Snap judgment: Kellie Pickler's '... A Man's Mind'

Sep 24, 2007, 11:20 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Country Y'all!, Music, Reality TV

She may have finished behind Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, and Paris Bennett during her sixth-place run on American Idol's super-competitive fifth season, but Kellie Pickler looks more and more like a winner with each track she releases from her debut disc, Small Town Girl. Pickler's third single, "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind," got a shout-out as a "Choice Cut" in the music section of this week's issue of EW, so I decided to give it a listen myself. From the opening blast of guitars to that tinkling piano line, "... A Man's Mind" is contagious fun, with cheeky lyrics ("These curtains clash with the carpet/ The color scheme is a crime/ Things that never cross a man's mind") that actually had me laughing out loud before I'd finished my first Diet Dr. Pepper of the day (no small accomplishment). So what if her ill-fated Idol rendition of "Unchained Melody" was as tuneful as test of the Emergency Broadcast System? When it comes time to leave the confines of reality TV and make a mark on the Billboard charts, personality counts — and Pickler's got it coming out her pores. But don't take my word for it. I challenge haters and fans alike to listen to the embedded version of "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind" and then give a thumbs up (or down) in the comments section below.

First of all to you people who don't get it. Shania Twain is the biggest selling country female of alltime and global icon.Nobody gives her songs, she writes her own songs and creates her own music.
She has the power and money to make music when and how she wants.
So to you people who think Shania can't get any song she wants, don't be so naive. People want Shania to sing their songs all the time because she is as big and as huge as it gets in music all over the world. But the facts are that Shania only writes and sings her own music.

Kelly Sun, Oct 14, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

I always thought that Kellie should have won! Your Great and we love you.

john andy Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 06:52 PM EST

Its sad that carries name is even mentioned.Carrie is a friend of Kellies and they respect each other so should we.Kellie is awsome and for those doubters go to you tube and type in kellie pickler and hear her first audition, weak voice, come on grow up

Otto Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 10:55 PM EST

One of Kellie's most jealous haters and biggest bashers with the most screen names talking about jealous haters and many screen names! Hilarious! Honey, you aren't fooling anyone.

Brentwood Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

Kelly's success comes as no surprise to me. Even when she was floundering singing standards and stuff on Idol, I thought "she'll never have to sing a song like that in her entire career." One thing Kelly could always do better than any of the season 5 gang was belt out a country song.

As for the tools out there saying "she'll never be a success because of {fill in the blank.}" Um-m-m----wake up, dum-dums-----she already is a success.

Dorothy to "Little S...Dorothy..whoever you are" Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:40 PM EST

Unlike you haters I don't hate Carrie or anyone. One doesn't have to "know everything about music" to know Kellie's music is up there with the best! I see how you operate. When your weak pathetic arguments and lies are shot down with facts you resort to bashing fans, thinking that will somehow make you look better. You should concede because you can't beat reality. Any Carrie fan who seeks out Kellie's boards and blogs to bash her all the time is way too obsessed with Carrie and bashing Kellie. Are you anything like Edie on Desperate Housewives because you remind me of her? I haven't seen a basher with a good attitude yet.

Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Kellie is awesome! This is such a cute song :-)

Re: whoever you is Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 09:49 PM EST

And I concede. You win. I'm finished with this stupid convo.

Little S...Dorothy..whoever you are Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 09:32 PM EST

You're attitude is still pathetic. You still need to stop the Carrie hate, and you need to stop trying to convince everyone that you know everything about music.
You have some serious issues. You're too obsessed for my taste. And you'd probably scare the pants off poor Kellie.

Little Smitty Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

As to the Unchained Melody performance, the band sucked, they are so lifeless when they performed you almost can't even hear them. Kellie gets to the climax of the song and the band is still thumbling quitely away. But that's not the first time the producers used the band to try and lessen a performance and I'm sure it won't be the last. Idol being the joke that it is has used the back up singers to hurt contestants performances, bad lighting/camera angles, turning the mics down, you name it they have done it. They demand that contestants dress a certain way, change their hairstyles and appearances, just to try and make them look bad to the viewers.

And you expect us to take the judges seriously??? They are the biggest joke of all. Like those three stooges have any credibility, their only purpose is to try and make the viewers believe contestants had a reason to be voted off when the producers send them home when contestants don't have the lowest votes. Idol is as fake as wrestling.

Little Smitty Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 04:46 PM EST

For weak vocals Kellie sure the hell blows the other Idol contestants out of the water when she sings the National Anthem, now why is that?

And why is it I can go to other fan sites like Brad Paisley's and read posts like this one "Kellie was AWESOME! Brad was ok". This was from a Brad fan who has been a member of his fan site for years (post is in the Essex Junction thread on his tour board). You think that fan found Kellie's vocals weak? I've read 100's of posts on Kellie's boards from fans of other singers, including Carrie, who have said they were amazed at Kellie's vocal talent. Their opinion speaks alot louder than some pathetic jealous Carrie fan like yourself who has no life other than to post under many names trying to diss Kellie in hopes someone actually believes your sorry ass drivel.
I just heard a live performance that Kellie did of Independence Day, she kicked Carrie's ass to the curb with her version. That's why Simon Fuller/Joe Galante/SonyBMG/19/BNA signed Kellie.

to Little Smitty Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Yeah, her performance was as weak as the judges said it was back then. The band was 'boring'?? DUH! Her performance was 'boring'. The band members are pros!
Kellie is sweet, I like her, but I'm sorry, she'll never be in the big leagues because of her voice. I'm sure she'd humbly tell you that herself.

Little Smitty Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

I see Carrie fans are still bored out of their mind with Miss Udderwood that they're still following around the only one who brings true excitement to country music today. Eat your hearts out Carrie fans because Snoozefest Underwood's 15 minutes that Sony/BMG bought her are about up.

As for Michael Sleazecrack and his snide remarks about Kellie's "Unchained Melody" performance I'll remind him it was 19 Recordings that came to Kellie wanting her to signed their contract, she didn't go to them, but seeing how Idol producer and 19 Recording's Simon Fuller knew the real voting totals from the show I'm not surprised. Simon and the rest of his goons obviously knew if they didn't sign her someone else would and what better way to manipulate Kellie's sales and promotion and try and make it look like she is "lesser than" some of the other Idol clients they are pushing.

Here is Kellie's Unchained Melody performance.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cBHReafFYhE

Boring band, Kellie's great

Dorothy to mike?? Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 11:58 AM EST

LOL! I'm pathetic? Bashing is lame, pathetic, and immature. Some of you bashers are in your 20s, 30s, and 40s and you act like 14 year old children. It's time to grow up!

Dylan Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 08:12 AM EST

ENOUGH! If you like her, fine. If you don't , big whoopity doo! Go listen to what you like and I'll listen to what I like.
And the world will keep turning round and round and round.....

Nanna in North Carolina Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 02:15 AM EST

Kellie Don't be bothered by all the derogative remarks. Remember we can't please all the people all the time. You just stay as you are. Don't let anyone change you and you'll be the top on many peoples list. Always remember to give the Lord the credit as well as the fans for all that you receive in praise and money. My family thinks you are a fine young lady. Hope to see you soon.

KDPF Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 01:16 AM EST

I love this new song, I have Kellie's CD and every song on it is great, Kellie is here to stay!!!

JAmy to Baby Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 01:07 AM EST

ITA with ya! I think these bashers need more than a chill pill. They need to get a life. Outside of their Carrie shrine. LOL! ;) Carrie is Carrie and Kellie is Kellie. So is Reba or Martina. There's no need for comparison unless anyone is that insecured.

Baby Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 12:53 AM EST

Wow!! So many crazy people putting the girl down. Judge her on her own merits, not Carries. Take a chill pill.

mike?? Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 09:48 PM EST

you are so pathetic Dorothy

mike Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 08:05 PM EST

Sorry everyone I found this concert review and I was wrong. Her vocals are powerful.
http://ledger.southofboston.com/articles/2007/06/11/life/life02.txt

American Idol’s Kellie Pickler was a big surprise, her 30-minute set a potent combination of vocal power and charisma. The ballad ‘‘I Wonder,’’ done with just piano, was so moving it prompted a standing ovation that left Pickler, 20, in tears. She ended her set with the rockin’ kiss-off anthem, ‘‘Red High Heels,’’ which indicated she’ll be headlining before long.

Dorothy to TOTO Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

"BTW, never heard of 'idolstalker'... not my style, but maybe yours?"

Yeah riiiiiight. I've never heard of idolstalker.com until someone said Kellie was being bashed on the site by the same crazed fans of other idols who bash her on this site and everywhere else. It's funny we saw "TOTO" posting there and here just 10 days apart. Do we have 2 TOTO's going to Kellie's articles and making positive comments about Carrie while putting Kellie down? It's possible although highly unlikely.

"Ahhh Dorothy.... you are both amusing and disturbing. But I'll not bother you anymore, I must be off to my Carrie shrine in the back room."

I'm glad I amused you and I'm not surprised the facts disturb you. When my posts disturb bashers I know I'm doing something right.

mike Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

Her vocals are too weak

TOTO Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Ahhh Dorothy.... you are both amusing and disturbing. But I'll not bother you anymore, I must be off to my Carrie shrine in the back room.
BTW, never heard of 'idolstalker'... not my style, but maybe yours?
Adieu.

Dorothy to TOTO Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

Kellie has the pipes, album, concerts, and awards nominations to prove it. She also has the personality, performing, looks, and sense of humor. She's the total package. No one ever said Kellie is Martina, Reba, Faith or Carrie so why do some Carrie fans, writers, and others continue these dumb comparisons? Kellie is Kellie. Carrie is Carrie. Faith is Faith. Martina is Martina. Reba is Reba. TOTO is TOTO and probably the same TOTO who bashed Kellie on idolstalker.com. I guess that's why the site owner deleted your post there huh.

TOTO Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Whoa.... your Carrie hate and Kellie obsession is rather disturbing! It is, after all, just frivolous music we're discussing here, not life-altering important news. Ranting hour is over.....time to chill. I suggest some soothing classical. Now there's some good music!

Toto is an idiot Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

And one more thing Toto, or should I say Dodo, Carrie is no Martina, Reba, and Faith, because they have fans. They have fans because they have the pipes people love, unlike Carrie, which is why they fill concert arena's with tens of thousands of fans while Carrie never could because people weren't impressed with her or her pipes. That's why so many of Brads concerts last year went half empty, because he chose this loser as his opening act. It's no surprise that this year Brad chose Kellie as one of his opening acts, because he wanted those seats filled this time and filled they were, to the point where he was selling out left and right selling over twice as many tickets as he did last year.

That's the real reason Carrie didn't tour this year, it's because nobody wasn't going to pay to see this boring act, it wasn't because she was "working on her album" like her and her people tried to imply.

Carrie's 15 minutes are almost up. She never had what it takes and never will.

Toto is an idiot Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

It's funny how country music fans don't seem to care about Carrie, her music, or her "pipes". Carrie hasn't been in the Top 10 searched artist's over at gactv.com in months even though she has a new song and video out along with a new album coming out, that's because nobody cares what she is doing.

The same over at CMT.com, Carrie's videos have lost 17 out of the last 18 Power Picks she was included in, that's because country music fans would rather watch someone elses video than hers.

The same with Carrie's myspace, she hardly has anyone leaving comments on her myspace, that's because nobody really cares for her or her music.

Sony/BMG might have been able to hype and overpromote this no talent hack to sell a few Cds but after everyone heard the Cd they obviously weren't impressed. The only thing I see Carrie fans try to brag about are those few things a few suits control, sales, awards, charts, but when it comes to fans Carrie is nothing but a loser. See how long that last.

TOTO Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 09:12 AM EST

So I'm not allowed an opinion?? Sorry but this song does nothing for me. If it's good for you, then great. Frankly I liked the high heels song a lot more. And you all need to lighten up when someone dares criticize Ms. Pickler's talents. She's ok, but she's no Martina, Reba, Faith or as of late Carrie. Those gals all have pipes and the awards to prove it.

Dorothy to TOTO Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 08:03 AM EST

Wake up, you're not in Kansas anymore!

What are all you bashers missing, a heart or a brain? Maybe it's time to take a trip to see the wizard!

JAmy Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 11:58 PM EST

Haha! Every time Kellie is mentioned, you would be sure Carrie will be mentioned to put Kellie down. This is getting old. Carrie has so many awards, now why would her fans even take a few mins of their precious time to flaunt it in Kellie's face. Give it up. Now that's not making Carrie look good at all. ;)

TOTO Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 10:40 PM EST

One word about the song - yawn.

Selachimorpha Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 08:48 PM EST

Why is it that every blog about Kellie draws a few jealous Carrie fans bashing Kellie? Since Carrie is so great, why even bother? What are you worried about?

red Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

Enough about Carrie. This is about Kellie's new song. She does a great job with this song. Fun and upbeat. But then again she does great with everything she sings. She is a great upcoming singer who will be here for a long time. Love it.

BB Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 04:54 PM EST

Whoa, people! This blog is about Pickler not Underwood. But since yer on the subject, it has to be clarified that Underwood has won every major award there is in the music industry, whereas Kellie has not. Fact is fact.
As for this particular song, nothing to get excited about.

Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

Carrie's voice soars?, shrills is more like it, and judging by how much they machined her vocals on her new single I don't even know why they bothered with a second album seeing how there are more talented woman in country music today. I'm glad Kellie doesn't have to have her vocals machined when she records but then as beautiful as she sounds live she doesn't need to. Then I'm sure that explains why Kellie's concert schedule has been booked all year, because music fans like what they hear, unlike Carrie who only could get a handful of offers this year for her mediocre talents. But seeing how clueless you are to Kellie's chest I shouldn't be surprised your as clueless in the rest of your opinions.

JAmy Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 10:56 AM EST

Woah! Cant believe some of the comments. But hey, no worries, Kellie's definitely going to be around for a long long time. Watch out guys, when someone's got talent, looks, personality and stage presence - the total package, u know she's gonna rock! ;)

Yo: Dr. Evil Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 08:49 AM EST

It's obvious you know nothing about the music industry and your hearing needs to be checked. Carrie Underwood's voice soars over the mediocrity of Picklers. It's as obvious as the 'enhancement' in her chest.

Dr. Evil Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 08:39 AM EST

Kellie enhanced herself??? What did she enhance? It obviously wasn't her chest because all her recent photos show her chest to be the same size as it was during Season 5 on Idol. I think your tripping dude.

As for the person who commented that she is no Carrie Underwood, thank god for that because it's bad enough country music has one boresfest like that around, not to mention Kellie's album proved she is a better singer/songwriter than Carrie could even dream of being. Seeing how few concert gigs Carrie was able to get this year I wouldn't be surprised if her 15 minutes are almost up. All that hype and overpromotion might have been able to sell a few Cds for her but once the music fans actually heard the album I don't think they were impressed anymore than I was.

As for Kellie's new single, I'm sure Shania Twain and Sugarland would have loved to release this song like some of you have mentioned, but when there is a better singer like Kellie around she gets first dibs.

Me Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 06:35 AM EST

Not a fan of this music but I think she's cute. Whether she'll be around 5 years from now is another story. I just wish she hadn't 'enhanced' herself. It was totally unnecessary. She was fine just as she was.

Nancy Walker Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 01:31 AM EST

When she sung Unchained Melody, she was robotic, but her voice was not bad. The only problem I find with this song, is that no one has been able to duplicate the emotion Bobby Hatfield brought to the song.
She can sing and this song is catchy. A true country feel to it. I think she is going to go far.

Chris Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 11:15 PM EST

Sam - Good! If I want to listen to Carrie I will listen to Carrie. If I want to listen to Kellie I will listen to Kellie. No great singer wants or needs to copy another one. Carrie isn't Josh Gracin and Kellie and Bucky aren't Carrie. Carrie isn't Martina, Alison, LeAnn, or Dolly. And they don't need to prove it. Kellie is one of the most talented women in country and that's why Sony BMG chose to sign her, unlike winners and runners-up which they must sign by contract. Chris and Kellie are the only 2 they chose to sign. I don't see many other women in country getting the same great fan and media reviews for their music and concerts. I don't hear Carrie saying she loves many other songs like she did Kellie's I Wonder. Since both Carrie and Kellie have good taste in music I'm not surprised they like each other's songs.

Marvin Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 11:00 PM EST

Kellie is by far the best Singer to grace Nashville in decades. She is the
complete package, beauty, personalty, voice and stage presence. Don't know how she could improve. She deserves a lot better promotion than she is receiving. Anyway, you jeaulous haters might as well just stand down, Kellie is on her way to years of success, no matter what you. Kellie ROCKS!

Sam Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 10:49 PM EST

Just proves Carrie Underwood she ain't.
cute personality but there are so many talented women in country that haven't had nearly the exposure she has and it's a shame because they deserve it over her. IMO

Chris Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 09:02 PM EST

Also check out Kellie's other new release, her great remake of Santa Baby for the soon to be released Sony BMG album "Hear Something Country Christmas"! Kellie's singing, yes bashers, her SINGING is the BEST singing of Santa Baby ever recorded! And Kellie is the ONLY new artist on this album! Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind rocks! Kellie's entire album is one of the best ever made and almost every media publication and buyer review is highly positive. It’s also easily one of the best albums made by all Idols. Just read the reviews on Amazon.com, itunes etc. Ignore the few obvious haters and bashers who didn’t buy the CD. Every song on the album is great (rare).

Kellie's Small Town Girl is an awesome album. I knew from the first time I saw her audition on AI that she was a winner, and she has proven me right. TTNCAMM is a wonderful song, and I hope it goes to #1. I wish Kellie the best in her career!

I think kellie is the best new singer in the world i love everything about her she is just amazeing and this song is just perfact

Mack Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

I think the lyrics and the tune are perfect for Kellie, and she performs it the way it was meant to be.

I don't need for every song to be SHOUTED like some people.

This would be a great song for parties or to sing along with in the car.

I am NOT a Kellie Pickler fan, but I actually liked this song. This is way better than the first single, I couldn't stand Red High Heels.

Any way just her boobs could get a recording contract? Because then I might be inclined to listen, er, watch...

tia Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

Oh, please, the radio space is going to be filled up by any number of people with marginal talent, at least in Kellly's case she has a great personality and good entertainment skills. As for the song, it was just ah'ight for me. I preferred Red High Heels, and Carrie's Before He Cheats.

noledawg Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

I'm sorry, but I'm not a fan at all. Mindy McCready did the same shtick about a decade ago and it wasn't that good the first time. Kellie Pickler takes up radio space that could be much better served by more talented people.

NineDaves Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

Love the Providence shout out JohnnyD, but I totally disagree about Kellie. She's got personality, yes, but I'm just not into her music. A little too twangy - a little too produced - a little to bland. I'm waiting for Kellie to go away, in all seriousness.

what_it2U Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

Kellie blew it out of the water! There is no need to give it to anyone else, She did it herself!! Kellie is the whole package, voice, stage presense, personality. If you've only heard her radio releases you aint heard nuttin' yet!! You really should go and get her album..It rocks!!

furper Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

I like Kellie, she is a sweetheart and I'm glad she's doing well but she is definitely a "recording" artist, she needs all the tweaking protunes can provide because live she's fun but well - - - - - - - - - - :(

Jen Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

So funny! I'm not a country fan unless they have some cheeky humor involved. I loved it! I just hope the video matches and doesn't have a vixen-like Pickler.

movcritic Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

The writing is fun, but Kellie's voice is still just too thin for me to really dig into anything she's singing. Give it to Sugarland and it'll have the right oomph.

Hugh Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

Can't wait to see her pose for Playboy, because her "Apple Bottom" is HOT!

Ernesto Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

Pickler is great, she really made a good ole country album..hopefully country radio will play this song more..I WONDER was a great tune and it never went higher than 14 on the charts..

JohnnyD. Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 10:49 AM EST

She is the only American Idol contestant whose CD I bought, which is strange since I'm a big fan of Carrie's and Kelly's. When I first heard "Red High Heels,'' at the listening station at the Borders in Providence last February, I couldn't resist it. I was hooked and bought the entire CD and it has some good fun spunky songs. But Red High Heels is the catchiest though.

it's not too bad. she should have sung it stronger though, she doesn't have enough power or the end of sentences, kind of loses it urgency. otherwise it's pretty good, they should have given it to shania, she'd blow it out of the park.
