Snap judgment: Mika's 'Happy Ending' video

I love Mika. I love him like I love a bowl of Half Baked after a long day. If his songs came in a pint of Ben & Jerry's, I would eat them. Seriously.

But just as I love my Half Baked, I love my Mika sweet and sugary. So when I found out he released a video for "Happy Ending" — a track off Life in Cartoon Motion that I neglected to purchase because it wasn't "happy" enough for me, ironically — my expectations for a lively and colorful video were minimal.

But boy, was I wrong. In what is probably his most psychedelic video yet, Mika delivers a mesmerizing dream sequence that carries the singer through his roof and above the Earth while he solemnly sings about "no hope, no love, no glory." And though what seems to be a sober song about being dumped translates into an inspired and imaginative video, I can't seem to get over what happens about 1:53 through, when the hands appear. Doing its best Labyrinth impression, the last half of "Happy Ending" shows Mika surrounded by dozens of disembodied hands — a sequence that I find much more creepy than dreamy. Pair that scene with the first one, where the singer floats against a backdrop of animated room decor (where wallpaper plays its biggest role since Garden State), and you've got a music video that officially elevates Mika's usual sugar high to an acid trip.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Did you find the video to be a great work of artistry, or just downright disturbing? And were you expecting orange puppets to show up and start rolling heads as much as I was?

I love Mika. I listen to Mika all the time, my life seems to revolve around Mika nowadays. But honestly, I don't know if to cry, laugh, run away, or hug my computer now. This video is...is...amazing, creepy, horrible, great, the best and the worst. Impossible to describe.

I love the video even though i was reminded of the Labyrinth as well, i still found it to be incredibly amazing.

i finally bought the CD, and i love it. i like the video because it's different, and mika is two kinds of sexy. more mika please. oh and a p.s., american radio listen up, play more music like this and lay off of songs that include the words "shawty" or "drank", i'm just sayin.

Not the kind of person into Mika music. Also the kind of person who as a sheltered eight year old was traumatized for life by those orange things from Labyrinth. Now you have traumatized me again and as I have no responsibility it's all your fault I'm going to see if I can sue for enough money to get an iPod touch v. 2.1....

God, I love Mika.
His videos don't prepare for his live performance, though. He's crazy energetic on stage, but his videos seem to always be sort of lyrical and calm, not hyper.

Not my favorite Mika track by a long shot, but definately his best video so far. I love Labyrinth and would have thought of that the minute the hands started singing even if it hadn't been mentioned in the review.

Mika is a genius , his music makes me feel better and "Happy Ending" is a very moving song to listen to.
The Music Video for "Happy Ending" is great but I still have a soft heart for "Love Today" .

I actually shuddered that was so creeptastic. Gah, thanks for the nightmares, dude.

I love Mika too.

Congrats

Love the video -- very surreal, dreamy quality; so many details to look at and analyze. Like this version of the song, as well -- slightly different from the album version. We're having a big discussion about this video (and all things Mika!) over on mikafanclub.com -- most love it, some find it cheesy... and I keep watching it again and again. :)

Great song. Video is just OK. The first part is good. Love the wallpaper but wish he would have used it more. The hands, no.

I love it! One of my favorite tracks from the album, and a great video to match. A little trippy, yeah, but one of the main refrains of the song is the line "I feel as if I'm wasted/wasted everyday" so it's only fitting...

thank you for brightening my day with two of my favorite things- mika and the labrynth. and speaking of those orange things that try to rip off jennifer connelly's head, i always wondered why they could bounce their heads like basketballs.

The first half is cool, but the singing hands? That's just freaky.

This is one of my favorite Mika tracks, and even though the video is truly bizarre, it totally fits in with his whole aesthetic. Would we expect anything less? Plus the part where the background vocals kick in with "little bit of love" gets me every time. Doesn't matter what it looks like if it still sounds so incredible.

I saw this video two days ago, and I couldn't make up my mind about it. I saw Mika in concert in Atlanta, and this was one of his best songs, but the video's even too out there for this Mika fan. I enjoy it for the most part, but agreed about the weird hands part. Creeeeeepy
