Snap judgment: Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé's new duet

Sep 28, 2007, 11:11 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Beyoncé, Music, Snap Judgment

Jt_l Even though I don't feel it myself, I kinda, sorta understand the Internet message-board vitriol that's frequently directed at both Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé. After all, in an age of fallible young celebrities, JT and Miss Knowles never seem to make a misstep — churning out hit after hit after hit, looking unfeasibly attractive pretty much all the time, and conducting their personal lives in relatively low-key, un-nauseating fashion. When are they gonna mess up already?

Well, haters, I'm sorry to tell you that "Until the End of Time," plucked from Justin's FutureSex/LoveSounds disc and remixed into a duet featuring Beyoncé, sounds like another smash. The original flavor was already a treat — a stripped-down slow jam with a gorgeously simple melody — but Beyoncé brings unexpected fire to the track. I mean, seriously, she leaves grill marks on "Until the End of Time"; don't be surprised if you start craving it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But don't take my word for it; listen to "Until the End of Time" for yourself, after the jump, and let us know if, ba-da da-da-da…you're lovin' it.

Ugh? No! But what can I say, the girl just needs to be seen every minute of the day. Justin should be glad to be standing next to her; she makes him look good. He is BoBo the clown's twin.

I'm not a Beyonce' fan, but teaming up with Timberlake not a bad duet, and I really like the song, props to them both.

SVT Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

I LOVE this song, play it all day! The lyrics and the beat are just right! Makes me think of my luv everytime I hear it!

Baby Gurl Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

i love this song and Beyonce singing in so good in this song. and i din't know it was JT singing at first.

chole Wed, Oct 3, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

he looks pretty ugly buff

ANTM Freak Wed, Oct 3, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

I still can't stand that high-pitched whiny singing voice of JT's. I just don't get it. Beyonce's voice is at least pleasant.

Debi Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

Ditto Larry (re Janet).

Martha Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 11:58 AM EST

RP, I think the Beyonce-hate stems from her omnipresence, not because she's annoying or has done anything bad. The song is pretty good, but I think Prince did that beat a whole lot better in "The Beautiful Ones."

RP Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 08:09 AM EST

I thought the hate for JT was over 1) the Superbowl incident and 2) just the way he sounds now. I wasn't aware of the hate towards Beyonce. What's she ever done to anyone?

The song is just OK to me. It's hard to say why. I don't think that anyone else singing the song would make a difference.

Stef Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 11:30 PM EST

Oh boy, grill marks. I could really go for a hot dog right now.

KT Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 09:27 PM EST

Not bad. Good 'doin' it' music :)

Max Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 07:52 PM EST

Why did he mess up a good thing? The song was perfect the way it was DAMN! Beyonce has a great voice but it has no business on this song PERIOD!

Q-A Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

This song is so boring i didn't even know it was on futuresex, which i own. I feel like i'm back to the Mariah/Boys II Men days, except, well, incredibly boring.

Dee Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

This is one of my favorite songs on Mr. Timberlake's cd. I loved the song because it sounds like Prince should be singing it. The original is the best this remix is okay they both are great. I do not understand why he felt it was needed.

Baby Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 01:31 PM EST

Justin's voice is still a painful sound to me, and good looking he is not-sorry. Beyonce is just starved for attention. Overexposure is her middle name.

Mary Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 07:51 AM EST

It was OK. Since it was JT and Beyonce, I expected it to be a lot more that just OK. I guess when the radio stations start playing it a hundred times a day, I may wind up liking it more. Either that or listen to country music.

John Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:48 PM EST

THIS SONG IS TERRIBLE! how can u call it a smash?

stephen to phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:03 PM EST

The reason I defend Beyonce over JT isn't just because of talent. They bth have it coming out of their a**holes. But, I think she's treated unfairly because she's a woman. (Yes, I'm claiming sexism). The thing is, she records songs in Spanish and gets backlash from the Latino community. she releases numerous songs at once and is deemed over-exposed. She has a fragrance and fashion line and people get sick of her.
Justin, meanile, has a restaurant, acts in movies, has a fashion line, releases numerous singles, and tries to apeal to the urban demogaphic, and he is deemed business savvy. Plus, he canceled shows recently b/c he was hung-over. If Beyonce had done that, she wouldn't seem cool like he did. Plus, he had an entire HBO special for himself and hogged airtime at the VMA's, and EW has a post saying how cool she is. Beyonce performs a song at the BET Awards, and EW has a post saying how they're sick of her. Both are talented, just not treated fairly.

stephen Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

Ok, now take a breather. lol

Jason Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

I actually find this remix rather pointless and don't think Beyonce adds anything at all. You can tell her vocals were just edited in, meaning they have no chemistry on the song.

Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

single thats going to be officially worked from BDAY. Now for Justin's story. "Summer Love" was kind of a fluke. Its whats referred to as a hold over single. It was never intended to be a video from the album, but many stations started spinning the track last March & by the time summer started around memorial day, it was a top 10 hit, with NO video to support it. At the time, "Until The End Of Time' started going for airplay on Urban stations, with the idea they would work that song there & work "Lovestoned" to pop stations, since there was very litle chance Urban stations would support a dance track like "Lovestoned".

DCBaxter Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

this song bored me to tears.

Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:30 PM EST

So with that being said, when was the last time, multiple WHITE artists had TRUE hits on the Urban & hip-hop charts, let alone simluttaneously?? ITS BEEN A WHILE, TRUST ME. So with that being said, alot of urban stations started playing many of the cuts off BDAY since they weren't going to be playing any other showtuns off the DreamGirls soundtrack other than the J.Hud showstopper. Than of course "Irreplaceable" turned into this monster hit, and then Beyonce started to come up with the idea to re-release the disc with all those Spanish tracks & the duet with Shakira in order to break onto the Latin charts. Again, a savy business move. Now, with all the videos shot for just about EVERY track on the newly re-released cd, it provided visuals for some album cuts that never would have seen airplay, but Columbia worked "GET ME BODIED" to Urban radio, where it was a Top 10 hit, but failed to get ANY pop sirplay, even with a Timbaland remix featuring Fabolous! As far as I know, thats the last

Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

Stephen, I tried explaining this to you a few weeks ago when I was going on & on about the JT concert on HBO. yes, BDAY was a big seller for Beyonce last year, I'm not denying that, but after the tepid response at pop radio to both "DEJA VU" & "RING THE ALARM", her record label was a tad bit worried, esp. if you remember that a year ago, both the JT & Fergie albums were out & had huge radio hits working for them, whereas Beyonce was ONLY getting airplay on Urban & hip-hop stations, due to the predominant urban leaning singles. Until "Irreplaceable" started gaining speed, Columbia was doubtful that BDAy would be a big seller, since at that point the album was out for 2 months and they were already on a 3rd single! For a "superstar" artist, no one will EVER admit that, but that spells TROUBLE, real quick! And not to be outdone, you'll remember that hip-hop stations at that point also started to support both JT's "Sexyback" & "My Love", AND Fergie's "London Bridge". More after the break..

stephen to phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

Obviously you are someone in the music business, so can you explain to me why some artists release numerous singles at a time? JT and B have done it recenly, she with a whole bunch from B'Day, and him with "Summer Love" "Lovestoned" and now this song. Both released them before previous songs could top the charts. Anyway, I knew they would collaborate some day. Both had one of last year's biggest selling albums. It was only a matter of time.

t-fal Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

I'm not feeling it, but I'm with "Having a '90s Flashback", i"m not the target market. *Sigh* it's sad that at 28 I feel too old for most of the music on the radio. I just bought Jill Scott's cd - it is banging!

Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

I like it! Very price-ish, but then, so is half of Justin's album.

Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

Its no surprise that Beyonce & Justin recorded this duet. They needed a BIG finish to a stellar year for both. Besides, If this becomes the smash everyone already knos its going to be, it'll cap off a banner year for both, and will more than likely create a perfect center-piece for them to perform at the Grammy Awards in Feb. With the MTV VMAs already passed, its the only show that would allow this one off live performance of this track. The track should also help Justin reach the top of the Urban & Hip-Hop chart on the Billboard charts. "Lovestoned" is still climbing the Hot 100 and has been stuck in the Top 20, but this new remix will be the perfect pop follow-up once it goes to #1 on the Urban charts. You can't stop this guy! he's not only a genius, but he's also business savy as well. I'm only wondering will his record label try for a 7th single after "Until The End of Time" fades? His album is STILL selling a year later, props to him and Fergie as well for pulling that off!

Kira Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:40 PM EST

I actually kind of hate Beyonce on this track. Not because she sounds bad, she doesn't. But I've been a fan of the original since Justin Timberlake performed it at his club show last year. I listen to it almost everyday. It's such a brilliant ballad, I hate that she's getting attached herself to a song that was beautiful and soulful all on its own.

Matt Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

Looks like it could be good. Let's face it, anything that has Justin Timberlake and Beyonce slapped on it is going to be good and played on every radio station. You can find out more celebrity gossip by tuning in to Celebrity Expose on My Network TV Mondays...here's a clip to the show...

I loved the original version, but the remix with Beyonce is really good too. Seriously, it makes me want to get all romantical or something.

h3ff Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:08 PM EST

Sounds like D*** in a Box - the Unwrapped Remix

Ellipsian Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

I agree completely, Jason. I like both artists a lot, never liked this song (in fact the whole last quarter or so of "FS/LS" disappoints), and the remix adds a li'l something new. Not my cup either.
I haven't heard the Reba duet yet, but I'll listen for it.

jason Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

it's ok. i'm a jt and b fan, but this is my least fave track on "FS/LS". the remix adds a little something new. not a horrible song, just not my cup. if you wanna hear a great justin song check out his duet with reba on her duets CD. now, THAT is a great song.

Geoff Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

When will this be released commercially or on iTunes? I like it.

Simon Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

It is nice, nothing groundbreaking but sweet and melodic.

Theo Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

There's nothing special about this song at all; Slezak is mental. It's a Prince rip-off by two people who don't compare 2 him.

Having a '90s Flashback Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

I guess what my niece says is true - I have so aged out of the target demographic. When I first heard the original, I was immediately taken back to my high school days (1988-1992). It reminded me of Jodeci, Ginuwine and all of the generic R&B I was so crazy about then. The remix is just derivative and makes me think of homecoming dances in the gym. That said, my niece and her friends (15yos) love it so good on JT and Beyonce for nailing the market. Ain't mad at 'em.

Cece Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

HATERS!!! I LOVE JT's orginal version and I LOVE this version, too. I love the song for it's simplicity. It doesn't need a whole lot of extra prodution and powerhouse vocals to make it work. The lyrics do a fine job on their own. Beyonce added a nice touch of feminity to the song. And I'm proud of her restraint on the song. She has a tendency to oversing. The song is the bomb no matter who sings it because the lyrics and music are perfect. JT and Beyonce just gave it that little something extra. So stop hating.

Jasmine Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

BOOOOOOOORRRRINGG.....

pitchmeister Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

Least favorite song on the entire CD -total prince rip-off - and even worse now with Beyonce.

J Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Just had to spoil a great thing didn't you?! It was perfect on its own and B's voice, in my opinion, does not suit the feel of this song.

Larry Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

I go through cycles with my Beyonce-love and though I will never buy another JT cd (not after his cowardly ways with Janet) I usually don't turn off his music on the radio, but to me this is as generic as it comes for people who have genuine talent whether it's marketing talent or artistic talent. Yawn.

Joe C Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:06 AM EST

I'm not a fan of either one, but Justin in particular can't miss right now, so I'm sure it'll be a hit.

GOB Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

not impressed.

Gringo Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:33 AM EST

not my cup of tea, but it'll be a hit just cause of who it is.

*not saying i don't like JT or Beyonce, just not lovin' this track

Sharlin Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stephen Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:22 AM EST

I like this version much better. The original put me to sleep. Very dangerous when it's on the radio and you're driving.

yssys Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:17 AM EST

Oh God...they both look so bad in that picture...
