On the Scene: The National at South Street Seaport

National_l The music of the National is dark and brooding, the kind of introverted, late-night material best enjoyed after everyone's left the party and you're still nursing an ill-advised last beer. The Brooklyn-based band's Springsteen-meets-The Smiths style has resulted in two of the best rock albums of the last few years, 2005's Alligator and this year's Boxer, a release that has scored them MTV exposure, universal acclaim (it's Metacritic's second-highest rated album of 2007) and, judging by the packed-to-the-gills crowd at Manhattan's South Street Seaport on Friday, a legion of new fans. I've seen the band twice over the last two years, (both times at the Troubadour — my favorite Los Angeles venue, in large part because of its small size). At neither performance did the band engage in rock theatrics or interact much with the crowd; the baritone-voiced Matt Berninger, a gawky rail of a singer, seemed content to sink into his lyrics just as his bandmates immersed themselves in murky guitar work. The songs are great enough to stand on their own, though, and I came away impressed. Or I had been, until Friday.

The group that took the stage as part of River to River Festival's free concert series may still call themselves the National, but it's not the same band. Time under the spotlight has turned them from humble to heavy: They were all confidence and noise as they launched into new songs such as "Apartment Story" and "Brainy," with distortion knobs turned up and Bryan Devendorf turning in lightning-quick, best-drummer-in-indie-rock performances. The Boxer songs have metamorphosed since the album's release in May: "Squalor Victoria," once little more than a stopgap between the album's beginning and middle sections, now concludes with a flurry of feedback and Berninger wailing "Squalor Victoria!" It was, in a word, awesome.

Though Boxer is their fourth full-length effort, the band smartly almost entirely stuck to songs from the last two albums. "Baby, We'll Be Fine" and "Abel" were winners, as was the piano-driven "Fake Empire," on which two horn players took the stage. In between songs, Berninger gabbed with the crowd, even joking about a "secret" beer stand — what happened to the shy frontman I saw last fall? The National have become a band in every sense of the word, and nowhere was this more evident than the set-closing "Mr. November," a raucous fan favorite. "I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders," Berninger sang, but seeing them command a crowd under the New York skyline, it's clear that those days aren't over yet.

I really like The National and would be seeing them in about 3 weeks in Orlando FL, but David, Mr. Greenwald, correct your error: Boxer sits at number 7 on metacritic list of 2007 not number 2. that slot belongs to Battles and their wtf? cd. critics all over the nation are showering it with praise and i just don't get it. it's nothing but basement geek noises (and i do crave that every now and then when done properly)Boxer should be number 2 but sadly it isn't. not that they needed; the cd speaks for itself.

This show was super, they conquered the rain and a mediocre sound system. No small feat in front of that many people. This band should be huge.

Excellent post, I agree that Boxer is going to be near the top of my list for best albums of 2007. I'll be seeing them in Chicago in a few weeks, good to know they'll be different from the band I saw at the tiny 300-capacity Schubas in the past.

I'm glad to see this post! I heard their song "Squalor Victoria" on pandora.com a couple weeks ago. They're awesome & I can't stop listening!

glad to see this band start to get the recognition they deserve. I have been a fan for a couple years now and have grown to like them more and more with each release. I love The Boxer and can't wait to see them live.

Thanks for talking about The National! I love this band, and I, too, have noticed the remarkable change. I saw them shortly after Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers came out, and while the set was good, I found myself trying to make out the character of the band. Things changed dramatically when I saw them shortly after The Boxer came out. I think it has a lot to do with Matt's confidence in himself as the front person of the band. Lush songs, gorgeous vocals. Highly recommended.
