The best songs of the '90s

Sep 7, 2007, 08:00 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Music, Television

Hatfield_l VH1 is airing a "100 Greatest Songs of the '90s" countdown on Dec. 17, but as PopWatch reader Jason Englisbe points out, you can vote now for your top 10 choices here. Sadly, you're limited to VH1's preselected pool of tunes, which includes no more than one song by any artist. If you like any Nirvana songs besides "Smells Like Teen Spirit," any Beck songs besides "Loser," any Radiohead songs besides "Creep," any Tupac songs besides "California Love," and any country songs besides Shania Twain's "You're Still the One" and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart," then you're out of luck. Also, nothing here by such '90s stalwarts as Juliana Hatfield (pictured), Tori Amos, Pavement, Morphine, Bjork, or the Fugees (though Lauryn Hill is here). And even though this is VH1, classic-rockers who had major successes in the '90s (Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bob Dylan) aren't here either.

Here are five songs I wish were on this list:
• The Verve: "Bittersweet Symphony"
• Lemonheads: "It's a Shame About Ray"
• Teenage Fanclub: "The Concept"
• Matthew Sweet: "Divine Intervention"
• Letters to Cleo: "Here and Now"

Your turn: You can pick only '90s songs that aren't on VH1's list.

Vh1 sucks. they capitalize off the lives and work of artists and interfere with the relationship between the artist and the listener interpreting his or her work. The whole channel is a commercial.

Carrie Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

There was a lot of crap on that vh1 list. What about Sting? Hello? Fields of Gold is one of the best songs of the 90's.

VH1 doesnt know music they are a reality tv station!!!!! The people posting comments obviously have a better pulse on music!!!

Music of the 90s
(MY FAVORITES)

1. "Missing" - Everything but the Girl (Amplified Heart exceptional album)

2. "Bittersweet" - Big Head Todd and the Monsters

3. "Kiss of Life" - Sade

4. "Neon Moon" - Brooks and Dunn ( I had to put one country song on here)

5. "Wonderwall" - Oasis

6. "Far Behind" - Candlebox

7. "Laid" - James

8. "If You Could Only See" - Tonic

9. "Heres Where the Story Ends" - The Sundays

10. "Drive" - Incubus

There were so many more great songs out there in the 90s. But this sums up my picks!

Mr. T Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

Best song of the 90s was Creep by Radiohead hands down, followed by One by U2, Tender by Blur, Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis, as Live Forever by Oasis.

Ivan, your list is THE worst list I have ever seen. You're a muppet to say that's the "best of the best", that's some of the worst music I've ever heard and all of it often makes it into "terrible pop songs - top 100" lists.
Sorry man but the world hates that music, at least anyone over 12 does anyway.

Ana Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 05:12 PM EST

What about The Dance by Garth Brooks. That was huge and will be a classic for years to come.

Bob Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

Hey guys, I am starting up my own list of the Top Songs of the 1990s on my 90s music blog, http://rizzomusic.blogspot.com/

I started it just recently but Check it out!

Kristy Tue, Dec 25, 2007 at 11:56 PM EST

boredatwork, Incubus' "Wish You Were Here" came out in mid-2001, so it doesn't qualify as a '90s song.

But this list did piss me off. U2? I can't stand U2. Honestly...they are gross. And Jeff Buckley really needed to be on there. I already knew that he wouldn't have been on there, but I watched anyway with hope that he may be included somewhere

jcmorgan Tue, Dec 25, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

Bush..
how in the world are they not one there
sixteen stone,
razorblade suitcase, and others
glycerine, machinehead, comedown, little things, everthing zen, swallowed, mouth, letting the cables sleep, greedy fly, and not one of them is in there?

Rob Root Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Where's the DMB they were quit honestly the biggest band of the 90s. No way Ants Marching or Crash into me shouldnt be on there.VH1 is freaking pathetic

kate Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 11:36 PM EST

there were way too many things lacking on this list. I think we can all agree on bittersweet symphony by the verve. here are some others.
Jeff Buckley- "Last Goodbye". Amazing song. also, His version of "Hallelujah" is the most beautiful song ever, but hey if you prefer Rico Suave then thats cool.
Anythign from "The Soft Bulletin" by the Flaming Lips. I like "Race for the Prize".
Blind Melon! How could they not put "No Rain" on there??
Fatboy Slim- "Praise You". or "Weapon of Choice".
Beck also got robbed-- "Loser" should have been much higher and "Where it's at" or "Sexx Laws" should have been on there.
And of course, "Paranoid Android".
Aerosmith, "Don't wanna miss a thing"
Geto Boyz- "Damn it feels good to be a gansta" instead of that retarded song they put on by them.
Notorious B.I.G.- "Big Papa" anyone???
Green Day- "Basket Case" is awesome.
The list sucked. They only chose commercially successful songs over critics favorites

Ivan Stevenson Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

VH1 list is awful.
Best Songs of the 90's are:

1. Time To say Goodbye - S. Brightman & A.Bocceli
2. No Matter What - Boyzone
3. What's Up - 4 Non Blondes
4. Sadeness part I - Enigma
5. Wind Of Change - Scorpions
6. Back For Good - Take That
7. I Will ALwys Love You - Whitney Houston
8. Maria - Blondie
9. MMM MMM MMM - Crash Test Dummies
10. Save The Best For Last - Vanessa Williams

All songs did well in the charts and still sound so fresh. Majority of people should agree with my choice. This is simply best of the best.

Ivan - Southern Europe

Cut your hair - Pavement
Killing in the name of- RATM
Machinehead - Bush
High and Dry - Radiohead
Tyler - Toadies

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
Tori Amos - God

Dan Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 09:44 PM EST

NO BOYZ II MEN?

Vh1 is dead to me.

mbr Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 08:39 PM EST

That list is awful- I remember the show with the 80s songs and actually screaming at the tv when "Living On A Prayer" One by U2 better win or I will have another screaming fit. A lot of the songs that I would pick have already been said, but I'd like to vote for Angels by Robbie Williams, Ten Storey Love Song by The Stone Roses and Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve.

WTF Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 08:02 PM EST

VH1 doesn't even list many of the best songs by some bands... "Creep" from Radiohead? That's not even in the top-10 of just their songs from the nineties. And what about Dave Matthews!!!?!!!

Paranoid Android--Radiohead
Crash Into Me--DMB
Not Dark Yet--Dylan

Dave Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 07:57 PM EST

"Carnival" Natalie Merchant
"No More I Love You's" Annie Lennox
"Change the World" Eric Clapton
"Wide Open Spaces" Dixie Chicks
"December" Collective Soul
"Kiss From a Rose" Seal
"Tubthumping" Chumbawamba
"Run Baby Run" Sheryl Crow

ns Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 05:51 PM EST

More votes from this quarter for "A Girl Like You", "Gangsta's Paradise", and "Your Woman" (weird, weird tune). Also, Radiohead needs to be represented by something from OK Computer, Alice in Chains by something from Dirt, and Oasis should have "Supersonic" in place of "Wonderwall."

Snarf Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 05:41 PM EST

Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
Garbage - I Think I'm Paranoid
Massive Attack - Teardrop
The Cure - Burn
Filter - Take a Picture
Sarah Mclaughlin - Possession

Yolanda Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

Surprisingly, "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak was on the album Heart Shaped World, which came out in 1989. It wasn't until David Lynch used the song in 'Wild at Heart' that it became popular a few years later...so it's an 80's tune, technically. How 'bout "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" by C. Isaak? Yyeeaahh!

jay Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

No Tori Amos??? No Björk???? That's insane.

Dan Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

One more...

Catherine Wheel - Crank

Dan Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

Buffalo Tom - Taillights Fade or Porchlight
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
Matthew Sweet - Someone to Pull the Trigger
Lemonheads - Rudderless
Toad the Wet Sprocket - All I Want

Luis Silva Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

That's easy: #1 90s song? Radiohead's Paranoid Android.

TJ Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

They picked these songs because they videos. VH1 has sold out.

My Top 10 Nineties Songs:

6. Coffee And TV (Blur)
7. All Apologies (Nirvana)
8. Teen Age Riot (Sonic Youth)

Tony, Tonu, Tone - Lets Get Down and If I Had No Loot
Digable Planets - Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)

thanks to everyone for their list, mu ipod is gonna be totally awesome!!!

Celi Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

Radiohead - "Paranoid Android" - may not have been a huge hit but that's definitely a superior song. Arguments could also be made for almost anything off The Bends.
Beck - "Where It's At" or "Devil's Haircut" - again, better than "Loser"
"Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia
"Laid" by James
"F*ck and Run" or "Divorce Song" by Liz Phair
"1979" or "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins
"Birdhouse in Your Soul", "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by TMBG (although there are other songs I like more)

Geoff Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

Madonna, "Ray of Light"
Everything But the Girl, "Mirrorball"

jones Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

I agree about Matthew Sweet, but I prefer Girlfriend. Like others I would have an Annie Lennox and Tori Amos song on there as well, but it is hard for me to pick just one.

CAB Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

Sorry Denny, but Don't Speak was probably No Doubt's worst song. "Just a Girl", VH1's choice, is fine, although I prefer Spiderwebs or Sunday Morning. Other songs that are missing:

1. Sublime, What I Got, Santeria
2. Green Day, Longview (Time of your life is fine, but come on!)
3. Red Hot Chili Pepers - Give It Away
4. Sarah McLachlin - Hold On
5. Smash Mouth - Diggin Your Scene (you can blame "Alias" for this one - they used it for one of the episodes in season one)

I suppose they had to go with the Top 40 type songs

Dinosaur Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Wait ... where the heck are the Black Crowes? Where's "Hard to Handle" or "She Talks to Angels"?

Dinosaur Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

Both were mentioned, but I'll re-mention ... Len's "Steal My Sunshine" and Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You". Also, Maxi Priest's "Close to You", White Town's "Your Woman".

denny Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

Mariah Carey's Fantasy and Madonna's Ray of Light are the best singles both of them have released, NOT VH1's choices of Vision of Love and Vogue. This is also true of No Doubt's Don't Speak.
Also:
Des'ree, You Gotta Be
Boyz II Men, End of the Road
Annie Lennox, No More I Love Yous and Why
Toni Braxton, Un-break My Heart and Another Sad Love Song
Len, Steal My Sunshine
LFO, Summer Girls (...don't hurt me...)
Donna Lewis, I Love You Always Forever
Dionne Farris, I Know
Vitamin C, Smile
Chris Isaak, Wicked Game
TLC, Unpretty and No Scrubs
Del Amitri, Roll to Me
Gin Blossoms, Hey Jealousy
and (forgive me, I'm Jewish) Adam Sandler, The Chanukah Song

Andy Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

These songs just scream 90's to me; that was a good decade for music:

Fastball "The Way"
Eagle Eye Cherry "Save Tonight"
Matchbox 20 "3 AM"
Train "Meet Virgina"
Blur "Song 2"
No Doubt "Don't Speak"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Under the Bridge"
Blind Melon "No Rain"
Smashing Pumpkins "1979"
Eve 6 "Inside Out"
Natalie Imbruglia "Torn"
Green Day "Good Riddance"
Alanis Morrisette "Ironic"
Third Eye Blind "Jumper"
Tonic "If You Could Only See"
The Verve "Bittersweet Symphony"
The Wallflowers "One Headlight"
Smash Mouth "Walkin' On The Sun"
The Goo Goo Dolls "Iris"
Barenaked Ladies "One Week"
Foo Fighters "Everlong"
Oasis "Wonderwall"
Semisonic "Closing Time"

I made a mix for my work with all these songs...so naturally, they're all clean and the same, kind of, genre-wise. But these are some of my faves. Not to mention anything by Hanson (*rolls eyes*).

sarah Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

I agree with the people who said Brick by Ben Folds Five.

Kate Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Ugh the same voting method put You Give Loce a Bad Name above Photograph for the top Rock songs of the 90s or something like that. Sacrilige!

idigress Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Bonita Applebum - A Tribe Called Quest
Big Time Sensuality - Bjork
I Wanna Be Down - Brandy
What I Got - Sublime
Brick - Ben Folds Five
Father Figure - George Michael
California Love - Tupac

trigrrrcut Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

what a terrible selection:

"Summer Babe" Pavement
"Juicy" Notorious B.I.G.
"Paranoid Android" Radiohead
"Walk" Pantera
"Protection" Massive Attack

Those are just really obvious omissions. Echk, terrible.

Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

"Don't Speak" by No Doubt.

kyle Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

the list on vh1 sucks. I notice everyone is putting song 2 from blur on the list but what about coffee and TV great song and great video.

Man o Man Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:20 AM EST

Are there even 100 songs on that list? Jesus... horrible choices.

careth Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:18 AM EST

The Freshman--The Verve Pipe
I mean they played it at my senior prom like 8 times.

Elaine Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

They also left off the Counting Crows???

Oy Vay.

Elaine Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

I forgot to add Rage Against The Machine - Bulls on Parade.

Elaine Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

Here are my choices:
NIN - Head Like A Hole
Pearl Jam - Alive (better song)
DMB - Crash Into Me
Chris Issac - Wicked Game (How the hell is this song missing?)
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
Prodigy - Firestarter
Garbage - Stupid Girl
Geto Boyz - Damn it feels good to be a gansta
Nirvana - Lithium
Outkast - Rosa Parks or BOB
No Doubt - Sunday Morning
Green Day - When I Come Around
Tori Amos - Crucify
Ace of Base - All That She Wants
Alice In Chains - Rooster
Gin Blossoms - Allison Road
Snoop - Gin & Juice
Luscious Jackson - Naked Eye
Naughty By Nature - OPP
Black Crowes - She Talks To Angels
Better Than Ezra - Good
Tool - Sober

I think that is all that I will add for the moment.

Bad, bad list. I only agree with maybe 20 of the choices.
BBD - Poison
Blur - Song #2

Danna Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

I know No Doubt is on the list, but for Just a Girl? What!? Don't Speak is the BEST song of the 90's.

GeeMoney Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

Oh yeah, and Salt and Pepa's "Push It" came out in the late 80's, Catherine.

GeeMoney Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

Anything by Rage Against the Machine, especially "Bulls On Parade". Dont' forget "Finally" by Ce Ce Peniston and "Fantasy" by Mariah Carey.

D.R. Mosby Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:48 AM EST

The VH1 list is hideous - it's all one-hit wonders, schlock, overproduced nonsense and novelty songs. (Not that the 90's produced all that much great music, anyway...) But there were a few gems from this decade:

Ben Folds Five - Army
The Dismemberment Plan - The City
Fatima Mansions - Behind The Moon
XTC - River Of Orchids
Electronic - Get The Message

David Lee Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

STRATFORD ON GUY Liz Phair
TOMORROW Morrissey
TWIST IN MY SOBRIETY Tanita Tikaram
WHAT KIND OF LOVE Rodney Crowell
INDEPENDENCE DAY Martina McBride
THERE SHE GOES The La's
CANDY Iggy Pop & Kate Pierson
STAY Shakespeare's Sister
SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer
PRETEND WE'RE DEAD - L7
READY TO GO Republica
A GIRL LIKE YOU Edwyn Collins
TOUCH IT Monifah
ST. TERESA Joan Osbourne
NATURAL ONE Folk Implosion
SOMETIMES ALWAYS Jesus & Mary Chain

Ames Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

They definitely picked the wrong songs by some bands. I didn't vote for Jeremy, but would've voted for Alive, for example. But I'm satisfied with what I chose.

But to be a bit of a devil's advocate, Garth Brooks "Friends in low places" should have been on the list. He was huge, that song was huge. Whether you liked country or not, there was something about that song that was infectious.

Wilma Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:23 AM EST

In addition to some of those that have already been mentioned (excellent call on "Constant Craving"):

"I Can't Make You Love Me," Bonnie Raitt
"Mother Mother," Tracy Bonham
"I Know," Dionne Farris
"Bad Reputation," Freedy Johnston
"Fall Down," Toad the Wet Sprocket, (My So-Called Life, anyone?)
"Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" Paula Cole
"Tha Crossroads," Bone Thugs n Harmony
"If," Janet Jackson
"No One Else on Earth," Wynona Judd
"Dress," PJ Harvey
"Can't Let Go," Lucinda Williams
"You're Making Me High," Toni Braxton
"Caramel," Suzanne Vega
"Right Here," SWV
"Love Will Lead You Back," Taylor Dayne
"Night in My Veins," Pretenders
"My Sister," Juliana Hatfield
"Send Me On My Way," Rusted Root
"Stay," Shakespear's Sister
"Why" Annie Lennox
"Even Flow," Pearl Jam
"There's Your Trouble," Dixie Chicks
"Tomorrow," Silverchair
"Here's Where the Story Ends," The Sundays
"Labour of Love," Frente
"Strong Enough," Sheryl Crow
"I'd Die Without You," P.M. Dawn

Robert Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:23 AM EST

Some horrific choices there. I greatly prefer these:
Liz Phair - F*ck & Run
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Rage Against The Machine - Bombtrack (And no Rage there? Really?)
Ben Folds Five - Brick
Cake - The Distance
Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin Beats

And, that doesn't even include bands like Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, etc.

Plus, by limiting each band to 1 song, that eliminates some of the best work of REM, Beastie Boys, Beck, and many more, for Vanilla Ice and Los Del Rio. Thanks, VH1!

Silv Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:10 AM EST

Savage Garden, "Truly Madly Deeply"
Sixpence None the Richer, "Kiss Me"
Eric Clapton, "Change the World"
Smashmouth, "Walking on the Sun"
Backstreet Boys, "I'll Never Break Your Heart"

Rob Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:09 AM EST

"Brimful of Asha" by Cornershop. I actually feel proud that I came of age in an era where a song that offbeat and cool could get regular airplay on the radio.

RTA Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

"The Ghost of Tom Joad" by Springsteen from the poignant album of the same name. Listen to it on a quiet night or a rainy day and you will be taken to another world altogether.

Jakeem Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

Five I like:

1. "Cantaloop" Us3
2. "I Know" Dionne Farris
3. "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" Patty Smyth and Don Henley
4. "I Love You Always Forever" Donna Lewis
5. "Constant Craving" k.d. lang

yes yes yes Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 10:01 AM EST

I second the argument's for "Fantasy" by Mariah Carey, easily her best single of the 90's (though, her best tracks were never released)

Joe C Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

Ah, the 90's the last decade when I knew all of the songs on the top 40 every year. Here's my five, with a comment:

1) Mariah Carey Fantasy--Normally the best songs on MC's CDs are not the singles, but this was the exception. Makes me feel good every time I hear it.
2)Nirvana--All Apologies--Love the line: I wish I was like you/Easily amused. Great song.
3)Michael Jackson--Jam. Yep, at the beginning of the 90's, most people thought of Michael as a very talented if slightly wierd star. This gem is a great reminder...
4)Guns N'Roses--You Could be Mine. And at the beginning of the 90's, GNR was going to be the new Led Zep. Too bad. This was supposed to be on Appetite for Destruction, but it got pushed back. Axl really screams this one.
5)Len--Steal my Sunshine. The best guilty pleasure song of the decade; came out at the end.

gene gene Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST
