Snap judgment: 'Moonlight'

Sep 29, 2007, 01:37 PM | by Michael Slezak

Moonlight_l Last night, I had the most amazing experience: I time-traveled back to 1993, and spent an hour watching the series premiere of a show called Moonlight. The commercial breaks seemed to indicate I was watching the show on CBS, but I'm pretty sure it was USA or Superstation TBS, and that the show was sandwiched in between episodes of Silk Stalkings and The Outer Limits. (Be sure to look for our critic's official take in an upcoming issue of EW, that is if they possess the technology to jump backward a decade, too.)

The show followed a hella handsome vampire/private investigator named Mick St. John, played by Alex O'Loughlin, who spent much of the episode in clingy, long-sleeved, four-button tees. (Nice!) Before the action kicked in, Mick dreamed he was being interviewed for a TV news magazine, where he explained that "being a vampire sucks," but that he'd never hunt "women, children or innocents." For some reason, I couldn't shake the thought of the show's writers tacking on the scene in response to some strongly worded memo from a CBS exec demanding they "HURRY UP AND SELL THE CONCEPT BEFORE THE OPENING CREDITS!"

Anyway, the action focused on Mick trying to solve the mystery of a murdered co-ed who'd got caught up with an "ancient blood cult" that was into wearing bat-shaped pendants and chugging sweet plasma. Naturally, he couldn't crack the case without the help of a comely Web TV reporter Beth (emotional sieve Sophia Myles). But wait! Back in the day, when the reporter was just a toddler, she'd been kidnapped by Mick's blood-sucking (literally) ex-wife, Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), and Mick had to rescue the kid in a violent domestic squabble. Given their history -- Mick actually noted in voice-over that, "The last time I held [Beth] in my arms, she was only a child" -- I wonder if I'm alone in thinking it's creepy that Mick and Beth are now being paired up as potential lovers. Yeesh!

Anyhow, Moonlight is undoubtedly abysmal, from its straight-from-a-can dialogue ("Nobody walks in L.A.") to its soft-core production values (several scenes of Mick driving his convertible were laughably low-rent) to the way it sucked the life-force out of usually zesty supporting players like Alias' Kevin Weisman and Veronica Mars' Jason Dohring. And yet, at the same time, there's something oddly refreshing in the way Moonlight doesn't actually aspire to be high-quality television. It doesn't give you much in the way of compelling storylines or first-rate acting, but it doesn't ask much of you as a viewer, either. I suspect I could easily skip the next six episodes, then tune in again some freezing-dull night in November, without missing a beat. In other words, I don't want to go back and live in the early '90s, but I wouldn't mind visiting it a few times a year. Especially if that hot vampire dude is part of the equation.

RETREAD!! They should just call it Forever CSI: Vampire : )

Dreamer Sun, Mar 2, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

This show has improved SO much over this first season. I hope all the people who left negative comments about the show, have since gone back to watch the ones they've missed.
I wasn't going to watch after the first one but stuck with it. Thank GOD I DID! I am SO into this show and MickBeth. Please watch when it returns on the 25th April. We NEED a second season!!

Liz Sat, Mar 1, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

This show is not Angel or any other Vamp show so stop comparing it. It's it's own venue and it's a good one. I watched Angel and do not think it's as good as Moonlight. I love the story and I love the cast. I think Alex O'Loughlin is under used in Television but I'm glad he's here to look at every week. I can hardly wait to see a movie with him in the lead character but want him to do Moonlight too. Sophia Myles is great as Beth, pretty, talented and watchable as the love interest. Hey, there's no incest like situation going here, he's not her dad just her protector. Don't make it what it ain't.

Beth Werrell Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 12:27 AM EST

Try a little Moonlight again...it's gotten progressively better, and now it's my addiction! I can't get enough of Alex O'Loughlin, either! He's vamp-a-licious!

Dee Triebe Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

Moonlight is completely addictive. Alex O'Loughlin's Mick St. John is delicious. I love the entire cast, and each week the story lines get better and better. After only a few episodes, I am hooked.

Cris Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 12:32 AM EST

I hope Moonlight will get a long run.
The ideas, writing and acting are a pleasure. Something different and great new faces. They all do a great job. Alex is so.............!! It's
a great cast. They play well together. I love it.

Moonlight is great, fun, entertaining and romantic.
Alex O'loughlin is HOT, cute, handsome
and a good actor.

I missed the episode on Oct 26th. I had to work the whole weekend (inventory). My husband caught part of it and filled me in. After watching on Nov 2nd, I have to say the writing is much improved! I have a habit of conversing with people I’ve never met while I’m out dinning, shopping, etc, and I’ve recommended the show to several others. It amazes me how many people get excited to here about this type of show, and they have no idea what’s new on TV. When asked how I know what’s out there…I say EW.com!

Kandyegirl Wed, Nov 7, 2007 at 03:32 AM EST

Hi all ~

Moonlight has quickly become our favorite TV show! When I first heard about it and all the behind the scenes drama, I was not sure what to think. However, my vamp fixation meant that I had to check it out. :)

The pilot episode was definitely not perfect. Alex O'Loughlin's performance (We liked him on another fave show, The Shield) as Mick made me decide to watch again. Happy that I did! Moonlight gets better and better every week. They have really hit their stride with the last few episodes ~ Fever, Arrested Development and B.C.

Friday has never been a TV night in our home. Moonlight has changed that. Now, everyone knows that our social life doesn't start up again until it is over at 9:00. They don't mind because most of them are watching it as well :)

If you only saw the pilot episode, I urge you to tune in again!

XO ~

I was also underwhelmed by the pilot and the next episode but the "reveal" at the end of ep 2 where the reporter finds out he's a vampire totally turned it around for me. I expected that to be dragged out until the season finale, but changing the equation piqued my interest. Since then I've been loving it. If you only saw the pilot give it another chance--it definitely took a couple of episodes to find a groove but it's rocking now and has become my favorite new series by far.

wendy Sun, Oct 28, 2007 at 10:11 PM EST

I tuned in because of Jason Dohring and was completely unimpressed by his performance. But instantly became enamored by Alex O' Loughlin. The acting overall is much better than others are giving credit. Some aspects are cheesy, but improving. Hopefully this show gets a chance to find its feet. This is the first time in many, many years I've had any interest in Friday night tv.

Sarah Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

Moonlight caught my interest I'll admit. Though it could be better... I didn't like the fact that she found out he was a vampire in the second episode... I think they're rushing the plot too much. It has so much potential to be a good show it's just no one puts any effort into it (eg. the script, the effects, the acting etc.) But regardless of all that I will be tuning into it tomorrow if I can.

pr Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

I just posted the last comment and thought I'd just add that I was a huge Buffy and Angel fan, but there's just something about this guy. Wow!!

Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

Well, I for one think Alex O'Loughlin is the sexiest thing since.........hmmmmm, since almost anyone! I like his style!!!!!

Judalee Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

I love Moonlight, and so does my husband. I wish there were more programs on that based on this genre.
As for the writing, I hope it improves just so others will take a closer look.
I love to read. It is amazing how many novels are out there about vampires, werewolves, and many other supernatural beings. The characters all live and interact with humans. Most are highly action packed filled with hot romance. They are big sellers. Maybe the writers should take a hint!

Doris Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

Moonlight's third episode was so much better than the first two, thanks to the different writers involved. Hopefully they stick around for a while because this show has potential.

Karen Sun, Oct 14, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

I love Moonlight. The writers are creating a new vampire mythology and CBS will let it unfold. Moonlight should not be compared to previous vampire themed shows. It should be appreciated as a new and different offering in the vampire genre. It has action, suspense, humor and romance. Alex and Sophia are very attractive and definitely have chemistry. I look forward to seeing their story evolve. The acting has been great and the stories engaging. Moonlight is wonderful escapism for Friday night. Moonlight is a keeper.

Ann Sat, Oct 13, 2007 at 07:09 PM EST

Oops, freudian slip? Meant to say Mick's "BEST bud".

Ann Sat, Oct 13, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

I LOVE this show! Vampire Mick is totally hot and the supporting cast is interesting (like rich tycoon bed bud/vampire). Writing could be better but I'm willing to take the ride. Got my Tivo season pass in place.

chloe Fri, Oct 12, 2007 at 11:00 PM EST

I LOVE this show! Combined with Ghost Whisperer, it makes for a great night of TV. I love it's campiness. I was also a fan of Forever Knight. I hope CBS gives it a chance to develop a following.

SJ Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

Everyone needs to stop comparing this show to all those other shows (I won't even mention their names). Can't we just be happy that there is a vampire show on a major network, in prime time? I think Alex O is stunning, subtle and funny. He could be a breakout star. Let's give him, and the show, a break.

Phoebe Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

While Moonlight may be a little campy, I actually enjoy it far more than I did other vamp movies. It's not quite as "dark" as Angel was. It's almost like a vampire version of the Big Easy. I could do without Jason Dohring, whose acting is a little too immature for my taste, but them I am an old lady at nearly 50. The rest of the team will do well once they get their chemistry going (IMHO). I look forward to the show gaining a real following, who will demand tighter plots lines and cleaner delivery of the script. It has potential.

Lauren Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 09:02 PM EST

Moonlight does seem like it is a poor mashup of Forever Knight and Angel. I'm not opposed to another vampire show but if you're going to do one, at least put some effort and real thought into it. It's a genre that can fall easily into camp if one is not careful.

Angel was so good because writers like Tim Minnear, David Greenwalt, Jeffrey Bell, Steve DeKnight and David Fury (Joss wasn't actually involved as much with Angel as he was Buffy)really crafted a believable world with definite rules and mythologies along with great characters. They really redefined what a vampire show could be.

Even Forever Knight as campy as it could be, had it's charms along with a cast that had pretty decent chemistry. And again it had definite rules and a mythology.

Jessica Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

I, like many Joss fans, was curious about this. I wondered how or if it would incorporate any of the mythology that Mr. Whedon set up on his shows. I did not expect it to steal nearly every aspect of "Angel"(which, yes, was slightly derivitive of "Forever Knight"), right down to Mick driving a black convertible! The major difference is that where Angel had great storytellers in the form of actors and writers this show has its only saving grace in the form of one Jason Dohring. His scenes were the only ones that made me sit up and take notice. Someone get him his own show...Pretty please:)

Sophia Cross Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

I agree with Slezak. I'd like to add that the one thing you can always count on with a vampire-themed show is the attractiveness of the vampires. Apparently 'ugly' and 'undead' don't go together. So the next time I tune in to Moonlight--several months from now--I'll just stare at the hot vampire P.I. and tune out the dialogue, plot, acting and so forth.

vw Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

the show is tired.might give it another go but i don't know....

I Heart AR Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

PS-Read the "Twlight" series by Stephenie Meyer!

I Heart AR Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

I admit I am caught up in the "blood-sucking" frenzie,
I was SO excited to see that Jason Dohring would still be on TV, because I was anticipating some sad times going through Veronica Mars withdrawal. Who could possibly resist that dry sardonic humor, in the role of a sexy vampire??? While I will, no doubt, be tuning in again next week, I admit reading HP7 for 15 hours felt like a MUCH shorter experience than this 48 min show.

Redhead Fangirl Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

Studio types: Get Jason Dohring his own show judging from how many of us tuned into this bad Moonlight for just him!

Lucy Blue Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Okay, I loved Joss Whedon's vamp shows, too, but let's not get carried away with all this "Joss invented the genre" stuff. He did it very, very well, and made points with it that no one else had made before. But he was heavily influenced by earlier incarnations of the vampire, from Polidori to Anne Rice to Hammer Films. Moonlight doesn't come close to being as original or innovative as anything Whedon did, and I don't think it has a prayer of being the pop art phemomenon Buffy was. But all the stuff it "steals" from Angel? Yeah, Whedon stole all that stuff from somebody else. It's not the tropes; it's what you do with them.

Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

This show is awful. It will get canceled.

Mab Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

Someone asked for a popwatch bit on Torchwood - can we get that please?

Or you know a bit from Whedon & Co on how they liked being copied, and being copied badly at that. I hope Joss is feeling a bit smug at the moment. He made this genre his own, and pretenders like Moonlight are better off being staked or according to the "new" mythology, burnt to a crisp. God knows, JD is better than this nonsense.

Scott M. Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

And who does this guy think he is, the Fonz? Aaaaayyyyyyy!

Scott M. Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

While I agree that Angel was cancelled before it's time, let's remember that it lasted far longer than even Joss Whedon expected, and suffered through many threats of cancellation. Sure. we didn't get the proper ending the show needed, but a) a new comic serioes penned by Whedon hit shelves recently, and b) the show ended a long time ago, so let's let bygones be bygones and remember the good times. Like that ep. where Angel got turned into a puppet. Ahhh. As far as this show, I was also a fan of Forever Knight, adn the reviewer is right, it doees seem like it was shot on the same soundstage at the same time. Since I only watch Ghost Whisperer for two things (and it ain't plot and character development, if you know what I mean), I doubt this will make it into the rotation, unless my netflix DVD hasn't shown up yet.

KJ Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

I found myself, like others, saying, "Whait. Angel did this already. And better."

Still, I was oddly enjoying myself. It was terrible and trashy. And I'm gonig to tune in next week.

Jen Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Slezak, a shout out to Silk Stalkings?! Well done, man! I watched that on USA when I was a kid and loved every cheesy minute.

Stephanie Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

As I suspected, my Mom watched the show and she said what I said: the show is a rip off of "Forever Knight" except this guy is a detective not cop. The lead is smoking hot though.

Lucy Blue Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 09:29 AM EST

The blogger nailed (staked?) this one. The Tiffany Network's new vampire show has repurposed so many of the narrative tropes that vamp-geeks have been playing around with in goth culture, on basic cable, and in genre fiction for so long, it feels downright cozy. It's sweet, really, sort of like when your mom admits your crazy-edgy crush is "actually kind of cute." By the time they dug out Evanescence's "My Immortal" for the poignant flashback sequence, I felt dizzy from sheer deja vu.

But here's the thing. People who have never been fans of Forever Knight or Christine Feehan or Rasputina aren't going to recognize this stuff and might enjoy it as something new. And frankly, we longtime vamp freaks have long ago proved we're likely to watch pretty much anything, at least sporadically, particularly when the lead looks this much like Gerard Butler in Dracula 2000, only with better diction. I think this thing might work. I'll certainly watch again.

MD Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 08:48 AM EST

keep the vamp and lose the girl - I might like it more

Jenny Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 07:33 AM EST

A Silk Stalkings shout out on PopWatch? Woot! My day, she is made.

Snarf Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 06:22 AM EST

Actually this is a retread of "Forever Knight" a Canadian tv series that picked up in 1993 from a failed CBS TV Pilot called "Nick Knight" that was made in 1989 that stared Rick Springfield as a Vampire turned cop that worked night shifts. Annnnnnyways...saw it and while it didn't offer anything I hadn't seen before I'll be tuning in again, as there are worse things to look at for an hour than Alex O'Loughlin.

Melissa Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 10:43 PM EST

After a little bit of research, I realized that the book I'm thinking of is called "Twilight." But that's probably a good thing - afterall, If I had a nickel for every time I said, "I wish there were more vampire themed movies and novels.." I'd be a rich girl.

Melissa Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 10:36 PM EST

Forgive my ignorance, but as a mom of two youngins my pop-culture knowledge is limited. Does this have anything to do with the recent vampire love story novels that are all the rage these days? I think the title is also Moonlight - or something to that effect...

Phil Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

I finally watched MoonLight today, and I can see where people are torn with how a show like Angel could go off the air, and then a show like this is green lit. Angel was a great show because it spun out of a already established mythos with the Buffy-verse. I do think that MoonLight has some potential, as long as CBS sticks with it. I can see how its alot "lighter" than some epsiodes of Angel, and I'm hoping the writing & stories do get better, otherwise, this is going to be a WONDERFUL companion show for Ghost Whisperer, which I've never EVER dared watch or record. And I never watched Veronic Mars, but Jason Dohring is adorable. I hope he gets much more screen time!

Melgaye Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

It's a regurgitated Forever Knight and light years from Angel. Writers, this is simple premise that's been done so many times.

It goes to show you how great Josh Whedon was..he was able to make a show like Angel both serious in episodes and comical in others. The fact that this show takes itself too serious is the problem. If they add a laugh track it would make it almost enjoyable. Then again...maybe not.

Kelsey Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 08:12 PM EST

I remeber this show... it was called Angel execpt the acting was better, so was the production, and the storylines.

Chaz Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

Just...plain...bad. Here's a tip for the writers. Read a little P.N. Elrod for someone who knows how to do a good, urban vampire story. "The Vampire Files" is in 1930's Chicago, but she nails the gritty detective side that is essential to this kind of story. As bad as "Forever Knight" could be, for the most part they didn't try to make it a badly written romance novel come to life. This show won't survive with bland writing that doesn't know if it's horror, mystery, or romance. And yeah, the stalking, I mean protective surveillance, of the kid-now-hottie is kind of icky.

DrBear Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

This show is "FOREVER NIGHT" (knight?)It's the exact same show. Same interesting premise, same low-rent sloppy execution of said premise, same bad dialogue, bad acting, bad special effects.
It's a shame really. A vampire running around solving murders and catching killers is a great idea. Why can't anyone seem to do anything with it? ThousandFacesLA.com

elora Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 02:10 AM EST

It's as if they knew I was missing Logan and said, Hey, we'll put a Logan-like character for you on our show. And we'll make him a vampire. A pale Logan-Spike hybrid is better than none at all. So I guess I have to keep watching. Heh, at least they know their demographic -- how 'bout that fan video at the end?

monica Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

yeah, um, it was bad. the flying was ridiculously lame. and the fact that he tried to change the mythology behind vampires was an extremely risky thing to do. I'm sorry. Can you hear it? Clear eyes. Full hearts. CAN'T LOSE! Friday Night Lights baby. No competition.

Todd Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 09:48 PM EST

While the return of Jason Dohring hardly makes up for a lack of new "Veronica Mars" episodes to look forward to this year, I thought it was ok. I think you got it exactly right, though, when you said that its a show you can probably check back in with in a few weeks and not miss much. I doubt it'll earn a spot on my season pass list, but on those occasional Friday nights when I'm spending the night on the couch, I can imagine tuning in and being mildly entertained for an hour. It's definitely not the best new show of the year, but at least you can say its better than "Private Practice." Yeesh.

P Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 09:01 PM EST

This show was more a ripoff of Forever night( which CBS originally aired) than angel. The only vampire show worse than this one is that one on lifetime.

tamuchi Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 08:34 PM EST

Just got a call from a friend to turn to CBS - JASON DOHRING IS ON MY TV!!! This is enough for me to keep watching (even if this show has sucked the acting life out of Logan..ahem, Jason).

Richard M. Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

How about a Popwatch item about Torchwood (BBCA Saturday 9PM). I'd like to hear your what you think, Slezak. I'm loving it.

ceej Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 06:46 PM EST

I don't get network execs. they cancel Angel and create a show just like it, but crap?

mrclean Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 05:36 PM EST

is it as good as that vampire show on Lifetime?

Carly Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

I watched the show just for Jason Dohring also. He was the only good part about the show, which made me feel like I was watching a crappier version of Angel. I mean it's L.A., a vampire detective, and he even has a blonde friend/investigator/future love interest.

Phil Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

CBS is re-airing the piolt tonight at 8pm!

Anne Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

I watched solely for Jason Dohring and I thought he was pretty good. Everything else was pretty much crap and since I don't find the lead pretty enough to keep watching and thought the idea of a romance between Mick and the woman he's been watching for the last 15 years really squicky, I won't be wasting my time in the future.

Phil Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

I'm hoping they run MoonLight on On demand, because I recorded the 2 hour season premiere of Las Vegas last night since I was out at the Shiny Toy Guns & Yellowcard concert. Apparently Sleazak didn't like the show, but as an old Buffy/vamp fan, I'm hoping it sticks around for a bit! New vampire series are def. hard to come by!

Suzanne M. Olsen Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 01:48 PM EST

Why, with all the incredible writers we have in our world, can someone NOT come up with a truly great vampire series? They remove Blade and show this??

Richard M. Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

I watched the show late last night and half my brain was asleep. Plus a vampire friend had stopped by to snack on me. So I was in the mood for a booty kicking vampire story. Moonlight made me miss Buffy all the more. Alex O'Loughlin is a good looking guy, where'd you find such a fugly photo of him?

Reid Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

"Nobody walks in LA".

Nice. They're stealing dialogue from 1982 Missing Persons songs now?
