Mini TV Watch: 'Prison Break' (Season 3, episode 1)

Sep 18, 2007, 04:34 PM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Categories: 'Prison Break', Mini TV Watch

Prison_l First off, what was all that pre-premiere critical hoo-hah about Prison Break "improving" this season by sending Michael & Co. back to the slammer? I dug last year's men-on-the-run in every-which-way-but-win setup.  Sucks that Lincoln's lawyer babe Veronica had to get clipped in episode 1 (no double dates with Mike and Sara), but her goody-goodness was dead weight. Those dudes were in prison. With T-Bag. They were pawns in a hoax orchestrated by the vice president and Veronica was still angling for a reprieve.  Who wasn't chuffed to see her screen time go to emotionally conflicted, drug-addicted, altogether cooler Sara?  The good doctor always came through in the pinch.  Season 2 trimmed Break's fat (Veronica, Abruzzi, C-Note), revealing a streamlined, if old-school, conspiracy thriller (a shady group of financial corporations known simply as the Company runs the country) and a slick game of cat-and-mouse pitting brainiac fugitive Michael against FBI genius Mahone (an employee of said group).  Now through machinations of the Company, the pair, along with T-Bag and Bellick, are trapped in a Panama City prison called Sona.

And yeah, last night's episode hinted at a pretty thrilling season to come.  For instance:

1. Prison Break: Panama City is rough.  Remember the jail-house riots from season 1? Child’s play.  It's like 28 Days Later in there, everyday, complete with cannibalism (Bellick to inmate: "Mmmmm…chicken") and rotting corpses (inmate to Bellick: "That’s not chicken").  And the only way to get out is in a body bag.  Or in the stomach of someone in the body bag.

2. Sona is run by Bunny Colvin, aka The Wire's Robert Wisdom, but without the cuddly cop thing he had going on in that show.  Here he's called Lechero and he makes yoga — which he practices while watching his flat-screen TV (in a prison, so you know he's got pull) — scary.

3. New Hamsterdam it ain't.  Which brings me back to 28 Days Later and Michael.  One of Lechero's unbreakable prison rules mandates that when inmates have a beef with each other, they fight it out — to the death.  Maybe it was the rain.  Maybe it was his shaved head.  But when Michael got roped into one such face-off, I expected — no, hoped — for him to go all Cillian Murphy at the end of Days and kill his opponent by pushing his thumbs through the guy's eyes.  He chickened out (saved only by Mahone's FBI ninja moves — I sense a reluctant partnership in their future…), but Michael's violent side has been brewing since Fox River (the tattoo, the guilt complex).  As T-Bag might say, You have a freak flag, Pretty, fly it.

4. There's a mysterious Australian guy living in Sona's walls. Obviously, he's self-sufficient.  Obviously, Bunny would go nuts if he found him.  And obviously, he's the "James Whistler" the Company put Michael in there to break out.

5. No more mentions of how General Pad Man's labcoated lackey hinted at the end of season 2 that Michael was some sort of science experiment ("You know he's gonna break out.  It’s in his blood").  I’m not one for dropped plotlines or characters (like George Clooney’s son on ER), but I get enough of this on Lost.

6. The scratch marks on Jodi Lyn O'Keefe’s face.  You know she probably got them from a boyfriend whose cruelty has turned her into a hard-hearted criminal, but you secretly hope Sara did it when she was snatched. And when did PB become a haven for Nash Bridges’ cast (Jodi, Jeff Perry)? Next up, Don Johnson as T-Bag’s new honey.

7. Sara's potential return.  We know Sarah Wayne Callies is no longer in the cast.  But here’s to hoping she has a tearful cameo in an end-of-season reunion.  George Clooney did it when Julianna Margulies left ER.

8. Sucre's not dead.  Is it just me or whenever he yells "Maricruz!" are you reminded of Brando’s "Stella?" Don't answer that.

9. Kellerman's return. Okay, so this isn't in the episode, but need I point out that we never actually saw him die?  Come on Paul Adelstein, "everybody eats berries," you know what I’m talkng about!

Okay, all you Break fans, what did you think of Monday night's episode?

wat happened i missed someone
HELP!

Ella Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

=/ I hate to be the bringer of bad news but yeah, I heard sara isn't going to be returning to the show. They've used a body double for all her scenes. Season 3 so far has already set this up for a possibility of writing her out (I've seen first 2 eps). The guy "in sona's walls" is Australian.. although he does sound british but that's probably cos he's surrounded in americans :p The writers did say they were taking it as far as 5 seasons...with new storylines and twists.. they've done a fantastic job so far with the storylines so I think they'd still be able to keep things fresh and exciting. For those of u disappointed in another season I only have 2 things to say - seriously, if it was a simple as break out an be free... that would kinda make things boring don't u think? More a movie then a series. I mean, life after all, is anything but simple. Season 3 has greated us with some great new characters and possibilitites for new storylines. And secondly... just don't watch it? *shrugs*

i throught prison break season 2 was better that the first i mean they cant stay in a prison forever but i still wish that they ended the show wonce it hit s2 it would of had good ending but i would of missed it.Im i bit sad through about sarah going but i hope sucre is still alive lokking forward to s3

RR Sat, Sep 22, 2007 at 09:44 PM EST

Good start to the season. I was surprised they didn't give a "last time on Prison Break..." but then again, how could that be accurately summed up in 45 seconds? Too much has happened. I am stunned at the non-return of SWC and I have no idea how they're going to explain that. Maybe I'll forget if Kellerman comes back! I miss that evil-good-do-er! Also, please please please, no more Bellick in his undies!

Stef Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 10:55 PM EST

I thought this writer was pretty good. I hope that Sara comes back, especially with Veronica being killed off. Not that I liked Veronica, but I like to see some estrogen here. I am with the few who really liked season 2. I was happy that my boys were wild and free!

DanOregon Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

If this goes another year I'm guessing they'll put the brothers in Gitmo or the SuperMax prison in Colorado.

Kim Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

Wentworth Miller was a guest on Ellen Monday morning, and said the show is now being filmed in Dallas, (standing in for Panama). He will be wearing long sleeves all season because he won't be in makeup for the tattoos. I agree with an earlier post and hope that if Sara Wayne Callies does not return, then let her go down fighting, and have Michael swear vengeance for her murder.

Say it with me.. Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

TV Watch, TV Watch, TV Watch! lol..
I've been checking for days and I just stumbled upon this - please EW, bring back my TV Watch of Prison Break. How else am I supposed to start my Tuesday mornings??

Kelly Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

I liked the Season 3 premiere and of course it's unbelievable, but it's fun! I didn't know how Michael was going to get out of that fight without killing that guy...I remembered the whole labcoat/scientist thing at the end of the 2nd season so I hope they return to that at some point, as well as closure on Kellerman. Sara chose not to come back to the show after her maternity leave, so they might as well kill her off....YAY Prison Break!

Matt Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 06:49 PM EST

I've loved this show since Day 1 - I thought Season 2 was especially great. But I think the whole Sona thing is their jumping the shark moment. Its just too far fetched that they'd all end up in this dank Panamanian prison where the guards have run away and left them as their own gang-led community - and now they have to break out again. They preview new twists/turns but I just wasn't that interested by the end. I think PB is going to be facing declining ratings.

DanOregon Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

And I still find this show a bit more believable than Deal or No Deal, a show so overproduced you find yourself rooting AGAINST the players (who always seem to have a heart-tugging story and/or wear their emotions on their sleeves. When did Deal or No Deal turn into Extreme Makeover Home Edition?, only with the chance that they'd take a wrecking ball to the finished product if the family was stupid.

DanOregon Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 03:09 PM EST

Interesting premise, but the show is hanging by a thread now. The prison is very Andersonville. Are we to believe the bad guys wanted Michael and Linc to escape Fox River so they could break out some guy in SONA? I'm not buying it. Where are they shooting the show this year?
I'll stay with the show unless something better comes along.

Jackie Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

I hope their (The Company or whoever is responsible) plans for Sara don't include killing her. The only way I can see that working is if then Michael goes all Jason Bourne on their collective ass and hunts them down. Which would be cool.

John K Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

Great first episode of the new season - loved this show through the first two (actually thought the second season was better than the first) - great characters, the story moves, and it's well written. Here's to hoping Prison Break gets it's rightful spot in a real TV-Watch write-up rather than the popwatch section.

dave-o Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

the girl outside was definitely getting coded notes from the guy behind the wall. they give copies to both fighters and the one who loses delivers the note...eventually.

Margaret Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Great blog! I'd definitely like to read more of D'Arminio's thoughts on this show as the season continues.

Matt Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

I thought Bellick was eating human flesh, too! I went to the tvfodder blog. The writer spells Scofield wrong. I'd say that's a bigger offense. As for the show, why is everyone dying to have old characters comeback? What about NEW ones? Who is that girl outside the prison? I'm reading Whistler's girlfriend, but wasn't she yelling about the dead guy? Oh, and I'd bet good money that the reason Mike's not taking his shirt off is because of the tattoos. Either Wentworth doesn't want to spend hours in makeup, or it has something to do with the plot.

Chad Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

I loved it. So good and I was a huge fan of last season. In reference to your #5...I don't think Mike was ever a science emperiemtn. I figured(before anything was said about the upcoming season) that they put him in there to get someone out, and obviously that's where they're taking things now. I can't wait for more Sucre! And here's hoping for more Kellerman! But if he is dead then the man went out in style!

Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

this review was horrible, and got many things wrong (eating humans, as already mentioned) - tvfodder is so much wittier!!

http://www.tvfodder.com/prison_break/archives/2007/09/prison_break_orientacion.shtml

snarky Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:59 AM EST

I'm with Ep Sato on this one. I broke up with PB this season - although I do miss my pretty, shirtless boyz - SIGH.

Pamela Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

I thought the Prison Break premiere was great! I thoroughly enjoyed the prison drama again. Season 2 had it's moments, but Season 1 was by far the best. Here's to hoping Season 3 returns us to the show's roots!

Ronda Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:41 AM EST

Paul Adelstein is on that "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off "Private Practice" so I'm sure he's dead

melissa Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:34 AM EST

I'm glad Michael didn't kill that guy. He already has enough to feel guilty about. I wonder if Lechero was testing the relationship between Michael and Mahone, to see if Mahone would step in and kill the guy when it became necessary. I remember Lechero seeming pleased with Mahone stepping in; am I wrong?
I like the mix of pre-season-3 characters in Sona, even if it is especially repulsive in there. I wonder how the actor playing Bellick feels about a) his wardrobe and b) being dirty and gross all the time.
I hope Sara comes back at least for a tearful end-of-season reunion.

Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:18 AM EST

I came on EW.com yesterday morning looking for a TV Watch - now I've found this, but I add my voice to those asking for a full TV Watch. Come on!

Barnum Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:18 AM EST

This has been one of my favorite shows since the 1st episode, and I would miss it if it were no longer on, but...clearly if ever there was a show that had a limited life span this is it. The natural ending of the show would have been the end of S2. S1 was all about the break out. S2 (and I must disagree with you here, Dutch, I though S2 was great)(btw, nice to see you here) was all about the run to freedom/vast conspiracy/blah, blah, blah, but when Michael, Linc and hot, hot, hot Dr. Sara make it to Panama that should have been the end. Seriously, what are they going to do now, have them in prison every odd numbered season and on the run every even numbered season.
Still, I'll be watching every week. That which is entertaining and that which makes sense are not always the same thing.

Newg Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:53 AM EST

If the show won't get an official TV Watch here, there's always one at TV Guide.

http://community.tvguide.com/blog/TV-Show-Blog/Prison-Break/800057188

Cynthia Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:36 AM EST

I'm extremely annoyed that EW has dropped Prison Break from TV Watch. At least I still have TVGuide.com's Prison Break blog, though I used to like reading both last season to get 2 different perspectives. As for Sarah Wayne Callies not coming back, I hope they don't kill off the character. Either recast, or do what another PW said and bring her back for the finale.

kel Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

i didn't know sara was off the show...i thought she was pregnant but definitely returning at some point.

Michael Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:06 AM EST

I watched, mostly wondered what the hell was going on, and decided to give it 2-3 more weeks before I decide whether it stays on the schedule. Is this EW's way of telling us the show isn't going to get a real TV Watch this season?

maria Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 07:47 AM EST

Don't know what to think. PB isn't sure what it wants to be...despite its name. A prison drama or an action show. But I love the characters so I will keep watching.

3 comments:
it was rat meat, hope for more T-Bag next week, and, most importantly, FULL WATCH STATUS.

martha Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 06:24 AM EST

Kellerman probably won't come back because he's on the new show private practice on ABC. And sarah not coming back is a major disappointment.... although why did they have to kidnap the son again? I felt like the first episode was a rehashing of already-done scenes in a panama jail.

Laurie Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 01:26 AM EST

After the novelty of Wentworth's prettiness wore off about midway through the first season, I realized Kellerman was by far my favorite part of the show. I thought the pacing of the second season was much better than the first, much less draggy, but no Kellerman? Eh, not worth the bother. Somebody wake me when he gets resurrected.

Dutch Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 12:02 AM EST

On a scale of 1-10 I gave Season 1 a 9+. Season 2 plummeted to about a 4.5! No further need to restate what you all are saying, S1 was great, S2 was ridiculous and barely watchable. I'm giving S3 a shot to get back in shouting distance of S1's greatness, last nights ep. was a pretty good start, not S1 quality but definitely an improvement from S2! Big question is where do we go from here? A season in the joint and another breakout? A season mostly on the run? I think whatever it is PB needs to work things to a conclusion this season, it can still be a "Good" 3-season show! BTW the meat in question, I thought it was Rat as well. Come on Human meat!? Well this is Prison Break.....

Corinne Tue, Sep 18, 2007 at 10:18 PM EST

To Ben S.: We watch the episodes with CC on (because the baby is asleep and the tv gets too loud) and before he spoke, CC said "In an Australian accent:" So it seems he's Australian!

Corinne Tue, Sep 18, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

You're pretty dark if you're assuming they were eating people, lol! I thought he meant rats. ("That's not chicken") Pretty intriguing start to the season.

Last night's episode was great! I've enjoyed both seasons of PB, but like most thought season 1 was better that 2, so I'm glad to see the show go back to it's roots. I completely agree with you Aubry with respect to Kellerman; I'm still hoping he arranged to have that firing squad kill the driver and the guard in the backseat with him, and that it wasn't K himself that was killed. And one more thing...WHY IS THIS A MINI-TV WATCH?! IT NEEDS FULL TV-WATCH STATUS LIKE LAST SEASON! If you're with me popwatchers, post your own comments so they know how much we want this!

I'm really bent out of shape about no Sara. I started getting flashbacks to Newt on the slab in Alien 3...so happy it wasn't Sara in that morgue but instead of Sara this season we have shots of hair covering some lady's face.
T-bag actually looked right at home at Sona. Bellick looked right at home in his clear garbage bag. Maybe it's time Michael permanently shed that hoodie.
I think that dude in the cell actually fed Bellick rat meat.

Considering how much I didn't like how the season 2 finale turned out back in March, the season 3 premier surprised me. I'm actually interested to see where the writers go with this, even if this wasn't in the original game plan. Yeah, the plot's gotten extremely ridiculous, and sure, it'll never reach the season 1 level of suspense again, but at least it's still entertaining, unlike 24 season 6 (which accomplished both without being fun to watch). With that said, I say this to the writers:
PLEASE END PRISON BREAK AFTER THIS SEASON. Follow your gut like you said in March 2006 and end it with season 3 (if not 2).

P.S. To any EW editor reading this, there's a typo on #5. You said 'at the end of season 3 [of Prison Break].' It's supposed to be season 2.

MARICRUZ! lol I miss Kellerman, he was more entertaining than Mahone. Now I have to watch him be "cute" on Private Practice. I thought those scratch marks were from Sara too. She's probably dead though. But if she isn't, let's be honest what kind of life is Michael going to have now that every criminal in the world knows he can break them out if motivated properly? However, she's very resourceful--remember when she was going to be electrocuted in that tub--so maybe she's on the run...again.

I'm fairly sure the dude in Sona's walls is English, not Australian.

Pretty good premiere. Looks like it will be much better than Season2.
Which sucked sh*t.

For a show that shoulda only lasted a season or two, they keep finding ways to make it better, so my hats off to the writers

this show went from awesome to bad to awesomely bad. it's like watching michael bay movies (albeit without the explosions). you want to look away, but you just can't.

I can't watch anymore. They should have been free once they hit Panama, and the show feels like they're stretching a thin storyline two seasons longer than they needed to. Fun while it lasted, but I'm now searching for new digs on Monday.

Sucre always yelling for Maricruz reminds me of "Lost" when Michael always yelled for Walt.

Overall, solid episode. Sets up for a solid season. I'm a little dissappointed, however, that Sara won't be in this season.

Just brilliant. T-Bag makes the show-though he didn't have a lot of air time last night. This show is better than 24 by far.

I loved it. I've been a fan since the first episode and this episode did not disappoint. Can someone please tell me though why Sarah Wayne Callies is not coming back? I know she announced her pregnancy but I didn't hear anything after that.
