To Care or Not to Care: Simon Cowell's 'Idol'-inspired movie

Well, it'll be better than From Justin to Kelly, but by how much? Simon Cowell is planning a feature film set — yep — behind the scenes of an American Idol-like TV show. "The story is told through the eyes of those 10 contestants," Cowell told The Hollywood Reporter, which says the movie's tentative title is Star Struck. (Oh, he better change that. Why would you hand critics the pun headline "Dumb 'Struck'"?) He added, "We want it to be the musical version of Rocky — an underdog story, a feel-good film."

Cowell compares the movie to a modern-day Fame (you must watch Irene Cara's glitterriffic rendition of the theme song below), where aspiring performers choose shows like American Idol instead of actual musical education. (I'm paraphrasing.) He also says he wants to cast unknown leads through Idol-style open casting calls early next year. We look forward to the audition TV special, if Cowell's pitch finds a home at a studio. Would you greenlight this puppy?

Irene Cara was my girl back in the day...we need more of Cara - cute, sweet, great loud voice.

Simon admitted in an interview he was bored with judging and would leave it "really soon"...and this is his first step towards something really exciting...because he honestly looked bored last season on Idol...and this movie idea sounds like a straight to vid or straight to TV...why don't they film the S6 idols on tour and make it a TV special - that's what I want to see.

I'm surprised the Idol-heads haven't stepped up and defended this crap. It amazes me how hugely popular this talent show still is. Enjoy people. You're killing good scripted TV.

officially not caring

OH COME ON! SIMON HAS NEVER SEEN THE "GONG SHOW MOVIE"?! THIS MOVIE IS A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN!

Let them go ahead and make it, it'll bomb horribly and hopefully by association take the crappy ass show with it. We can cross our fingers anyways.

american idol has been on tv for a lot longer than it should have been. do we really need to prolong the death of this stupid reality show by giving it movie rights?

Well said, Christina. That's the first thing that came to mind. I already saw American Dreamz (Dreams, with a Z) and I absolutely loved it. I will ONLY see this if they pay Mandy Moore enough to be the host of the TV show and it could be an unrequired sequel.

oh, no thanks. this looks even worse than 'cupid'.

Christina Thu, Aug 2, 2007 at 10:59 AM EST

This is about as good of an idea as "From Justin to Kelly." And plus wasn't "American Dreamz" a comedic take on American Idol and no one went to see that
