Snap judgment: Britney Spears' 'Gimme More' video

Oct 5, 2007, 12:07 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Britney Spears, Horror, Music

Gimmegimme_l_2 Before you go rushing to iTunes and blow $1.99 to download Britney Spears' brand new "Gimme More" video, here are a few things you should know.

1) If you've seen those ubiquitous paparazzi pics of a brunette Spears donning a leather vest and fishnets on the day of the video shoot, and can imagine them airbrushed and color-corrected, then you've pretty much seen everything there is to see. Sure, there's a few seconds of footage of Brit in a tacky blonde wig, accompanied by a couple of blond friends, giddily staring at "Stripper Britney," but mostly, it's just our dark-haired heroine walking in circles around a pole.

2) Carmen Electra already conquered the "good girl with exotic-dancer alter-ego" genre -- with more enthusiasm and better moves -- in her 1992 clip for "Go Go Dancer," which is streaming free of charge here at PopWatch (after the jump).

3) The "Gimme More" videoclip is quite possibly an homage to Lindsay Lohan's ghastly I Know Who Killed Me, which (spoiler alert!) focused on a bad-ass stripper who experiences "psychic stigmata" after the Yale-bound twin sister from whom she was separated at birth is kidnapped and mutilated by a serial killer. (No, I didn't make that up. And yes, I actually paid to see I Know Who Killed Me. But I did it all for you, PopWatchers….all for you!)

4) A few minutes ago, during my first viewing of "Gimme More," I got distracted IM-ing with one of my friends about whether or not fruit is an acceptable dessert option. I say, perhaps. (Feel free to weigh in.)

The moral of the story is, if you're going to build an entire video around a stripper pole, then you better work said pole like a nine-to-five. Drop it like it's hot. Throw a leg up over your head. Hire one of the elegant ladies of HBO's G-String Divas, and have her teach you that daring move where you hang upside down by your legs and spin with reckless abandon. Alas, in the case of "Gimme More," I've seen sexier pole work during an afternoon of fly-fishing.

(Update: Looks like "Gimme More" has found its way to YouTube -- at least until somebody at Britney's label tells 'em to take it down -- so check it out for yourself, and do a side-by-side comparison with Ms. Electra, after the jump!)

Chris E Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 09:26 PM EST

The girl looks good considering she pushed out 2 kids in a row. There's no denying Britney looks great. But the question is the video great? No, but it ain't that bad either. There's absolutely no concept, but isn't that about the same as any current Hip Hop video featuring a scantily clad female in a bunch of rappers?

Palys Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 04:23 PM EST

Dear John,

Here is the world premiere of Britney's official video on MTV.

http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2007/10/08/britneys-gimmie-more-video/comment-page-31/#comments

Although speaking of fruits and desserts is 1000% more interesting than this garbage, I couldn't pass the chance to let you know that, as usual, my "sources" are 110% correct.

And, It's Palys, b****!

Chris Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 06:47 AM EST

The video is a load of fried crap! RETIRE Britney please!!!! It's over!!!!

Martha Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 06:25 PM EST

Have to agree with just about everyone else here, Slezak...if you are entertaining, fruit is only an acceptable dessert with a dairy topping, baked in pastry, or both. You can get away with just fruit if it's your family or roommate, though. ...was there another topic in this post? I wasn't paying attention.

BilliamE Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 01:40 AM EST

Fruit is only a dessert if it is accompanied by some kind of processed sugar product, including but not limited to chocolate...

John Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

Paly, get your sources right. This is only a promotional directors cut. Mtv.com said that the official video (different version) will air monday

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1571296/20071005/spears_britney.jhtml

Palys Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Sorry John but this IS the official video. It sucks hard and looks dead, just like your idol.

Unfitney, please go away now...career is officially OVAH!

John Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:47 PM EST

I LOVED the gimmme more vid! Brit showed that she still can drop it likes it hot!

As for just the stripper pole, well brit will release the OFFICIAL video on monday, that is just promotional.

ChrisChicago Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 10:48 PM EST

I loved Go Go Dancer when I was younger...knew every word, and loved the video. Thanks for the memories, Slezak!

As for Gimmie More: I still like it. I saw the video tonight on E!, and it wasn't horrible, just not to Britney's potential. On another note, I feel sorry for her everytime I see her surrounded by tons of photographers...I can't imagine what it would be like to live like that. Don't jump on me, I know she asked for a lot of it, but still, it has to be disconcerting having your every move photographed every second of your life...

donner Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:59 PM EST

Figs covered in yogurt (a la Nigella Lawson) is a good dessert...slices of Granny Smith on a plate, not so much...but maybe w/ a little peanut butter and raisins, you could pretend you're back in 4th grade, eh?

Britney sucks...The End...

Joe C Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

Hey, the song is #3 in the country this week, so maybe the Britster gets the last laugh in this one area.

Ma Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

No offense to Brit but I hate this song. I can't understand why my teenage daughter loves it so much. Guess she's still in the 'oops I did it again' zone. Once a Brittany fan, always a Brittany fan?

Beth Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 08:53 PM EST

Fruit is acceptable as a breakfast or a snack. It is not acceptable as a dessert unless it has either been dipped in chocolate or made into a pie.

Becca Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 08:03 PM EST

i think fruit is an acceptable dessert option if you want it to be... but its no substitute for chocolate though :D... & britney may be a slut, but there is no reason to advertise that to the world(even though im pretty sure the only thing she would give a convincing strip performance for is a big mac or a whopper... something like that) (&even though we already know that she is) in a badly written, performed, sung video...

whoohoo Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

Gonna pass on the BS, but I agree with the others that tossing an apple or orange at someone is not dessert. Fruit salad-fine, but that's work. Some dippings or a nice cheese is always nice.

Stacy Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 07:16 PM EST

YouTube has yanked Brit's video. What I wanna know, how does Michael Slezak know about that 15 year old Carmen Electra song? LOL!

And, mad props to the special effects dept. I saw the video earlier and couldn't believe how much better she looked than in th epics from the video shoot!

Jason Bonkers Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

Jason: I have to give you your props. At least you are being honest. The reason you are probably giving someone like Britney your money,is- she turns you on. If you did not buy her music you would not get to see her disgrace herself. She is making a total fool of herself. Stephanie is so right.
Go get yourself a mate. Someone you can actually touch in real life.

Vicki Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 06:54 PM EST

The editing and special effects in that video deserves some credit.... look at the photos from the video shoot. Wow.

http://thesuperficial.com/2007/07/britney_spears_ok_magazine_pho.php

jason Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

it's not THAT bad. goodness. but certainly not britney caliber. i still stand behind the song as pretty good though. like a lot of singers, i like the songs, but DO NOT like them. so am i a hypocrite for giving her my money. sure, but at least i can admit it.

daisyj Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 04:10 PM EST

Oh, and one other time when fruit-alone works: slices of watermelon at a picnic/barbecue, especially if you're somewhere where you can spit the seeds.

Stephanie T. Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

She is and never was emotionally intelligent enough and responsible enough to have children, and neither was Kevin. Seriously, if I was the head of the Los Angeles department of child welfare, those kids would have been in Foster care by now. Foster care sucks but keeping them with Tweedle Dope and Tweedle Drunk is a far worse place to be.

Valerie Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:58 PM EST

Chocolate, caramel, or at least some whipped cream are mandatory to make fruit a dessert ! Fruit alone is just that. Fruit.

anti-mary poppins Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

Maybe she doesn't want the kids.

liz Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

it really depends on the fruit and how it is served. a fruit platter or fruit salad totally fine, or fruit with something, totally fine, but i wouldn't give people like an apple with nothing else.

j9 Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

Fruit alone does not equal dessert. By definition dessert is a "sweet course of a meal", and I don't think plain or whole fruit qualify as sweet enough. Dice em up and put sugar on it, okay maybe. Whipped cream and fruit? Better. Fruit dipped in melted chocolate? Now you're talking!

Oh, and as for Britney. Who cares.

SuzieC Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

I agree with snarky. Fruit alone is a no-no. With, on, or in some baked or frozen treat, then yes it works.
Oh wait this post is about a pop tart... the video made me sad. It's just a never ending train wreck and I feel helpless because I can't stop it. (Her career, not the video.)
Oh, who do I contact to get those 4 minutes of my life back? Anyone know?

Phil Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

Ok good news first then bad news for your totally obsessed Britney fans! First, the name of Britney's new album has FINALLY been revealed today as BLACKOUT and is due Nov. 13th. And for all of you drooling at your desks, hopin to purchase "GIMME MORE" when you get home? The video premieres on Tv outlets Monday, and doesn't go on sale on iTunes til Tues. Enjoy your weekends!

Stephanie T. Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 02:05 PM EST

It HAS to be chocolate in order for it to be called desert.

Brit is not convincing as an erotic dancer but sadly me thinks this video is showing us the future of Miss Spears. I am curious to know if there is a copy of the song without her vocal track floating around cyber space. The elctro beat is outstanding and electropop composers like Brian Eno would be proud.

Nancy Walker Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

One thing I can say for Britney, no matter how pathetic she has become, she does not give up. Stick a fork in her she is done.

Ed Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

Michael, I'm obsessed with all things Britney - fascinating to see soo much money go to waste. I'll be buying her video when I get outta work. All I can say about Britney is - GIMME MORE GIMME MORE GIMME GIMME MORE!

I can't wait for tonight when I'm at the club and all the gays go crazy when this song comes on!

queen of disrepair Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

macerating the fruit in sugar (with a hint of lemon juice)to create a simple syrup and then adding a little sparkling water after chilling is a delightfully refreshing dessert option. And, it's probably better for you than watching videos of an opiate sucking train wreck.

JenJen Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

The fans that are buying this song are putting money directly in Brit's pocket...more for her to buy booze and drugs with! Congrats, you are enabling a addict so that she can continue to neglect her children and focus on what's really important...her career.

SammyDKat Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

Didn't need to see the jelly filled buns. She's dancing like that's a pole on a subway train rather than in a strip club.

GingerCat Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

Oh, fruit goes well with ice cream too, of course.
Also, I recall Kate Moss pole danced in the White Stripes' "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" video. I'm no fan of hers, but that was some pretty good pole dancing. Not that I've seen a lot of pole dancing in my life.

GingerCat Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:40 PM EST

I'm in agreement with those who say fruit needs to have something done to it to qualify as a dessert. Bake it, pair it with pastry or chocolate, macerate it in Grand Marnier, make it into a sauce and put it on cheesecake. But whole, raw fruit? No. It's part of a healthy diet, sure, but it's not dessert.

Phil Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

I don't drink coffee, so I'm not inclined to visit StarBucks more than a few times a year, but my friends have recently turned me on to thier Strawberries & Cream drink! IF that counts as fruit, then YEAH... Nice little dessert!
This Britney video is about as bad as I knew it would be. After watching it, its exactly as how I envisioned it when I read the reviews of her making it back in July. If she had paparazzi there taking pictures of her on the set, did she even have a budget? Or did that ALL go to whoever digitally photo-shopped this entire video??? And the 2 guys at the end, is the shaggy haired one, the one she took back to a hot tub after the video shoot? They're not that attractive! But they're finally releasing the video NOW since the song is officially a hit. Let her have her good news, maybe then she'll FINALLY prioritize & START to get her personal life in order & realize thats where her priorities should be, NOT the entertainment world that just criticizes her daily now!

Brandie Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

Fruit works as a dessert only when it's summer or if it's paired with a cake or cookie of some kind. Oh, and that video is the worst video of all time.

arahsae Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

Slezak, you took the words out of my mouth. All she does is walk in circles around the pole. I would say it looks like an amateur p0rn director had his hand in it, but I think even that would be more visually stimulating than this sad, sad piece of crap.

kats Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Fruit with chocolate: yes. Fruit with cake/pastry, and/or cream/ice cream: yes. Fruit with cheese: yes. Fruit salad: maybe. A bowl of whole fruit: no.

Patti Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

A lovely strawberry shortcake with piles of whipped cream = perfect dessert!

Patti Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

It looks like she made it in her basement with a camera phone. The song is boring and repetitious and she just spins around the pole. Unfortunately tons of people will probably buy it for the voyeur value.

nicie Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

Um, this vid kinda rocks, i like the grainy, edgy look for some reason ... and dont' all videos ultimately kinda suck now anyway? what's the last great video, something by Eminem, I'd say...

Cranky Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

Fruit is dessert only when surrounded by sweet, sweet creamy deliciousness or pastry. Britney is only talented when surrounded by sweet, sweet airbrushing and vocal reverb.

djm Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

Who is buying "Gimme More"? The song is lame and the video is even worse. It's nice to see Carmen pre-implants - her video puts Britts to shame and so the does the song actually.

In regards to the fruit - maybe if it's in a pie or a tart, but bringing a banana or an apple is not "dessert".

mscisluv Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

First - love that the fruit conversation takes priority here.

Second - Carmen worked it in that video and actually showed real dancing and gymnastic ability. Anyone else that thinks that walking in circles around a pole is impressive, please take notes.

daisyj Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

I think fruit can be a dessert, if it's good enough. Semi-ripe orange slices? Nah. A perfect, fresh peach that you have to eat over the sink because it's so juicy? Totally.
Also, strawberries with brown sugar.

Liz Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

I think fruit is fine for a dessert.

miami Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

Cooked fruit - acceptable
Raw fruit - unacceptable as dessert but can be a side dish or palate cleanser.

Bertie Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:57 AM EST

Forgot to comment about the fruit. Chocolate fondue with strawberries, that's what I'm talkin' about!! We just tried this fondue place last weekend and wow. All kinds of fruit, not plain of course :)

kelsey Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

I agree with teecee, fruit is acceptable anytime because it's sweet & good for you. I have a small cup of green grapes I'm about to take to class with me as my dessert for lunch.

Although Stephanie makes a good point as well.

mark in nyc Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

I believe fruit is an acceptable dessert as long as the presentationis there.....but for me (besides sweets) a cheese course is a great dessert (with some fruit).
As far as the Brittny vid goes...who cares.
Also, I call shannagians on her song reaching number 3 on the billboard charts...it was number 65 or something for three weeks with no airplay and suddenly it jumps to number 3? I am betting someone inthe Britt camp went out and bought it a few thousand times.

Stephanie Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

unless there's chocolate involved, it's not dessert.

Myma Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

I think it depends on what kind of fruit. If its just plain apples then no way, but if it is fancy berries or mixed tropical fruit then sure.

teecee Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

GeeMoney: read point 4 of michael's blog.

Gretchen Weiners Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

Now, are you talking about fruit as a dessert in a restaurant or just at home? In a restaurant I would say it's a little weird. If paired with cheese or contained in a cake, pie, or tart (or in a key lime creme brulee like I had last weekend OMG soooo good!) then it's cool.

Bertie Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

Um, I don't even know what to say. Honestly I don't expect too much from her these days. Her videos used to at least be fun and she could sell them with her dancing. This video looks like she didn't have a budget to work with. Dancing on a pole doesn't seem all that challenging. How did she think this would show ANY talent that she may have left??

new yorker Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:34 AM EST

Unfortunately, I saw the video before reading this post, and I do agree with you Slezak. If I were to go to a strip club and that's what the girls were doing, I would say, gimme less, please.

GeeMoney Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

I have no idea what teecee and snarky are talking about, and I bet no one else will either. Either way, I'm downloading Britney's new single tonight even though I am 1) tired of her drama and 2)tired of reading about her. Besides, the video is a wonderful piece of trash. Go Britney!

teecee Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

i find fruit acceptable dessert, entree, appetizer, or snack. i love the stuff and eat tons of it. it's quite healthy you know. (this opinion reflects what i think about the young lady mentioned in this blog. enough already. she should be in the same category as paris: we should ignore them).

here we go again Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

let the bashing begin (Slezak, any and all britney posts are the same, they're old. please go see "The Heartbreak Kid" so we don't have to).

snarky Fri, Oct 5, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Thank you Slezak for watching this so we don't have to. I just wanted to say that fruit alone is not really a dessert, but if you pair it with some whipped cream, cake or maybe cheese, it is acceptable.
