The cone of silence falls over 'Big Brother'

Aug 31, 2007, 03:20 PM | by Josh Wolk

Categories: Reality TV

Amber_l If you've been scouring the home page, looking for our usual Q&A with Amber, the latest Big Brother evictee, don't bother. We had decided in advance not to interview her because CBS said we couldn't ask about her infamous anti-Semitic comments. But don't bother looking for interviews in the next few weeks, either: yesterday the network decided that no one will be able to talk to any of the castoffs until the show is over. I know the word "integrity" was never a big part of Big Brother, either in front of or behind the cameras, but how this all went down removes any shred of integrity that might have still been left under a bed or floating around in the hot tub.

Here's our backstory: Once the evictees were going to be part of the jury, CBS had laid down serious interview restrictions: we couldn't tell evictees about the America's Player conceit, and we couldn't ask them about any events or conversations that they weren't present for, or hadn't been told about. These rules were laid down because since these losing players would be voting on the victor, it wasn't fair for them to have any inside information, and they would have to solely depend on their own experiences on which to base their vote.

Fine. Made sense. They don't want journalists affecting the outcome, just like no one gets to talk to people when they're voted off Survivor. (Granted, that show isn't happening near-live, like BB, but the same theory applies.) But then last week, CBS told us that we also weren't allowed to ask Amber about her anti-Semitic hammock rants. That didn't make sense: she was certainly present when they came out of her own freaking mouth, so it wouldn't be anything new to her. CBS' logic was that it might affect her vote. How? By cluing her into how controversial she was outside the house? I could see that upsetting her, but how could it affect her vote? She couldn't blame any potential finalists for it, since it was just her and Jameka present for the conversation. (Before Jameka was taken off the block and replaced with Jen, CBS also said we couldn't ask Jameka about Amber's comments.) Perhaps CBS was just worried that the news that America hated her — What's up with that, God? — would make her cry for the next few weeks straight, and she might not have any tears left for the finale: Amber crying (pictured) is the Big Brother money shot.

With those restrictions, we told CBS that if she was voted out, we wouldn't interview her. She stayed in the house, and this week, with her up on the block again and likely to lose, we once more said we would pass on an interview. The Associated Press made the same decision and wrote an article about CBS' silly rules. The AP piece clearly put CBS in defensive mode: late yesterday afternoon, I got an e-mail saying that no one could talk to Amber after the show. (Anyone other than Julie Chen, that is, who wouldn't know a controversial question if it was hidden in her body glitter.) But then later came a clarification from CBS: no one would be able to talk to any of the evictees until after the finale.

So that's it. No more interviews. My theory is this: CBS was backed into such a corner about Amber that it thought it could eliminate the problem by making everyone off limits. Then they can use the defense, "It's not that you can't ask Amber about being an anti-Semite; it's that you can't ask anyone about anything. Her anti-Semitism just happens to fall into the catch-all category of everything." However, since that rule was made after the controversy, it doesn't work as an excuse, it only works as a copout. Perhaps CBS was just too exhausted by the growing fallout over their upcoming reality show Kid Nation that they couldn't handle putting out two reality fires at once.

Once the show is over, CBS will be throwing everyone in the house to the dogs, by which I mean the media: everyone will be available for for interviews, with no restrictions. Even as a Jew, I feel slightly bad for Amber, as that day will prove the biggest wake-up call she's had since someone told her what "wake-up call" meant. There she'll be, assuming that as soon as she's free of the show, the phone will be ringing off the hook for her with modeling, acting, and inspirational-speaking gigs for her, and instead she'll be buffeted with questions about why she thinks the Jews are all greedy and selfish. (As a Jew, I've had my opening question lined up for weeks: "Just warning you, Amber, I may be asking you a lot of things. I'm a Jewish journalist, which means I like to hog all the answers.") I hope she's saving up those tears while in the sequester house, because I have a feeling she's going to need them for after the finale.

I cant believe cbs let Dick stay on the show Did they not consider all the female viewers? Ill watch till the end but no more BB for me ever! It was so disgusting and offensive that cbs should be ashamed.

Amber Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

LOL, festool2112! I see what you did there! ;)

no-idol Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

and I also agree with Betty's comment regarding ED. Everyone elses actions or statements are blown out of proportion, but his over the top threats and verbal abuse is inexcusable. It's not all a joke people, he's totally serious in some of that behavior. No excuse for some of the comments he made toward Jen, and I don't see how the whole a$$ r8ping throat crushing etc comments aren't qualified as threats (which would've eliminated ED from the game)

no-idol Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

There isn't an excuse for Amber's comments, but she's definitely unstable. I noticed Julie Chen avoided topics which might send her over the edge. It'll be a scary scene when her delusions are shattered. The worse part about it is I think she's just an ignorant an a result of a mindset that must've been around her growing up. She's already proven that she's a little on the dull side in intelligence. I ultimately feel bad for her and hope the CBS physchiatrists prep her for her deserved media flogging.

aymzer Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

what did Carol say about gays?

festool2112 Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

Amber should be punished in some way for her comments. Here ignorance and insensitivity are indefensible. Education would help, but her clulessness will remain. She was so way off the mark - her comments would be more appropriate for the Japs.

samuel Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

As a Jew and being around some pretty nasty Jews my whole life, Amber's comments did not offend me and were pretty close to the truth, I think. And do not forget our big noses!

Ummm Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 09:36 PM EST

Why go on live tv and bash a kind of person. That is just dumb on her part...

Also, why did no one make this big of a stink of Carol gay bashing?

Its all fun and games until someone makes fun of your minority status.

Stephen Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

Oh, and a thank you to Josh for using that picture. To the rat's nest in her hair to the saggy boobs, it cracks me up every time.

Stephen to ceejay Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

If you are referring to me, let me clarify. I do not watch the show, but did see the clip on youtube. I don't think her comments were a matter of trash reality television, but a matter of the ignorance that exists in the world, and that is why I felt the need to post. There are others commenting and just say the show sucks, and I don't want to be affiliated with them.

ceejay Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

I find it very amusing that people who "claim" that they do not watch the show, nor do they understand why others would, still seek comments about BB8 and even post their feelings..... they are obviously people with little or absolutely nothing better to do and probably, despite their disclaimers, they DO watch the game.

Mel Gibson Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 11:05 PM EST

mmmm...sexy

Simon Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

I am amazed that people still watch this show.

Hitler Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

Um, what's the problem? Is this girl available?

Amber Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

OMG you guys! That was totally taken out of context! Don't believe what you watch on T.V. I'm really a good person.

p-cook in PA Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

Great piece Josh. You rock! I can't wait to read your post-show interview of Amber. Love your opening question.

Craig Fields (West Hollywood, CA) Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

I love this article and this magazine. So funny. After finally getting to watch the infamous YouTube clip of Amber's Jewish hate speech, I see what all the hub bub is about. Her comments are so backwards and narrow minded that I would be embarrassed to come out of that house. If she was smart at all, she should not be too shocked at the backlash about to occur; but alas...

I can already hear the backpeddling and explanations occuring during and after the finale. Is it sad that I am looking forward to that more than who wins the show? Perhaps, but not as sad as how scary it is to think that Amber and her sister are only two people out of a countless many that probably still think and talk about discusting stereotypes, and pass them off as fact. We only got to see it live in this instance...

Mark Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 02:27 AM EST

I totally agree Betty.

Betty Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

I'm a Jewish female and resented Dick's remarks, verbal and physical abuse of Jen (and other women)a lot more than I resented Amber for her anti-Semitism. Amber didn't call Jewish people, as a whole, names only stated her opinion to another female in a private conversation. I'm so astonished that people approve of Dick's bad behavior but disapprove of Amber stating her feelings in a private conversation. I don't disapprove of private conversation, about race or anything else, but vicious name calling and verbal abuse is wrong. Dick should have been thrown off the show when he poured tea on Jen's head. Anyone pour anything on my head will see me in court.

Stephen Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 05:20 PM EST

I don't watch the show either but am very familiar with her tantrums/comments. (Thank you Joel McHale!). Can someone tell me what the girl she said those things to replied back?

Jason Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

Hey Marc - if you dont watch the show why are you reading articles about it and posting about it? Loser.

Jen Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 05:09 AM EST

Any thoughts as to why we haven't seen any footage of the sequester house yet?

Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 01:11 AM EST

This season has been full of bigoted & mean spirited comments against Jews, Asians, women, and homosexuals. You put 14 people into one house and "scrutinize" them 24/7, this is the end result. It's not right, however, it's a snapshot of America.

Peggy Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 01:04 AM EST

As repulsive as Amber's comments were, I was surprised by the audience's positive reaction to her on "Power of Ten." She received enthusiastic applause & a collective "awww" by the studio audience when she said she'd spend her potential winnings on her family. Given the amount of national press her anti Semitic comments received, I was expecting boos & jeers. During the first few weeks of BB, she asked Jameka to explain the Jewish faith to her. Besides being uneducated, she's an emotional mess. To "attack" her when the interviews start, is hardly the correct approach. You're not dealing with someone who has a grasp of her ignorence. She's deluded herself into thinking she can be a "motivational speaker/model." A self described "good person" who was willing to vote out her best friend (in the house), Jameka. This is one of those unfortunate situations where one truly needs to "consider the source", before retaliating.

Lene Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 10:42 PM EST

Of course, there're also the terrific comments Eric made about Dick and Daniele having an incestuous relationship (sorry for psoting again, but these people really take the cake in terms of hatefulness). Call Amber on her bigotry, but don't forget the others'. The rest of them have the brains to know better, Amber doesn't.

Jenn Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 10:23 PM EST

The problem is that Amber's comments about others were so completely ignorant. Her conversation went on for quite awhile. Even worse, she waltzes around claiming to be a "good person" not realizing that she's just as bad as everyone else. Dick hasn't walked around and said, "I'm not a jerkwad." which makes his comments not better but not so hypocritical.

Sadly, any comments you would have had for Whamber, Josh, would have been impossible for her to understand. Great piece, Josh.

MsDaisy Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 10:12 PM EST

Amber is just too dam' stupid and ignorant to feel anything but pity for her. She should do PSA's about what drugs really do to a brain.

Lene Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 09:44 PM EST

Remember Erika's comment about Jee being "just off the boat"? Or when Ivette called Kaysar a terrorist and other derogatory terms? Both got off fairly scot-free.

This season, Dick's a mysogynist jerk. Dustin and his dog. Etc. Etc. Yet, the main glee being bandied about is the expected pouncing on Amber and I actually don't think it'll be fair to her. I've seen the clip - her statements were unacceptable, yet incredibly naive and it's clear that she was just parroting her bigoted mother. And she doesn't seem to have the smarts to expose herself to another worldview. She annoyed and infuriated me with her hypocrisy, her crying, her self-righteousness and yes, her bigoted statements. But to be fair - her being thrown to the wolves (and the wolves drooling in anticipation) leaves just as much of a bad taste in my mouth. The girl's clueless and it won't be a fair fight. But then, that's what this season of Big Brother was all about, wasn't it?

Bill Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 09:22 PM EST

I just listened to some of the conversation between Amber and Jameka. It didnt sound like she was deliberately being racist or anti-sematic. It sounds like she was having a casual conversation with another player in a game that happens to be televised. I heard Amber explaining her own personal experience. I hear the writer of this blog attempting to take an innocent conversation from a game show (where the contestants were encouraged to be themselves)and globalize this as if she is the root of all the human injustices. For God sake, go easy on her. Its a game show. Its getting to the point folks cant say much of anything at all without offending someone or something somewhere in the world. It sounds like Amber could stand to be edcucated about how Jewish people are outside the culture where she grew up. She would probably be open to this. To rake her over the coals would add fuel to a fire that doesnt exist. Give her a break.

sam Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

CBS would love for everybody to focus on Amber's ignorance and forget about Dick's intentional abuse of the women and gay man in the house. If they are so concerned about her statements, they should be concerned about his behavior. In fact, they should have removed him as they have others in the past. I am surprised that Julie Chen and her husband want to be associated any further with this mess. I bet they want this season to go away as soon as possible.

ceejay Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:37 PM EST

I guess that Amber's motivational speaker tour will include subjects such as relegious tolerance and how to make it in the modeling world....I seriously doubt she knows that Jesus was a jew, and when she finds out, she is going to collapse! She is a pathetic ignoramus and I am sorry for her child. Who would want to have that for a role model?

RayT Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:18 PM EST

I wasn't surprised at all when words like that came out of Amber's mouth. Racism, anti-Semitism, all those things are products of being extremely, extremely uneducated, sheltered and being completely oblivious to any culture other than your own. I wouldn't be surprised if her prejudices extend to basically all non-Christian people. I can't believe that someone who is a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas isn't a little more cosmopolitan and worldly.

jenny Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

I agree, Tia. If she realizes that what she has said is making people angry, she might throw her vote to Eric to show that she doesn't have a problem with Jews (even though we all know she does). I think it would affect the game and I'm glad they are not letting her be interviewed about it...for now.

tia77 Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:21 PM EST

The only way it would affect the outcome is if Eric makes the final and Amber throws him her vote to "prove" she isn't anti-semitic, which of course it completly wouldn't do. Most likely this is a cop out as it is very unlikely that Eric will make the final two anyway.

Snarf Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:01 PM EST

Oi vey.

Stephen Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 05:20 PM EST

I think CBS' decision came now because when the comments were made, the program seemed to want to disassociate themselves from Amber. So I think they're waiting until the show is over, when Amber is no longer a liabitity, and they'lkl hang her out to dry. It's gonna be freakin' awesome! Mayber her and Mandisa can be on their own show...

Mike Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Thanks, Josh, for making me laugh! (Oh, and you're right on point, too.)

Alex Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

wow, someone's being a baby

Phil Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

I totally agree with Josh's item!! Although I can't say I am too surprised by CBS's decision to no longer allow interviews with evictee's, I just think its very ironic that they decided this when Amber was evicted. Amber, though a crying soggy mess on Big Brother 8, I can't help but HOPE she eventually reads this, and realizes she was not one of the "good people" as she claimed, but a very hypocritical person, much like the rest of the Big brother cast. Though i'm not Jewish, I will definitely be interested in reading many of the interviews with Jewish journalists. But be forewarned, she might not even know what anti-Semitic comments means! I mean, the word IS hyphenated AND almost as long as the word SCRUTINIZED!

Jenn Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

Josh, I guarantee that if you ask her your opening question - "Just warning you, Amber, I may be asking you a lot of things. I'm a Jewish journalist, which means I like to hog all the answers" - that it will go completly over her head. I believe that she is so clueless that this won't be a wake-up call, she'll just say she is misunderstood and everyone is mean and ganging up on her. She just won't get it.

Marc Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

Big Brother is such a terrible show. Anyone who watches it is as sad as Amber.

CJ Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

I think there is more to it than just that; I am not sold on Diary Room "suggesting" to Jameeka and others that voting off Eric the week he was out would be dangerous. They want to cover that up.

Billy Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

wow - that is awesome hahaha she totally deserves - talking about how only "good people" deserve to win - what Crap! Even aside from her offensive comments - She's been lying and backstabbing like everybody else. I am so glad her disgusting crying face is out of that house.

Good bye sea hag!!!

Nancy Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

I think CBS doesn't want anyone to ask Amber about her anti-jewish comments because they want to shock her with it at the finale and make her cry for ratings. It's all about them and their $$. The rest of their execuses are CYA BS.

Elizabeth Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

You go Josh Wolk! I agree with everything you're saying 100%. They couldn't just tell Amber that no one wanted to interview her because then she would know something is up. Maybe they're just trying to protect her because they know that they made a bad decision to put her in the house??
