

The Buffy musical was of course the first thing I thought of (mostly cause I'm slightly obsessed with it right now, and listen to it at work all the time) but the other thing that came to mind was in the Sports Night episode "Dear Louise" the scene at the end where they get kicked out of the bar because Dana dances on the table to "My Boogie Shoes"

Vivi Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:31 PM EST

The classic Fresh Prince episode when there was an earthquake. Will and his (fake from head-to-toe) girlfriend got stuck in the attic/basement. After getting into a fight, Will gives us this lovely song:
I’m stuck in a basement
Sitting on a tricycle
Girl getting on my nerves
Going outta my mind, I thought she was fine
Don't even know if her body is hers.
***
Or whenever "It's Unusual" comes on, I think of Carlton and his infamous dance.

shana Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:19 PM EST

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the Tony-tastic Kristin Chenoweth sang Hopelessly Devoted from Grease on Pushing Daisies this past week.

kats Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

Right now, the Office when Andy and his phone friends sang "Take A Chance On Me" to Angela. Awesome!

Lucy Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

A few favs from 'Cheers':

-when Woody writes that song for Kelly for her birthday (Kelly Kelly Kelly K-e-l-l-y... Why? because you're Kelly Kelly...)
-when a drunken Rebecca tries to seduce Sam with "We've got Tonight"
-when Frasier won't stop using the karaoke machine to sing show tunes.

I also love that episode of Frasier when he tries to sing "Buttons and Bows" for the pledge drive but can't remember the words

Anna Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

Any of the musical numbers from Scrubs, particularly those from Ted's barbershop quartet.

Sarah Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

The Cosby Show is the reason I love Ray Charles: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2belk_cosby-show-sing-night-time-is-the-r_fun

stephen Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

Also on "Full House" when Stephanie and her band lip-synched to Ace of Base. Being 6 years old at the time, it took a while to realize that wasn't the actual band.

J Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:45 PM EST

Kate, it is "let's go to the mall......TODAY!" LOVES IT!!!

Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

The best ever was Sting on Ally McBeal, singing at the bar to Ally on her birthday. Even the plot - a man (Paul Rubens aka Pee Wee Herman) was suing Sting as Sting seduced his wife (Terri O'Sherri I think) as she attended a concert. She knew Sting was singing to her (not the other 40,000 people in attendence) and it was ruining her marriage. Sting settled for like $50k, as he did not have the heart to tell her that he was not singing just to her. Kills me even now.

RaMina Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:33 PM EST

i love the episode of south park when cartman is trying to find his dad, and chef sings the song about sex "when a man loves a woman, and a woman loves a man. well sometimes he doesn't really love the woman but he says he does..." and so on.

Kate Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:31 PM EST

That was an awesome one, Aaron! "Let's Go To The Mall!"

Aaron Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:30 PM EST

What about Robin Sparkles on How I Met Your Mother

Meredith Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:23 PM EST

Golden Girls!!

Dorothy and Sophia dressed as Sunny and Cher singing "I've Got You Babe" and the girls singing their 'original' "Miami" song!

AD Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

Thanks, I now have watched day man about 8 times at my computer, laughing hysterically and embarassing myself in front of my coworkers. Sooo funny.

Working Girl Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

Another "Arrested Development" classic musical moment: GOB and Franklin (It's not easy being whiiiiiiite...)

Ceballos Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

Good call Stephanie T! I also, LOVE "Apache" on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Will and Carlton have to win that dance contest.

It's actually on my myspace (i can't believe i forgot to mention it earlier)

Ceballos Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

The most recent one is Andy singing "Take a chance on me" on "The Office"

I also LOVE Kelsey Grammer butchering "Buttons and Bows" during the leap year episode of "Frasier". Classic stuff.

Rakeem Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

Okay...I'm back for a third time (I watch alot of tv) and I just realized that I forgot to mention Saved By the Bell! Any epsidoe where they sang one of those cheesy, catchy, totally '90s songs is great. I especially like the episode where the girls made that video, it's the one where Jesse is poppin' pills like M&Ms (I think it's called "Jesse's Song")! Here's another youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo2E6nkF2Oo

Miriam Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

On the West Wing, when CJ lip syncs "The Jackal"

Chris Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

Ross, playing "Celebration" on the bagpipes on "Friends". I've probably watched it 100 times and it's still hilarious. "EEEEE-EEEEE! EEEEE!" Gotta love Pheobe's singing.

Laurie Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

I need more cowbell!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:53 PM EST

I don't know if you guys have seen this, but there is this great commercial with "In the Air Tonight" which is much funnier than the Carpoolers promo. Copy and paste this link:

Stephanie T. Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Jump On It- Fresh Prince of Bell Air

Rakeem Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

I just realized the writer already mentioned the Cosby episode I talked about (tried it on youtube and got nothing...it depressed me too), but I also like the sleep over episode when the little boy sing's "Eye of the Tiger", it was so cute!

Stephanie T. Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Oh no. I totally forgot "Zit Remedy"-Degrassi old school, Downtown Sasquatch, and PMS- Degrassi TNG, and Merv and the Mystery Meat from Welcome Freshman.

Rakeem Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

Okay...easy:
1. "Smelly Cat" - Friends
2. "Baby Love" - My Wife & Kids the epsiode where Junior proposes to Vanessa (It' on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKnHSrM0VSI).
3. "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going (Lip Synch)" - The Fresh Prince...I know alot of people who were introduced to the song from this episode.
4."Pee on You" - Chappelle's Show
5."Burn" - The Boondocks (Season 2, Ep. 2)
6. "(Night Time Is) The Right Time" - The Cosby Show, Rudy lip-synch's it for her grandparent's anniversary.

Alison Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:41 PM EST

The Zack Attack on saved by the bell...
I LOVED "Did we ever have a chance"

pound for pound Scrubs has the most musical comedy...from Ted's accapella group singing TV themes (Charles in charge) and then commercials (By mennon)....my favorite was Ted and Carla sining "Talk Dirty to me" for a patient

The X-Files epiosode Bad Blood when Mulder sings Shaft is classic... "I.Did.Not."

Stephanie T. Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

I forgot the titie of the song but there is an episode of Flight of the Conchords where Bret is singing about a girl that he thinks is hot. Bret then asks for a Casio guitar from 1983 and then everything becoems animated. "you make me wanna boom-boom". I was on the floor laughing.

I also have to mention SNL's Horatio Sanz, and company singing different lyrics to the same melody, Gilda Radnor's sort of Patti Smith impersonation,Rick Moranis trying to sing The Police's Do,do,do,da,da,da, and pretty much every video parody on In Living Color, especially The MC Hammer Parody where Tommy Davidson gets his head stuck in his parachute pants.

Margaret Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

The entire "Air Band" episode of Scrubs was stellar, highlighted by Turk's spot-on Bel Biv DeVoe lip synch.

Gotta say, "Guy Love" sticks out in my mind from Scrubs, but a first season "West Side Story" parody is my all time favorite ("A surgeon and a doc, aboooooove...iiiiiit....aaaaaaall!")

I also loved Andy's serenade of Angela on last week's "The Office." I think Here Comes Treble should release an album.

Afternoon Delight - Arrested Development: laugh my butt off just thinking about it.
Convoy - My Name is Earl: funny, I was in the car today stuck behind some trucks and this song and scene popped into my head
Recently, on Carpoolers, they sang Come on Eileen. I could not stop laughing. Not sure about the rest of the show, but the musical sing-a-longs in the car are hilarious.

carr Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

I love the cosby show musical moments. I gotta say, the psyc and the carpoolers clips had me laughing.

moohi Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

the robot song from flight of the conchords
'the humans are dead
the humans are de-ad
we used poisonous gases
and we poisoned their asses
actually their lungs'
classic

Any time Stephen Colbert is given the chance to sing is a good thing. Whether it be as teacher Chuck Noblet on Strangers With Candy, belting out 'Carry On My Wayward Son' and singing 'The King of Glory Comes' after getting sucked into a cult, or on the Colbert Report, serenading Charlene during Valentine's Day or Singing in Korean, I can't get enough of him.

"Once More With Feeling" - The Buffy musical...bar none!

vicky Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

this is easy. Jesse on Full House singing "Forever" with the rippers at his wedding to Rebecca. awesome.

Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

the musical episode of buffy was great. also, anytime a barry white song starts on ally mcbeal especially if dancing in the bathroom is involved. but my favourite has to be 'let's go to the mall' from how i met your mother .. i kept singing that song for days.

Miri Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

On Angel, The first time Lorne "reads" Angel and he sings Mandy. Classic.

Lori Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

The whole Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Once More With Feeling". Great performances, great episode and the whole thing pushed everyone's storylines forward. Each song was important....okay, maybe not Dawn's but everyone else's.

Brent Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

On The Office, when Andy sang "Rainbow Connection" to Pam, even throwing in some Pig Latin to the chorus.
"Some day we'll find it
The AinbowRay OnnectionCay..."

Kari Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

Another Cheers moment - when Lilith sings My Funny Valentine during a trip where they're trying to "rough it." I'm not doing it justice, but it makes tears roll down my face just thinking about that scene.

Todd Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

I definitely think I like it better when they sing "Day Man" in Charlie's apartment, mostly because it was so new and absurd the first time they did it. Just watching them come up with "master of karate and friendship" is so perfect. My friend Scott was pretty much singing "Night Man" to me all weekend too. Pretty brilliant.

Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

I really liked Hamlet the Musical when they did it on Gilligan's Island. "Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
Do not forget stay out of debt.
Think twice and take this good advice from me -
Guard thine own sovereigncy
There's just one other thing you ought to do
To thine own self be true!"

mkw Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

"Let's Go To The Mall", by Robin Sparkles (How I Met Your Mother). Great song, from a great episode.

Auriana Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

I loved both of the musical episodes of Hercules and Xena. Cheesy? Yes. But bloody great.

Elizabeth Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Love fool on The Office. Or, Jordan Catalano singing I Want to Be Sedated on My So Called Life. Classic hottie.

Ron Mwangaguhunga Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

Doobie Brothers sing "Black Water" on "What's Happening" (the episode when Mr. Dunbar forced them to tape their concert and the tape recorder fell out of Rerun's trench coat?

annie Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

This doesn't exactly qualify, but the mention of Arrested Development brought it to mind:

"Somewhere over the rainbow/there's another rainbow."

Also, Scrubs. In general, almost every episode involves some fun musical moment. I especially love Ted's band.

Tamara Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

Veronica Mars singing "One Way Or Another" at the karaoke cafe in the Clash of the Tritons ep of S1.

Minutiae Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:16 PM EST

My favorite TV musical moment is from My Name Is Earl, in the episode "Made a Lady Think I Was God." It's Earl, Randy, and Joy crouched behind a bush singing "Convoy," and it is absolutely hilarious.

Aaron Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

Any rendition of "Afternoon Delight" with a relative on "Arrested Development"

wraith808 Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

Another chiming in for the Once again with Feeling episode of Buffy. The talent wasn't even, but man, it was hilarious and fun to sing. And Giles and Tara were *really* excellent.

Katy Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

I loved whenever the Cosby's sang for their grandparent's anniversary.
And on Ed when he did the video with the blow up guitar for Carol. And when Mike sang "Tonight, I celebrate my love to you" for a $10 bet.

Ames Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

On Cheers, Rebecca tries to seduce Sam by singing "We've got tonight" by Bob Seger. Then she says 'get ready for the best night of your life' and passes out on top of him.
Also, on Knights of Prosperity when they decided Modern Day Tom Saywer was going to be their theme song.

Marion Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Andy (Ed Helms) singing "Take a Chance on Me" to Angela (Angela Kinsey) on The Office. It may be recent, but it was a classic! I loved his a-capella friends on speaker phone: "What'd she say?!"

kerry Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

I always got a kick out of the episode of Friends where Phoebe and Chandler sang Endless Love together after Chandler broke up with Janice.

Sheri Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 02:53 PM EST

Flight of the Conchords

coltsfan Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

When both Righteous Brothers sang to Kirstie Alley on "Cheers" on 2 separate occasions. Bill Medley did You Lost That Lovin' Feeling and Bobby Hatfield (the other RB) did Unchained Melody.

Yeaaahhh! Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

I completly agree with Stephen the Buffy episode once more with feeling was great it was awsome and a hell of alot better than viva Lauglin (check out the Wolverine movie get a release date blog on the next page and you can read my argument with a bunch of people who thing Huge Jackman is the best singer on the last 100 years

Cece Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

Ally McBeal with Peter MacNichol's character using Barry White as his theme music.

Saved by the Bell and them singing Wild Thing before Zach crashes the car after a night of drinking.

Stephen Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

The entire musical ep of Buffy, mainly because it was from that show
