Kathie Lee returns (but only for a day)

Aug 17, 2007, 06:00 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Morning Madness, Who Else Remembers This?

Live_l Kathie Lee Gifford (pictured, right) will help Regis Philbin (left) and Kelly Ripa celebrate Live's 20th anniversary by stopping by the studio on Sept. 14. (The show will be feting itself from Sept. 3 till then, so beware.) We'll be treated to a walk down memory lane, which I bet won't include this awkward Boy George interview. What clips — from the Kathie Lee or Kelly years — should make the montage?

Kathy Lee is just one annoying lady. I used to watch just to listen to Regis. She in a nonstop talker. How does she breathe? I actually love Boy George and Culture clubs music, so I really enjoyed the video. It is too bad he did not stay away from drugs.

Wow, the 80's weren't kind to Regis or Kathy, were they?

Stephen, I have to respectfully disagree with you on the Kelly Ripa/Clay Aiken thing. He was unbelievably rude to her through the whole episode. His covering her mouth was the clincher. If you're gonna call someone a diva between those two. it's really gotta be him.

Stephen Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

I think she has a sense of humor about herself. She parodied her situation w/ the show on Ripa's sitcom. And as for Ripa, I dislike her after the Clay Aiken thing. I think the real reason she said that was b/c she's a diva, and didn't want anyone touching her, gay or not.

I couldn't stand her back in the day either, but after she left the show, she was humbled, and I think, realized she was just really riding Regis's coattails all those years.

She's actually kind of funny now, she did an episode of The Jamie Kennedy Experiement, where she helped play jokes on people, that was really funny.

Cee-jay, well said. I agree. Ed, your idea is a great one (about the staged catfight), but KLG has no sense of humor, so I'm doubtful she'd ever go for it. I stopped watching the show for a long time, too, because of her. Between her mentioning her wonderful, darling kids ad nauseum, and gushing about her fairy tale marriage to Frank Gifford, and the total disconnection between her family values and faith and her ignorance about the sweatshops that made her clothes, I just couldn't take her hypocrisy. Kelly Ripa is a much better host and has a lot better rapport with Regis. The first fifteen minutes of their show are pretty darn funny.

I could never stand K-LG and she is the reason why I stopped watching the show for a long time. Her return, albeit the fact that it's only because of the anniversary, is more than I can take and the less seen of this self-centered bigot, the better.

Any clip without her singing would be fine. And talking about her precious little children. And her annoying laugh.
But seriously...no singing.

Yeaaahhh! Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 11:21 PM EST

why did Kathy Lee even quit the show it's not like she's doing anything else. Oh wait she's on the Insider thats just as bad as not doing anything

Dave Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

Wow, did you really think we DIDN'T know the Kramer interviews weren't real? Please tell me you're kidding. And I don't care if they weren't real, they still should be part of the highlights!

kathylee Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Ok you dumbbutts...the Kramer interview was not REAL! It was an episode of SEINFELD!!!

Maria Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

Her outrage over how her clothes were manufactured NEEDS to be in the highlight reel.

Dave Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

OMG, they totally need to include the clip of Kramer promoting his coffee table book about coffee tables and then spitting his coffee out all over her Kathie Lee casual. That scene was hilarious.

Liza Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

I hope they make a montage of her mentioning her kids name. Maybe then she'll see how annoying she was talking about them all the time

Ed Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 08:45 AM EST

I think it would be great if Kathy Lee and Kelly staged a fake cat fight. It should start out back stage with Kelly hitting on Kathy's husband! Then a cat fight ensues! I think enough time has passed, she should be able to make fun of her husband.

Ceballos Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

How about the clip of their interview with Cosmo Kramer to promote his coffee table book about coffee tables...that guy was BONKERS!!

wintersux Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 08:05 AM EST

I guess my point being that although I'm not a Kathy Lee fan, I don't think it was her fault that the interview was awkward.

wintersux Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

I really don't know enough about "Live" to comment on which clips should be included...but after watching the Boy George interview, I am surprised that he was so indignant when Kathy Lee said to him you are lucky to be here...He claimed to have been clean since the mid 80s but wasn't he just busted last year for drugs and a few times before that?
