Snap Judgment: 'Gossip Girl'

Gossip_l Watching the premiere of Gossip Girl last night inspired me to divulge in an insider secret of my own. Ready? Here I present to you the CW network's formula for success:

(Emo Boy + Brooding Dark Horse + Beauty with Big, Mysterious Problems + Rich A--hole + Drugs + Money) x Lotsa Sex = Trash TV Gold

Q.E.D! Wait, I'm not talking about the O.C., I'm talking about Gossip Girl. If the comparisons are endless, you can thank executive producer/writer Josh Schwartz (and O.C. creator) for that. This East coast edition is even more lecherous, juicy, and ADD-friendly than its predecessor. Technology practically plays a seventh character: MySpace! Texting 24-7! Blogging! Spying tipsters like Melanie91! News travels in Manhattan's Upper East Side faster than you can say: No she dih-dint.

Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively, pictured, right, in a similar role to the one she played in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) returns to the UES after a short stay at boarding school; why she left (pregnancy?), and who she's left behind (B.F.F. Blair Waldorf, played by Leighton Meester, left, and a suicidal younger brother with an uncanny resesmblance to Aaron Carter) are the crux of Gossip Girl's blogs. Blair's become queen bee at their elite prep school in Serena's absence, and no way is she going to let S. waltz back into her life and friends. Lovelorn Nate Archibald mopes around like a neglected puppy. Meanwhile, friend/antagonist Chuck Bass' (Ed Westwick) main mission in life seems to be to smoke weed and try to "tap that a--" at all times. It'd almost be funny, if he didn't look so creepy while doing it.

For those of you who have read the books, what did you think about the addition of the parents? To me, they seemed one-note — and boring ones at that. Blair's mother was dressed exactly like Carolina Herrera during the recent Fashion Week, and former rocker Rufus Humphrey looked young enough to date Serena, not her mother. Also, the parental units are weirdly wrapped up in their own lives. Do you think they should stay in the show? Do you even care about them?

High school was hard enough, as I recall. These socialite kids are probably — OK, are — everything I wanted to be growing up: Smart, rich, and beautiful. Middle-class brother and sister Jenny and Dan Humphrey, who are so artsy that they've been relegated to Brooklyn, would agree. It's like that page in US Weekly — They're Just Like Us! But not. We can relate to these silver-spooned lemmings, but are envious of their extra, inaccessible panache. They drink dirty martinis — at the Palace. They face college dilemmas like the other seniors — but between schools like UCLA and Dartmouth. Grilled cheese? Sounds good — but only with truffle oil.

And that is why we laugh, and why we watch. Schadenfreude — which explains why TMZ and Gawker are open on my desktop right now — is addictive, as the thousands of people who read these sites and leave comments daily prove. So what if it's shamelessly shallow? When I'm sitting in my cramped Manhattan apartment, eating the previous night's takeout, and basically wishing I were far, far away, Gossip Girl is a perfect one-hour escape to my otherwise plebeian existence.

Pop Watchers, what did you think? Do you love it or hate it? Is it true to the books? Did anyone else notice that our gals' preferred nicknames — "B." and "S." — form a not-so-nice abbreviation? Do you think there are too many drugs? What's up with the token minority girlfriends — will they ever speak? And who's the fairest guy of them all? My money's on the hipster Dan (alas, I could never say no to a rock star, even if he's only the son of a forgotten one.) And, of course, make sure to check the magazine for our critic's official take on the show.

Here is a great article about Gossip Girl fashion. Check it out: http://www.collegecandy.com/buzz/13904

• Get the look! Did you know that in next Monday's CW hit show Gossip Girl, Blake chose to wear TARA's stunning golden pearl and diamond earrings? While I always thought stylists dressed the stars, Blake really is living up to the "fashionista" claim many have placed on her.

These large South Sea pearl earrings are valued at $14,945.00 and are from TARA's latest Vintage Collection, set in a rose-cut diamond wreath. A similar pair with Tahitian Pearls was previously worn on an episode last season by Kelly Rutherford, who plays Lily Van Der Woodsen, Blake Lively's mother on the show. Like mother like daughter! -TARAPearlLover :-D

Blake Lively wearing TARA earrings on next Monday's Gossip Girl. How will Blair pull off the ultimate sabotage of her "best friend?"
Blake chose to wear these earrings by TARA's Vintage Collection. See www.tarasons.com to purchase.

Yes as everyone seems to admit, they are ashamed that they watch it but can't helped but be hooked. I'm in the same boat. After reading the books on www.booksonboard.com (ebook website) I thought the show would be awful seeing as the show/movie are normally no where near as good as the books. But it is not the case for GG. Although theyre very different you can't help but be pulled into the busy lives of the upper east siders. As i said earlier I read the books and they were great too, so for anyone out there waiting for the new season to hurry up and start I suggest you read the books!. You can find GG ebooks for real cheap on www.booksonboard.com

LEAVE A MESSAGE FOR MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG, THE NEW FACE OF GOSSIP GIRL!

http://weblogs.cw11.com/news/local/morningnews/blogs/2008/04/give_us_a_question_to_ask_mich.html

daniel Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

Here we go again, funny how the show's based upon superficiality in a superficial world becomes so inexplicably popular.

Little girls flock to such falseness, There is no question to me why The suicide rate and drug use are is so high.

After you become aware of how pathetic you've been during, what should be the best time of your life. this also explains why the world is in such a horrendous state, and why so many people never grow up (why aren't the books the same as the show) These are the most compelling questions people can come up with?

How about a question like this, why are we as a society so in need of distractions of such a mindless nature?

another question: why do we find such pleasure in the destruction of others.

I just love the books, and when i heard that they were going to make a show, i was sooooo excited, but when i saw the clips on youtube, i was to put it nicely shocked
Everyone of the characters were miscast, i mean i know there's a difference between the books and the show, but i didn't know there will be such a bg difference, the character were nothing like i would imagine
First of all serena is suppose to be one of the most beautiful girls in NY, yet her character looks like shes 30,
jenny's is suppose to be a brunette, and yet she a freaking blond, couldn't thy told the actress to dye her hair?, is that too much to ask?
and then there Dan, he's suppose to be the dark moody poet, whos all scruffy, but the actor who plays him looks like he spends most of his time at the gym!

anyone know what kind of phone Nate has?

Anna Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 12:27 AM EST

I love the Gossip Girl TV show & Series.
But to tell you the truth, Josh Schwartz's The O.C. !
I'm not going to lie, the actors on the O.C. are so natural, I mean the Gossip Girl cast can act, but I like the O.C. better. :) Everyone is friends on it, and there's always a good ending, and the drama in it is way better. I think Josh is running out of ideas! I mean, Blair Wardolf and Chuck Bass (tv show) PUH-LEASE!

<3

GGLuvr Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 12:23 AM EST

Ah, I ahdore Gossip Girl!
It's awesome, the books and series!!
:) Can't wait till next episode.
Getting the book soon.

alex Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

This show is really really good. I thought that I wasnt going to like it because I read most of the books and shows or movies usually arent as good as the books, but this show is actually one of my new favorites. Although most of the things that occur in the show didnt happen in any of the books, this show is still filled with drama that keeps you wanting more.

Kelly Tue, Oct 2, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

Ok, LOVED it, but does Josh Schwartz have to include the parents? I was liking it until it was like, oh, OF COURSE the mom of the glam girl and the dad of the brooding, wrong side of the tracks guy have a history. How could they not?

Also, loved the names. Van der woodson?? Come on! LOVE the guilty pleasure of it all!

MJ Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 08:07 AM EST

i am a fan of the books and i loved this show, even though the characters of jenny and dan were miscast since in the books jenny is brunette and is not comfortable with her image and dan is a loner who is very poetic and a heavy smoker. still when you forget about these things the show was very enjoyable and i can't think of anyone else that's better to narrate as gossip girl than kristen bell :)

Jessica Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

Best part of the episode-Kristen Bell's narration. That is the only thing it has going for it. The characters have all been seen before in other crappy shows, why do we need another? I hoped the dialogue would at least be witty(given the OC's first two seasons were incredibly, surprisingly well-written) but it was pretty much the same as every other lame teen-targeted schnaltz. The CW better count it's blessings that it has ANTM(which is also sugary junk)-it's the only show they have that gets decent ratings. Shame on you, CW, for canceling VM and bringing on this schlock:(

nicolecoolie Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

um...I 34'rd the request for a tv watch on this one.
I dvr'd it (I'm an ANTM girl but thought it looked interesting, so why not?)
I LOVED IT. Total guilty pleasure crap show. Can't wait for the next ep.

Katy Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

Am I the only person that thinks nearly every character was miscast?

GeeMoney Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

This show rocks! Although I'm embarrassed to say that I watch it (I'm 29 years old), it was soooo entertaining! It reminds me of the last couple years of 90210.

GG is a great show! Not to mention, I'm defintely going to trade in my flip phone for a sidekick!

mike Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 09:29 AM EST

So all those people who swore they were done with the Cw last May with the pathetic way Veronica Mars was handled are back already.
Almost the entire CW lineup was clumped together down in the hundreds in the ratings last year. They have yet to produce a hit. They can't sucessfully promote a quality show if there lives depended on it.
But, go ahead and embrace the new Cw lineup. Just don't come crying when your new favorites are treated like crap next May.

Christa Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 09:15 AM EST

Oh my god, I loved it. I'm a 30 year old married mom with a career and have not been a "teen" in a long time, but I have an obsession with teen drama. So..I'm hooked. And, I appreciate the Kristen Bell voiceovers because I would have gone into total withdrawals without at least her voice on once a week. (Here's hoping her Heroes character lasts longer than a couple of episodes!)

veronica Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 03:59 AM EST

agreed it's a guilty pleasure. there's something really captivating about blair lively, like sweetness with substance behind it, hard to describe but i really like her onscreen...

& yes, i 33rd the requests for a tv wa tch on this show!

alex Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 12:23 AM EST

ok, is it just me or is the last name 'Meester' brilliant? i mean, her dad is Mr Meester.

Hannah Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:16 PM EST

I very much love Dan already. he's witty without being ironic, and normal without being a caricature. I'm rooting for him!

I also loved the sister/brother relationship between Dan and Jenny. realistic, sweet, awesome. and yeah - Chuck is totally creepy.

I agree, Matthew Settle (rocker Dad in this show, Lt. Speirs in past life Band of Brothers) is way too young and hot to be the Dad of two grown up kids... if you ask me. :)

SuzieC Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:42 PM EST

Why oh why did I decide to give this show a shot? I'm hooked. This is going to be my guilty pleasure this season.

Roman Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

I was all set up to despise this show with a passion and wouldn't you know it, I'm completely hooked after last night. When Veronica Mars got cancelled last May, I vowed to hate the CW for all of eternity and never lay eyes on that channel again. However, I kept hearing Kristen Bell's voice on all the promos, entreating me to check out the show. And though it's no Veronica Mars in the acting or writing departments, I think it has great potential. The snarky voiceovers are brilliant and I agree with everyone who said it's like having a piece of VM back. This show is totally guilty pleasure status but I'll definitely keep watching.

postanka Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 07:18 PM EST

TV watch please!
you know everyone who watches it gets hooked.

Kevin Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

I wish Mathew Settle, rock star Rufus, would find better roles. He is such a good actor. He's way to good to be on this show.

George Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

It was AWESOME. I never read the books, nor knew there were books. It certainly accounts for the rediculous character names. The parents storyline could get good. Keep them in.

There is a "trashy" factor this show has that 90210 didn't get until they were well out of college. But it was made up for in the heart of the storyline and the talent of the young actors. They were great.

The party factor is, lets face it, honest. Drugs and alcohol were guests at nearly every party I went to in high school, and we were middle-class midwesterners. I can only imagine how much more intense the scene would be with old, NY money.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. I just hope it doesnt turn real bad real quick, the way the OC did (but did recover well from in season 4 with the permanent addition of the awesome Taylor Townsend... but it was too late after the two prior, awful seasons).

Snarf Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

Complete and utter trash! And it hooked me dammit! I'll continue to watch but hate myself for it. Oh well...

Jackie Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 06:08 PM EST

It's no OC. Unless one of the mom's become a Julie....but that Chuck character was SO creepy that I LOOOOVED it. Hopefully it will become a little bit better...

And Kristen Bell's voice...deliciously creepy!

peach Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 05:01 PM EST

Highly adictive trash-o-rama! Loved it and I'll be tuning in next week. It goes well after top model.

Katie Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

This definitely needs a TV Watch to replace the VM TV Watch :)

mr Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

Was I watching the same show as everyone else? This show was rotten. It didn't give us anything we haven't seen before. Gossip Girl was a pathetic attempt by the CW to replace a smart show like Veronica Mars with some crappy adaptation to an already failed TV series.

Emily Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

I made fun of all my friends in high school who read the gossip girl books because I thought they were lame. I made fun of all my friends who said they were super excited about gossip girl becoming a tv show. I laughed at the previews/ tv spots. but yesterday night, after watching ANTM, I decided to leave the CW on. now i am hooked on gossip girl. definately, my new guilty pleasure.

treee Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Dan is WAY the hottest guy there!

Hoo Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

LOVED IT!!! I am hooked! Pls let it be a secret good show and get good ratings and not go all OC suckey on us!

cRAIG Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

pretty good. i'll tune in again next week...

Rosie Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

I loved this show. I didn't like The OC with its horrible acting by Mischa Barton, so I wasn't sure about this, but I was very impressed. The only problem was, I kept hearing "Veronica Mars" over and over and longing for a "V" and "L" hookup, rather than the action onscreen. Also, Blair reminded me of Alexis Bledel, so I missed Gilmore Girls, and overall I hated the CW for cancelling the two best programs ever on TV... ONCE I got past that, I realized Blake Lively was adorable (LOVED her in Accepted with the equally adorable Justin Long) and that at least hearing a Veronica-style voiceover is juicy fun. I think they could've cast a better looking kid for Dan, which is mean to say, but he's distractingly pale and I hate the shaved head. Love his dad and sister. I'd love to see Nate and Serena hookup again. Never read the books but loved the style and classy glitz of the show. Can't wait til next week. Berhaps Ms. Bell will someday appear as Gossip Girl! YES!!!

Rose Tyler Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Totally addictive TV! Love it and I don't think it's that off base. As for young un's watching it, that's what parents are for! Of course, as shown on the show, if your parents suck at their jobs then you'll be exposed to these things to one degree or other.

Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

just goes to show you that Logan Huntzberger is the most believable fictional trust-fund baby..no one on this show is believable as a snotty rich kid.

Anne Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

LOVED IT! This is my new favorite show. Chuck is awesome, although not yet as much fun as the Chuck in the books. Penn Badgley as Dan is hot -- he and Blake/Serena have crazy chemistry. However, Chase Crawford as a sweaty, scruffy (post-run) Nate is way HOT. The bitchy repartee between S & B is great. I adore's Kristin Bell's waspy, know-it-all voiceover and the constant texting. I'm keeping an open mind about the parents because Schwartz did such a great job with the older characters on the O.C.. The only disappointment was Jenny. In the books, the character has a secret romance with Nate -- so I'm hoping she becomes more interesting than just a damsel in distress. The books are so funny and tongue-in-cheek so I am hoping that this show doesn't take itself too seriously.

Eric Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

As a 24 year old man, i didn't expect to enjoy GG as much as I did. But I loved it. Can't wait for more. The only reason I tuned in was to hear Kristen Bell's snarky comments and did they deliver. Also did anyone notice the longing look that Eric gave Jenny? Hope it makes it all season.

nicole (again) Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

oh yeah, am i the only one that thinks that chuck guy looks like a gross/creepy jummy fallon??

Lesley Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

naylo- I"m pretty sure there are going to be some consequences to her drinking. I think that is part of the reason why she left town. However, I don't think there should any 13-year-olds watching this show anyway. Not one, but two attempted rapes last night?

nicole Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:53 PM EST

the suicidal brother...looks more like that weirdo Chris Crocker from youtube. But the Chris Crocker that I knew so many years ago before this weird internet fame he has now LOL

katie g Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

as a Kristen Bell devotee, I think I'd watch this show just to hear her voice.
and I totally agree with you,Kay, Bell's premium brand of snarky is perfect in representing GG
it's like a tiny snippet of veronica mars to ease my grieving soul.

Emily Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

Bad acting, bad writing, cliched plots, annoying characters...and I *loved* it. Though once Dirty Sexy Money comes on, this might get the boot. I don't think I can handle two trashy guilty pleasures in a season.

nay-lo Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

Am I the only one who found it incredibly irresponsible to be flaunting underage drinking in such an overt way? What 17 yo girl drinks dirty martinis in a hotel lobby?? Granted the actress playing her LOOKS 26, but come on! In other shows, underage drinking usually has a moral consequence (eg. Mischa Barton's character having all her problems on the OC). I think its fine for adults to get a guilty pleasure out of this, but we all know there are 13 yo's out there watching this, just waiting until they can be "cool" like that. I don't know why - it just rubbed me the wrong way on this show.

Kate Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

I was really surprised at how much I liked the show when I had previously made fun of it after just hearing the premise. I agree with the person asking what else is on at that time though.

KarenG Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

PLEASE TV Watch this show!!!!

Kirby Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

I agree, you should TV watch this!

Jaclyn Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

I thought the parents added an interesting dimention. In the cases where they were flitty or just plain bad at parenting, the kids were obviously affected by that. Rockstar Dad seemed to be the only one who was any good to his kids, and his son and daughter appeared the most "normal," as in, the least screwed-up. So not my kind of show, but it was interesting and will get me to watch next week.

looey Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

30 minutes? Was this episode special (60 mins) or was that just a typo?

Stef Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Dan and Serena together. I liked their whole happy family actually. I'll keep watching.

Samantha Scarlett Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

Seems like an interesting show and Blake Lively showed promise in the very underrated "The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants" .

Hallie Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

I Loved the show...I just thought that Jenny was not casted as well as she could have, but she was still a good actress. Dan is HOTT! I can't wait until next week for the second episode.

S Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:30 PM EST

LOVED the show. It has filled the void The OC left in my life! Please do a TV Watch on this show every week! It's definitely my guilty pleasure.

Jp Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Chuck = James Spader in Pretty In Pink! Or is it just me? And I totally noticed that "B" and "S" moment.
Its pretty good, although all of that texting cr*p might get old fast...

Kay Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

This show had some awesome background music. I watched because "Veronica Mars" is the Gossip Girl, and Kristen Bell does snarky well.

UES Girl Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

As a 30 something that lives in the UES, I loved it much more then I'd like to admit. Over dressed, openly drinking, too-old-looking girls might seem unrealistic to some, but when you see it every day, it makes GG that much better. Such a guilty pleasure. I will be secretly watching it with the blinds drawn every week. Love it!!

Rae Rae Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

tv watch this show

Mozz Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

on the CW, the only thing i watch is ANTM, and I plan to keep it that way.

Working Girl Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

LOVED it.

monique Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

That's exactly the way I feel about The OC, and even more so with Gossip Girl. Who cares if it's shallow? It's so fun. C;

roel Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

it's 1 oh freakin clock. where's the top chef love?!

AMO Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

I liked this show better than I thought, I total guilty pleasure though. But I just didn't have any desire to see kids race around wheel barrels or Grey's Anatomy spin-off. I hope that GS stays on if it's as hilarious and ludicrous as it was last night!!

Melanie Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

QED in a Popwatch post = awesome. Although that's not so much a proof you have there.
