Is it possible I prefer Celine Dion's new single to Mary J Blige's?

Oct 5, 2007, 04:59 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

Who am I? What do I believe in? And has my soul become possessed by an adult-contemporary demon? Because, the thing is, I just listened to the new Mary J. Blige single, "Just Fine," and I do not get it. I do not get it at all. Maybe it's the dated hand-claps that sounded better on Lumidee back in 2003. Maybe it's the absence of a strong melody (so crucial for keeping Mary J's vocals on point). Maybe I just prefer a heartbroken MJB fighting against the odds. Or maybe it's because the lyrics here sound like they were torn from Dr. Phil's seventh-grade notebook. "No time for mopin' around, are you kiddin'?/ Ain't no time for negative vibes, 'cause I'm winnin." I know Mary don't need no hateration, holleration in this dancerie, but, seriously? Ugh!

Meanwhile, Celine Dion's latest, "Taking Chances," is actually — how do I put this? — pretty good! The funny thing is, in spite of all her success on the pop charts, Dion has become synonymous with uncool in recent years. In defense of the Hipness Police, Dion did team up with Anne Geddes on 2004's Miracle, and spent several years performing inside a humidified bubble on the Las Vegas stage. But "Taking Chances" reveals a more restrained side of Dion. I've listened to the track three times now, and not once was I able to conjure up a vision of the singer histrionically beating her chest during the chorus. True, I also couldn't conjure up a vision of the song landing on my iPod, but it beats the crap out of the inferior "Just Fine." There, I said it!

What do you think, PopWatchers? Give both tracks a listen and tell me if I'm right, or if I'll be spending time dangling over the fiery pit of musical hell.

Ughh...Scary J. Blige? Why is she famous again? For her sh*tty songs to cover up the fact that she is off- key? Or the fact that she ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS sings FLAT-and she ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS screams like shes being skinned alive?

I don't understand how you can compare the two songs. They are in two different arenas. Celine has an awesome voice. I am a HUGE MJB fan. I like her soul and spirit and I've seen her in concert and she sounds pretty good-and her performances are off the charts! "Just Fine" is motivational and I Love It! And Celines!

RK Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

JANE DOE...THANK YOU!

Mary is the 'queen' for a reason. her Fans get her and who is Michael Slezak?

Julien Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 09:02 PM EST

Mary's song is W.A.C.K
Celine Dion would wipe the floor with her any day. Poor animals are always being killed when Mary hits those awful cat notes.

BigPoppa Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

I like Celine, but she brings nothing to her version of "Alone" and actually makes me wished I was listening to the original. Sorry but she just is not feeling it the way Heart did.

chris Sat, Oct 27, 2007 at 07:52 PM EST

how sad for someone- Jane Doe- Jane Dope more like- to resort to intellectualy lacking coments like ' only rednecked faggots like celine'. Prejudiced people wouldnt be welcome in Celines fan base anyway!
And taking chances is amazing!!!

CARL Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 06:49 AM EST

Dions new is really good. I think Kara DioGuardi and Dave Stewart have written a classic with Taking chances. It's going to be a huge hit song for Celine.

Joe Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 12:46 AM EST

Celine dion's new single is her best, you can tell she is really putting her heart in soul into that song, she is finally out of the restraints the studio put her in, now she chooses her own work CELINE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marcus Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 06:16 AM EST

I love Celines new song Taking chances. It is a good thing she has teamed up with Eurythmics Dave Stewart and Kara DioGuardi. This seems to be a fresh new start for Celine and I hope she is going on a tour soon.

Jane Doe Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 02:11 AM EST

Mary rocks, Celine sucks!

J'adore Celine!! Elle est magnifique avec une voix d'ange. La chanson - AMAZING

Anise Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

Well said coco!!!!!!!!!!
I also think Celine is awesome in whatever she does. She'a a great singer with a great personality and character.

coco Thu, Oct 11, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Celine's voice is awesome. I actually heard the interview with Kara where she says how she chose Celine to sing that song. Who wouldn't? When Celine sings your song, it will be heard in the smallest corner of the world. I bet you a lot of people haven't heard about that writer before now. This album wil do wel just like any Celine album. Cause her fanbase is already established. Her fans are just waiting for that day Nov 13th and they will go pick up the album. She doesn't need to look for publicity like other artists and actors, like going to every event to be seen or every show. She will be one big shows like Today and Oprah and her album will do just fine. This girl have a lot of fans, more fans than haters for sure. 185 millions albums sold, not counting French work from 1981-1987. Go figure. She's a class act.

I don't really care about MBJ so I won't get the album, wheither it's good or not.

Katya Thu, Oct 11, 2007 at 02:59 AM EST

Celine's is the best song!!! it's really catchy

Kimmy Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Didn't really like "JUst fine". The pop rock "Taking chances" wins. Way to go Celine!!!!!!!! Love it

Bella Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

I would pick Celine, it's an awesome song!!!!

lyn Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

I feel like Mary J's song is trying very hard to be something.. but just doesn't make it somehow, it sounds used even, to an extent, and yet Celine's is easy, it doesn't try, and simply is soothing, listenable and catchy.

Carol Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

Definitely Celine's, it's her best song in years. Love the edginess, it'll take everyone by surprise!

Al Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 08:53 PM EST

Celine, all the way! What a great song. I'm very surprised to hear this kind of song from her. Will definately buy her new album on Nov. 13.

JEDERSON Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

I prefer the Celine's new single, the song is sooooooo good!!!

Nia Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

Phil, Erin Grace is Kara DioGuardi. Kara did the vocals on both albums--and both times she was better than Celine.

Mary wins, anyway.

Bryan Beavers Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 10:09 AM EST

I love Mary J and I loved her last album but this new single doesn't do it for me. It has a been there, done that vibe... Celine's new single, on the other hand, is different from anything I've heard from her before. Bravo Celine!

Bob Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 05:08 AM EST

Jeezz! Celine's voice sounds great in this song - she's simply fab!!! She shouls take more chances lol

Anna Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 05:05 AM EST

After listening to both songs, I must say DEFINITELY Celine's taking chances. Mary J's is OK but not to listen to it everyday. On the contrary I've already listened to celine's 5 times and I'm not a HUGE fan but I love her voice.

Kitty Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 03:17 AM EST

I like Mary, but this song is annoying. :S Celine on the other hand is effin' fabulous! Definetly buying her new album!

Fool Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 03:07 AM EST

Please don't shoot me, but I think Mary J's song is actually rather nice... Celine's Taking Chances would beat her any day though!

suprise suprise Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 03:04 AM EST

I def pick Celine. I love the song, she sounds different and is really taking chances with this album.
ya all should go to youtube and search for her "in-studio/recording taking chances" videos. a m a z i n g.

FYI - Celine didn't steal "Taking Chances"..lol..Kara offered the song to her and she also produced another track called "Suprise Suprise" and forced Celine to sound like her;)
hah..

Tailar Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 10:37 PM EST

Celine's new song is great.I just love it!!

Ryan Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

I like both Mary and Celine. Honestly, I expected a lot more from Mary's new single. It's a nice, upbeat tune but it's not as memorable or catchy as a lot of her other stuff, like "Family Affair." I'm really feeling Celine's new song though... It has an edginess to it that I would never have expected from her. So I choose Celine as well.

Hot Stuff Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

WOW, I'm not the biggest Celine fan but her song is excellent! I don't really understand all the negative comments about her though... Not her fault if radios kept playing the Titanic song 24 hours a day! She's got the voice and you have to admit that she's not a bad role model like Britney, etc. If Celine took drugs and drove under the influence, Taking Chances would probably be at the Top of the charts in a heartbeat... Too bad POP radios reward bad role models. I'm still overwhelmed by this new Celine sound!

Bruno Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

Celine is the best. I love all her songs.

Sam Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 05:37 PM EST

agreeed! Celine sounds amazing I cant stop listening to this songg its mad addicting

Brad Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

I love Celine's Taking Chances. She sounds so different.

Bluestar Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 04:39 PM EST

I love Celine Dion's new song.
I like Mary J too. But nobody can be compared to Celine Dion. I mean she's on the scene from almost 25 years now, she has won everything a person could won, she's the best selling female artist of all time, her voice is not even compareable to someone else voice.
People that talks bad about her just don't know her music, They know 3-4 songs and think that all the 20 albums she's done sounds the same. This mean to have prejudices. Before judging someone at least you have to know what you're talking about!

rick Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

I totally agree with Micheal. Mary's song is absolutely boring. I love Celine's song even if i'm not a fan! What a nice new sound!

Martin Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

I just love Celine's new sound. Its fresh, light and fun. She never sounded that good!

Taking Chances rocks!

Stevo Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

Kara DioGuardi gave the song to Celine to sing so she hardly STOLE it. She's also producing the song Surprise, surprise on Celine's new album. Taking Chances is the best Celine song in years. MJB sounds deranged in this song- she's usually great but I just don't get it

Davey Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 03:36 PM EST

Blige's song sounds like a Janet Jackson reaction and dated! bleh! I get it... you're just fine! But this song it just not it!

I really like Celine's new song! It had a great fresh sound to it! I definatly go for Taking Chances! And for those who complain about the 'cover' from Platinum Weird...Dave Stewart produced the song for Celine, so why the complaint? He didn't have a problem with it! I heard he'll even be in the video clip!

Erika Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

I'd definitely go with Celine song. It's absolutely amazing! MJB's song is a little irritating to listen to...

Manuel Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

Definately Céline. I hope this brings her back where she belongs: TO THE TOP!

Willemijn Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 01:27 PM EST

Céline's new song is AMAZING! She's definitely backkk

Longen Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

Celine's new song is so good!

tk Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

The thing with Mary is she really CAN'T sing, but she has a distinctive voice that lends it self to only a certain type of music, that being said, this is NOT her type of music. When I first heard it I said it sounded like something Justin Timberlake would be singing. My sis thinks she sounded like some old Micheael Jackson. Definately not Mary, I hope this isn't what her album will sound like cause if it is, Mariah WILL mop up the floor with her....I always like me a little cheesy Celine...

graeme Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 09:21 AM EST

Yeah, that Celine track is fantastic.

Amber Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

Mary's song stinks...Slezak is right, it doesn't have a catchy melody.
I really like the Celine song, glad she's back!

Martha Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

Slezak, here's your dilemma: Celine's new song is pretty good and easy on the cheesy histrionics (though her hair seems to be taking over her body), while fun and up-tempo is not Mary J's forte. It's OK...don't go having an identity crisis just because of a temporary switch.

Brainiac Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

David Foster has worked extensively with Celine Dion. He is very discerning about who (or whom?) he works with. I don't think he'd give Mary J. Blige the time of day. Mary's voice is wobbly and pitchy at best.

Although this isn't my favorite Celine song, it's still pretty good. She is technically a very good singer. You don't become one of the best-selling female artists of all time - using your voice alone - without knowing how to carry a tune.

Tommy Marx Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 12:25 AM EST

Liked both songs. I'm glad that Mary Blige is releasing another uptempo song (and there's nothing wrong with a fun song). I'm also glad Celine Dion is holding back the histrionics (although it must not bother me that much, since I own every CD she's released, LOL).

Joe C Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 11:46 PM EST

I actually like both songs. I've never been a Celine fan; I've always put her in that Whitney/Christina Aguilera class; great singer, boring material, but this song is actually good.

As for Mary J, I like the song a lot Very catchy. I would like to hear both of these songs on the radio.
Still, Michael, it's hard to compare the two; they're such disparate styles. I agree with an earlier post; Celine can be compared with Kelly Clarkson, while Mary is hip-hop/R&B. It's like comparing apples to artichokes.

Phil Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

And as for MJB's "JUST FINE"...that pretty much sums it up. BUT THATS JUST FINE! I'm just happy we've got a ful album coming in GROWING PAINS. And "JUST FINE" is already an uptempo nod to the disco-era, so I'm sure the club remixes will be a hands-in-the-air-great-night-out song. I still think that Mary's "BE WITHOUT YOU" Moto Blanco Vocal Club mix is the last true club ANTHEM to be released, and that was 2 years ago!

Phil Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 06:17 PM EST

Ok Ok Ok, a bit of history is in order here. For those fans crying that Celine's "Taking Chances" is a remake, barely anyone knows what you're talking about unless you're a music tastemaker & WITH GOOD REASON. Yes, Kara DioGuardi DID write and SING the original for her group Platinum Weird with Dave Stewart, BUT other than being "quietly" released on iTunes, the song was never released or promoted & AGAIN WITH GOOD REASON. When Interscope released Platinum Weird's "debut" cd in 2006, Kara's vocals & songs WERE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND ON THE DISC. A new vocalist, Erin Grace sings on the project, which is supposed to be a "lost album" by a forgotten super-group from the 70's. There is a FULL disc of Platinum Weird songs with Kara singing, which sound SO much better, but it was ONLY released as a Best Buy exclusive & both discs were packed & sold together as one cd. Since all of like 5 people know this, I'm sure Kara is happy that Celine is turning the song into a hit for the masses.

bandith Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 06:14 PM EST

I love Celine Dion. I do, bite me. But I don't understand why she's covering a song that has come out earlier this year, from someone who has already done it so brilliantly. I don't see the logic in there at all. Doesn't she have a pool of people who could write her new songs?

Jazlow Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 05:41 PM EST

Both songs are horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Elizabeth Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

This is ridiculous. Celine Dion STOLE Platinum Weird's song "Taking Chances." I would MAYBE think differently if there was something original about her version but there's nothing. The music is the same and she's forcing her voice to sound like Kara DioGuardi (lead singer for Platinum Weird) and she can't; she sounds like she's dying. Literally, there's no comparison. DOWNLOAD PLATINUM WEIRD'S VERSION RIGHT NOW!!! You'll see what I mean.

mscisluv Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Someone else said that Mary J's song sounds like a Janet Jackson-reject, adn I think that's dead on actually. It definitely sounds like a Janet song (not that Janet is a good singer in comparison to anyone). That being said, it is fun, but it's not impressive and I don't think it will be a hit.

I loved the Celine song...

to Brainiac Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

The backlash probably is related to the Titanic song that wa splayed ad nauseum in '97-'98

Marcus Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Brainiac- Putting Celine and Mary in the same sentence is INSULTING? Give me a break. Really, Celine has a great voice, but she is hardly the female musician to end all female musicians. And Mary isn't Britney Spears or Christina Milian. And last time I checked, earning power does not equal talent. Your comment was hyperbole at its worst.

The Angst Covers Missed Notes Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 10:51 AM EST

I have to agree with Slezak on this one. MJB needs the melodrama to cover the fact that she is dark-side-of-the-moon-far from pitch perfect. This song shows the weakness of her voice. Celine, on the other hand, is learning that she doesn't have to indulge in histronics to be compelling, which is a very nice change for her.

Brainiac Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 10:36 AM EST

Celine Dion is one of the most successful - and talented - female recording artists of all time. Comparing her to Mary J is insulting on its own.

I have never understood the backlash against Celine. Her voice is awesome! Oh, well, enough peole like her - according to Forbes, she earned $45 million last year. I am not sure what Mary J earned, as she didn't make the "100 Most Powerful Celebrities" list, but I doubt it's even close.

Steven Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 10:20 AM EST

I've been listening to this song all week and loving it. I had NO idea it was Celine Dion.

Rick Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

Look I like both ladies just fine..but Britneys song "Gimmie More" is more fun.Celine's voice is not as appealing on "Taking Chances"maybe its the range or key that its sung.Mary"s song is fun but fluff. What I really want to hear is that"Grown Woman" song they played at the end of the Entourage episode she was on..now that song was hot

Raven_Moon Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 12:50 AM EST

I have to agree with you, Slezak. Celine's is most definitely better.

ChrisChicago Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 10:31 PM EST

Slezak, I love you. I really do. I'd propose if you weren't already married. But I have to disagree this time...MJB has Celine beat this time. 1st, Celine's is a remake, and I'd take original over remade anyday. Second, MJB's has a great upbeat tempo that is really catchy. She just gets better with time, and this is a true example of this. Vocals are on point, and she does a great job. Even better on the second listen. Usually right there with you, but sorry, not this time.

BrandonK Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:50 PM EST

I love Celine...her voice is so fantastic! She may be a bit dorky, but I think it comes across as sincere. I saw her in Vegas and she really seemed to be enjoying herself and the interaction with the audience.

??? Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:12 PM EST

Ummm... so did you hit your head?? Bad call - MJB's is better.

Hey Cece Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:12 PM EST

why all the Celine hate? You can't say 'off-key' when you speak of this woman. Heck, I'm not crazy about her either but the gal NEVER, and I mean NEVER goes off-key! Get yer ears in tune girl!!!

Cece Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 08:54 PM EST

All right, Slezak. The gauntlet's been thrown down. How DARE you besmurch the genius that is MJB? Her song is far better than Celine's? I mean, what was up with that whispery, off-key thing she was doing? It was more annoying than anything. Mary's song is upbeat and positive. I know that's a lot to take in for you fair-weather Mary lovers. Not everyone can handle a happy Mary. True fans, like myself, know that a happy Mary can turn a song just as well as a sad Mary. Slezak, I'm going to be like your mom now: I'm not mad at you, just disappointed.

Twain Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 08:47 PM EST

Completely right. Celine's song is very good. My wife, when first listening to it said "Is that Kelly Clarkson?" Which is a sign that the song has a younger rhythm that you would expect from CD.
Sometimes, you should just ignore who the artist is and listen. I've put away my anti-Celine prejudice -- at least for this song. No way you'll catch me singing the Titanic theme.

Snarf Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

I wouldn't say Dion is synonomous with "uncool" so much as she is with "cheese".

bootsycolumbia Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 07:16 PM EST

This is the first English language Celine song I can say I really like. I love how it shows off her incredible range and she sings it with a lot of emotion. The Mary song is good, but it's not vintage Mary. I vote for Celine (and being a Montrealer, I never thought I'd ever say that!).

Rakeem Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

Okay, so she doesn't annoy me, but sometimes she makes me go ugh! Her song is actually really good as well, but I probably wouldn't buy it.

Rakeem Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

Mary! I love Mary but I'm usually a Mariah fanatic, but this song is fire! I love the retro feel of this song. I also like Celine, but at the same time she annoy's the hell outta me...does that make sense?

Dolores Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 06:28 PM EST

Celine's takes the cake. Heffa can blow with her voice. Amazing song.

jason Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

some answers:
1) that stupid "you're listening to" voice comes over so you can't copy the song or trade it or whatever the kids do now
2) yeah the celine song is already being used for some show on cbs, i don't remember which one.
that said, i like both for different reasons. i like mary's BECAUSE of the retro feel. it's fun and not full of drama like mary usually does. big hit? maybe not, but oh well. i like celine's song too. it's not overblown and diva-ish. it's just a good pop-message song. i like the picture too, very "hair-raising"? so the worng word, but oh well. i do hear celine does a freakin' awesome cover of heart's "alone" on the new CD though, and i love that song. i'll be buying both cd's i'm sure. michael, you should do a snap judgement for natasha bedingfield's new song"love like this" with sean kingston. now THAT is gonna be huge. later

stephen Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

I like both, but am willing to bet my life Celine's song is the new "Suddenly I See" and will be used in every preview for romantic comedies.

stephen Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

who is that in that picture, and what has she done with celine?

stephen Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

Did anyone else have an obnoxious voice interject "you are now listening to..." throughout Mary J's song? Or did I do something wrong?

eliz.s. Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

Love the Eurythmics allusion/stolen words in the lyrics of Celine's song. It sounds like a country-pop ballad, but I think Celine carries it off well. I wouldn't buy it, but if I heard it on the radio, I might not change the channel.

BrandonP Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:35 PM EST

I'm with Slezak. Mary's might grow on me but it is not impressive on first listen. Celine's, on the other hand, made me repeat several times. Easily one of the best she's recorded.

? Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

PoliB: That is one sad statement you have just made, because Janet Jackson is a mediocre singer at best. At least Mary J Blige can sing, too bad the song is awful.

Jason Bonkers Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

Celine is a good singer and so is Mary, but both songs stink! I would not purchase either one of these disasters in the making.

PoliB Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

I'd rather pick neither, but if you had my head in a vice I'd have to say Celine. Mary J's sounds like a Janet Jackson reject (circa "All for You")

Fatima Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

I still pick Mary. To me, if it sounds dated at all, it is like an 80's R&B throwback. And I find that a good thing. Shouldn't be the lead single, won't be a huge hit, but I'll listen to anything Mary sings.
