What TV show do you know you hate (without ever watching)?

Sep 7, 2007, 03:55 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Television

Psych_l All week long, I've been basking in US Open tennis coverage on USA — that Venus Williams-Jelena Jankovic match was a doozy! — and the only drawback has been enduring the barrage of ads for the network's dramedy Psych (starring Dulé Hill and James Roday, pictured). In the spirit of that sappy old Savage Garden song where they sing "I knew I loved you before I met you," I know I hate Psych before I've watched it.

Is it wrong that I'm judging a show based on its promos alone? Sure it is! But if I can't endure 30 seconds of Roday's "look at me being wacky!" mugging — and Hill's wide-eyed fustiness — there's no way I'm subjecting myself to a full hour. (Unless all of you gang up on me in the comments section and demand it.)

In the meantime, I'm curious: What's the one show you know you hate, even though you've never watched it? I know, I know, you've got a whole top 10 list, but let's all try to be super selective and limit ourselves to a single pick. Ready, set, kvetch!

One more thing: Ugly Betty is also a good show. I love how true it is to the soap opera style and the classic comic book format it comes in. You just have to stick with it for a bit.

Also, Earl rules, American Idol/The Hills/Laguna Beach/etc. must die and FOX needs to stop lame summer/midseason replacements. And Glee didn't suck. It's not great, but it didn't suck.

Sorry for the repeated posts. This comment poster had some techinical difficulties.

First of all, I'm a defender of CBS's Monday night line-up. Seth MacFarlane is completely unfair to it on Family Guy. All these shows well exceed the mediocrity of Yes, Dear! and the like. Just give them a chance, and you might come out laughing.

And rather than say I've never seens these shows (because I have, unfortunately), I'll mention two shows I knew I'd hate and then did:

The Office and Grey's Anatomy (and all related shows). I saw ads and knew I'd hate them, and then I tuned in. And you know what? I was right! They suck the big one.

Why anyone considers The Office genius is beyond me. It's everything wrong with modern comedy (if you can call it comedy), and yet people I know who generally have incredible taste love it. It eats me up whenever they mention it! Yes, even the UK version. It's not charming, it's just not good writing, acting or...well, anything! This isn't what I own a TV for!

And Grey's Anatomy...that kind of explains itself. Gimme House!

Annie C Wed, May 27, 2009 at 02:05 PM EST

I also enjoy 17/18 Kids and Counting.

Annie C Wed, May 27, 2009 at 01:33 PM EST

Without watching a single episode, I KNOW I HATE Psych, The Little Couple, and Table for 12.

I LOVE Monk, Little People Big World, and Jon & Kate Plus 8, What Not to Wear, and Survivor!

JoAnn Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 09:44 PM EST

PSYCH is completely awesome!! Right from the beginning you can't stop laughing. And the references are sic! You should really watch it before you decide if you like it or not.

Joanne Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

I love the show, but just about all USA ads get annoying after an hour.

The show I hate the most... hmm... I really can't think of any right now, I've been too busy to watch TV... Umm... I'd have to just say any Disney show, especially Hannah Montana.

Seamus Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

Psych is a trite comedy on par w/a Garfield comic in terms of funniness.

...i.e., it ain't really funny...more cutesy-ish.

Charlie Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

This is so crazy because this show previews have been getting on my nerves so much that i actually googled it on the web to see if people felt the same! I never saw this show before but from the previews i hate it so much, it looks so stupid and pointless and the actors look so ridiculous in the previews! Your not wrong for judging! i feel the same way

Logan Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

The show i hate the most is the hills. i dont want to watch a show about snobby, spoiled teenaged brats. they have drama about nothing like "oh my boyfriend only got me a $3000 ring, you think he doesn't like me.

lana Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Dude, Psych is totally awesome. I know that they promos CAN be a little weird, but honestly, it's an amazing show. It doesn't take itself seriously, but it's not corny or lame. Don't judge a show by its promos.

Thu, Dec 27, 2007 at 05:37 PM EST

Psych is awesome. The popculture references are great. Add my vote to American Idol

Stacie Mon, Nov 5, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

I hate the hills and all the snobby brats on the show. They are worthless and why on earth are they on T.V. Bunch of trendy rich brats, that have nothing to do but have drama about nothing. god this show makes me sick.

Mel Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

'Two and a Half Men' or whatever it's called. It looks to be in the same vein as 'Yes Dear' a show I suffered through because my mother liked it. Like Chinese torture.

CJ Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 02:22 AM EST

This may be an old blog, but I can't leave without adding "Law & Order" (in any derivitive).

monica Tue, Sep 11, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

any reality show and viva laughlin

Tue, Sep 11, 2007 at 12:07 AM EST

Greys anatomy---dont know why people seem to enjoy watching horny old doctors bang younger docs...anything from MTV..the hills omG and Super sweet sixteen they all need a good kick in the a#@...send them to Tijuana for a few days and that'll straighten them out...btw...the creator of The OC owes me 20 points that he took from my IQ...long overdue since the pilot...I love Psych!..totally miss Gilmore Girls..at least the first 4 seasons..

no1fromnowhere Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:34 PM EST

American Idol. Avoid it like the plague.

Henry Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

Would like to add The Bill Engvall Show (been there, seen that) and House of Payne (see previous comment for The Bill Engvall Show). If I'm not laughing at a single joke in the promo, it's got problems. And, for some annoying gorram reason, Engvall PAUSES the middle of a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond to plug his new show. What the heck is that?!

Maria Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

I refuse to watch Grey's Anatomy and Desparate Housewives. Also, I will not watch Private Practice. To me they are just so stupid and serve no point other than to aggrevate me.

Henry Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

Cavemen from this coming season. Usually any reality shows or the endless promos for Deal or No Deal.

TRACY Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

COMMERCIALS FOR SLACKER CATS MAKES ME FEEL ILL.

Balky Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

I hate "reality" shows, especially Dancing with the Stars.

Psych is actually pretty good.

Michael Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

I knew from the moment I watched the first of it's many, many promos that I would hate "Saving Grace."

Michael Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

sarah j Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:35 PM EST

"Someone has some strange ailment that no one can figure out in a 60 minute time slot...except....HOUSE!"
Never watched it, but I hate it.

SWEET Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

America's Got Talent. Psych is hilarious, Slezak.

clare-clare Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

I'm surprised Slezak! I wouldn't have expected a PSYCH bashing from you! I thoroughly love this show!!! It's utter fluff fluff! It's there for the characters' interaction and for being fun. Besides the complete awesomeness of Roday and Hill's chemistry, there is Corbin Bernsen! And "Lassie!" And the tons of pop culture references are hysterical!!! (thank you, Terrie, for quoting the "Chad Michael Murray" line!)

And I'm pretty sure I'd hate GREY'S ANATOMY. Jumping on that ship.

Josh Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

all together. man trying to make a point and i make myself look stupid!!!

Josh Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

Kudos to Lauren the Psych comment. Come on people it's basically a spoof of itself which makes it fun. Sorry there wasnt an episode where some idiot died and Katharine Heigl was crying and all of suddent that idiot is everywhere. By the way for the all things 'Wrestling', i think everyone knows that not just in the United States, but worldwide wrestling is highly-rated and if you were to combine it's ratings,it would sink Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty altoghter.

Igor Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

All shows 'wrestling'. All shows 'reality'.

Lauren Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 01:04 PM EST

Give Psych a break, it's a comedy that doesn't take itself seriously, and it's funny. The leads work well together, and its considerably better to most of what's on CBS, NBC, ABC, or Fox. As to what I avoid like the plague - reality TV shows - people willing to humiliate themselves in front of complete strangers.

Joslyn Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

Boston Legal. Have never and will never watch it, and absolutely hate it, especially for taking Emmy noms away from more deserving shows (Friday Night Lights!)

Andrea Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

Desperate Housewives -- looks hideous, and every time I even flip past it it bugs me. Oh and THE HILLS. Those kids are annoying. I will say I caught a few eps of Psych last season and it was pretty cute -- light and all that, but you know what? The world is rather grim -- light and funny can be a relief!

jolini Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

Give Psych a chance - my husband felt the same way and now he wants to watch it every week.

Jennifer Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

1. Private Pratice-old actors pretending to be young and hip (please stop with the American Eagle outfits for Tim Daly)
2. Saving Grace--Can't stand Holly Hunter
3. 2 & 1/2 Men -- Charle Sheen's dry sense of humor
4.Lost- Don't understand how these people can be on this island and still have rock hard abs w/ the 5 o'clock shadow, still be overweight, and still find time to have sex and be in love triangles.

Hoo Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

CSI

Jules Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

I've never watched 24, The Simple Life, The Office, My Name is Earl, How I Met Your Mother, The Hills, Laguna Beach, or most reality tv. I'm not really a sitcom person anymore... The only one I watch now is My Boys, and I'm actually surprised that I like that as much as I do. I LOVE Grey's Anatomy, Rescue Me, Weeds, Veronica Mars, Nip/Tuck, Project Runway and Desperate Housewives... they all make me laugh even though they're supposed to be drama's.

Heather Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

I agree with the comments below. Psych is hilarious and I was shocked to read your post. And actually, the show I know I hate without watching it is Ugly Betty so you can be shocked in return.

Stef Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

America's Got Talent spots drive me up a wall.

Josh Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

Slezak, Psych is one the best, smartly written shows on television on the network that has my favorite show WWE Monday Night RAW, which by the way is live tonight and we will find out who is Mr. McMahon's illegitamite child!!!!!. Sorry cheap plug, but the shows i cant stand without ever seeing an episode is Grey's Anatomy and for some reason the posters, the ads and just everything altogether Ugly Betty!!!! Also points go to all the Disney Channel/ Nickelodeon crap on now. Please Nick remember when you had Are You Afraid of the Dark, Pete and Pete and Kenan and Kel!!!

matthew Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 10:49 AM EST

CSI.

Simply, because its popular. If the same people who watched CSI would get off their butts and watch Veronica Mars, Arrested Development or 30 Rock... I'd return the favor to ensure CSI was renewed. But I refuse to budge until they do.

Ellie Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 10:42 AM EST

Psych is hilarious--you really need to watch this show. Its funny pop culture references, especially from the 80s, are priceless.

Mavis Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

There is no way I will ever watch Cavemen! Seriously, have the creative juices in Hollywood run out that they need to make tv shows based on semi-funny car insurance commercials!

You MUST watch Pysch, it is very funny!

julie Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 10:38 AM EST

Kid Nation, The STUPID caveman show, any "talent" related show. I usually give most new shows at least one viewing before I condemn them, but I know what I like. Psyche is GREAT!

Erin Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:57 AM EST

The commericals for "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" make me so, so happy that I've never wasted any time watching it.

Matt Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

First off, Psych is a straight up COMEDY - not a dramedy. While I'm sure James Roday's mugging in small doses may be annoying, in context, it's PURE GOLD. Psych is consistantly hilarious and it's because of the great chemistry of Roday and Hill. OT though, I don't usually hate a show without giving it a few chances. The only shows I truly hate on tv now is all CSI's. BORING. TRITE. FORMULAIC. BOO.

Lori Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

"Saving Grace". The promos are so off-putting. Especially when it was the "#1 New Hit Show" before the first episode even aired!

lj Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

i know it's off the air, but king of queens.

Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:11 AM EST

Dude, I think the tribe has spoken. You have to watch Psych, and then come back and grovel.

megan Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 09:01 AM EST

I love Psych! Makes me laugh every time. You really should give it a try. As for shows I know I'd hate, really any sitcom with a laugh track, particularly 2 1/2 Men.

Rachel K Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 07:29 AM EST

Slezak, I'm disappointed in you. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion but sheesh, I mean watch the show first before you bash it. I actually enjoy Psych. It makes me laugh; sometimes in a chuckle format and sometimes a right from the gut laugh that lasts a good thirty seconds! While I do admit Roday does preen a bit you can't go wrong with Dule Hill, whom I've been a fan of since the fantastic West Wing, and Timothy Omundson is hysterical in his role as the good but suspicious cop of Roday’s psychic abilities. But, at the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, I do refuse to watch a great deal of the reality TV Fox puts out. I remember The Swan in particular...the concept of that show was so offensive that I was infuriated about it for weeks. So, I understand where you’re coming from by filtering out bad television but give Psych a try, who knows you might actually like it!

bud Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 06:22 AM EST

Any CBS crime/murder/torture show.

Paul Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 06:11 AM EST

Grey's Anatomy. The promos made it look nothing more than Scrubs as a drama. Everything I've read about it reinforces it. Yet everyone loves it and hates Scrubs. It makes me so mad. God, i hate that show and am getting angry writing this up. I actually watched 10 minutes of the first episode, and my theory was proven correct.

I haven't seen one second of American Idol though, and I vehemently hate it too.

Laurie Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 02:42 AM EST

Friday Night Lights. When I first heard the premise, I knew I would hate it and nothing I've read since then has changed my mind one bit.

ngmv Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:24 AM EST

Oh, i forgot to mention that i love pshych the dude is hot..and its a very clever show...

ngmv Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:23 AM EST

American Idol!! I really dont get whats the big deal with it...They contestants/winners suck...I hate ryan seacrest with all my might and the loser judges....i will also like to add every cbs comedy...how i met your mother anyone...? yech

getOverYourself Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 11:49 PM EST

The shows I hated before I watched (and subsequently watched and hated even more) ... Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Sex and the City, Nip/Tuck, Sopranos, Desperate Housewives, Entourage. Basically all the "edgy" and "groundbreaking" shows that are marketed as watercooler shows. The ones that hipsters and metrosexuals have to like in order to earn their membership cards and that increasingly dominate EW's television coverage. The difference is I gave each of them a chance before I determined I hated them.

I agree with those who enjoy Psych.

Andy Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

Grey's Anatomy. I knew I'd hate it before I watched it. Then I watched half an episode and had to turn it off, and knew for sure that I hated it.

kitkat Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 11:27 PM EST

CSI Miami... i watched about a few minutes of it... and until now when I see parts of it when I channel surf, I still feel very very mad...

Andy Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 11:21 PM EST

I can 't beleive you hate Psych!!! It is soooo amussing, clever, and just darn cute. Yeah it's far fetched, but you gotta love the chemsitry between the leads Hule & Roady. You gotta check out an epdisode.

DRS Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 09:23 PM EST

Yeah...even though I think America Ferrera is really pretty there is NO WAY I will ever sit through a full hour of Ugly Betty!! The most I have watched was three minutes and I almost vomited...seriously I got nauseous....they say never say never....hah!

Psych fan Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 08:33 PM EST

You gotta love Psych- it's smart, funny, and it doesn't need sex or violence to appeal to an audience. By the way, I think any present disney sitcom/t.v. movie is pure crap.

judelah7 Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

I don't watch 2-1/2 Men because I cannot stand Charlie Sheen. I think he is one of the worst actors ever. Yuck.

Jenn67 Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

Oh, and I started watching Psych just two days ago and LOVE it. give a try Slezak. you might be surprised.

Jenn67 Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 06:01 PM EST

Any "reality" show on VH1, but now especially the Bret Michaels/Flava Flave and now Scott Baio. Please people, stop watching this crap so it will go away.

Strepsi Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

Even though I LOVE "The Amazing Race", I hate Phil's new "No Opportunity Wasted" based on promos alone. Cavemen based on concept. And I have never watched a single "Simple Life" because I will not, even inadvertently, give that entitled-acting virus Paris a single dime.

reh Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Grey's Anatomy. I loved Sandra Oh in "Sideways" and don't want to ruin my good impression of her. GA seems to be a huge waste of everything that's interesting about her.

Allison Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

In the past, I flat out REFUSED to watch sex and the city. I thought it was totally overated and I hated that everyone in my college dorm LOVED it. But after it was cancelled, I left on TBS while I was cleaning my room...and came to love it!
As for now, I hate Grey's Anatomy. It's recycled ER.

Raven_Moon Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 04:31 PM EST

Slezak, "Psych" is fantastic! I haven't seen these promos you speak of because I don't watch televised sports with the exception to the Olympic games. Give it a chance. Anyway, I'm fairly certain that I would hate "The Hills" or any show like it. It just sounds awful & shallow.

Twinkie Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Dancing with the washed up Stars...no thank you; I'd rather wax my upper lip

allyanne Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

Ghost Whisperer...anything with Jennifer Love---look at my chest---Hewitt makes me want to hurl; and I also hold a grudge against it because it replaced the wonderful, canceled too soon Joan of Arcadia

Doris Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

I have to say Ugly Betty too, since I've never watched it. And, as far as Two and a Half Men goes? I've got news for you, the show is hysterical! I never liked Charlie Sheen all that much either, but he's great on this show. Come on! I KNOW I'm not the only one out there that likes this show! I agree about the VH1 shows as well! They all suck!

w Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

Sunset tan. Pretty much all reality shows. I like Psych and I love all the pop references.

Tamara Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

Desperate Housewives. Not even my adoration of Nathan Fillion will get me to tune in.

DLM Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Basically any reality program based on the premise of how super cool it is to be rich and entitled. But if I'm being selective, I'll go with "My Super Sweet Sixteen." Never watched it, never will. Just the idea of it makes me sad for America.

Henning Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 12:28 PM EST

Monk. It just seems so lame.

bg Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

Private Practice. I resisted Grey's Anatomy for several years, tried to sit through it once. Hated it. Kate Walsh is UGLY and all the others in the new show are just has-beens trying to revive a dead career. Bottom of the barrel!

Michael Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Anything reality based just leads to the dumbing down of America. There is one show that I never wanted to watch but because of EW I gave it a try and it was still terrible...The Office. Steve Carell just isn't funny. Psych on the other hand is smart and funny.

DW Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

Psych is just as bad as you suspect, and it's all because of James Roday's mugging. I gave up on that show after two episodes because I could not stand looking at his face.

teekay Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 09:39 AM EST

I love this question! Okay, off the top of my head:
- According to Jim
- NCIS
- The Two Coreys
- October Road

Any show that involves Wayne Brady. (OK, except Whose Line Is It Anyway... but that's in SPITE of him that it's great. And before he decided his ego should expand.)

also, as low-brow as it is to admit. I like Reba, too. Worth watching just for the guy who plays her son-in-law, Van. That guy has great comic timing - always gets me laughing.

I like Psych. I would never be caught dead watching One Tree Hill though. Never seen an episode - don't really know what it's about. But I saw one promo where a high school girl went out to a bar and had a one night stand, next day she finds out that one night stand is her new teacher - what? Are you kidding me?

Also, give Ugly Betty a chance. I recently caught up with it via DVD while my husband worked a few double-shifts. But to my surprise, my husband, who's very masculine, really started to enjoy it. That cliff hanger really left us breathless.

Reba. Just watching a commercial for that show makes me want to throw up for the sickly, not-funny-at-all humor.

i used to hate Grey's Anatomy on principle. then i saw an episode, and decided it was good, not perfect, but worth watching. i used to judge stuff without trying it too, but i gotta say i'm a little disappointed with this post. open up your minds a bit people and try something before you decided to hate it just because of the people who like it or what you think it is.

Um, every stupid reality and "dating" (read: hooking up for the cameras) shows on MTV. I remember when they actually focused on everything music, now it's just SkankTV.

I'm surprised no one has said Hannah Montana. Stupidest show ever. And that's what we're exposing our children to. What a shame...

This is a post about shows you know you hate that you HAVEN'T seen, not shows you hate that you've watched
