Snap Judgment: Britney Spears' 'Gimme More'

Aug 31, 2007, 03:02 PM | by Bethonie Butler

Categories: Britney Spears, Download This, Music

Brit_l Just listened to Britney's single Gimme More, y'all. Yes, that Danjahandz'-produced club track that EW's Simon Vozick-Levinson told you about on Tuesday. My snap judgment:

I don't hate it!

I actually kind of (come closer) like it. The best part of the song isn't Britney "singing." It's her opening line: "It's Britney, bitch!" And this is what you should keep in mind when listening to this song. Britney isn't known for her adventurous vocals (à la Christina Aguilera) or her perfect pitch high notes (à la Mariah Carey). Britney is known for her status as a quintessential child star, her production effects, and as of late — shaving her head, clubbing sans underwear, and driving recklessly with her children as passgengers.

"Gimme More" is being hailed as Britney's comeback — she's reportedly already made the video for the song. Time will tell whether this song helps redeem the pop star's many recent faux pas. But while we're on the subject of more... a word of advice for Britney. Less is more! This is definitely a dance track — one I could admittedly be seen singing at the top of my lungs on the Van Wyck Expressway (yes, New York, that's me). I could do without all the '80s vocal production — most notably the burp-like "more"s. According to my co-worker, Marc Vera, Kermit the Frog makes a cameo around 2:50 ("danger, danger, danger, danger"), and I guess I could do without that as well.

But overall, it's growing on me. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but, what the hell, Britney, gimme more.

The media made her a star in the first place. I don't think she will be back to where she was. If that's what they mean by a comeback it's just wishful thinking. She never had a childhood, she has been performing since she was 4 years old. She is a child in a womens body and now she's a rich spoiled brat.

Love this song.

kathaay Sun, Sep 9, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

Her new album will sell only because she is.. after all, britney spears. this song, sure is a dance song, that much i'll admit. but her older songs are waay better.

who wants their little girl listening to songs like ''gimme more''? not a good role model for our kids out there -__-;

she is capable of much better. she doesn't even sing much! oh well, whatever. Good luck with this whole 'comeback' thing, brit.

christine Fri, Sep 7, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

i love the song britney but i think u can do alil better ....i love it tho good luck.

tony Wed, Sep 5, 2007 at 10:28 AM EST

Britney is a copycat! That is not big news!
We all know that Britney Spears is never original, and now, she's worst than ever. It is one thing to copycat famous artists, but to copycat an unknown artist is really low! Specially if you're a big celebrity like she is. I think she thought that she could get away with it... Well Britney, guess what? YOU DIDN'T!
Just so happens that her new song "Baby Boy" (which has a terrible lyric btw!) is nothing less then a demo recorded by a unknown artist who is a lot (and I say A LOT!!!) more talent than Britney!
The original song is called "Beautiful Lies" and the lyrics are amazing compared to the known celebrity-crazy wack-nut head-irresponsible Britney!
You can check for yourself on the link on the bottom the original and better version of Britney's on the myspace of the unknown-yet to become a star-artist KIM ROSS.

Jayla Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

no, she doesn't have the strongest vocals in the world, but didn't we already know that? she is a performer, and there will always be an audience out there that loves britney. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I liked her new single at first, but now i find myself doing body rolls and other various stripper moves in front of my mirror to this song! too much information? i don't care. it's sheniqua, b*tch!

Reesa Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

I LOVE IT!

Stephanie T. Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

Hey K, do you recall how many times Britts kept on saying "get it get it" or "getta-getta", something like that in "Slave for you"? "Gimme, Gimme"? Not original. BTW: remixing industrial and synth pop is not new. Afrakka Bambatta did this in the early eighties. Though I must say that the mixing has progressed over the years.

joebags Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

Its boring. She says "gimme, gimme, gimme" until you fall asleep, and there is some sort of frog croaking in the background. She couldn't sing live if her life depended on it. I'll pass.

Tygor1 Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 08:23 AM EST

I have to agree that this isn't one of her best performances...but, as human nature will dictate, everyone will want to buy/download the song just because it's her, and because of all the awful things that she has gone through in her life, most people will say "it's good, she'll get back on her feet." I liked earlier Britney, before the whole drama that overshadowed everything she has done. She'll need a REAL comeback song, unfortunately, this just ain't it.

dma69 Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 08:17 AM EST

Mariah and Christina can definitely sing. The problems with them is that 1) they try too hard hitting too many high notes and 2) they need better songs to sing. Christina at least has one memorable song BEAUTIFUL, but Mariah's songs are hardly memorable. Mariah needs to stop writing her own material, not every singer is meant to be a songwriter.

Madonna is passable when she works hard like she did with the Evita songs, but for the most part she tends to sound like Betty Boop.

Jessica, oy, she used to sing well, but a combination of horrible song choices and oversinging to the point where she sounds less like a singer and more like a dying animal has killed her changes of ever being a great or memorable singer.

Britney is just plain awful. Whether it's dance tunes ot ballads, Brit can't sing. And GIMME MORE is just like her others: a bleep here, a bloop there, all breathy vocals, no substance.

K Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 08:01 AM EST

Mehhh. BORING. All she does is breathe the word "Gimme" fifty times. Where's the talent in that? Go away, Britney, for the love of God.

to tumadre Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

ok you're getting really offended over one person's opinion. Unless you can honestly say that every single person on earth can sing well, then I think I'll just walk away. I'll give you what you want. Madonna is a fantastic singer. Honestly, Christina and Mariah should just give up. There you go.

TuMadre Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

maria Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Britney is awesome! I love the song.
The T.I remix is fake though. It's a fan made remix. The raps are from his song "Bring Em Out."

Britney is back b!tches!

Classy Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

Madonna can most definitely sing. She can actually do a lot of amazing things with her voice. You don't have to be a big belter to qualify as vocally talented.

Stephanie T. Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

Actually, Madge CAN carry a tune. However, she had help along the way. There is a huge difference between her first hit "Everybody" and the vocal acrobatics that she pulled off in the late eighties and mid nineties. While she is not the greatest vocalist in the world, during her later works she sang from her diaphram(or at least tried to).

TuMadre Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

to Jason Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST
Damn it! I hate it when that happens.. anyway, let's hear your take on the EVITA songs and have a new song awarded an oscar for best new song from the same movie. So you keep thinking Madonna can't carry a tune, you do that. ;)

to Jason Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

your last name says it all, because you're nuts if you think Madge can carry a tune.

Jason Bonkers Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 11:04 AM EST

Props to Ginger Cat. Britney Spears is an excellent example of a person not needing any real talent in the industry these days. A few hooker outfits and a swirling body-instant fame. She is almost like Madonna, except, Madonna at least can carry a tune.

Bruno Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 05:44 AM EST

It's a cool song. It's a club banger. I dont get the "It's too slow to dance to!" comments. It's a cool song that is non cheesy and has an urban sound. I am waiting for the official remix with a name rapper. Britney is doing good with this song. And again she is no worst than Fergie and Gwen vocally.

David Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 01:58 AM EST

I love it. And I'm glad you like it, too, Bethonie.

But everything you don't like about it is everything I love most. The "danger, danger, danger..." breakdown is SICK. It adds something unexpected and moody to an already cool club track. And the "more's" in "gimme, gimme more" are my favorite parts to imitate.

Classy Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 02:58 PM EST

I think her voice sounds good, actually. Every producer she's worked with has said that she can sing. She's certainly no worse than the Gwen, Fergie and Rihanna's of the world.

Bri Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

I really don't like it. It's too repititious and it doesn't sound like anything new. She would have done better if she would have takent Timberlands and JT's offer to help her get back into the music scene.

To Sally (again) Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

And it just goes to show you how much respect I have for Britney that I completely screwed up the spelling of her name in the last post. Britney, not Brittany.

To Sally Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 01:56 PM EST

Move over Alicia Keys? Seriously? Alicia can actually *sing*, which is a nice attribute to have in a *singer*. Brittany does noting in this song other than chirp/squeak "gimme more," and pant. For those who like it, at least be honest enough to admit you like her producers, and not Brittany per se. I agree with whoever said the "vocals' could have been computer-generated with no differance to the song.

giuly Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

The first time I heard it,I didn't realy like it.But after hearing it a few times,I started to love the song. The bad thing is she does't sing alot in this song.Aniway, goodlook britney!

GingerCat Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

I'm so unbelievably sick of Britney. She has no talent, and her behavior these past few years has been trashy and despicable. Plus, she comes across as flat-out stupid, yet somehow became a role model for thousands of misguided young girls whose parents never taught them any better.
I want her to go away NOW. I don't read tabloids, don't watch E! or entertainment shows, don't even listen to pop radio--but I still feel like Britney is being shoved down my throat every minute. I pray this single and the CD bomb and she finally drops out of sight--like when "Gigli" bombed and the media finally lost interest in Bennifer. Britney is so horrible, she makes our entire culture look bad.
And get a good wig, for god's sake--you're a millionaire, you can afford one.
OK, rant over!

diane Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 07:27 AM EST

Not bad, kind of catchy actually. Good luck with the come back Brit.

You-Know-Who Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 06:58 AM EST

Now that I've listened to the song multiple times I have to admit that it is kinda of addicting and catchy and I think it'll be a hit. But I still think Britney should drop the slut voice and mannerism and move into something more classy.

Sally Sun, Sep 2, 2007 at 01:24 AM EST

You know, I never heard Kylie Minogue....Note to self, go listen to a Kylie song...but Brit's song is definitely a hit....Move over Tattoo and Jordin....move over Alicia Keys....

rentagoodbook Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 08:42 PM EST

Sounds kinda Kylie Minogue-ish to me. I'm just meh. Kylie could do it better.

Stephen to sally Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 05:22 PM EST

She first came out when I was in fifth grade, and her music was different than what I had been hearing. She was cute and refreshing, and I guess me and those like me still follow her because of hopes of getting the old Britney back.

Joe C Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

I have said it before and I will say it again, I like Brit's music. I normally only like great singers, but I prefer Britney to Christina even though she can't really sing. Having said that, I think she's done better than this, but it's as good as anything I've heard off Justin or Beyonce Knowles' last CD. Here's hoping it's a hit.

Sally Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

I like the song, very danceable, but her voice .... I don't know she doesn't do it for me voice wise...sounds like a chipmunk...sounds like the voice is tampered with...

Sally Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Please....help me understand...what is the Britney appeal? Why do producers and writers claw each other to write for her? What is there about her that the public just drools over her records? Please, I'm old school, I don't get Britney. Tell me why you do.

I actually really dislike this song. Gave it some repeated listen hoping it will grow on me, but it got more and more obnoxious. Being a fan of Britney Spears I really wanted to be blown away. I mean c'mon I am sure there are no producers who wouldn't wanna be the one to bring Britney Spears back. I really wish she would go back to the pure pop sound she used to display. Here is hopeing the rest of the album is better.

Nikki Sat, Sep 1, 2007 at 12:08 AM EST

Britney got her groove back! I like it too. I'm not a diehard fan but I do think that she found her sound with her last CD In The Zone. I'm glad she's sticking with that sound. Her voice is playful and it fits with the music. If she could get her head right she could call this a 'comeback'

tina Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 09:47 PM EST

I think it's hot! If this is a prequel to whats to come, she'll be back! Way to go brit!

new yorker Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 09:32 PM EST

I like it too BB, and I even liked more your shout out to the Van Wyck...now if someone would make a great enough album that I could listen to all the way on the LIE.

MC Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

I really like it! It didn't fully grab me on the first listen but I'm hooked after a few listens. I can't wait to see Britney back on top of the charts....and back in control of her personal life.

Stephen Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 08:28 PM EST

At PerezHilton.com there's a T.I. re-mix which is an improvement.

You-Know-Who Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:52 PM EST

The beat and production are alright, but it's no "Sexyback". The vocals are extremely boring and forgettable and un-innovative (not like the overdrive vocals on the aforementioned "sexyback") I really hate the breathy thing britney does with her voice. She should just sing and not rely on painfully obvious pitch-correcting in the studio (which is why her voice sounds like a chipmunk, as someone mentioned).
Bottom line: Beat is alright, vocals bad. Forgettable. This is NOT her comeback single. But it could be a hit, people sometimes eat up crap like this. But since she has a pretty bad reputation she's gonna have to work really hard to change, I doubt this song will get her too far.

jennit Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

I remember when you had to be a good singer to be a popular singer. Okay, there was always Bob Dylan whose voice is a little...unique...but his music meant something and his voice seemed to amazingly go with it. And I never had to see his naked hoo-ha, so I guess I have officially become an old fogey who longs for the good ol' days of talented clothed singers.

perm Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:22 PM EST

I hate this song and I'm especially not of fan of spears.
Here music does not change and neither does her slutish behavior. Someone needs to tell her to stop making music.
I could be a superstar too if I panted and repeated the same lyrics over and over again.

nunya Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

i agree with what chris said below. why did it take 4 people to write this song which basically repeats the phrase "gimme more" halfway through the song, w/ barely any additional lyrics? britney gets credit for a so called "comeback" single when she barely does anything on this track.

Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:55 PM EST

i wish michael slezak reviewed this song, i trust his judgement better and he usually adds more insight.

nunya Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

the song is catchy and has a great beat, but a computer could sing this song, any robotic enhanced or created voice could "sing" this song. i mean she barely does anything in this song and seems essentially devoid of anything substantive. what would she do w/o technology? i say if an artist/ singer cannot get onstage w/ just their voice and an instrument and be commanding, entertaining and seem credibily talented, that artist is essentially disposable.

dma69 Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

Basically it's a typical Britney song. Not terrible but not particularly memorable either. It's just...eh. Breathy girly vocals, beats that sound like they came from a Super Mario Brothers game, male voice at the end that sounds like a Timbalaand-wannabe. Eh.

Chris Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:32 PM EST

I like it. It gets better the more you listen to it, which is a trademark of a Britney song. They never grab me at first, but they get better with repeat listenings. Also, I agree with Adam...when listening to Britney music I always try to determine how well DJs will be able to remix it, and I think this one will have amazing remixes. I'm betting on you Brit Brit, so don't screw it up!!

Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:14 PM EST

This song is fantastic and you are silly for not liking when the guy says "more", because that is, in fact, one of the best parts of the song.

sam Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:06 PM EST

If she wasn't in the news every day for her misbehavior, nobody would even listen to this. I suspect that it will be around for a very short time and then gone--much like her ex-hubby's "rap" CD. There's too much real music out there for her to compete on that level. And she is really old for a "pop princess."

Adam Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 06:03 PM EST

I love it. Britney's not a singy singer. This is a fun dance song and I can't wait until DJs remix it to bits!!

Stephen Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

Dang, I was just starting to let go of the idea of liking her again. The song is nice, and has the dance-friendly beat like Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music." Now, if she put all this effort towards her kids, I'd be in freakin love!!!

ladyli1 Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

why do the "beats" in this song sound like a super mario brothers video game?

ok...
I dont really like the idea, but.... Britney is back!

actingup Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:41 PM EST

I thought the song was awful. It just sounded like someone was having a lot of fun using their computer to make her voice sound better (of course) and then went crazy with sound effects. It gave me a headache.

Q-A Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

I wasn't hoping for anything anymore, but this track is awesome, i already wanna dance!

Phil Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

Matthew, Danjahandz is Timabalnd's current in-demand protege that co-produced much of Justin's "FutureLove/SexSounds", Tim's "Shock Value" disc and as well as Timbo's upcoming work with Madonna and Duran Duran.

Matthew Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

Yeah it's not really terrible, but it isn't anything i'd say is groundbreaking or stretching the limits of what she can do. But it's a good [albeit forgettable] song that i'm sure will make the rounds on z100 and TRL as many times as possible. I'm not worried about her music career. It's that other little side project called motherhood i'm worried about. Her music career never really dropped or bombed. It was her image that did. I think she needs to come out with a more personal-"im sorry" kind of song not just ones you can dance too, as much as she likes making them. I think she should've gone to Timbaland or will.i.am or any other major producer right now. Timbaland would've worked wonders with her.

Jason Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

Wow, I guess our standards have been lowered so much that people actually put themselves through this aural abortion?

Phil Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

I'm glad someone brought up, "ME AGAINST THE MUSIC", because regardless of it being a super-star duet with Madonna, and a #1 hit on TRL, MATM was not really a hit. "Toxic" was the 2nd single, and since MATM was kinda dead in the water by the time "IN THE ZONE" dropped, alot of stations jumped on "Toxic" the week of the cd's release. Though I kinda do think "GIMME MORE" is okay, its not terrible, I ALSO don't think this will still be riding the top of the charts when Brit's new disc drops on Nov. 13th. One of the other tracks that was up on AOL's Popeater blog last week was a ballad & I couldn't even make it through the entire track! Uggh! Yes, Brit CAN'T sing, never could. Its all studio magic, but the ONLY thing this track solidifies is that Nate Danjahandz is definitely creative & perhaps Timbaland owes much to his current chart success to the man. Its okay, but as others have said, a come back single it ain't. IF its at the top of the charts the 2nd week of November? then YES Y'ALL!

Silv Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

Sounds like a Britney song. That being said, I like it too! And it sounds like I'll be belting it out on the Stevenson Expressway in Chicago!

Jill Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

Bethonie,

Your taste in music is questionable. And please don't let EW become an US Weekly. Not who I want to see a picture of on my beloved Popwatch.

Stephanie T. Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

If she wants to shock people with a comeback, Brit should sing accapella and unedited. She can't sing, period. Doesn't anyone remember when she was on Star Search? Seriously.

Scotty Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

I like it. No, it's not the best she's released before, but, the production values are spot on and it fits the limited range of her voice. And don't forget, Me Against the Music was the first single off her last album and was by far not the best track on the album. So, this is just a teaser and hopefully says a lot (hopefully) about what can be expected from her new album.

Lynny Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

I would like it more if the lyrics weren't so predictable and cliche. The music and beat itself isn't bad. If she really wanted to "shock" the world with a comeback, she should have gone acoustic or something. I will admit, I love the opening line. ha ha

Martin Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

My dead cocker spaniel also could have a decent song with the right producers and machinery.

Verdict: Britney, Gimme more! This song is a great comeback track that needs more than 1 listen. At first, you think it's pretty good; then after about 3 listens, you love it. I hope she gets everything back on track in her life, and if the rest of her CD is anything like this, I can't wait for it!

Brandon Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

This song is awesome... she's definitely coming back

Krystle Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:53 PM EST

Okay, I will admit that I still like Britney. She is a very talented young women. I think she has made some poor decisions but didn't Madonna!?! Her 1st mistake was K-Fed!!!!!!! I mean how to you go from Justin Timberlake to Kevin Federline????? She is a human being, we all do things that we are not proud of RIGHT!!! How many women in America have done almost the same things Britney done? They just don't have a million cameras around them all day everyday. I personally think that Brit will come back because of her talent. I loved her new song "Gimme More" I say to Brit gimme a lot more honey alot more!!!!!!!!!!!

Stephanie Travitsky Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

I think that music producers/mixers need to thank 70's music producer/mixer Gregg Diamond who started it all with Andrea True's "More, More More". As we all know, True could not sing a note (especially live) and what was heard was basically tweaked studio editing.

Brit's got the attitude (especially the crazy b-ch attitude...)and the dancing skills but lacks the vocal. This is where the mixer steps in. I am sure that the beat is hot, but I think that if the vocal was eliminated the track would be a better hit.

Chris Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

I find it boring. It is too slow to dance to, and it is just the same old thing and it repeats to much.

When listening, I can't help but think of the all of the hours that OTHER PEOPLE worked to make this song. Her name is on it, but it is other people's talent that put it together. I guess money can buy you everything, huh?

kats Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

It's typical Britney. People who like her style will probably find it at least somewhat enjoyable, people who don't won't find anything new to endear them. I like it alright, just as I like her other big songs. Kinda fun. I don't think I really expected more from her because I don't know that she's capable of it. She doesn't have Christina's voice, she has an okay voice and the ability to find (or have found for her) songs that work to her advantage because they're fun.

Sally Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

I like it, but I have a question - has her voice always been like a chipmunk's voice? That's what it sounds like, a chipmunk on both her new singles. But the productions are really good. It's her voice - it sounds like it's tampered with or something.

BrandonP Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

Actually, Bethonie, I think I'm with you. Though most of her songs just bring back memories from my teen years, "Toxic" was a great pop song and this one is solid.

Angela Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

Meh - she's done horny dance tracks before. Britney, don't give me more!

Christopher Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

This song sounds like everything else that she has sung. Nothing new. Nothing great, just same old same old

jason Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

on it's own, not bad. as a britney comeback single, not so much

mark Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:13 PM EST

Sorry...I spelled "Atari" wrong.

mark Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

Mmmmmm...I'd say gimme less. It is forgettable. And the blurps and throw-back to the Atrai 2600 video game consule sound effects are just that. I was really hoping for something better. But it's just more of the same from ol' Brit.
