Casting call for the new Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara

Oct 19, 2007, 05:04 PM | by Thom Geier

Categories: Books, Film

Wind_l We guess tomorrow really is another day. Next month, St. Martin's Press plans to publish a prequel to Gone With the Wind that's fully authorized by the Margaret Mitchell estate. This is only the second official spinoff of GWTW, following Alexandra Ripley's widely castigated 1992 novel Scarlett. And this one is all about Rhett — or, as the title says, Rhett Butler's People. Donald McCaig, who wrote the Civil War novel Jacob's Ladder, has supposedly been toiling on it for 12 years.

But the new book got us to wondering about the inevitable film adaptation — or, as was the case with Scarlett, the TV miniseries. (By the way, that one featured Timothy Dalton as Rhett and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, as she was then known, in the title role.) Which contemporary actors would you cast as America's ultimate star-crossed lovers, Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara? The poll lines are open...

I see George Clooney as Rhett, as I've heard many people in agreement... For Scarlett, that's a hard one... to find an actress with the right age, coloring (hair, eyes, etc.) and attitude, but for now I'll go with Megan Fox, although she has blue eyes and is young, she has the attitude. Ive heard Jude Law for Ashley, but I say Ryan Gosseling. For Melanie, either Rachel McAdams (she and Gosseling have so much chemistry onscreen)or Emmy Rossum, remember, Melly was sweet and soft-spoken, a lady. Now, for Mammy, I was thinking Whoopie Goldberg. Haha, since they're look - alikes, Angelina could play Scarlett's mother.

Looking for the TV miniseries of "Scarlett OHara" that show Scarlett in Ireland where she bought an old mansion and fixed it up. She was delivering her baby on a table. All of our electric went down because of the hurricane in 2008. Didn't see the rest of show. Will it run again on TV?

no one is like vivein leigh but if i had to pick it would be nicole kidman

ok the best actor to play a second scarlet is too old now and she was a young delta burke. as far as rett i think timothy dalton was a great choice. seriously lets just leave my favorite movie of all time alone. the books i like but another movie destroys my image of vivian and clark so lets just move on from the classics please

Shannon Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

I agree with Stephanie. The first time I read Rhett Butler's People (I have since read it several more times) Clooney and Judd came to mind instantly. Clooney has proven himself able in soooo many films and southern is not a far stretch at all (ref. Oh, Brother, Where Art thou?) and Judd IS southern for crying out loud in the first place and beautiful and a great actress to boot. But what do we the fans know - Hollywood will do what they want anyway, I just hope they give it serious thought.

sofía Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Reese Witherspoon and George Clooney
but I think never gonna be a equal Rhett!
I just love Rhett Clarck gable was in deed
Rhett!
that girl did a good job with jhonny and june
I was impressed comparing that movie with
legally blonde tha's a huge change.
You people have to remember that Scarlett was
youger than rhett!
This movie will have to be perfect because is really hard
comparing with the firsth GWTG really difficult
do it right. Almost is a cinematograph suicide but worth it try!

Elin Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

I think this book COULD be adapted for perhaps and HBO mini-series. That way it would be quality without all the hype to bring it down in the box-office, because you know that even if the movie was flawless, there would still be some die hard fans that wouldn't accept it and it would get horrible reviews...as far as casting goes, I've given this a lot of thought and I think Johnny Depp would be a perfect Rhett Butler. He's "swarthy" as the author puts it, but also extremely gentleman-ly. And he could do the age range that Rhett would need to be. Perfect, I say. As far as Scarlett goes, I definately think an unknow would need to be found. Even though she has an important part, her character can't afford to upstage Rhett as in GWTW, so an unknown could play her with class and let Rhett shine!

Micaela Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

I think this girl called ashley that cllaims to be perfecto for the role ofd scarlett is as stupid as someone can be. Besides, scarlett wasnt that greedy, or that racist, you fool! and leave jewishs alone! (and i´m not saying this because I´m jewish, because actually Im not). the problem with you ashley, is that rhett butler wont even look at you twice. You seem to have Suellens selfish and stupid personality. Its not only about looking like scarlett you know?. So rhett butler will probably laught at you. Scarlett ohara could be selfish but eventually she grew up and learn how to take care of herserlf and others, and that the important part about that character, not the selfish little greedy girl at the begining of the novel, but the determined strong woman who learned her lesson at the end. And you seem to have a lot to learn. And she had the guts to doit, wich i doubt you have. So STFU U Nazy . Besides Vivien leight wasnt a southern bell, and she made a damn great Scarlett!

Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

Natalie Portman is my vote for Scarlett. After seeing her in The Other Boleyn Girl, I believe she would make the best Scarlett.

lutchie Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

Winona Rider will make good for Scarlett with Pierce Brosnan as Rhett; or Catherine Zeta Jones with Banderas.

Vicki Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 07:26 AM EST

Why would anyone in this day and age even dare make a remake of GWTW as horrible as Hollywood's acting and directing is today? The only person in Hellwood who would do a decent job with a GWTW remake is Mel Gibson and they've completely destroyed him.
I have been a GWTW fan for over thirty years since I first read the book at 15, and I have seen LOTS of movies try and mimic it's excellence. Sorry, never has nor will it ever happen again.

Mack Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

I don't want to sound incredibly snotty as two previous commentors have. But a Yankee should not get the role as Scarlett O'hara. That is pure sacrelige. However, if it has to be done (I personally think it should be left alone entirely), I believe Anne Hathaway would make the best Scarlett if she could master the Southern accent. Otherwise, please do not even consider it. Natalie Portman was simply horrible in Cold Mountain and I don't believe she is equipt for this role, either.

Leslie Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 04:09 AM EST

BTW...Rhett Butler's People is a prequel based book which lapses into Gone With The Wind and the author's own sequel only this time, the story is told from from Rhett's perspective.
It is not an actual remake of the original. However, I still say don't even dare touch it. Hollywood is getting burned dabbling with remakes, prequels and sequels these days. 2 words, Psycho 1998.

Leslie Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 03:59 AM EST

You people are effing idiots. I mean come on…Keira Knightley as Scarlett?? George Clooney as Rhett??
God help us!
I’m with the previous commenter, Ashley, bring in a newcomer who needs little rehearse in a Southern accent and doesn’t look like they’re 35 when playing a 16 year old.
And Natalie Portman as Scarlett? Scarlett’s eyes were blue green people! Duh! Natalie has brown eyes! Jewish Americans don’t normally have blue green eyes.. And let’s not forget that Portman is a Harvard graduate and Scarlett O’hara said specifically in the book that none of her children would ever go to Harvard because it was a Yankee school. So I doubt Portman would accept the role if it were offered to her anyway.
I say leave it alone entirely. Hollywood won’t take any smart advice and will muck it up like they do every other movie nowadays. No actors or actresses in Hollywood now could pull the roles of Rhett & Scarlett off.

elise Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

dont mess with a classic.

Ashley Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

Well, me of course. I'm from Georgia, grew up spoiled and rich on my grandparent's large plantation in Clayton county just like Scarlett O'hara, and I look just like her except I am much prettier and younger than Vivien Leigh when she was cast as Scarlett (26)...I am 20. And my family is distantly related to the Mitchell's.
I would hate to see Hollywood's stupid, politically correct butts use some wooden-acting Yankee trash like Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johansson (who are both Jewish btw), and don't have an ounce of Southern blood in their bodies and look like they're near 30 to portray Scarlett. The thought makes me writhe. But hey, you know that if someone like Spielberg directs the film, that's who will be cast without a doubt.
I say if anyone should take on the role as director of the film, It should be Sofia Coppola or Mel Gibson. As for the role of Scarlett O'hara, no one is better suited for it than me.

stella Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

Natalie Portman is my vote for Scarlett. She is beautiful and petite and can act.

Lisa Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

Actually, Scarlett was 16 at the beginning of GWTW and 28 at the end of the book. Rhett was 45 at the end of the book. After reading Rhett Butler's People it seems that the author was an observer to the original, but did not really understand the culture or the people. I have read GWTW about 8 times and Rhett Butler's Peole has them saying and doing things the original characters would never have done.

Sun, Mar 30, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

I think it would take and exact look a like of vivien and clark. and they'd have to be under 15. none of today's actors or actresses could do it

Sun, Mar 30, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

DON'T DO IT!!!!!! No one could live up to Clark Gable or Vivien Leigh! Leave history alone!

sarah Tue, Mar 18, 2008 at 04:26 AM EST

www.gwtwmusical.com has all the info for the new musical - and the cast.
William david Brohn is doing the orchestral arrangements and spills the beans on gwtw here http://www.stageandscreenonline.com/downloads/william_david_brohn.html

Jeanine Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

GWTW should NEVER be remade. Why would u ruin a classic!

Melissa Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

I would love it if they remade the movie. George Clooney as Rhett, Katie Holmes as Scarlett.

Melissa Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

I would love it if they remade the movie. George Clooney as Rhett, Katie Holmes as Scarlett.

meg Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

George Clooney would be the best Rhett Butler, Kira Knightley for Scarlet

ryheartsgwtw Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

i've actually thought about this before and i can't believe no one's said Angelina Jolie for Scarlett. She'd be perfect. And George Clooney would make a great Rhett. I've also thought of Kiera Knightly as Melanie and Matthew McCaugnahay as Ashley. Orlando Bloom might make a good younger Rhett. If you've read the book, you'll find that there are also a lot more roles to fill, so it could take a while. I really hope they make a movie though and make it better then the mediocre Scarlett. The casting in that movie sucked.

ilovegwtw!! Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Eric Bana -- Rhett
Jennifer Connelly as Scarlett

Chanell Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I think that Hugh Jackman would portray a great Rhett. As for Scarlett I have no ideas. Vivien Leigh did such an incredible job that I don't think there are any actresses today that could ever compare to her standards!

Tiffany Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

ADAM BRODY can play as young Rhett. It's perfect. Dark features and everything.

erika Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 07:41 PM EST

uh hello yes it is a pre-quel in the first part so no scarlett would not be ten in the book at all she is not in it until where gwtw started so if you guys would do oyu're research you would know that it is rhetts life before and after the war and he did a lot better job with this then they did with scarlett his sticks more to the original story. And george clooney is no rhett butler hello he was young in this not 50 patrick wilson is a good choice or find some unknown actor and yes i agree that ashley judd might pull off scarlett or like suggested above someone unknown. If they do a movie they had better do it right and not half assed, and dear god do NOT get some teeny bopper to play these classic roles.

Jill Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:39 PM EST

Rhett: George Clooney without a doubt. But why is everyone worrying about Scarlett's age? This is about RHETT - Scarlett probably will be introduced at the same age as in GWTW.
Scarlett: A newcomer.

Jim Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

I think by now we all know that the new book is not a 'traditional' prequel - it evidently contains passages from before, during and after the events of GWTW. So - there might need to be multiple actors playing Rhett and Scarlett - George Clooney would be fine for the older Rhett and J Rhys-Meyers great for the younger one. As for Scarlett - let's do what the original did - cast a fabulous unknown.

Kristen Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 11:03 PM EST

Rhett: George Clooney
Scarlett: Rachel McAdams

chimp Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

Rhett: Justin Chambers

Scarlett: Michelle Monaghan

chimp Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

Rhett: Justin Chambers

Scarlett: Michelle Monaghan

CJ Mon, Oct 29, 2007 at 04:07 AM EST

It has been my understanding that the book isn't a prequel but a requel - a retelling of the GWTW story from Rhett's viewpoint. First, it's too bad the Mitchell estate has to do this as nothing is as good as the original book/film and nothing that will be done now will EVER replace that. There is only one Rhett and Scarlett and that is Gable and Leigh. If I had to pick though - I would pick Pierce Brosnan and Ashley Judd.

Jello Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

Alicia Minshew and Thorsten Kaye

Silv Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

Continuing, not that I believe such a movie should be made. You know Hollywood is hardup for scripts when they're considering re-making classics that should remain untouched. Not a surprise after reviewing this summer's offerings. And what is wrong with the Mitchell relatives? I absolutely refused to read that nonsense "Scarlett" by Alexandra Ripley that was supposed to be the sequel, or to watch the movie.

Silv Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

Only a handful of you seem to get it - Scarlett was about 19 in the first scenes of GWTW and Rhett was in his early 30s. Therefore a prequel would have to have a YOUNGER actor than so many of those mentioned here, like under 25! And Scarlett would have to be a child if at all in the storyline, which would really be beside the point. Perhaps Josh Hartnett, Shia LeBeouf, Emil Hirsch?

Stephen Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 10:31 AM EST

I love this idea! They should then remake Casablanca with Dane Cook and J.Lo! Then once that draws the crowds, make a sequel to Citizen Kane. Don't know how they'll do that, but it can be done!

michelle Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

It's almost sacriligious to think about casting the younger Rhett and Scarlett! Who thinks of these things, and why would anyone be interested? This is one time when a classic should be left alone, since the Scarlett miniseries was such a bomb.

Sina Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 09:21 AM EST

Clive Owen, Daniel Craig, NOT George Clooney. I don't want to see Rhett hamming it up to the camera with inside jokes only he and Scarlett knows.

Lee Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 09:10 AM EST

Maggie Gyllenhall? We're casting Scarlett here, not the Incredible Hulk.

Hamburger Royal Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 04:47 AM EST

There are a handful of movie roles that for various reasons (and not only because of a powerful performance of the respective actors)should NEVER be reprised, ever. Not even in jest. Rhett and Scarlett (Clark Gable/Vivian Leigh), old Hitler (Bruno Ganz), That-Dude-On-The-Boat (Leonardo DiCaprio), Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) and the young Empress Elizabeth (Romy Schneider) are among them. So don't try. It would only end in cheese.

Amanda Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 02:50 AM EST

I would just like to say that I'm an avid reader and I love the GWTW movie, but I could never get through the book. Also, I actually really enjoyed the 1992 Scarlet sequel.

angela Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

Scarlett Johanson or Elizabeth Banks would be my choices; actually don't care much who plays Rhett.

Chelsea Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

Elle, I couldn't agree more. If the book is actually written factually, then Scarlett will be only a minor, pre-teen character with no interaction with Rhett (as they didn't meet until GWTW). So first of all, what's the point in suggesting actresses for Scarlett if she's going to be like 10 years old? Sorry but even I don't think many 30 year old actresses can pull off 10..Same thing goes for Rhett, he'll be like 20 something (he was 36 in GWTW), so that leaves out Clooney and the rest of the rest of the 40+ year old actors people have suggested. It's just a mistake to do a movie like this altogether. I don't think they will, they're just writing a book so far, the people at EW are the ones who suggested a movie.

Jenny Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

I want Natalie Portman in the movie.

Elle Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Scarlett would not be in the prequel since she only met Rhett at the beginning of Gone With the Wind. Do your research!

Brandy Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 07:52 AM EST

Although I think this is a BAD BAD BAD idea, I could see Sophia Bush from One Tree Hill as Scarlett. Since the show is a "teeny drama" Bush doesn't always get the credit she deserves. I often see glimpses of Scarlett in her character, Brooke.
As for Rhett, Clooney would be my pick if it's wasn't a prequel. So, I guess I think it would have to be an unknown.
Kacey -- I can definitely see Ryan Gosling as Ashley.

Jager Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 01:39 AM EST

Well, it DOES say "prequel", so hopefully they won't screw up and destroy the concept of the whole movie for future generations (while it's a continual thorn in my side, the new [and horrible[]"Flash Gordon" series is going to make many future viewers shy away from the wonderfully campy 1980 "Flash Gordon" movie....)

However... Rhett.. Brosnan or Clooney... Scarlett... Anne Hathaway or Michelle Ryan (don't blame Bionic Woman solely on her - she's a great actress - working with bad material)

Why? Sun, Oct 21, 2007 at 12:12 AM EST

Next they'll want to remake 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Why not just have some artist go 'improve' a few Rembrandts or take an axe to the Venus de Milo??
Duhhhhhhhhhhhh.

lency Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

I like the movie just the way it is and watch it every year. It still gives me goosebumps.

Addie Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 08:04 PM EST

GWTW is my fave book and movie of all time. I had not heard about this book, and it really turns my stomach to think about another movie being made, whether it be prequel, remake or combination of the two. Some of the suggestions here of who could possibly fill the shoes of the great Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh (while also fitting the characters of Rhett and Scarlett) also make my stomach turn. The only names mentioned that sound slightly acceptable are MAYBE Anne Hathaway and Jonathan Rhys Myers. I just really don't feel right discussing this at all, though. Please, movie makers, leave this one alone!!!

sara Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 07:50 PM EST

They don't make guys like Clark Gable anymore...

I guess if it has to be remade, maybe Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Christian Bale

and for Scarlett...I see Maggie Gyllenhall or Eva Green

Maureen Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 06:22 PM EST

Reading these comments, I'm just amazed and happy that a 68-year-old movie can still evoke this type of passion. I'm not sure what movies made today I'll care about a year from now.

Silv Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 06:00 PM EST

Ther is a reason why perfection never needs to be re-made.

Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Ther is a reason why perfection never needs to be re-made.

Bennie Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Why are they remaking (or perhaps premaking) this. Gone with the wind is one of the best movies ever and to make a prequel is just stupid. Well the book is okay but a movie NO. Does anybody even remember what the plot of Scarlett is? Or who was in that movie version? NO . People for the love of god just leave it the f&^k alone.

Jen Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

Anne Hathaway revealed she could do a period drama with her critically-acclaimed performance in "Becoming Jane" I could see her, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, or Abbie Cornish, Emily Blunt, or Naomi Watts portray Scarlett. The best young actor to portray Rhett, would be my personal favorite , Colin Farrell( even though he is short) . I also could see Russell Crowe,or any of the top Aussie Actors- Simon Baker,Hugh Jackman,etc...

ILOVEGWTW Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

New information - the book covers the years of 1843 - 1872, so it covers both "prequel" years AND RETELLS GWTW FROM RHETT'S PERSPECTIVE. (WTF???!!! WHY???) Prequel OK, there were lots of tantalizing bits of info in GWTW about Rhett's sordid past, getting kicked out of the Charleston social scene and all. Could make a very interesting story. But retell from his perspective??? I don't want to read something akin to Rhett Butler in a psychiatrist's chair... would totally destroy the character for me.

And as to the new Scarlett -- UGH. Maybe Kate Beckinsale. Maybe Penelope Cruz if she could possibly adopt a REAL southern accent. I still say Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is the only young Rhett I could even consider at this point.

But overall, WTF????

Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

I'm liking what KayRay said about Rhett being a minor part and focus on his family in Charleston. Cast Clooney as Rhett's father and you may have something to work with.

Chelsea D. Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 11:58 AM EST

George Clooney is 40+ years OLD! Rhett was 36 in GWTW, and if this is a prequel, he has to be even younger! I would prefer it if they NOT even tarnish the GWTW legacy even more, but if you had to cast a Rhett, pick an unknown. What's the point in casting Scarlett? She won't interact with Rhett (they met in GWTW), she was 16 at the beginning of that movie, so she'd be even younger in this one.

FLIPPER Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

George Clooney!!?? Are you people insane??

KayRay Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

The ONLY way this would work is if it truly is Rhett Butler's PEOPLE -- focus on his family prior to the Civil War, with Rhett a very minor character. Then you can cast anyone in the other roles -- how about Russell Crowe as his father, Nicole Kidman as mom? I think there was a sister, too ??

Jane Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

Not that ANYONE could ever hope to compete with the originals, and it doesn't even matter re. who would play Scarlett b/c she'd be too young to appear in a pre-quel anyway, BUT- some of these suggestions are insane. Julia Stiles? UGH! Give me a break, to whomever said that- did you not see the movie?

billy Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

Clooney. Rachel McAdams. Ryan Gosling. Ethan Hawke. Anne Hathaway. Reese Witherspoon.

RobinL Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 09:15 AM EST

My first thought was Clooney but I'm not sure he would work in a prequel. I thought maybe Jude Law. He has a certain air about him and with his hair darkened it could work.

DanOregon Sat, Oct 20, 2007 at 07:59 AM EST

At the opening of GWTW Scarlett (according to the book) is 16 years old..so if this is a prequel she has to be even younger than that..there will be no Scarlett/Rhett interaction as they don't meet until GWTW..what's the point? I guess they can elaborate on Rhett's strained relationship with his father in Charleston..and the night he "ruined his reputation"..but other than that, I think this is just a mistake altogether. These are Margaret Mitchell's characters..only she can write them to their true potential. So if we're going to cast the 16-or less year old Scarlett, I'd say cast an unknown..same goes for the 20 something year old Rhett. Or better yet, JUST DON'T DO IT! Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable OWN those roles!

I'll uphold the meme: Scarlett was in her teens (nineteen, is my memory) in the opening of GWTW. If this is a prequel, she should probably be played by no one older than Dakota Fanning. Actually, Scarlett is probably nowhere in this prequel: it's probably Belle Watling.

Why do they insist on doing this kind of stupidity? It's perfect just the way it is. It's like trying to rewrite the last supper. Oh wait, they already did that with DuhVinci Code. And we all know how lame that turned out.
Leave it alone!! Rhett and Scarlett don't give a damn.

Why remake it?????? jeeze we are remaking everything!

Since they are supposed to be young in the film, Zac Efron and V. Hudgens. That way you know it'll suck

Carrie is right-LEAVE IT ALONE!!

Clearly, Britney Spears is begging to be cast in the role of Scarlett. Or am I thinking of the role of Belle Watling.

I don't see any current actors or actresses living up to Vivien Leigh or Clark Gable. Maybe Clooney, but I wish we'd leave it alone, personally.

Putting Southern authenticity aside:

Rhett - Gerard Butler, Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Eric Bana. I don't think Clooney would work. He's too much of a "nice" guy

Scarlett - Marion Coitillard, Carice van Houten, Ashley Judd, Mary Louise Parker, Evangeline Lilly

Ashley - Patrick Wilson, Ryan Gosling

Sorry ya'll, ... at the beginning of GWTW Scarlett was 16 near Atlanta, if this was about Rhett (who grew up in Charleston) - she won't be making an appearance. And anyone who thinks Clooney can pull off a Clark Gable is completely off-base - you need someone to be smooth AND sharp-witted at the same time (Clooney is too smooth in my book). Jonathan Rhys-Myers would be my first choice for a young Rhett.

George Clooney is truly the only acceptable Rhett/Gable subsitute. I don't care if he's supposed to be younger. We'll live. If forced to go younger, I'd have to say Matthew MacFadyen, the 2005 Mr. Darcy.

Justin Chambers for Rhett (man, that would be so good!), and maybe Julia Stiles as Scarlett.

You all forget that this is a PREquel, which means the characters are younger than Scarlett and Rhett at the beginning of GWTW. So Scarlett is probably a teenager and Rhett is probably 20s or 30s. So for Rhett becase of the youth I nominate Michael Rosenbaum (Lex on Smallville) with some scruff and hair added appropriately of course. I think the girl who won America's Next Top Model a few years ago, Yoanna, has the look but she's probably taller than Lex Luthor, so that doesn't work. Perhaps Mischa Barton could really stretch to pull off a spoiled brat like Scarlett? smirk.

Hhmm, George Clooney! I have never thought of him before, but he would be damn perfect. I can't even think of anyone else who would have Rhett's good looks, but be all man at the same time. You could also go for Clive Owen, or someone of that category. Still really attractive, but not tradtionally so. I have the same problem with a Scarlett casting. You want someone pretty & feminine, but with harsh features. So, when I think of the pretty actresses with acting chops, Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, Kate Beckinsale, I feel they are too soft featured. Maybe Angelina Jolie...she could embody Vivien Leigh's both frail, smallness and her cold, vixen appeal. I love Gone with the Wind, and feel it was perfectly cast. I'd be real wary to see it cast today! Though, it may be nice to get a little more of the sex in the movie that's in the book!
