You know you want to see 'The Game Plan,' and that's okay

Becool_l Fact: If I wasn't going to be enjoying a PBR (Professional Bull Riders) event this Saturday night, I would be enjoying a sneak peek of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's new Disney movie, The Game Plan, which officially hits theaters Sept. 28.

This isn't my crap addiction talking. This is me genuinely being drawn to a movie that stars The Rock as a pro quarterback, who suddenly learns that he has a daughter and a dog that doesn't mind wearing a tutu. I know how the story will go — the daughter will ruin his life, then become the love of it — and for once, that's part of the charm. In fact, I'm pretty sure I will ovulate if The Rock, at any point, cuddles with his daughter in a bed that's too small for him. Or, if the girl gets lost or injured and he tells her how much he would've missed her. (Bring it, Disney. Bring it!)

So who else is tempted to see The Game Plan? And who still finds themselves pleasantly surprised each time they're reminded that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson can actually act? (See Be Cool, pictured, where he played a scene-stealing gay bodyguard/aspiring thespian).

Slightly embarrassed to say this, but it looks pretty good for the formulaic Disney comedy that it probably is. Apparently a lot of other people thought so too, since it was #1 at the box office this weekend! Dwayne Johnson was on "Late Night" last Thursday night and he's actually quite the comedian...held his own with Conan and everything.

Lynny Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 09:42 AM EST

It looks totally formulaic... and that is okay. The Rock is very charismatic and fun to watch. My 7 year-old wants to see it too. I think it could be fun.

Julie Noufal Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 07:23 AM EST

Wow!! I truly enjoyed the movie I think it was good even my 6 year old got teary eye. I am glad it came in #1 at the box office.

Ugh-are you kidding me? The preview was awful. Why would anyone want to see this?

Nancy Walker Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

I agree, he can act. For some reason he reminds me of an aged Esai Morales in this getup. I believe it will be a good film for all to watch.

Mikey M Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:22 PM EST

I hate the movies The Rock is in and the idea that he will probably be in the Escape to Witch Mountain remake gives me the shivers.

thankyouthankyouthankyou! I thought I was the only one who noticed they did that to the popwatch entries on the side! I hat that it's dumb advertisements now. Also, I doubt anyone has this problem, but whenever I switch to a screen, it automatically jumps to the top of the page and I have to scroll down and find my place.

Ep Sato Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

The movie seems to me like a netflix rental, but yeah, the Rock is actually a decent actor. Also agreed that he was the best (actually, only good) part of Be Cool.

Which begs the question. Why was Be Cool so lame when Get Shorty was so awesome?

Wrasslin' Sucks Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

I am amazed at how good of an actor The Rock is. I will probably take my wife and kids to The Gameplan.

LisaMama Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

This is a renter for me and my kids -- the football hook for them and the Rock hook for me.
Oh, and I don't know where else to complain about this, so here it goes: why did EW.com remove the PopWatch links from the pages containing the full PopWatch stories? Now I have to read the full story, click on PopWatch main, then find the story I want. You used to be able to click all the day's PopWatch headlines on the right side. What gives, EW? Did you need more room for ads? Be honest!

dala Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

i was an extra for this movie!!!!

Heather Wixson Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

I will forgive The Rock for this one as I was a rabid Rock fan when he was in WWF (I still have my cardboard cut-out to prove it and it still gets decorated for major holidays). I have pretty much liked everything he's done (Doom was okay and he saved Be Cool) so I know he makes really smart choices in movies. Want proof? Rent Gridiron Gang. He was fantastic in it. I read some where he made this movie so his daughter could see him act (his nickname for her? Pebbles. See, now I'M ovulating!) so I will forgive him this one and probably go and see it just because I miss him so. Still waiting for Southland Tales and that's a-comin' soon!

Nic Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

I'm also excited to see him in Get Smart.

TSD Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

The Rock is a great actor. He was horrible in The Scorpion King, but The Rundown was great! He improved remarkably! I want to see The Gameplan. I hope he comes out on top this weekend.

StarkyDerwin Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

I agree with everyone that said The Rock is a shockingly good actor considering he came out of wrestling. I'll be seeing this movie for him, the guy literally trips me out with his charisma.

aa Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

i love the rock. the rundown was awesome and he made the crappy be cool bearable. however, i have absolutely no desire to see this movie.

BrandonK Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

No. No, no, no! Bad Mandi! I'm beginning to think all of your pleasures are of the guilty variety.

Allison Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

I love the Rock. When he popped out as Mr.Peeper's father on SNL...HILARIOUS.

kana Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

He CAN act, but he doesn't always make good choices, this being a case in point. But when that man smiles... oh my goodness. There's a god.

dan Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

Mandi... mandimandimandimandimandi.

No. Thinking about this movie makes me want to die.

evie Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Can I steal your "I'm pretty sure I will ovulate if..." line? That was brilliant.

Not so brilliant is the "Pop Tarts presents American Idol" video thing that is hovering over this comment box. You know, for those of us accessing this site through a massive firewall set up by our evil corporation, this slows the site down so much that my poor computer has to turn its fan on.

Scott M. Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

The Rundown was by far the Rock's best movie. The Rock and The Continental, together... A modern classic. Some great fight scenes too.

t3hdow Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

Watching the Rock back in his wrestling days single handedly gave me a reason to view it for a few years. Just search for old WWF clips and see how funny he was back in those days. He stole the show everytime the camera paned onto him. Although I'm sad to see his presence in the WWE being reduced to guest appearances - one of the reasons I stopped watching - I can't say I blame him for leaving, considering how many famous wrestlers died in the past few years.
As for this movie, it just underscores his acting. This reminds me too much of that Vin Diesel kids film, The Pacifier (I think that's what it's called). It'll only appeal to kids and no one else.

CBD Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

I hate to admit it, but the tv trailers have been re-edited to be actually funny. I remember seeing the original trailer in the theater and thinking, oh my god, why did they even bother. But then again, I love me some Rock.

Me Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Looks lame, probably is.

Coach's Mistress Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:10 AM EST

I will be seeing this movie this weekend with my kids, and it's something we ALL want to see. I just love The Rock. I never watched wrestling, but I'm glad he was able to use it as a launching pad for his movie career. He just seems so geniune, and is quite pleasant to look at as well

Mells Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

I love The Rock and I've only seen him in movies, I never watched wrestling. He's an actor with great comedic timing and wonderful charisma. I will be seeing The Game Plan too - maybe on dvd tho...

Lori Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:39 AM EST

My kids' youth group is seeing it in October, and I begged to be a chaperone. 'Nuff said.

Ceballos Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

I've been a big fan of The Rock. I'm much more ashamed to say that I've been following him since his "wrestling" days than I am to say I wouldn't mind seeing him in this movie. He's a good-looking dude, he's obviously got the chops to be an action star, and he has very good comedic timing along with an air of warmth around him. So why shouldn't he be a movie star?

Also, although, the trailer's been out there ad nauseum, but, for some reason, the thought of a show called "The Magical World of Ponies" actually existing cracks me up.

I don't know what it is with Disney this fall, but I've been feeling REALLY generous toward this trailer and the ads for "Enchanted"...but that's probably because it looks like my boy James Marsden is gonna steal that movie.

Larry Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:04 AM EST

He just isn't the star he should be. I can see him not only being an incredible action star, but from that scene from Be Cool - an Oscar winner! He's got the IT. I hope this gives him cross over fame!

Liz Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:02 AM EST

While I may not see it in theaters, I'll definitely be cuddling up to this Rock movie--as I do with all his movies. He's just so darn charming and sexy, and damn can the man move! I'm ovulating with you Mandi!

wildecat Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:51 AM EST

"I'm pretty sure I will ovulate if The Rock, at any point, cuddles with his daughter in a bed that's too small for him" - thanks, Mandi, for making me spit my coffee all over my computer screen! TOO funny!!

Snsetblaze Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:43 AM EST

Unless I can take one of my nieces or nephews to this, I probably won't see it in the theaters but I may rent it at some point when I'm in the mood for something like that. And unlike most sports figures, the Rock can actually act and he is quite hot. I did not see Be Cool, but watch Girdroin Gang. The Rock is quite good in that. (And also in Doom - even though that role did not call for much).

Dee Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:30 AM EST

No, Mandi, you're not crazy for wanting to "expwerience de heat!". The Rock CAN act........AND make you ovulate!!!!!!

Maveness Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:13 AM EST

I'll admit it - normally trite movies that make you get a cavity because they're so sweet? I could tolerate for The Rock. Because with all the toughness, he's got that sweet smile, and he seems genuinely charming.

GingerCat Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:55 AM EST

I don't really believe in the whole "so bad it's good" thing most of the time. So no, I don't want to see this.
Also, the fact that you talked about The Rock making you ovulate makes me want to lose my breakfast, to put it politely. Sorry.

Lars Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:40 AM EST

I'd sooner visit a klingon proctologist than see this movie.

Sara Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:11 AM EST

/hand for wanting to see it
*
/hand for being pleasantly surprised by his acting
*
And, you didn't mention it, but /hand for thinking he's hott.
