Casting announcement of the day

Hiltonsorvino_l Normally, I'd introduce an announcement like this one with a customary serving of contextual snark, but I think this particular press release is best consumed without any foreknowledge whatsoever (which is to say, exactly as I consumed it this morning).

REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA

Principal Photography Underway On Twisted Pictures' And Lionsgate's Musical Thriller

Lionsgate announced today that Twisted Pictures commenced principal photography this week in Toronto, Canada on Repo! The Genetic Opera. Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV) is directing from a screenplay by Terrence Zdunich and Darren Smith, co-creators of the original stage production of the same name upon which the film is based.

International recording artist/performer Sarah Brightman (making her feature film debut), Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Paris Hilton (House of Wax), Bill Moseley (Halloween, The Devil’s Rejects), Paul Sorvino (The Cooler, Goodfellas), and Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) make up the production's beloved band of misfits in this incarnation.

Set in the not-so-distant future, the production tells the story of an epidemic of organ failures that devastates the planet, killing tens of millions.  As scientists feverishly make plans for a massive organ harvest program, a multi-billion dollar biotech company called GeneCo begins to manufacture salvation — for a price — offering simple payment plans to those lacking the necessary funds to purchase new body parts outright. But all financed organs are subject to default procedures, including repossession at the hand of the notorious organ repo men.

So, P-dubs, most random cast ever? And who wants odds that — as suggested by the illustrious Gary Susman — a major plot point will revolve around the repossession of Paris Hilton's vocal cords? (By the way, who could have imagined, when Hilton and Sorvino posed for this picture at the Rush Hour 3 premiere party in Hollywood two months ago, that the two would soon be sci-fi musical costars?)

Sarah Brightman is the ONLY reason that i would see this crud. I love her but can't fathom why she'd do this! A joke maybe?

Dear Osama: I surrender.

Snarf Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Shouldn't this have been under the "things that make me die inside" banner?

FLGrl Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

WHY is Sarah Brightman demeaning herself like this? She's an international star vocalist. Booo.

I won't be watching...

Paris looks good in that pic though!

EW actually wrote about this a couple of months ago.

You mean, to listen to Anthony Stewart Head, I have to listen to Paris Hilton sing? I think I just threw up a little in my mouth...

Martha Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

Holy cow, that cast...my head is exploding! The concept seems sort of cheeseball, but maybe it'll be OK if they laugh at themselves a bit along the way.

Strepsi Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 09:39 AM EST

Not random -- Brightman and Head are brilliant casting, as both are West End Musical stars. Hilton and Sorvino are both the requisite US C-list "name actors" Canadian movies always cast to get foreign distribution rights. And Hilton, although I despise her, does her job of 'buzz-maker' very well -- she showed up (read: was paid to attend) a Montreal Club anniversary this weekend and made the FRONT page of every paper in Canada. So it seems she will continue to successfully infect our Country with US-style celebutardedness.

Sounds like a good DVD Saturday afternoon affair. Are people really going to pay to see this in movie theaters?

This concept of the organ repo men's kind of trippy though...

Paris Hilton's casting was announced a month prior to RH3 being released. That's probably why the two posed together.

DUH Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

Paris was hired not for her acting and musical'talent', but her notorious talent for being the top headliner of the day. They must think people will flock to see her. It's all about business and $$. But I believe it will definately backfire.

Good to know they are casting by pulling names out of a hat. There are so many things wrong with this I'm not even going to list them.

Vicky Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 09:15 AM EST

Anthony Head, why?!?!? You're too good to be in a movie with Paris Hilton.

Dio_K Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

I know this calls for more snark than I can muster this early, but with the exception of la Hilton, this is a pretty great cast. (Random, yes, but great.)

stephen Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 09:11 AM EST

I read about this movie with Paris a few months ago. Dont know why the press release is coming out now.

GeeMoney Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 09:06 AM EST

I'm calling it now.... it's either going to be the next Gigli, or it's going straight to DVD without being released in the theater. This movie sounds corny!
